MUST KNOW - Melodic Guitar Soloing With Chord Tones

  • ► Grab lesson files: goo.gl/mfT1h1 - So, did this sound like I was playing the C major scale the whole time?
Well I was, but, inspired by David Gilmour and many others, I highlighted the CHORD TONES.
What's this all about then? Chord tones? Yeah baby, and it's the SECRET everyone probably knows! haha!
Emphasizing chord tones is a simple and powerful approach to playing MELODICALLY. You can't fail with chord tones. Arpeggios and triads are the chord tones in this way: if you are playing over a C major 7 chord, you are playing chord tones if you play any of the notes from the triad: CEG. The same is true if you play the note B, which appears in the C major 7 chord.... and so on - clear as mud? Triad: 3 notes, but for example, a C Maj9 arpeggio would have 1-3-5-7-9, so 5 notes. Obviously, you don't have to play every single note of the chord - you can just play 1 or 2 notes from the chord - you're still playing the chord notes.
From this lesson, I hope you can see that practicing the major scale, TOGETHER with triads and arpeggio exercises is something you want to master.

Thanks mister Robert let me tel you for the first time even if it's been 6 years or more i'm following your lessons..you're the best teacher anybody could have.. By the way.. The last part from Am to F is a Gilmourish mellow kinda phrases... Sounding by the way very intense to my ears..love it specially..i've been looking to anyone who could sounding so close and you did it thumbs up...never heard it from anyone else... Wish Mister Renman you do a lesson entirely dedicated to David Gilmour style, who by the way use that kind of aproach to soloing over his music.

Great lesson. With these types of lesson, the teacher quite often talks about the Caged system, where to find the target notes up and down the guitar, but doesn't actually explain about the passing tones, how to use them, when to use them, and different ways to start or end on a chord tone. You actually touched on some of this stuff. Cheers.

I see the chord tones as the "boss notes" , the notes to launch from and to return to, during the chord of the moment. I'm very visual so what makes it easier for me is to find all of the D, A and E shapes on the fretboard for any given chord. Of course that would be in the order of 5-1-3 for all of these shapes, and we are all familiar with them because that's what we learned on day 1. There are times when I might use a scale, but obviously the chord tones are much more mycotic and they really aren't the most important notes during the chord of the moment.

Robert,... could you do a couple of lessons on "Thumb placement",... during your initial playthru on this video your thumb is always over the top,... but when you go back to breaking down phrases your thumb is much more on the back top side of the neck..... so what I'm looking for is:
1). Why you've developed a style where your thumb is many times over the top, and how to overcome crowding your other fingers to accidently mute notes.
    2) when to use the thumb for strength on bends
    3) How to use that strength to get vibrato in a bend & how to practice that.
    4) How & why to use the thumb to fret a note while playing a chord instead of barring.
