Soloing over chord changes can seem a daunting task, especially if the changes are frequent and unconventional.
But we have to start somewhere. The key thing is to break it all down into the smallest practical steps possible. That's what I aim to help you do throughout this series of lessons. By the end of the series you should have a clear process in your mind for soloing over any sequence of chords that may be thrown at you.
In this lesson we learn about the two main types of chord change you're likely to solo over and the concept of note selection within a scale. We then move on to building simple phrases over 2 chords - C major and F major (the 1 and 4 chords of C major).

this guy makes better lessons than anything i've ever watched or read in a book!
+Malcolm Ng Too kind! Thanks mate.
absolutely agree
this is God
HI, where is backingtrack link? thx;)
I think the same. It is my favourite chanel on YT :D
That's a very nice gesture, thank you. Comments like that mean more to me than any monetary donation, as cheesy as that sounds.
You’re the best man. It feels like you taught me everything I know
'Wandering aimlessly up and down the scale' describes my playing perfectly even after 15 years!! 😁
15 months is still okay but 15 YEARS???
I'm like a squirrel lookin' for a nut!
What took you so long?
Lazy describes me to a tee
Same here
Well, I've learnt more and better from your videos within 4 days than what I've learnt over these 5 years.
Good
Only if these videos got recommended. I found these videos on an extensive search for the best music theory lessons on CZcams, I had to search extensively or all I got was Marty Schwartz and every other schmuck on CZcams. Not dissing them.
Finally. Someone who breaks down theory instead of just showing us thirds, sevenths and arpeggios.
As a beginner to guitar soloing, I have watched tons and tons of videos, including those from world renowned players. This is the only ones that really help me to see how to start playing some music. Tons of good players there, but so few can teach. This is the kind of video the student needs. Thank you so much!
I am a self taught guitarist and learning from internet is so hard and the progress is so slow.
But damn, youtube algorithm blessed me with a very good Teacher, now I can feel that I can improve faster
Great video. You really break the main idea down to an easy to follow lesson. I've watched countless triad and playing over chord videos but this was especially helpful. No other tutorial explained the idea of passing tones between starting and landing notes this well.
Oh my god!!! I was looking so hard and so long for such an explanation! All the other stuff just overwhelms you with unnecessary info but wit this I can finally start learning something. Thank you very much sir!
So hard and long you forgot to say no homo
I love fret jam so much! I always come back to these lessons. The website alone is responsible for teaching, and expanding my knowledge beyond belief!
This!!! This right here is my guitar university! When I first started I felt it was too detailed for my 'easily distracted, social media brain'. But once I started paying attention, it's so much valuable insight. I am really glad I found this channel! Subscribed
I spent so long looking for a video that explained this! This is great! Thank you so much
the way all these fretjam vids are organized, dictated, presented, edited... literally everything about this library of knowledge is top notch. cheers, and kudos to you guys. seriously tackling an entire system of artistic communication in the clearest and most effective way. marvelous
The CZcams algorithm added your videos to my playlist and... Wow! I never thought I would understand the application of scales to learn to play lead. This video is a blueprint to learning the application. I learned more in this 12 minute video about playing lead than I have in the last 2 years. Thank you!!! ... Subscribed
Your lessons are incredibly useful, clear, and well-explained. All of the information and examples are so relevant and rich that it is going to take me a long time to assimilate so that this comes out in my playing, but the 'journey' will be a fun and rewarding one. I have been looking for this kind of information for a while, and am so glad that you are out there. Many thanks.
best guitar lessons I've found so far. Better than person sitting down talking without any pictures related to context. Thank you
This is seriously one of the best guitar lessons I've found. God bless you man.
Probably one of the most informative and well articulated guitar lessons I've seen on the internet.. No doubt about it..
Honestly Mate. I go to Music Uni in Manchester and I’ve learnt more through using your website and videos than I have at Uni. Not to say I haven’t learnt a lot there but these are just so informative. Thanks for everything.
The only lesson (including your part 2) that I have found on CZcams that explains soloing over chord progressions effectively, in an easy to digest manner. Great work mate!
That was what I was looking for so long. Simple concept that gives you starting point for building up. In most of the lessons out there, people are like: 'We start here... then... You hear that change?... Let's try something else... Experiment... Do this...' How a beginner is supposed to understand such 'explanation'?! Cheers for that lesson!
this is THE best guitar lesson I've seen in months, just what I've been searching for.
Thank you. Nothing like great teaching. A rare thing indeed.
OMG, a great lesson. A very consistent and helpful approach "start with two chord notes, than add one note between them, than add scale phrase between them".
Many thanks and really appreciate your work on these lessons!
one of the best lessons that i've found in my life. Congrats bro
This is the greatest lesson i've ever watch.
I would've liked to see this lesson before 2018..
Keep on rockin man!!
Wow. I’ve searched everywhere for this simple explanation. As usual always a great visualization of how you should play versus how you shouldn’t. One of my favorite videos from fret jams.
Good. To the point with no annoying intro or tedious guitar sounds. I like how you focus on note-numbers (from the scale) but also mention the chord-tone numbers. Exactly how I teach. I'll check out your other stuff.
Your lessons are beautifully done! Excellent combination of visualization and audio articulation.
You're the best teacher out there. I really learn from you. Thanks!
Oldie but goldie. Fantastic explanation and crucial for anyone who needs guidance for more sophisticated lead guitar writing, instead of just aimlessly wandering and seeing what sticks.
Fantastically good lessons . Thank you fretjam
This is the first time I see soloing (on guitar or any other instrument) so beautifully explained. It certainly adds a foundation that could, perhaps, be lacking if you started playing 'by ear'. Thanks heaps for the lesson.
You have a very nice way of teaching this. I never understood music theory better then this. I found these video's at just the right time in my guitar progress to spice up my playing. Thank you very much. The series is awesome!!
outstanding explanations! Very well done sir!!

Great, great info. If only the internet were available when I first started learning how to play. This breaks it down better than any lesson I've ever taken. Subscribed!
Best lesson on CZcams
Man. This was right on time. “Starting” and “landing” notes, with “passing” notes in between. I think I finally get how to make a phrase. I wonder if he’d do one for jazz bebop soloing?
killer lesson on soloing, huge thanks!
absolutely the most changing eleven minutes of my life 😂 thank you so much
Year 2022 and there are still no such clear, useful and motivating lessons. I advise going back to school and taking note in a notebook of all the lessons regarding harmony and chord progression. Now it's my personal bible.
Great visual lesson
Thanx for all your videos, very good job !!
