  • Davy appears on a UK TV show hosted by Noel Edmonds. He discusses how he avoided being called up for Vietnam then sings A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You in a draft office.
I would guess around '82 or '83 but if anyone can shed anymore light on this, please do.

This was strange... First off David was English so how do you think he'd have been in the United States Army...unless he'd given up his English citizenship.
I'm 5'4" and spent 14 years in the Army and was 110 pounds when I joined. I am proud to have served..... Hon. discharged Vet 😁

Wow!! First time I've seen this one!! That was basicly the reason, but there was a little more to it than that! He also had a doctor administer female hormones, while he was starving himself - to get his weight down! This is in his book, "Daydream Believin' " on page 131!

I had heard that because he was the only son and was the only bread winner for his father that they where wrong for trying to draft him into the USA Army!

IF he still had his ENGLISH Citizenship THEY WOULD NOT HAVE 'DRAFTED' MR. JONES INTO THE UNITED SATAES ARMY... GET REAL !!!

@@ghostcityshelton9378 It didn't matter. Living in the US for a certain amount of time made him eligible. I don't know if that's still the law, but it was then. This was no stunt. He was drafted but failed the physical because he was underweight. I found an article from '67 talking about how/why he was eligible. monkees.coolcherrycream.com/articles/1967/07/teen-life/davy-jones-may-be-drafted

In answer to this ... anyone who came though US immigration and is a man had to sign a form that said should they be in the US for 6 months or more they would be eligible for the draft ... crazy if you think about it ... Davy Jones was always a British Citizen and not American ... imagine if you were drafted to fight against your own country ... ridiculous ... The US has some crazy laws like this ... very arrogant legislation ... I suppose if all else had failed he would have just returned to the UK ... doubt the Americans could have stopped him as he was a British Citizen and that's where his family was.

Not that I wanted Davy to go to Vietnam or any other guys but he was lucky to find a way out. Too bad all those other servicemen weren't able to find some excuse. It was a "war" we couldn't win & my heart aches for all the lives lost & all the lives ruined. I was just a dumb kid at the time but I am ashamed of how the troops returning home were treated. Uncle Sam called & they answered. They should have been honored not treated like dirt.

The military should draft only citizens, & those from other countries who wish to be citizens as way of giving something to the country they wish to inhabit.

I like davy jones, but this was done in poor taste. the uniform takes it over the top, especially for those who lost loved ones over there

Agreed. Wearing the uniform wasn’t a joke! 58,000+ US troops died over there. Dodging is nothing to brag about. My dad didn’t dodge; he went, was inducted, wore that uniform for real and served his time honorably.

Other armies, I don't think, draft foreigners, why would our army draft non citizens?

    • @ghostcityshelton9378
      @ghostcityshelton9378 Před 5 lety +2

The U.S. ARMY wouldn't be drafting non Americans into the Army. I spent 14 years in the US ARMY.
It was probably some kind of publicity stunt.
I know Mr. Jones spent ALOT of years living in the U.S. but I don't know if he ever gave up his English citizenship.

The US has a long history of drafting non-citizens, all the way back to the US Civil War. My Prussian-born non-US citizen great, great, great grandfather volunteered to serve in the Union army but there is a good chance that he would have been drafted since he was a resident of New York City. My Italian-born non-US citizen great grandfather had to register for the draft during WW1. Probably the main reason that he wasn't drafted was that he already had 4 children.

  • @sambradley2975

The United States Army at that time when they still had the draft they would ONLY take US CITIZENS. You are right.
