  • Stone crab fishing can be one of the funnest, easiest, and most delicious hobbies you can do in the Florida flats during the winter time.
In this video, you will learn the simple steps of how to catch stone crabs using small and inexpensive crab traps that any individual fisherman or fisher-woman can do.
In particular, we show you how to fish for stone crabs on the grass flats in Florida, in as little as 3-6 feet of water.
To learn more about catching stone crabs, check out our "how to catch stone crabs" Free Report at:

Stone crabbing does have rules and regulations for both recreational crabbing and commercial crabbing, including daily stone crab limits, harvesting of egg-bearing crabs, crab trap specifications, and what the crab trap buoy needs to say.
To find out all of the rules for catching stone crabs, along with our "Stone Crab Checklist" of everything you need to successfully catch and eat stone crabs, check out:

Do you need to have your name on the trap? Do you mark a spot on your GPS when you drop it, or just figure you'll remember? Are the places where you'd find stone crabs different from the places where you'd find blue crabs?

OK, thanks. So, suppose you kept that one stone crab claw.... What would you have done with it? Can you freeze it until you "catch" more? Refrigerate it? Set up a pot and cook it first before freezing or refrigerating it? I pull a trap on a dock and there's only one stone crab in it, I let it sit another day, and still the same lonely crab. So, I let him go not knowing what to do with a single claw waiting for more. Funny thing is, I let him go, then catch another the next day..... it's probably the same one ;-) (I should give him a name)

This guy doesn't know what he is talking about!!!!!!! It is legal in Florida to take both claws. He is using a blue crab trap not a stone crab trap. This trap is not legal for stone crabs. The throat openings are not regulation and I so not see a chew strip. Do not trust this video!!!!!!

You can't remove both claws off a Stone Crab in Florida unless they're 2 & 3/4" long from the first joint to the tips of the claw. If one meets the criteria and the other doesn't you can take the one that does and then release the crab. It all comes down to a conservation effort, not because Stone Crabs are endangered. There's no stated guideline how big the smaller claw has to be, so actually, these guys were doing a very respectful deed.

Wire traps are perfectly legal for stone crab in Florida as long as the throats are 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" or 5" round. The exception is Miami Dade, Monroe, and Collier counties where it is 5 1/2" x 3 1/8", no 5" round holes.
I use mine and just pop the wire off the inside of one throat, and added a degradable 3/4" by 5 1/2" untreated cypress slat to one throat.
This setup is backed up on the FWC web site, and I have double checked with several different FWC officers. The picture on the FWC website is only an example of the plastic trap.
      Straight from FWC:
"Maximum trap size is 24 inches by 24 inches by 24 inches or a volume of 8 cubic feet
Traps can be made from either wood, wire or plastic
The throat or entrance must be 5 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches
NEW: Throat must be 5 1/2 by 3 1/8 inches in Collier, Monroe and Miami-Dade
If the throat or entrance is round, it cannot exceed 5 inches in diameter
NEW: Round throats prohibited in Collier, Monroe and Miami-Dade counties
The trap must have a degradable panel that is 5 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches and is made of cypress or untreated pine slat no thicker than ¾ of an inch"

would these steps be useful if I was trying fish on a Pier let's say in California?? I want to get into crab fishing but I don't know how to. I was thinking just getting a crab cage and rope and putting fish like u did in there. and then useing the rope to lure it down into the water and then tieing it on the pier. you believe this would work? also with the same steps like u did?
