The clone saga continues.
Corrections:
Darkstalkers - The Night Warriors
Street Fighter III - 3rd Strike
Burning Force
In canada its equal to 70 dollars this device.
Wait so it can play all psp games like god of war chain of olympus?
The clone wars continue! Lol! Great video!
I mean, china ip “law” being what it is, u expect this to continue forever
can i install custom android os in it?
That’s what I love about these Chinese handhelds, man. I get older, they get cheaper and better.
I keep telling myself "just one more" because each one only gets more nostalgic as I get older, while the games I want to play stay the same and only get more capable.
Alright alright alright
Love it haha
Hahaha true words 👍
How old have you become?😊
Since the late 90’s (In the days of NESticles) I’ve dreamed of a market so saturated with multi console gaming consoles. Honestly I find these cheaper handhelds more interesting than the more expensive ones that you know is going to perform well.
When I was kid always wanted to more realistic games and waited for new consoles only to realise realism doesn't make a more fun and interesting. Same like make movie 3d doesn't make interesting if story is crap.
Luckily these handhelds aren't too expensive so we can have our cake and eat it too 😀😀
compelely agree, i game should be a game and look like a game not like real world graphics, that why i like games with cartoonish graphics like team fortress 2 and overwatch 2@@Psartz
Me too.
Yeah they're fun. I like having my Legion Go for power and versatility especially when using it as my main desktop or tablet, but for older games on a smaller screen this is great. Currently loading this up with all the best retro games and giving this to my niece for Xmas. Wish tech was at this level when I was her age!
Please Lord let my R36S from Aliexpress arrive with everything in the box and also not destroyed by the shipping company
Thanks for the mods tutorials, @TakiUdon. Going the extra mile, for the benefit of all. Much appreciated!
Hey Taki! I appreciate the focus on the buttons and the given solutions to the problem. Thank you for giving ideas to one of the drawbacks of these handhelds!
My pleasure!
@@TakiUdon I have one idea about this device, which I haven't checked yet. That is, take a 1-2mm copper plate and glue it to the back covers and, together with thermal paste, lean it against all the chips. And then overclock the chips a little (by 10-20% percent). What do you think about this, is it possible?
Awesome video and tinkering. Funny to hear about the drama behind this company. You are a true Digitizer❤❤ thanks man!!
These two handhelds just take the cake for me. Love the videos, love your unbiased reviews. Best reviewer out there. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for your vids, mate. Best channel for retro gaming. If i may, i feel like there's a vid you could make that would be helpful to most of yur followers, me included. I had a look through all the recent vids, but I could not find an updated buyers guide. There's so many choices by now, and honestly i want to pick up a new one and I'm quite lost. Just a simple guide that would help each individual easily find the best fit for him or her.
Sorry if this already exists and i overlooked it. Cheers, mate.
I can confirm the dpad mod also works on the R35s. Easy to do. Undo all 6 screws on backing plate. Then adjust the screw near the bottom of the PCB board on the d pad side. only turn about twice. Otherwise you will hit the battery when you cose the unit back up.
Can you do a video on this?
Hell yeah
Thank you very much for adding subtitles. Nice review.
Im loving the budget videos!
...damnn....that screen looks so crisp and perfect!
I really appreciated your dive into how to fix the controls, which I see get dragged a lot on this device. That said I have a Retro Achievements account (I'm one of _those)_ so the lack of wifi is a potential issue, but that's really more of an issue with how Retro Achievements works.
Thanks for the review!! 😃
Thanks. This video helped me update a r35s with ArkOS.
Thank you very much for your Videos, especially this one helped me very much with my decision! 🎉
8:15 Updating ArkOS
9:05 the part where he confusingly highlights the description above the link that you need to click and doesn't show actually clicking anything, thus wasting your time downloading the wrong thing
9:18 the part where he tells you to paste files that you deleted when you formatted the stock SD card which he clearly did in his rufus format window
16:25 suggesting using standalone Rice but that didn't work for me at all, new arkos or not
20:43 showing modifying buttons for better feel
I really appreciate the tips you provided for easy tweaks. I'm gonna pick up a couple of these as holiday gifts 😁
I love that you know the backstory for these weird but interesting devices.
Thanks for the emulation selection for N64 and Dreamcast! It works for my R35S too!
No problem, that's why I included the advice.
I bought my first hand held emulator the Retroid pocket2 from watching your videos. Nice to see you are still doing in depth reviews years later
How are you liking your retroid pocket 2?
@dirty4track I've loved my 2+ and my 35xx I just ordered rg405v it's like a baby of the too
Thanks for the review, I just got this handheld for $25 and free shipping to Mexico, it's good to know it was a good deal
Where you find it for that cheap???
i only saw it for 80-90 dollars on ebay and amazon
Just paid 32,50 USD incl. tax and shipping to Germany.
I cut some foam tape and put little squares on each of the four tac switches on the back buttons and it made the sound a lot less unpleasant. the start/sel/fn are still loud but I'm ok with just kind of muffling it by putting half my thumb tip on and off those buttons when I need them.
The transition from soul calibur to street fighter was smooth af
i bought one after your recommendation and I love it! If you want to Update it you can use an android Phone with USB Thethering aswell.
No one seemed to like the placement of the controls on the R35S so this is a much better design. I just got my Miyoo Mini+ or I would be getting one of these. I wanted an R35S but the price jumped significantly by the time I made a decision. Now I know why. I honestly didn't think that there were IP laws in China or they were so loose they didn’t matter.
I like this layout more. Dpad and buttons are more usable. Also the longer size is a plus for me
You know, testing Cars Mater-National for GBA was smart, that's a game I use for GBA power testing.
I am wondering how you recorded the audio from the games
9:06 you meant also compatible with R36S*. Buying one now! Thank you for your reviews and guides!
Technically, it isn't compatible without deleting and replacing the files that I showed. The R35S just works at that point without needing to manually do anything. Thanks for the feedback and support!
Glad to have a new $50 king with the dpad and buttons on top
Oh heck yeah! I've been looking for a console that finally has chip!!
Amazing review! Just saw this on Aliexpress and wanted to see what it was about and I'm really impressed! This thorough review sold me on it.
Aw man its $80 where Im from... oh wells its nice seeing the different devices that are out there, cheap or not!
I just ordered this from AliExpress for under $30 total! Thanks for the tips to fix the buttons, I will do that when I get it.
Just got one for $30. Thanks for this video.
Where did u order yours from
Just ordered one! Looking forward to getting back into retro handheld gaming. I have emudeck on my steamdeck but you cant beat the form factor of this device.
14:06 The graphics of donkey kong country on the snes was just phenomenal!!!!
and best game ever
Thanks taki, i need this
In the Netherlands I pay about 75 dollars total, so thank you for mentioning the price difference possibility
Heb je hem gekocht?
damn, the regional price difference is crazy. r36s costs just 35 bucks where i live
Thanks for the tip on the controllers. Do you know how to config the SNES and NES box art folder? There are pictures of games in the sub folders, but none is shown in the game selection menu.
@Taki Udon
I bought this, its on its way. Ill hopefully arrive in about a week.
But Im also building an arcade cabinet. When researching about systems, I discovered the Bob Naomi and the Atomiswave. Can you make them work in this device by any chance?
Thanks. Bought one. I noticed that the shop I bought it from has sold something like 60? In one day since this review.
watching your review made me want to play again at this old games :D so i bought one now i am trying to understand how to update the OS and maybe get more emulators maybe the pico8 too?
You answered my one question at the very end. Should I upgrade the 35S I got right after your last video... But something I still wasn't clear on, is the 35S still not officially supported, and not able to be upgraded? And is upgrading (the OS) actually important? Also. Is there a spot on the new 36 that a wifi/BT module could be hacked in (like an empty header or solder pads)? Thanks!
if you have a usb-c to usb-c cable, or 2 regular usb charging cables and a usb-a female to female adapter you can use the tethered internet from your phone to update
Wish i saw yr comment before buying a wifi dongle😭
Thanks, I was just about to buy the wifi adapter, you saved me money👍💯
What if I got usb c to the iphone part that goes in my phone?
Thanks to mention the thing about the VAT tax :)
this is a great gift idea for your little ones
Hate all the hype the miyoo mini was getting, so recently just got the miyoo mini plus, and it's amazing! But just really wish it had analogs, this new device may take its place? 🤔
Hi Taki! I hope you can tell me what kind of rumble motor was on the board or something that will work thanks!
Man that screen is small but it looks FANTASTIC
Aaaah, mine is arriving this week! I got it for $60 Canadian as an early special. I am so glad they made a better R35S because I hate the analog placement of the RGB20S which it originally cloned. I really love playing DreamCast and DS games on my R35S and can't wait for a better experience with the R36S!
Oh, I didn't realize the R36S would be taller. I realize it has a different back for the shoulder buttons, but I didn't realize it was around as tall as the RG353V/RG353VS.
You will be pleased, is way more comfortable than the r35s
any alternative replacement switch/button that you could think of to make the rear triggers less clicky?
Happy Face Portable! That thing is so cute OMG. :D
I'd like to know if Patapon for the PSP plays like with original hardware in this one(honestly the make or break point for me) haha
Just ordered one of these in Purple from AliExpress for £52 shipped 👍🏻
I have a small question
I saw a photo in one of aliexpress listings that stated that otg port can be used as a hdmi out solution, is it true?
Do you see any reason to not go with the 256GB model? I dont know if there would be that many more games to make it worth it. Also, can I add much more games to the stock 64GB? How long did it take to receive from AliExpress?
Please do a setup guide! I just got into retro handhelds due to the great price 9k the r36s and im not sure what setrings to change etc
Hi Taki, lets say one has a 3d printer and the skills in CAD to design up a handheld, could one take the internals from a cheap console and get a bigger DSI screen and connect the ribbon cable to it and have something bigger? i just noticed your teardown and it started to get me thinking if you could just modify one of these or something else to make something cool.
You could modify the shell with a 3D printer, but you wouldn't be able to interface with a different screen without making an adapter that can power another screen that you'd want to use. That would be a big effort.
Looks nice, does the screen not feel too small for PSP games? PSP prices here in Japan are around that of this device.
Im new to these type of devices and I just bought the R35S+ model, it looks similar to this one, I have the older version of the ArkOS, what is the benefit of updating to the newer version.?, the process looks complicated, all I want to know is how to pause a game and how to save my progress if its possible.
All great men are gifted with intuition. They know without reasoning or analysis, what they need to know.
I put a sponge cut out to size to fill in the hollow trigger area and the loudness of the clicky buttons was cut to like 2/3rds.
If i use te wifi usb what i have to do to update the R36s ? And did you install some new rooms or that it is like the original console
is any of those ARKOS supported devices designed to play on the TV with controllers, perhaps via HDMI? handheld wouldn't make much sense to me for the kind of retro titles I'd like to play the most, which are 2-player games mainly
Its insane how far technology has come. Here we have a handheld Multi-console being mass produced by multiple companies. Not too long ago this was impossible.
What would you say is the better product for the price, this or the XU10 you reviewed in the last video?
Hello all and a Happy New Year.
I'm old and not very into those Emulator consoles.
But i have to go to hospital for some weeks and it would be great to play Zelda wich i had on N64 some years ago.
Is the Zelda shown in the video on the card they deliver with the handheld?
TY in advance.
done alot of research and this is the best emu handheld on the market imo, beats miyoo and the xx plus
SCREEN QUALITY ON POINT 🔥🔥🔥🎮
literally juuust got my r35s in, i kinda feel lucky to have it ngl
I wonder if the buttons, d-pad, and the conductive rubber pads from the rg353v are at all similar to the R36s. In Retro Game Corps' most recent video he showed how easy it is to get replacement parts from Anbernic.
Usa las gomas de la X7M sup. Me fueron perfectas y diagonales insuperables ya por fin 🥰😎
@@juanmartin9741 Dónde se pueden adquirir esas gomas?
I just got it for 45 bucks and I'm kinda hype. I love that this emulation handhelds get cheaper and cheaper as years go on.
Where you get it from
hello, hello, thank you so much for the this video.
Are the OS and games already installed on the game console you are introducing?
Can I use the game right away without updating the OS?
have a great day thank you so much
Can you output the video to a TV or monitor? If so, how? I saw some others that can. I'd appreciate it if anyone can let me know!
Cool little bit having your kid play the Cars game :) As a father myself, definitely going to be grabbing one tomorrow for me and my older two to mess around with!
Anybody know if the sticks can be replaced with standard joycon sticks? They appear to be the same screw pattern and ribbon cable location, but I still want to be sure. I've made that assumption before only to find that they were close, but not actually compatable.
I've sworn off buying any devices unless they have repairable joysticks that are both widely available and easily replaceable.
Great video, just received one of these based on your video. Just a quick question on the arkos update. Are you flashing the mini sd card that came with the r36s? Or did you flash a new one? When it comes to deleting and copying files from the stock boot partition, I'm missing the autorun file that you copied over. Any thoughts on that? Thanks!
Hey, so you would flash the one that came with it or you can flash a new micro SD card it's really up to you. I made a backup of the one inside it just copied the files to a folder I made you don't have to worry about the autorun in total I counted 8 files he transferred over in the video I only had 6 and it worked fine. Hope it helps
@@hirambarrera3287 Hey thanks for the tips. That worked great. Only thing I'm running into now is that Rice emulator for N64 that Taki mentions is not working well. The games are off center and it looks like the resolution is too large for the screen. Auto still works for most games. But I can't seem to get fzero X to run well. Not a big deal though.
Awwww. You got yours before me. I ordered the black one to the day it dropped. 47 bucks to my door from aliexpress
If you have the miyoo mini plus is this an upgrade? Also i still see the r35s all over Ali
What did you connect at bottom? Speakers for better sound? Does Donkey Kong sound like on original SNES?
Does this have a battery drain while off issue? I have an rgb20s and I love it, but the battery drains while its off which is really frustrating. I'd replace it with this in a heartbeat if the r36s doesn't have the same issue.
Thank you. Been looking for a way to make the buttons not feel terrible on the 36.
This looks amazing, especially for the price! Can this be connected to a big screen via HDMI or USB? I wouldn't expect that sort of capability at this price but would be cool if there was a way to do this
According to the listings I have seen, yes. You can use a usb to hdmi adapter to output to an external display, as well as use an external controller. It will be interesting to see if it actually can and if so does it impact performance.
I wanna buy this thing so bad because of this review! But how do the mgs games perform on this?
The Pc update seems confusing lol! Can you make a video using the USB Type C Wifi adapter !! Pretty Please!! Or tell me where I can find one bc when I type it in google and Amazon all it gives me is a USB wifi adapter. Could you link me to one?
Later units lack a vibration motor despite what it is still advertised. I would encourage anyone missing it to open a dispute case for a fix or refund. Black Friday buyers still in time!
Thanks for the recommendation and great tutorial on this.
I bought one and paid just over £42 for it.
Where do you find the 6 files you need off the stock SD card.
I've tried finding them and can't find them.
Thanks 🕹️
They are the ones that come in the SD card before you update it, you'd make a backup by copying the files from it to a new folder update the SD card then delete the ones shown in the video and grab the ones from the backup. The video shows 8 files copied over I only had 6 it worked fine
@@hirambarrera3287where did you get it in the UK
just ordered mine through your link. Do you know if the list of pre instaled games the same as the r35s? More specifically are all the pkmn games preinstaled? I am very inexperienced when it comes to software and I'm worried I won't know what to do if the specific games I want are missing 😂
Same, and yes.
Taki the XU10 is at $60 and the R36S at $50, which one would you choose?
Hello Taki, may I know if it is possible to have video output from the OTG type-C port?
My R36S sadly has no Nintendo64 although I have the 64 GB version. A video on how to install new systems and games would be super helpful.
Mine just came today and it's fantastic, I just have to play around with it a little to find out why the leftmost L button is sticking.
Hi @i-alastor,
I saw your comment about your new purchase - glad to hear it's mostly going well! I’m reaching out for a bit of assistance. At the 9:17 mark in the video, there are some files displayed that I desperately need, but I failed to back them up from my device. Would you be willing to share those files with me if you have them? It would mean a lot and be a great help.
Thanks a bunch!
I also managed to update using a usb-A to ethernet from amazon basic + usb c converter
Can't wait for the handhelds that will come out in 2024. The future is quite promising after this one.
Hey Taki. What's the best handheld that is in this form factor in this video that can play PS2/3DS/Game Cube games? I want something that's pocketable but is powerful enough.
The most powerful handheld with this form factor is the RG405V, but it isn't going to be good enough if you have your sights set on a lot of the titles from those three libraries.
Goes to add to my growing budget handheld collection
