Taking the Shinkansen to Descend (Bonus clip)
While it is rare these days, I do from time to time take the Train out to ride some routes I’ve not done before. This was a memorable one because of this amazing descent.
Also a little bit of a recap and a few tips on how you’d bring a bike on a train, from local trains to the bullet trains, aka Shinkansen

    Hi, one simple thing I missed in the video and spent 2 hours trying to figure out whats wrong. In video it doesnt see very clearly and there was no instruction how to place ratchets. I put them together randomly and placed in. But they must go that both of their teeths are facing, otherwise free hub will rotate both sides... When I put everything together including cassete, i couldnt tighten it, because it was rotating both sides. I reasembled and assembled everything few times figuring whats wrong 😂 and only after few tries i figured out about this ratchets that was placed wrong way. Its very nice and clear video, just please add this small step so other noob like me wont screw up😅 thanks!

    @Rides of Japan I've got a question and read in your profile that you'd like to not get an e-mail but instead a comment under a video... since i don't have instagram... So here is my question since I'm planning my first build and currently gather the parts: At 10:12 you mention that the CK T47i BB doesn't have a long enough sleeve for the greater width BB's of that standard. After looking at their site and finding there's just one BB for the whole range of widths I mailed them if that product got changed/updated since three years ago. Sadly I just got sent the link to the product kind of saying "look... it says from XX mm to XY mm..." and not really answering my question. Do you have any insights? Cause I don't wanna spend the 250€ for the whole BB when I can't use half of the selling points... Thank you very much!

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan Pƙed dnem

      Sorry, I’m not quite sure what the question is? Are you asking me if CK has made a longer sleeve? In that case I have no idea 😅 I will say if I had to do this build again, I’d probably go with a different bb because of the sleeve issue. And with the same THM crank I would get the t47 bottom bracket from THM instead of the CK. (This wasn’t available at the time of this build)

    • @lovemesomedetail
      @lovemesomedetail Pƙed dnem

      @@ridesofjapan wow, great viewer service on your end, thats a fast reply. But yes, that was essentially the question. For me it is all about the sleeve that's included but seems to be just usable on the narrower T47 frames. So I'll probably not spend the money if I can't use that feature. I'm going to run a Rotor 2inpower SL with 30mm alloy axle. I'll see what other options there are in terms of BB manufacturers. Thank you very much! Very helpful!

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan Pƙed dnem

      @@lovemesomedetail unless you have a specific reason not to, pairing the crank with a BB from the same manufacturer is a good way to ensure good compatibility. (That said I’ve not looked into rotors offering myself) Good luck with the build! Cheers!

    Encountered the problem of a really tight / stuck end cap today on my DT 240 mountain bike wheel. The solution was a pair of smooth jaw pliers - Knipex makes a good set - these have no serrations in the jaws of the pliers so they don’t marr the end cap. You just grip it and gently pull straight up and off it comes. No vise, no sprays, no damage, and takes about 15 seconds to remove the cap. Cheers

    Regarding the split ring that provides the interface between the upper bearing and the steerer (5:14): Is it not the case that because of this cut out, there is nothing in the front of the steerer that is supporting the load between the steerer and the inner surface of the upper bearing? More specifically, does this not increase the radial load on the steerer tube at the ends of this c-shaped ring? And is there anything in this system that maintains the orientation of the split ring as you turn the steerer, or does it just move with the cables? TIA.

    Can't believe you'd recommend Light Bicycle - these rims may be light, but they are DANGEROUS. They collapsed on a short hill climb on a bike ridden by a 60kg rider. Moreover further investigation revealed that the material used was not from a reputable CF manufacturer, but from a patent infringement material that also contained nylon and glass fibre. Oh, and if you care, the rider broke his collar bone when the wheel broke. Please stop endorseing this cheap Chinese knockoff crap🙏🙏

    Hey Tobias, you've got too much time and too less children, I guess. 😂 But I have one question: Aren't you concerned about weakening the cross section of your levers while grinding off a lot of material? I mean, even Shimano has reasons for making the "walls" of the parts that thick. What if you have to grab really hard into the brake levers in an emergency case and they fail? Since I weigh 50% more than you, it might not be your problem at all. 😬 But however: Do you take such aspects into account? By the way: I love your videos and I am happy that you speak such a clear and "European" style of English language that even I don't need subtitles in most cases! 🙃

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan Pƙed měsĂcem

      Never even a single grain of concern has entered my mind :) What is removed is basically just the clear coat. With 160g grit sandpaper you barely scratch the surface of the carbon. But even if it did, the lever has so much redundant material you could probably make it half as thick and it still be fine in a crash
 a global brand like Shimano would do that need to cover their asses when it comes to safety (even though they fuck up as well from time to time)
