  • In June of 2021, MVP released a brand new mid range disc called the Axiom Hex. This straight-stable disc has a flight rating of 5 | 5 | -1 | 1 and it immediately shot to the top of the sales charts. Some big claims were made - "better than the Buzzz" and "best mid range ever". So how does it fly? I put the Discraft Buzzz and the new Axiom Hex head to head in a shootout to see which is the best mid range available in 2021.

      I hated mids until I picked up an eclipse Hex. Now I can’t get enough of throwing it. I think the flight is amazing and the best part is the depth of their mids. They are thinner than other companies mids which allows me to get a much cleaner release. Great discs.

The long form, flight lines, and especially plastic and weight comparisons give your videos everything I look for when investigating a disc I'd like to purchase. I’ll add to the growing list of people saying the Hex is fantastic! I bought 1 a year ago at 178 grams. Laser straight disc with a ton of glide. As my arm speed and technique has improved and my disc has been beaten in, the disc has become too understable for my liking for flat releases above 70% power. I throw the hex 250-275 feet for reference. It’s now a great hyzer flip disc. I decided to buy a reactor in eclipse 2.0 plastic to fill that void of a mid that I can really throw as hard as I want or throw into wind and not have to worry about it turning and burning. I love both the Hex and the Reactor! :)

  • @mindlander

    I returned a year later. I started a disc golf course in my local town. Now I am wondering what discs to recommend. I think your recommendation for starters to get the Envy, Hex, and the Crave is spot on. My love for the Crave is what got me hooked. I have been loving throwing the envy lately. Maybe the hex is the next disc for me to love. I just find the flight of a beat in Emac truth to be exactly what I am looking for in a straight mid.

  • @electrafone
    @electrafone Před 2 lety +3

    I always said that a nicely beat in Buzzz is like your favorite pair of boots. Reliable and comfortable. That said, I think I'm a lot more accurate with my Hexes on mid range approaches. It just seems easier to get inside circle one range and stay there with a Hex. And I've gotten some really nice forehand flexes with the Hex that I can't seem to get with my Buzzzes. But you do bring up a good point: The Hex has a lot more glide than the Buzzz so you'll need to adjust for that.

    This is my favorite disc. Disclaimer... I'm just returning to the game after having NOT played this century. Back when disc golf was super popular in the 1990's I played about 3-4x per week. Got myself to a decent standard. Now that I'm getting back into disc golf I've been buying and trying a ton of different discs. The Hex is incredibly easy to throw and goes incredibly straight for me most of the time. As I get better I'm able to throw the Hex a bit further than the Mako3 or the Buzzz. Again, I'm just a player that's starting all over and my level of play isn't all that great.

    A few questions -
    Is the Buzzz you used in the video new or beat in? You said it was beat in, but when you threw it the graphic said it was new.
    Do Buzzzes beat in relatively quickly? Like if I do a bunch of 1 disc rounds with it could I get it flying super straight like yours pretty quickly?
    Do you feel like you can trust the Hex when you throw it? I get the feeling looking at it compared to the Buzzz that it’s flippier and less reliable.
    Thanks in advance! Your videos are immensely helpful.

      I wouldn't say the Buzzz I had was fully beat in. I'd say somewhere between 100 and 200 throws with little to no tree hits. My special edition Hex and max weight is very reliable - maybe a touch more stability now that it has beaten in. I find the sub 170 gram Hexes are more flippy and maybe not as reliable. I currently bag the SE.

    I have 2 Buzzz, a Z and a bigZ. My Pteranodon gets more distance, by a notable margin. And while our Z-Buzzz is a -1 1, the BigZ buzzz is a 0 1 very different flight - I'm even making shots with that one for which I used a Shark for before (0 2). Discraft is wildly unreliable with it's numbers (the Luna is so far off it's numbers, they've removed all but the Ti plastic from their website - my BigZ Luna is a -1 1 instead of the published 0 3!).
    While the Buzzz has a nice flight, it's not "unbeatable" in it's category. Once I noticed the Pteranodon was going farther, I regretted having bought a second Buzzz lol - I'm really not sure if I'll be purchasing any more Discraft discs after these experiences - each time I look at Discraft, I have doubts, second thoughts, and end up getting something else. I want to like the brand, but I just can't trust it.

I bought a MVP Starter set a few years ago and have since just about given away all my other discs. Or retired the ones I truly love and will never get rid of. MVP/AXIOM/STREAMLINE are NOW MY GO TO DISCS for basically everything (especially in the wind). My friends can't understand how I can do so well on a windy day. I'm not sure either but my credit goes to MVP/AXIOM/STREAMLINE. They just fly so well (wind day or not). Honestly my distance has improved as well by anywhere from 10' to 70ish',since I've changed disc manufacturers as well. Don't believe me, try them yourselves. Unpopular opinion here, but I never got along with the Buzzz. Tried it in varying plastics and I just never could get it to do what I wanted. The Hex on the other hand I threw and immediately fell in love with it. The glide has allowed me to use it for shots where I used to throw a fairway. I also think it handles forehands better than my Buzzz ever did.

  • @robertericks
    @robertericks Před rokem

    Thanks for the review. I think your conclusion lacks a fair evaluation of the Hex's advantage of being an outstanding forehand flick disc. It's flat profile gives it a nice forehand feel. Since you state that you are not a forehand thrower, it may be difficult for you to make a fair assessment compared to the Buzz's forehand capability. Maybe you could give the Hex an Aussie "go" on forehand shots. You may surprise yourself.

      I may have to revisit this one. Recently added a Lizottl to the bag and I think it's better than the Buzzz. As for forehands, I've been working on it. A long-term shoulder injury keeps popping up and killing things though. Funnily, 5 years ago I was predominantly a forehand player. Now, James Conrad throws more forehands than I do.

    • @DiscGolfDownUnder
      @DiscGolfDownUnder  Před rokem

      I use the PDGA measurements from certification. If you look at the rim, it's sometimes not vertical so that means the rim width can vary depending on where you measure to. I assume the PDGA measure to the same point across all discs so I find them a good reference point.

      @@DiscGolfDownUnder I see. thanks for replying. but it is categorized as a "speed 5", and many sites say 14, so I'm not sure why we're going with 13 here. Could it be that the spec changed a little since it's introduction? Or are they all just measuring it wrong?

    • @meister-t
      @meister-t Před rokem

      @@DiscGolfDownUnder I just looked it up. they call it rim thickness, 14mm. rim depth 13mm. it's really a bad choice of word, on their part, as "thickness" is extremely misleading and just wrong. This number concurs with other discs I've looked up. Look up a Shark, for example (we all know it's 12mm width). Beware, I've spotted a few errors on Innova's own website, and I don't even know if I can trust it anymore - so it can be really tricky looking things up (TL and Shark3 for example). Just to be sure we're looking at the same listing on the pdga website, the URL ending with /hex
      ps: the worst for errors though is Roguediscs website. I'm seeing about 25% errors in their listings for specs or flight numbers, not kidding.

    It is nothing like a Buzzz. It is almost the exact same as a Roc3. A very neutral stability that holds what ever angle you throw it on.

      Maybe for you, but my Buzzz and Hex are very similar. My Champ Roc3 flies nothing like a Buzzz or a Hex. Maybe in DX it does but then it's not a fair comparison with the premium plastic of the Buzzz and Hex.

      Bought a Mako3 recently, but mine is so flippy I can't trust it at all. Its weird cuz the 'internet' tells me the mako3 shouldnt be a very flippy disc, and when I watch the pros throw it, it really doesnt flip up very much for them. I bought it to replace a very beat up L64 Claymore, but it pretty much flies the same as the Claymore did =(

      @@TheDrakmannen you really need ample power for the mako3 to get it on

      @@Mr.SpocksBrain I think mine is just a bad run or smth. My buzzzes and md3s don’t flip nearly as much. My mako feels like a 5,5,-3,0. It’s one of those star kona panis shark stamped ones.

      I have a champion mako 3 and it's way flippier than my Hex or Buzzz, i can throw a Hex like a 300 foot laser beam and it just barely turns left to right before hitting that soft fade, best shot shaping mid on the market by a longshot
