The Keto Flu & Remedy

- When you first start a keto diet, your body may go through a brief bout of what’s commonly referred to as the “keto flu.” The symptoms, which can include fatigue, stomach pain and dizziness, have nothing to do with ketosis or ketogenesis. Instead, the “keto flu” is triggered by the body’s response to carbohydrate restriction.
With a deeper understanding of the “why” behind the keto flu, we can gain insight into how to alleviate its negative symptoms.

My keto flue lasted for 3 days
Now iam in 4 week of keto
Great! Can you share how it feels like after 4 weeks of keto? Will you continue doing keto?
Mark Steven kess abook
It has been a year. Have you seen a change in your body?
@@aniyah_150m2 hey i lost around a 30 kg but i stopped KETO because I had a stomach problem
@Boaz Williams Bradley
constipation
when ever i go back to keto again
Okay, this makes sense. I'm three days in and have been feeling awful, while at the same time my digestion is feeling better. (SUPER weird.) Thanks for this. It helps to know it's "normal."
I’ve been restricting my carbohydrate intake as well as my caloric intake at night. I was panicking wondering why I felt so awful, and this video helped me calm down.
Water and electrolytes should definitely help! Hope you feel better soon :)
You don't need to restrict calories if you are following a strict keto diet. Especially in the beginning. It's hard enough to do as it is and worrying about calories just makes it harder.
@@RuledMe I tried 3 times to start keto. On the 2nd day, I had unbearable headaches, the likes of which I have never had in my life. I couldn't stand those pains.Any advice?I would take any medicine for a headache.
@@supermeseriasu Did you watch the video? Electrolytes...
@@RuledMe i drink salt water and electrolits supliments and nothing.
Hey guys, what worked great for me to combat keto flu is drinking lots of fresh ginger in hot water (ginger is so good for nausea) also I drank quite a bit of bone broth. It's high in electrolytes. Loooads of water, and be careful of too much coffee because it dehydrates you. Get enough sleep and take melatonin to avoid insomnia ❤️
Great tips!
Thank you!
Thank you. I was searching for tips for the insomnia part that’s what I fear most.
Thanks for the tip. I have bone broth I'll see if this helps. I feel so weak. I get plenty of salt I have to be careful with that since I bloat up and have edema. This bone broth is low in salt.
Bone broth is awesome! I am taking the melatonin and ginger water tips with me. Thanks!
It's basically a drug withdrawal. The drug is sugar.
Hydration. Salt. Alkalinity. Fatigue. Constipation. Carb withdrawal recovery. At least 6-8 cups of water per day. Make electrolyte with two tbsp vinegar, 20oz water, 1tbsp sea salt, one pinch of baking soda. One of those every day for the first three days starting keto. After that only one every three days. That takes care of hydration, alkalinity and sodium. It helps with constipation, but I find constipation happens most often when people don’t get that fats to protein macros right. Too much protein and not enough healthy fats, will cause constipation. Add coconut oil or MCT oil to your coffee. Add olive oil, salt and vinegar to some raw spinach or some other food. Make sure you get your fats in and that will help that a lot. Magnesium can help and you can get that from almonds. If you do this, recovery takes five days from the start of the diet. Carb withdrawal takes a full seven and you can have cravings once in a while for a long time. I find it really comparative to quitting cigarettes only not as amplified. It’s still hard, but if you get stubborn about it and get through the first week, it gets way easier and the mind fog disappears, which is a nice early benefit. Energy hits about the second week or so. Hang in there!✌🏽
After living on high carb foods like rice, powder milk, noodles and all kinds of grain stuff and then switching to Keto diet, the Keto flu felt like one of the worst migraine episodes in my life. Thankfully someone suggested me to add salt to my water intake to boost my sodium levels, which helped tremendously.
Glad to hear - electrolytes (and water) in general are a huge help on keto since keto is a diuretic.
@@RuledMe absolutely! Great video by the way 😄 I'll share this with my other friends who want to switch to Keto.
I will try this thank u

Day 7 on my Keto. Feeling dizziness and fatigue. I will try those things you mentioned in this video🤞🏻
Hi and good day. Thank you for the video, that was very concise, helpful, and up to the point on what the keto flu is and how to remedy it. Keep up the good work. 🙂
I started my low-carb switch on Saturday. Today (Monday), I've been hit really hard with the Keto flu. I feel dizzy and tired. I barely slept last night. Boy, oh boy. I'm glad I came across this. I will be picking up some Gatorade Zero today and having a nice salad with spinach, avocado and pumpkin seeds with my lunch. Thank you!!
Leave the gatorade and grab the salt!! You feel like that because your electrolytes are low, have more salt (a good quality one) and you'll feel fine. This video is way off the mark, keto flu is caused by a lack of salt in your diet. Doctors who recommend keto have said the same thing, check out Dr Jason Fung, I heard him mention this.
Also drink more water, that could be a contributor. Good luck, I hope you feel better.
The whole ordeal lasted about 4 days and then passed. Now I'm feeling pretty danged great!
J P I eat TONS of salt. Always have. But my keto flu is HORRIBLE. I’ve done keto many times in my life and this is the first time I’ve ever had the keto flu. I’ve had it for two weeks so far.
Water with electrolytes and an asprin helps for the most part.
My symptoms are: occasional nausea, dizziness, brain fog, occasional blurry vision, muscle aches or stiffness, headache, feeling flushed, dry throat, increased saliva, and my nervous system has become more sensitive. I feel pins and needles in my body and burning sensations in my hands and feet. :|
Yes. I feel this way too. But this stared 20 days later of staring Keto. But my husband did not get this symptoms at all.
dude ! ME TOOOO i thought i was losing it
Just found your Chanel and I'm glad i did, just got into cooking will watch alot of your videos, healthiest way to eat is to do it yourself!! Thank you for sharing great content!
Thank you so much for the info. I really enjoy your straightforward explanation of the keto flu and how to avoid, or at least lessen the effects of, it. Of course, your videos and website have been wonderful for your recipes. Thank you again for all you do to help people get healthier.
Thank you so much for the kind words - it really means a lot :)
Day 3 of keto I don’t feel hungry but I just feel kind of weak. I was surprisingly not tired through the day even after an intense workout and had trouble sleeping at night. But definitely the irritability and general sleepiness because of not enough sleep
That all sounds pretty normal. Just make sure you're supplementing electrolytes and sticking with your low net carb limit and you should be good in a day or two :)
I've had it last week but felt so good after! No cravings anymore and alot of energy
That gives me hope!
How long is this keto flu?

How about runny nose as keto flu symptoms? Due to mucoid plagues from previously coated sinusitis and brain cells now melted and drained? 🤔

Day 3 of Keto and currently have a headache and nausea 😫fingers crossed it goes away soon
One of the best videos for keto flu
I am on Keto right now. I got a really bad headache and I realized it was caused by lose of electrolytes and moderate dehydration due to excessive urination. I squeezed a fresh lime in water and drank it. I felt relieved in 20-25mins😌
Glad to hear it!
You only felt relieved for 25 minutes?

I stopped the keto because of the keto flu my first week doing it. I'm going to attempt it again and try these remedies. I lost about 6 lbs. my first two weeks doing it.
BlondiieK how long was your flu?? Geez, I’m only on second day - cold turkey no carbs - & back to being vegan ... my minds been so foggy all day and I couldn’t perform as well when working out- fatigue all day
@@E1234 same. Also vegan, 2nd day trying keto and I just occured to me that I likely am experiencing it. I have a headache and it sucks, and the nausea doesn't help
It takes about 14 days to get into full ketosis and sometimes it takes longer for your body to filly adapt to ketosis. Keto is definitely a long game.
Fast 4-72 hours bang straight into ketosis
Joseph But don’t stop drinking water. Water fasting is absolutely retarded.
My Dad asked me about this & I had no clue what he was talking about. But once a month I do a 36 hour dry fast. I keep some sea salt handy because of the minerals. I'll pass this info along.
I have had it twice in 2 months of keto. The first time it scared me but the second time, since I knew what it was, I had no problem. Was gone the next day. With this video I expect to speed the recovery ( that delicious pasta meal is in my future).
Depression has been on going since starting. Insomnia was really bad at first. And irritability is an issue. Fatigue from sitting to long.
Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and supplementing electrolytes. Depression usually takes several weeks to show symptoms, and keto has been shown to improve depression. It's possible that you have some brain fog and fatigue going on (vs. depression) which are 2 relatively common symptoms of the keto flu. I hope things get better for you as your body adjusts!
Mine just started today. Four to five days after I started
Very good video. Thank you
I cheated on Sunday and now I have the keto flu, blah.
It does pay to be knowledgeable about things, especially things like THIS - keto flu. My body went into ketosis without me knowing it and without me trying to stick to the Keto diet. I never dieted and my BMI is only 19.6, so I have no desire to lose weight. I also had no idea (but now do , lol) what the Keto diet is.
My big problem is that I like to eat plants - berries, vegetables, salads etc. Recently i stopped eating bread, cookies and other carb related food and started eating my favorite pears, peaches, kiwis and heirloom tomatoes. Alld day every day ... and then ... OMG! Several days late something strange started happening. I developed very bad dizziness, some weakness, some muscle cramps, a fever like feeling, and nausea. It made me quit my regular 2 mile walks.
I was so scared, I was JUST about to schedule an appointment with my doc to run a bunch of emergency tests to find out what is going on. It seemed so scary and serious.
At the same time I stared analyzing my days, my diet, my overall routine trying to figure out how it all started what could be the reason.. And then it hit me. I had my carbs restricted so badly that my body went into ketosis! I immediately started eating more of what I used to eat and today is the first day of feeling more like myself. It is not over yet. I still feel it in my system but I am hoping to recover from this hell eventually.
Overall - it is a very scary experience. I would NOT recommend quitting carbs drastically. If you want to lose weight without suffering just do what i do - eat everything you want but in small quantities. If you are too big (lots of lbs) then start training your body gradually by eating smaller and smaller portions.
I am a 5'5" female, 118 lbs weight. I am not on any kind of diet. I eat everything I want, but not too much. that 's my long life secret. Good luck everybody.
As is said in this video, simply drinking electrolytes would have minimized all of those issues. Quitting carbs is totally fine as long as you are prepared.
Didn't know this was a thing. Other than nausea and fatigue, I'm also facing loss of appetite and feel thirsty despite drinking water.
Muscle soreness and cramping made me quit my early attempts on keto. They apeared always on the 3rd day and I couldn't keep with my day. Now I'll give it another try.
Good luck - I hope this helps!
I just caught the straight up flu side. Sniffling and coughs going strong first week 😷
Omg am having a runny nose and am just confused on weather its an actual flu or the keto cuz its getting too much but have no plans to stop
I’m on day 5 and the “keto flu” is definitely hitting me. But I’m determined to lose weight. Getting mct oil today and setting an alarm on my phone to start remembering to take my vitamins and supplements.
It sounds like you'll be ready for it - good luck on your journey! :)
I am day 2 and I feel so sick! I will push through, DON"T GIVE UP!
Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and taking additional electrolytes in - it should improve your symptoms almost immediately. Good luck!

Sure thing - hope it helps. Supplementing electrolytes should help tremendously!
Did it help get rid of the gluten sensitivity, I was told about the keto diet and fasting that it helps repair the gut , so I've just started hoping that ot will get rid of it and it's not for life.
Yep, I'm going through that. I was consuming a lot of carbs.

I've been doing keto for over a month and this feeling came from nowhere. Just a fever like feeling, not the worse but there. I'm able to workout but my body temperature gets higher
Currently on the Keto diet and I am so nauseous it’s actually stopping me from eating. At this point it’s very inconvenient. What do I do :(
Nadia Syed don’t stop just keep doing it
Drink more water
My Keto flu has lasted a few weeks, feeling hella tired and weak
Add salt to your water. You're lacking sodium when you're dong keto which makes you nauseous and fatigue.
@@elijaha138 but salt makes store you more water
Currently I just started the Keto Diet and I feel the wooziness and dizziness but I also got a bit of a headache and I do suffer from migraines, but it seems anytime I attempted a diet I'd get a headache or migraine for sure. I wasn't sure if that's a normal symptom of the Keto flu or not.
I mistakenly put myself in Ketosis. I was on a low sugar and carb diet but this morning I woke up dizzy with a stomach ache and a headache smh
I've had a few Keto flu experiences and I honestly don't know how my hubby could put up with me in those cases - moody, unable to concentrate, fogginess, almost like withdrawal symptoms of a serious addict or something. not a good thing. will just stick to Keto - no more Keto/carb cycling. idk if my system is just super sensitive
This is happen to me on 1am, I ate alot of carbs. I cant sleep, i hade headaches and my body feel so hot but no fever. After headaches remove by my overthecounter med. i sleep and then when i wokeup ketuflu is gone. I feel like energetic today. And im happy because i can see that my body is know adjusting to my diet!!
It sounds like you were going through the keto flu and then knocked yourself out of ketosis by eating all of the carbs. If you plan on going back to keto, it will happen again - make sure that you're taking electrolytes and your symptoms should be very mild or disappear.
I think I did have keto flu
I’m on day 5 of starting keto
I’ve been fine and feel really good
But it has been hard to sleep, only a little bit
First week was terrible. I stuck to it religiously having been a total carb n sugar juncky. I felt so unwell with all of the symptoms. I started taking dioralyte and add more salt.
Did a very strict 10g or less carbs Keto all last year up until the beginning of March when I went to mexico...went from almost 200 to 160. Started the diet yesterday and I'm at work feeling the side cramps and very sleepy/light headed feeling. Probably doesn't help i had 10g or less right away.
Thanks for ur video! The keto flu has got me today 👍
Oh god, feeling so sick and it's only day 1! Extremely tired, feeling like my body hates me, I've been extremely lethargic and been on the toilet all day. 😰
Hope you're feeling better at this point!
Thank you I fell off the wagon so 2 days ago but I'm starting again! Not looking forward to Keto flu 😅 hopefully it won't be as bad this time
yep. thats going to pass tho. I'm on round 2 for Keto and cannot stand the headache it gives me.
Same😥 but luckily it stopped after 2 days but Then it's back
Day 3 of keto, was watching a show when i got up to go make my dinner and felt funny, light headed, mild headache, little bit of muscle cramps. By the time I got done making my chicken thigh and cheese crisps I decided to just throw them in the fridge because I didn't feel hungry lmao.
It sucks, but at least its a good sign that your diet is putting you into ketosis. Just drink lots of water and up your salts.
The muscle cramps and headache are likely from lower potassium and magnesium, too. Make sure you're supplementing for those if you're only upping salt - it should make you feel much better :)
When I did keto before, I got mild headaches but that’s it. Hope it’s the same this time
Make sure you take added electrolytes or eat foods higher in magnesium/potassium (with added salt). Aside from that, make sure you're drinking plenty of water. Even mild headaches indicate either low electrolytes or dehydration. Good luck!
Currently on day 4 and experiencing extreme headaches, fatigue and nausea! Praying it will go away fast!
Make sure to get your electrolytes in. Added salt, spinach, avocado. Sugar-free electrolyte drinks like Powerade Zero, or electrolyte tablets/drink mixes with zero sugar.
@Melissa Adamo how long lasted in your case?
I normally feel like I have the flu. Keto is getting rid of the aches, tiredness and stiffness.
Right, I feel this way anyway 😒 nausea and tired and dizzy.
Could you please do a video on what Lazy Keto is? I was not sure what that is. Thank you.
We probably won't be doing more informational videos for a long time, but we're posting an article about it on our website soon!
Anyone else feel fever-like symptoms? My body got hot and I felt like I was going to puke, lasted for like 15 minutes then it stopped and my body heat went down, I’ve also been feeling light headed after I stand up are these symptoms as well?
I have been on the keto diet for almost 6 months now, I almost quit when I went thru the keto flu, so when hubby decided to get healthier and go keto too, I recommended that he quit sugar a month before starting the keto diet, he never experienced the keto flu at all, wish I had done that. I hope no one gives up on keto, it is worth the few days of feeling icky.
Solid advice - if you take electrolytes it will help tremendously minimize the symptoms of keto flu, too.
You forgot headache. From talking to people headache (even migraines) and irritability are the most common. I definitely get those plus fatigue and hard core brain fog and even depression sometimes.
It's in there, at 03:06 👍
Thanks
I have this right now. Can't wait until next week 😭
I started two days ago, I have all of them including vomiting 🤮
It's my day 3 on keto and I am so dizzy, can barely function :(
Dizziness is a pretty uncommon side effect of the keto flu, but I'd highly recommend getting some electrolytes in your system. That should help.

Ahhh i haven't started yet and this is giving me such high anxiety lol.
So who's gotten thru it?!
Millions of people have - it's really not a big deal. Supplement electrolytes and symptoms will be pretty mild.
Hi, great video and good suggestions. Thanks. I am on Keto diet for 6th week now. Getting fatigue mainly on the legs (thighs) and cramps, which is mostly 80% weakness in thigh muscles and 10-15% cramps considering a whole week time span. This started mainly from week 5. I drink electrolytes and started taking Vitamin supplements (B Complex with D3). Any ideas to get over this. Lost 15 pounds and this is becoming a bummer and not sure if it will go away even if I give up Keto diet now :(. Thanks.
Weakness is usually common but not after the 5-6 week mark. That said, cramping is usually a sign of low electrolytes so I'd revisit your electrolyte intake to make sure that it's on track. You said you drink them but double check that they contain enough for the day.
I accidentally eat a Keto diet just by trial an error of eating healthy & cutting out foods that just don’t agree with my body. This explains why every few months for the past 10 years I feel sick. Not only did I not realize I was doing keto, I was also experiencing keto flu. I all makes sense now.
Is being thirsty constantly a symptom?
I ate an egg, keto waffle, and some cheese yesterday one time at around 6 pm maybe. I've felt so fatigued and nausea today I couldn't eat anything. I only drunk water, slept a lot. I think today is my first keto flu day. I attempted keto twice before and gave up because of keto flu. But I'm gonna fight through and take some of the advice given. It might work, it might not. It's super terrible because my mom wants us to walk three miles to the gym and work out for two hours and walk three miles back starting tomorrow. She's also not a big fan of the idea of a high fat diet and probably won't care or understand this. So, thank you. I'm just watching keto videos. I just want to sleep, but I can't. I want to eat, but I can't. I feel terrible. I hope it doesn't last long but I know it can last from days to weeks. Some people say even months! I hope it's not the case for me
Definitely get some electrolytes. If you can get an electrolyte supplement, or something like powerade zero (or any electrolyte drink with little or no carbs), it can help tremendously. Your new workout regime sounds very intense, even for active people, so make sure you're intaking enough calories to support all the added exercise. If you're relatively new to exercise, I'd definitely recommend taking it easy since 5 hours of walking and 2 hours of more intense exercise could cause physical issues in the long-term if you go too hard.
Nice warm broth really helps.
Can you get these symptoms if you switch back to burning carbs?
Currently 5’11 i was 225 then lost a bit of weight and went down to 187. Still not happy with how i look as i still look fat but just in a “thinner” way. Currently gunna try to intermediate fast, i know this will be hard as i work in the restaurant industry
So I've been doing the keto diet for about 2 weeks now, I've lost about 5 lbs so far and this is the Tuesday of my third week. I feel so low energy, I've been going to restroom all day and I feel really sleepy. I'm not surprised though I basically lived off bread and dough before doing the keto diet. Now I just live off meats, eggs, fish, and veggies.
How are you doing now?
Did it included thirst?
I knew to expect it but not the first day. Especially not the uh the... brain fog!
Okay so last time I stopped after a months because of this... I tried to up sodium but i have no idea by how much, i also added magnesium and pottasium supplements. I drank a shit ton. But... I had terrible heart palpitations, daily and they lasted for hours. I also got too anxious to exercise because of my heart. At some point my feet and hands got icy cold, and I had like... legs falling asleep while walking. This got worse over the month. Can I prevent this? Could it be because I ate too low calorie?
Omg I'm living in that keto flu symptom list right now from the viscous fibromyalgia that is ravaging my body because of sugar. I'll take the temporary flu any day over a lifetime of this torture.
It shouldn't last a lifetime. It only lasts about 14 days.
Cris Bowman that’s longer than i thought but I won’t give up
i am on week 7 of Keto and the flu hit me 2 days ago this shit sucks but imma push thru and continue after this
Now I know the feeling of drug addicts going thru withdrawals 😂😂
For all the sufferers, just get through it.
What's a couple of days of discomfort if it saves your life and makes weight control effortless? 👍
My flu only lasted a day. Was on carbs but decided to try a 2 day water fast.
Lol kicked me into ketosis.
So started increasing my salt intake.
After the flu symptoms passed. Got the diarrhea spell lol that was the worst.
On a side note, want to enter ketosis quick, do the water fast.
Will not yoyo diet again lol.
Worst feeling ever.
Glad to hear it worked for you! Most people don't really like the idea of water fasting, so what they can do is some HIIT exercise on an empty stomach. It will get you in ketosis about as quickly as a straight water fast without having to skip the food.
End of 2 weeks. Increasingly often I feel floating as if intoxicated with alcohol, need to conciously focus, and have low endurance when lifting objects or running. They promised to cure the proverbial brain fog on keto, lol. I could not find a cheap potassium salt in the local grocery store. It seems we are not as afraid of sodium salt.
No wonder I am craving avocado!
Going through such a difficult time.. honestly hate the keto flu so much.
Drink plenty of water and take electrolytes - it should pass within a day or two :)
I just ate celery and peanutbutter feel a bit better and added trace minerals to my water
I’ve been on keto for 2 weeks and only just feeling this now… the cause is unclear since I’m getting these symptoms 2 weeks after starting.
Although I don’t have the evidence to back what I’m saying.
But I feel like keeping your electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium, sodium is very very so important when you’re on your keto journey.
The problem with that is the amount of potassium you won’t find in meat or fats or without consuming carbs and or sugar.
Try and consume more Swiss chard, spincah, avocado etc and I hope you reach your goals 😊
I started my keto journey today but doing a 3 day egg fast first! I completed day 1 of my egg fast today so I was wondering Should I start drinking water with electrolytes now or should I wait until I finish the egg fast? I’m assuming to start drinking water with electrolytes now before starting my keto so I can avoid these symptoms right?
Welcome - I wish you the best of luck on your journey! Yes, I'd recommend starting to drink water with electrolytes now so that you minimize (or avoid) the keto flu symptoms. You can continue to drink water with electrolytes throughout your keto journey too, as additional electrolytes are generally needed on keto :)
I started reducing my carbs gradually over the course of one month starting with sugar. It's now four days that I've been eating 25g of net carbs daily and I have no side effects whatsoever.
I don't think you'll see many side effects since your body has had enough time to produce some the enzymes required to process more fats and protein. Typically when you transition in just a day or 2, there will be some shock to the body (which causes the keto flu). Good luck on your journey!
SMART!!! GRADUALLY GO DOWN JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SUBSTANCE YOUR BODY IS ISED TO AND THE EFFECTS ARE SLIM TO NONE
It’s my 4th day of Keto. I am tired all day long. Don’t want to do anything. I am not sure if it’s Keto flu or coronavirus 🙃🙃

Definitely revise your electrolyte intake. Cramping is a pretty common problem with electrolyte imbalance.

You need to add electrolytes to your water. Consider adding some lite salt, or sea salt to your water. If you can, eat some spinach and avocado for magnesium and potassium (or find a water that has added electrolytes). Powerade Zero can work in a pinch, too.
