New Dura Ace disc brakes, will they rub?

  • So Shimano touted the new Dura Ace 9270 disc brakes as a big improvement, with better pad clearance and all that jazz. With properly set up brakes I didn't really experience much problems with the previous model but I though I would at least measure and see if that increase in pad clearance actually exist, and give them some heat downhill to see if I can get them to rub.

Corrections Corner: I said the brake pads was J03A in the video which is incorrect, the pads are the L03A. Same pads as previous gen DA, Ultegra and GRX etc.
Thanks @dxdbstrd for picking that up!

All your info is interesting in a very practical way and disc brake rub was something that concerned me when I decided to put the Ultegra discs on my new titanium road bike. Still maybe too early to tell at 500km in, but so far absolutely no rubbing and very smooth operation. I may have the best combination of a very stiff frame and my lightweight 62kg.

I did get rubbing issues when the rotors heated up when I installed my Dura-Ace 9100 brakes but I kept cleaning the pistons and working some mineral oil around the edges and that finally stopped. For the last few months I have not had any brake rub noise. Adding more clearance to the pads wouldn't make a difference if the pistons are not retracting as they are meant to do. The way you descended that road SAFA Brian would be proud.

Everytime i had disc rub it was with rotors going untrue. Since i moved away from various shimano ones to the hope floating rotors i never had a problem again. those things just work.
i also have a pair of extra thick (2.2mm) ones on my gravel bike from intend b.c. - those pretty much always rub when they get wet because the clearance in the calipers itself is so minimal that any small dust particles hit the calipers. its a bit annoying but i like those discs for added ease of mind when traveling with the bike and wheels off. due to the one piece thickness they are very resistent to bending and also takef all of the heat i could throw into them on a loaded steel gravel/touring bike descent.
btw beautiful descent you have there :)

It really is terrific, those roads are perfect for that, those brakes are good, and so are you (man, I wouldn't want to "take unnecessary risks" as you say either, but on many of those corners I would have no option but to encroach on the other lane, and then some...) 🙏 ROJ

@@ridesofjapan Yes. 90%+ of the road riders on these fancy racing bikes with hydro disc brakes with integrated cables don't ride in the rain with that bike - thus negating the only advantage of disc brakes over rim brakes on road bikes. In the dry, rim brakes stop just as well as disc brakes. So really there is no point in disc brakes on road bikes because there is no advantage for normal "joes" who don't ride in the rain with the obvious disadvantages - heavier, cost more, less aero, maintenance nightmare.

Before 9270 I was exclusively riding GRX for a month or two which also has servo wave tech, they feel very similar to that. But I wouldn’t say it’s a huge difference for the old DA… nothing I need “adjusting” to but the lever is super light until the pads hit the rotor, from there you could argue there is better modulation, but noting that will totally change how you brake or anything.
You can connect the calipers for sure since they use the same hoses, but if they require a lever with servo wave or not for proper operation I can’t say.

right - more questions (I hope you see this one, as i am curious): You have been using the Panaracer Gravelking Slicks afair. What's your verdict in terms of slipping & grip on wet roads? I am concerned of not having enough traction and risking an accident..

First, I’m a fair weather cyclist, and the few times I’ve been out in the wet I always take it very easy and don’t push my equipment anywhere near any their limits.
With that said since I only used GK slicks 32 and larger in the last couple of years and I always run very low pressures and never felt a lack of grip compared to any other tire I’ve used. But again always dial it back when conditions are sketchy, I’m not racing anyone so :)

@@ridesofjapan Lovely - thanks! I try not to ride in the rain either (too much hassle in terms of cleaning) and do not race. I was looking into the 32mm version (not tubeless yet) and will not go for risky stuff anyways. So I will defo try them asap

Hi, I have to change my 105 disc rotors and would like to use the ones you have. What's the exact model? Xtr if I've catched it correctly?

Don’t like how I need to buy a whole new bike just to get disc brakes, my rim brake bike is still going strong! But wouldn’t mind the better stopping power of disc brakes

if I remember correctly you never had a power meter on any of your bikes. you mind sharing the reason/thinking process, perhaps in a coming vid? thx

      @ridesofjapan  Před 2 lety +2

It's pretty simple, I ride outside for fun, not for fitness/training. (Might very well get a power meter in the future though, but it's not topping of my list of priorities)

@@ridesofjapan ha, ok! please teach us how to do that!! The last bike I purchased was based on the BB standard because the power meter I wanted to install came with a 30mm spindle (rotor 2inpower) so the bike had to use a BB386Evo standard. Riding long distances has to be in my endurance zone, no coasting allowed whatsoever. I think I need help :)
