Ketogenic Diet Side Effects: Keto Flu Explained (With Remedies) - Thomas DeLauer…
Becoming Fat Adapted: In the beginning, the body may not be well equipped to convert. We all have fat converting enzymes, but the amount of them drastically increases when first entering keto - the supply of glucose falls before the body has adapted to burning fat for fuel. Hypoglycemia occurs because the body quickly burns through stored sugars and hasn’t yet learned to burn fat, leaving you with an energy deficit* Going from little fat a day to eating all the fat you can consume results in people’s body’s not being able to digest all the fat right away, this leaves a large portion of fat undigested and built up and makes some people understandably nauseated. The liver and gallbladder need time to up-regulate the number of fat-burning enzymes to burn larger amounts of fat efficiently.
Loss of Minerals/Electrolytes: When we restrict carbohydrates, we remove from our diet the one macronutrient that triggers the most insulin release. While insulin is letting the cells know that there is excess energy, it also triggers the kidneys to hold onto sodium and water. Together, glycogen loss and low insulin levels cause enough water and sodium to cause dizziness, nausea, cramping, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues
Increase Salt and Mineral Intake: When you go low carb, your insulin levels will tend to go down, which in turn means you don’t hold on to as much sodium as before. You also get rid of excess water that you’ve been holding on to (no carbs to hold water as well) So, to combat this decrease in sodium, the simple answer is to take in a bit more salt as to retain more water
Bone broth - has electrolytes and helps the gut: Bone broth is easily digested and soothing to the digestive system - it provides essential minerals, including electrolytes, all provided in an easy-to-absorb form. Electrolytes found within bone broth include calcium, magnesium and potassium (not to mention many other minerals, such as phosphorus), which are important for supporting healthy circulation, bone density, nerve signaling functions, heart health and digestive health
Gut Health: Certain bacteria prefer to consume protein, sugars, or carbs, while some prefer fats and fat is most commonly correlated with an increase in the bacteria that produce endotoxins - so on a keto, endotoxins are more likely to thrive. This can result in nausea…
Collagen: The main structural protein found within the human body that helps form connective tissue and “seals” the mucosal lining of the GI tract.
Glutamine: Bone broth also contains glutamine, which has protective effects on intestinal mucosa by decreasing bacteremia and epithelial cell apoptosis, enhancing gut barrier function, and influencing gut immune response - glutamine can fight against bad gut flora by protecting against mucosal breakdown in the gut.
Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can often give you headaches, nausea, and fatigue so make sure you also drink plenty of water during this period is critical.

I'm in my first week of keto, I feel like crap, nauseated and sick, don't feel like eating anything, only the thought of food makes me want to puke, don't feel like doing anything other than laying in bed waiting to die. Whenever I've tried to do Keto I always give up about 3 days into it because I can't handle the flu symptoms. This time I've been on it for about a week and what helped me was gradually decreasing carbs everyday. When I've tried it before I would go from eating mostly carbs, probably hundreds of grams a day to basically nothing and this shocked my body. This time I've been gradually eating less everyday and while the first 2 days were a little rough I feel amazing now. Such clarity of mind, so much less swollen feeling. Much more energy and just the feeling of being "awake". Its incredible how bad carbs make us feel and we aren't even aware of it. I think Keto will become the future once everyone discovers this.

Honestly Thank You for breaking down the stages of this diet for us. Since I came across your channel and listened to a few podcasts that have mentioned this Keto Diet, I have gone through a significant body transformation. 6 months ago I was 235lbs. Now I’m at 163lbs and never felt better. I’ve been admired by those I work with and when asked how I did it, I lose everyone’s attention when I start using big words. I look to your videos to be able to explain things better in conversation and then refer them to your channel as well as social media. I couldn’t have embarked on this journey without the influence of people like you. Thanks again!!

What was your starting weight?! I'm so interested!!! Mine was anywhere between 207 to 212 lbs. I've only been doing this for 4 days and I've been sticking to it pretty damn well, most days I'm only ending up with like 900 - 1300 CALORIES because I've been taking 2 Hour walks at a normal 3.0 MPH pace which is about 500 - 650 Calories Burned or something like that... I can't wait to check the scale in like a week or two from now... oh boy. I couldn't imagine dropping 40 lbs. in 3 months from now! When I weighed around 270 but decided to (sadly) starve myself with crappy food with no nutritional value having less than 800 calories a day, I dropped 30 pounds IN 1 MONTH, that was the most insane thing ever but I was desperate. I was like 14 years old and going so close to 300 POUNDS that's insane.

    • @TheMillionDollarDropout
      @TheMillionDollarDropout Před 5 lety

@Channel Yeah lol I got a new scale, the old one was wrong I'm pretty sure. The old one was making me skinnier smh... My starting weight wasn't actually anywhere below 215. I have a good "hunch" it was around 216 to 218. Currently I'm now weighing in at 211 and it's been just barely over 2 weeks of Keto but I do have a cheat day still on SATURDAYS only where I just eat whatever I desire. Aside from that though I practically have no cravings for sugar or carbs unless I'm making some kind of Chicken Dish, in that case I'll be like "Man, if only I had some rice with this" lmao. I don't feel low in energy or anything, I never got "Keto Flu" I've been tracking all my macros through an app called Carb Manager... Ummm what else, Oh yeah, I'm easily getting my 70% or greater amount of Fats vs Protein and I'm consistently getting 15G or under 15G of Carbs Daily. My Pants feel a LITTLE bit looser but probably won't be "Fall-Off" loose until another 2 - 4 weeks on this where I'll then finally go from wearing a Size 36 to 34

Now that I understand what’s happening to my body, I am definitely going tomorrow. I've been experiencing oxalate dumping and the keto flu for about two weeks. I had a setback when I went to the doctor, and he convinced me to try the standard American diet. I did it for one meal, which prolonged the flu phase. I will be so happy when this is over. My wife and I are on a meal plan and I have been pushing past it faster and we couldn't figure out why. I'm in construction and she works in an office. the days that I started to up my activity, the better I felt and I could not understand why. I have already lost 14 pounds in 12 days ( mostly water weight but I look like i did when I was 24 and i,m 36 now) and I'm starting to feel better then I have ever felt in my life and now I know i'm dialed in and just have to push through the last parts. my wife was going to start eating more fat and now I can show her maybe if she starts running she could feel a lot better. I luv this lifestyle as I was a carb sugar beast. I was literally eating 2-3 chocolate bars a night, ice cream, porridge covered in brown sugar and pop, EVERY DAY FOR THE LAST 16 YEARS!!!! becuase i have a great metabolism i didn't think i needed to worry. my blood pressure was so high i was at risk of a stroke and within 4 days my blood pressure dropped to normal not to mention my bowl movements have been wht i now know to be "normal" (sorry for the TMI but its tru lol) Thank you. you have made a subscriber for life out of me. this is literally the first time I have ever left a real comment on youtube. you are the man. keep it coming!!!!!!

After doing my research, I’ve learned that the mitochondria break down when using carbs as fuel for so long. They no longer are as effective at burning fat. You need to retrain your mitochondria to break down fat efficiently again, and when first swapping over, your body tends to leech your body of salt and other electrolytes and minerals that need to be replaced. I find a combination of intermittent fasting and replacing of electrolytes and minerals seems to help the best. It’s rough going, but it’s worth it. Thomas DeLauer’s description of the two tanks is spot on! So get rid of that spare tank!

      - 3 Reasons Why Bulletproof Coffee is a Bad Idea and the dangers of long term on a ketogenic diet .
Humans did NOT evolve eating (or drinking) such massive amounts of saturated fat.
There are plenty of nutrients that are healthy when consumed in reasonable amounts, but when people start megadosing them it can cause serious problems.
One example is fructose... it's "good" when found in nutritious, fibrous whole fruit, but a disaster when consumed in massive amounts from refined sugars (6, 7).
Another example is linoleic acid (the main Omega-6 fat)... it's healthy when found in whole, nutritious nuts, but a disaster when consumed in massive amounts from veggie oils (8, 9, 10).
It is entirely possible that saturated fat is the same. Healthy in reasonable amounts, but harmful when we start eating massive, unnaturally large doses that are way outside of evolutionary norms. There are plenty of nutrients that are healthy when consumed in reasonable amounts, but when people start "megadosing" them it can cause serious problems.

It is entirely possible that saturated fat is the same. Healthy in reasonable amounts, but harmful when we start eating massive, unnaturally large doses that are way outside of evolutionary norms.
      ------BOTTOM LINE:
There have been numerous reports of people having massive increases in cholesterol levels when drinking bulletproof coffee. This includes advanced risk factors like ApoB and LDL particle number.
I personally think it is best to proceed with caution when adopting a drastic dietary change that has never been tested and is way outside of evolutionary norms. It is better to be safe than sorry.
---Another trend a slow unhealthy liver cannot metabolize and process eating so much fat 7 days a week .
..sooner or later your liver it clogs up .
" ketogenic diet " --In the study, the researchers fed mice a ketogenic diet for several days and expected to find a favorable outcome - perhaps weight loss or another indication of improved health. Instead, they found that the "liver began resisting" insulin" almost immediately and the mice were unable to regulate their blood sugar levels after only "three days" on the diet. (Insulin resistance, meaning that cells in the body don't respond to insulin, is a key characteristic of type 2 diabetes.)😮 Go to this website to read Article on keto diet .
      www.livescience.com/63306-ketogenic-diet-diabetes-risk.html?
---Many people follow ketogenic diets for weight loss and other health benefits. A ketogenic diet can be an effective means to lose weight, reverse type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, and other health conditions.
The problems come, however, when you follow a ketogenic diet for an "extended period" . We already know from the many children who have followed a ketogenic diet to suppress seizures that they are at least 10-fold greater risk for kidney stones, impaired growth, dysbiosis, and metabolic distortions.
If you follow a ketogenic diet, you MUST address bowel flora, especially with prebiotic fibers. And you would be well advised to not remain ketotic for extended periods else you are at substantial risk for dysbiosis, constipation, diverticular disease, and "colorectal cancer" .

Here's my two cents: do intermittent fasting, and at the same time decrease the carbs GRADUALLY, while in creasing the fats. I've found two of the easiest and best sources of fat are a keto tea/coffee ( I just have the tea, as coffee gives me reflux), and avocados.
