    I was recently "persuaded" to change my road bike from spd to Look pedals: hate it! But along with the Look pedals & cleats I bought a beautiful pair of much-too-expensive leather Lake carbon soled road shoes (you sound like a man who would understand). Can't justify not using them, at least for a season or two, so thinking of trying these spd adapters. very useful video! thank you for the warnings, although I was expecting something worse, tbh. I recently saw the light with respect to cleat positioning and moved the cleats in all of my shoes (road and mtb/gravel) as far back as I could. One of the road pairs, however, has fixed bolt holes and the difference in cleat position to all my other shoes is very noticeable, to the point where I feel crouched and uncomfortable on the bike compared to the others (ignorance can be bliss, I guess!).
    Ergo (no pun intended), I am thinking about hacking that pair into "gravel" shoes with these adapters. For sure I will not be taking them off-road, but they may work just fine for road rides on my gravel bike, as my road bike has been pretty much confined to the home trainer lately.

    I'm still using my 3-year-old (and ugly) Scott MTB shoes on my road bike with Crankbrothers Candy pedals. I bought a pair of Fizik X1 Infinitos last summer, looking slick, but I still have to adjust the cleats, it's been almost A YEAR now. I failed to exactly replicate the position as I didn't have a turbo back then, so it was extremely time consuming. Then winter (erm, rain?) happened and I returned to using Scotts. I was hoping to achieve that during the lockdown (I'm in the UK) but I still couldn't get around to it...

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  Před 4 lety +1

      Pieter Ullersma that’s true you could, but you need to have the tread on the side to rest agains the pedal on a spd system, so it wouldn’t work very well with just a cleat.

    • @nikveldkamp8630
      @nikveldkamp8630 Před 4 lety +2

      @@ridesofjapan I ride Speedplay SYZR, and what I get from the manufacturer is that due to the different locking mechanism I would not depend on the tread to ride, only to let the cleats live longer when I walk on hard ground. Lots of adjustable float to safe my knee joints.
      I haven't watched Alex Dowsett's video yet, but I assume he was talking about out the 4 bolt pattern for the Speedplay road pedals ( think he mentioned it on gcn). I could imagine that having drilled an SPD slot in afterwards could be quite a tricky thing to do do while trying to keep the contact point structurally stable.

    Just ordered a new pair of cycling shoes from a brand I've never used before (Mavic) and haven't tried them on... Oh boy...
    Wish me luck! :)

      As long as you can return them it seems fine, its expected right now, since you cannot try them out in person . I tried 3 different brands (shimano, northwave, decathlon) with different sizes in fall, and either my toes were slightly touching to front or i was swimming around. Now i ordered mavics and hope for dear lord they fit. My feet are kinda weird in form with a wide big toe but really long middle toes. Either the shoes have been to low in height or to narrow on the outer front.

      Little update: Shoes arrived yesterday. They seemed a bit big at the first look. But compared to my actual Sidi shoes they are just a little bigger. Did a Zwift ride this morning. Felt good on foot after a couple of minutes. I'll keep them :)

    @Rides of Japan Great video, as always!! I've always ask myself, why you never mention the CrankBrothers EggBeaters? They are REALLY light!

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  Před 4 lety

      Really light, but I'm not too sure about durability. Anyway, I'm not buying any more pedals for a while! ;)

    You should try Time Xpresso/X-Pro pedals, they are quite nice and even the cheapest is close to Dura Ace in weight, while the most expensive is lighter. (In system weight too). They also have a low stack height and a different (but in my opinion really nice and knee friendly) float

    Maybe u'll like Shimano PD-ES600, with roadesque look (wide single-sided surface) but using spd cleat.

    You an also try to buy some aftermarket titanium spindles for the dura-ace pedals to make them even lighter:)

    This type of installation does not compromise stiffness when you are pulling your leg during exercise ?

  • @jonathanzappala
    @jonathanzappala Před 4 lety +1

    I quickly rejected the idea when I put the pontoon adaptor and cleat on. Way too much stack height. I just use the road pedals. I have shimano rp3 with a 2 and 3 bolt sockets in the shoe, so the adaptor was different that the one you needed.

    I like the looks of that digital scale. Link? (Also how much does it weigh?)

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  Před 4 lety +2

      Just something cheap of amazon that did .1 of a gram, I just taped a pink piece of paper to the top since it was too reflective (silver).
      Can't seem to find it now though... and I guess I need to get another scale to weigh it 🤪

    I'v actually been quite happy with the adapters. I have them on fizik infinito r1 and mavic wintershoes. The heel rubber is maybe a bit minimal on the pearl izumi's and does not really help for stability.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  Před 4 lety +1

      I think your right about the heal issue.
      No durability issues for you then?

    • @christophbuomberger8375
      @christophbuomberger8375 Před 4 lety +2

      @@ridesofjapan The mounting was a bit weird as I was unable to get them tight enough initially, but using carbon paste between the metal part and your sole helps a lot to get the play out. At least in my case. The rubber thread walks off with time as you can imagine, but they're not too bad.
      Having a lightweight hybrid shoe with SPD mount and very minimal thread + stiff carbon sole yet has to be released though

    Apparently the new Time gravel pedals give you best of both worlds. You can use mtb shoes that have a road feel with a bigger platform and less cleat movement.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  Před 4 lety

      How’s the weight on those?

    • @mramazingtroy
      @mramazingtroy Před 4 lety +1

      If you have to ask then they aren't for you. Seriously, very limit information but seem to use a bastardisation of times old road style cleats. Think Big Migs era. The weight won't be great as time like using brass in the rear of their cleat.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  Před 4 lety

      @@lazyac_ They just feel a bit more planted/stable. Can also have to do with the face that I'm using the blue shimano cleats that are 0 float.
      If you don't have any problem with stability on you current setup, it's definitely not worth it just for riding indoors, in my opinion. For me it was just an unexpected bonus.
