  • In this video I show you how I troubleshoot a Honda power window system on an older Civic with an Integrated Control Unit (ICU). There are different technologies used on Hondas but many basic electrical checks carry through to all models. I show some electrical checks, talk about different body control systems used on Hondas, discuss slow windows and I even show the fix for this vehicle which was to replace a window regulator.
    The exact vehicle in this video is a 2000 Honda Civic LX sedan.

  • @Steve.Garrison

    Subscribed. I like how you explain things in your videos. I've got a 2000 civic EX coupe, and the drivers side window won't go up all the way. The regulator motor works fine, but the gear mechanism connecting it to the window has some slop in it and comes out of mesh causing an awful racket when it gets the window about 3 or 4 inches from the top. I have to put my hands against the window from both sides and lift to get it closed all the way and then secure it with a wedge along the bottom of the window inside. Have you seen this problem before?
    I also have a leaking radiator and waiting for a new one to arrive to replace it. While working on it I noticed the cooling fan is not coming on (Automatic with separate AC radiator). Thanks to another one of your videos I figured out it's either the temperature switch or trapped air not allowing the switch to get warm enough to trigger the switch. I bypassed it with a paper clip on the connector contacts as you showed me how to do and the fan turns on - awesome! It feels good to figure these things out.
    She's 23 years old with over a quarter million miles, but I need a few more years out of her. Thanks for the help doing what you do! Steve

    I've got a Honda Fit where one window (passenger side) will go down but not up. The window system reset worked about three times to get the window back up but now that doesn't work at all. I used a test light that I tested on individual switch wires (passenger side) and finally got the test light to go on and off every time I pushed the switch in the up position and then let go, so I know the switch is still opening the circuit. But obviously the window still wouldn't move. Also, I've always used the driver's side switch to open the passenger side and never the passenger side's own switch.

    Your videos are very informative, and really guid people through to solve their issues. Do you have any videos on 2007 accords , with only front driver side window working? The others are inoperative. I've replaced master switch, changed window actuator, test for power. which I can hear power getting to each door.....I just dont know

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  Před 5 lety

      Those are a bit more complex as they are Multiplex controlled with relays, but they all need power/ground at window motor. "Hearing power" is not going to help you troubleshoot, it must be tested. Each switch at each passenger door has relays built inside to control power to window motor, which is probably what you are hearing (just because you can hear the relays clicking inside switch does not mean there is power going to motor). See below for some things I would start with.
      1. If only ONE window is not working, I would take a simple test light and check for power/ground at the wires going to window motor (just like I did in this video with a PowerProbe).
      2. If ALL THREE passenger windows are not working, I would check for power with a test light on fuses 24, 25 and 26 in under DASH fuse box.
      3. If fuses 24, 25 and 26 do NOT have POWER, then I would check the Power Window Relay in socket 22 in the under DASH fuse box. That power window relay powers up all 3 passenger windows when it is energized (through fuses 24, 25 and 26). I believe this relay can be replaced on its own on a 2007 Accord (some need the entire fuse box replaced).

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  Před 7 měsíci

      I don't know for sure what you are trying to describe, but from what I read I would probably be doing some additional checks at the switch that was doing that. That being said, there are plenty of parts and wiring in between that can cause a window to not move in one direction.

      Thank you for the comment! In general, when the power window button on driver side is pressed down there should be power on one of the wires coming coming out of the switch and ground on another wire (and they are going over to passenger window). If I was working on a 1999 Civic I would start by looking for power/grounds on those wires with a test light when pressing the driver's window down. I am pretty sure the two wires I would need to test are BLUE/YEL (+) and BLUE/ORANG (-) but don't quote me. Wiring diagrams are generally needed to fix electrical issues like this. Bad switch or a wiring issue are what I suspect.

    Brother I need your advice and brilliant ideas PLEASE my bro.
    I'm Michael in England by the way brother and own a 2000 Honda Civic EJ9 Hatchback but right hand drive for the Japanese Market.
    So unknowingly I've only gone and ordered a Dorman 741-736 window regulator which is for a USDM Honda Civic's (Passenger side) so have just discovered that the regulators motor electrical plug is a 2 pin whereas on my UKDM Civic (Driver side) it's a 4 pin plug.
    So basically regulator and motor would fit as it's for the right side door, just theres 2 wires and a 2 pin plug instead of 4 wires and a 4 pin plug to connect to my UKDM wiring as my civic is right hand drive and regulators are reversal compared to left hand drives.
    Any ideas to work round this bro? Damn totally my fault I should've known plugs would be different being that RHD - UKDM and LHD- USDM,
    Totally my fault 🤦🏼🤣
    Your advice and ideas would be greatly appreciated please brother,
    Kind regards

Any suggestion would be highly appreciated . Thanks in advance .

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  Před 3 lety +2

      Many times a fuse blowing is caused by a power wire shorted to ground somewhere (the wire rubs through the protective coating and is touching the vehicle body). In this case it could be power running to either the front right window motor or to the master switch in drivers door. A visual inspection of wiring where it goes through door jambs is probably where I would look first. If something was installed or worked on recently and it started happening after that, I would double check that work. Thanks for the comment!

      Too long to answer here, but I plan on doing another Honda window troubleshooting video on a newer system with Multiplex and B-CAN. I will discuss Auto Up/Down too. Wiring diagrams are extremely helpful for diagnosing an electrical problem. You can get free ones at BBB Industries website: bbbind.com

    I tried your fix and I still cant resolve my problem. Here is my situation. I bought my 96 civic and the driver side rear window never worked. A couple years later the passenger rear window stopped working a year after that the passenger front window stopped working. Only the driver side window works. I replaced the drivers window control switch module and it did not help. It seems to be a cascading issue. Any idea? Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for an excellent Video, not sure if you can give me some advice, I have a Honda FRV 2006 model and the three passenger windows are not working, if i check the relay at the under dash fuse box i don't seem to be getting any power when the ignition switch is in position 2. I do however have power on the relay when the ignition switch is off , although it is difficult to hear the relay clicking. Thank you

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  Před 4 lety

      I would find a wiring diagram for that vehicle and see if anything is common to all three windows (like a relay or a fuse). Just remember, relays clicking does not mean they are able to carry current. Test lights are your friend when diagnosing things like this, and I would use one on any relay sockets and at one of the windows to verify power/ground. Unfortunately we do not have those models in the U.S so I am not sure what circuit design they are using for the windows (Honda uses a few types). If you just obtained the vehicle, it is possible all three window regulators/motors are bad (I have seen that). If you have owned it for a while and they all just stopped working at once, then I would look towards an electric problem like a fuse, wiring or relay.

    • @glynaylott244
      @glynaylott244 Před 4 lety

      Hi Big Dog, thank you for the info, I believe that the FRV is also known as an Edix in some parts of the world. I watched you video on the accord (B-Can network) and the setup looks the same. Unfortunately BBB industries site say that they no longer support cct. diagrams to my region. I have manged to do a test by connecting the 12v feed to the relay from an unused relay position on the under dash fuse box. The windows work perfectly, so it must be a wiring issue. I am going to remove the under dash fuse Box to check the connections, but it looks like that could be quite a mission. Thanks again.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  Před 5 lety +2

      I would look at the relay next. Most windows have a relay that controls power (some have only one and some have more than one relay). I would check for power/grounds and control at the relay and make sure the relay works.

    I have a 99 and I'm currently sitting in it at 11:15 at night trying to get it to roll up afraid to leave it down because the forecast calls for rain.. The driver side window starts to roll up and then stops.
    It gives me about a half an inch before it stops.. not even enough to grab and pull up on.. I can hear it when it stops too, it makes a high-pitch whistle/screeching sound, almost as if it's getting jammed on something..the Noise is subtle... have to listen for it to hear it..

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  Před 4 lety +1

      It needs troubleshooting and a simple test light can help find the issue. I would start by unplugging motor and test with a test light, see it if lights up in both directions using both switches. If it does, it is most likely motor. If it does not, it is possibly one of the switches.

    My rear driver side window goes down but won’t go up. I bought a whole new regulator and it goes down but still won’t go up. My master switch does not trigger up or down so I’m guessing it has to do with wiring?

      This vehicle has four separate 20 amp fuses (fuses 7, 8, 10 and 11 under the dash), one for each window - in addition to a power window relay under the dash and a 40 amp fuse (#46) under the hood.

      I don't know what kind of testing you have done but I would start by verifying power/ground with a test light. If the test light will not light then I would work my way back to the power/ground source until I find the issue. I show exactly what I would do in this newer video (I go over a wiring diagram too): czcams.com/video/6RTKsTAU4bs/video.html
