Last summer I sat down and visited with a “contract parts manufacturer” for Boeing. He said they sold out to a company in India 3 years ago and nobody is checking the quality. My issue is it’s not just Boeing. It is several of our great American companies. Foreign interests have infiltrated our country and pilfered the American economy. This global thing they have been pushing the last 40 years is starting to show its ugly head. I think we are screwed you just don’t know it yet.

I'm a former aircraft mechanic for United Airlines and at Boeing (1.5yrs) doing remanufacturing as opposed to manufacturing.
A quality manager is part of the department that is in charge of ALL of the quality of manufacturing of parts and the aircraft itself. His department runs inspections through inspectors after assembly tasks are complete. The inspector, or QC, as Boeing calls them inspects the work to make sure it was done according to engineering standards directed by drawings, aka prints or "blueprints," and the Boeing Standard Practices manual which are the engineering standards that are followed when specific directions are not given in the drawings. They are always followed even in the drawings, but when not called out in the drawing then the mechanic references the Standards manual for what approach and use of parts and fasteners should be followed. Another manual used is the Boeing Material Specifications Manual and is used in the same fashion as the Standards Manual for what expendable (never reused) materials like glues, sealants, primers, paint and tape just to name a few are used. It does take a long time to manufacturer this way and no work is supposed to be performed without documentation. The failures I hear happening tell me that there's a failure in the whole approach that I just laid out. Furthermore, Boeing trains all of their mechanics for the first two months of employment teaching them to manufacturer by the Boeing Process. There may also be a breakdown at that level where mechanics are doing a poor job, inspectors are signing off on poor work giving the ok and there's little to no accountability at all levels.
When I hear about "missing bolts" in something as major as a door plug which is essentially the same as an entry door safety wise (flight safety related), that is maintaining cabin pressure, what I'm hearing is there either was no 1) clearance to install and 2) no "buy back" by inspection after installation to ensure proper installation and that nothing as in parts or hardware was missing or later the plug door was removed and reinstalled without paperwork or QC. where when in a rush things can be missed. That's called undocumented maintenance. The main insurance that the job is done correctly is the mechanic. The secondary to make sure the mechanic didn't misstep is the inspector. The last inspection on the door plug would be close up or installation of the insulation and sidewall panels. This should also have a clearance to proceed before by inspection.
It sounds like Boeing has been making unprincipled decisions based upon business concerns.
I think what is going to happen is the Dept. of Transportation, the FAA and the NTSB are going to set up an independent inspection department and Boeing will no longer be allowed to do their own Quality Control.

Excellent overview thanks for sharing. I worked as an A&P for many years. I just have to say I have done some QC work and don't understand how any of them or the mechanics would gloss over something they can see is sketchy. They are supposed to be the final QC check and they even have systems to report defects, malfunctions, violations to the FAA. It just makes no sense that an experienced company like Boeing would compromise the quality of their aircraft when they know this is more likely to damage them in the end.

Thank you for your compliment! Yes I agree with you! I've been scratching my head on this one because Boeing has been a stellar aircraft company for 100 years! This has to be a generational shift where an entire workforce say under the age of 40 or 45 has a completely different way of thinking and believing which is a subset of a very different value system. This isn't just a failure at one level, say the mechanic because as you are aware, if it were just at one level the other levels, QC, management, fellow mechanics, even the cleaners would catch these failures, but when it's a failure at all levels much more will slip through the cracks and go unnoticed. It's a culture and this will take a cultural shift not just at Boeing but also in our society.

I do not believe all the FAA A&P technicians and Quality control people would sign off on something they know is faulty or incorrect. Why would engineers diverge from very strict certification standards that are regulated by the FAA, knowing it will likely fail because the engineering math is faulty? Makes no sense. Boeing is not a company making toy airplanes, they are not stupid enough to believe they can use faulty math (engineering) and think this would serve their bottom line. Nope. Something stinks here. Maybe this is just part of the ongoing teardown of the USA. Boeing is a long time American proud favorite, but they decided to do something as stupid as this. I doubt it myself. Uncle scrooge mcducks run the world. They pinch every penny. Human lives are a game for them. Its not the money they care about. Its doing bad things knowing they can and will always get away with it. It's ego buddy not money

Okay, so I can answer this as I work in the aviation industry and I also work hand in hand with quality managers. Quality managers are the ones who look through all the different types of documentation that is done for quality inspections, so once a technician is finished installing a part, the quality assurance inspector will then inspect to make sure that the part was installed correctly. Quality managers are the ones who make sure that all the quality inspections are documented properly, so he was actually looking at the results of all of the quality inspections that were not being done correctly.

Can't trust that the job was done properly if the inspectors don't even know the jobs themselves lmao.

It's being reported on Breaking Point that he was driving home to Louisiana on Friday, then Boeing lawyers asked him to stay one more day. He says ok. Then Saturday morning he's found dead in his truck of suicide. Where is the hotel camera footage? Taking bets they weren't working that day.
