  • Rabbi Shais Taub presents life lessons he learned while winning the trust of a couple of frightened stray cats. He draws parallels between putting these cats at ease and similar behaviors in interpersonal relationships that convey safety and security especially to those experiencing emotional dysregulation due to trauma.
Presented at a meeting at Avi Fishoff's center for parents of children in crisis.
What would Jackson Galaxy ‪@JacksonGalaxy‬ have to say about this?

I never was able to physically have children.
But I have helped stray cat colonies, worked with cats at shelters and one rescue with strays.

I really enjoy your content. I'm not a parent, I'm an adult that has experienced extreme anxiety and depression since childhood. I've been slowly learning to self regulate without repressing. The biggest block to recovery has been denial of my emotional states. Two cats came into my life to help me become self-aware. They are brother and sister and their mother was wild. They have much more sensitive nervous systems than other donesticated cats, and when I am stressed or anxious, they run away. It took a while for me to understand why, because anxiety was my normal. They've taught me to identify when I'm anxious so that I can break that pattern.

That’s really profound. I’m so happy to hear that these little creatures came into your life and helped you to discover more about yourself in this way.

I wish I had seen this video or had this information 40 years ago when my oldest son was growing up. We actually had a therapist tell us to lock him in the bathroom (which we refused to do). He grew up pretty well and works as a computer systems analyst, in which job he thrives because he is self paced and not paired with anyone. He still has some religious issues (no longer keeps kosher or Shabbos), but I don't argue with him, which would just lead to problems. Yet he does all the other holidays and fasts. Anyway, I wanted to let you know how your classes affect me and how appreciative I am.

Wow this is speaking to me. Answers some of the questions I had after a negative visit with my grandchildren that has caused s major break in my family. ( months later it is my 77th birthday today. Not too late to realize how important to give space. Backing off of giving becomes taking. The one time we had a good time was mother SHabbos when we took them for Pizza. I hope we have another chance.

I was skeptical, but this was enlightening. Not only do I need to treat others like those cats, but myself, too. Courage to Change, May 30: "I quickly put myself in the kitten's place..." Great Al Anon reading today about being gentle with oneself in face of perfectionism. Congrats on the project by Ohel. Gut Shabbos, from Athens, Greece.

    Such a fascinating conversation.
Thank you so much for sharing!
This reminds me of the Hayom Yom where the rebbe teaches what we can learn from a thief.
It amazing how you took this to the next level.
It got me thinking how these ten ideas can be applied to anyone, specifically children, when they have been activated or triggered and are in their FFFF (fight flight freeze fawn) brain state.

Please see that heart shape on the side of that beautiful "security cat" ( black and white). They also mirror your energy...they are very sensitive to over stimulation. Please share your findings with Jackson Galaxy!!! aka: The Cat Daddy!❤❤

Thank you rabbi Taub for this profound video.
there's something so powerful in this presentation that I'll write it in words here for those that can relate.
And that is that....The "intention" behind Rabbi Taub forming the connection with those strays is the reason why those cats trusted him.
1.Rabbi Taub wanted to be kind to these animals simply cuz they're gods creatures.
    2. Rabbi Taub didn't need anything from those cats. No emotional connection, no services it was simply a chesed shel emes.
3.rabbi Taub would've been ok if the experiment didn't work out in the end since he tried for a higher purpose and not for his own benefit.

‎חתול was one of the words I learned first in Hebrew. Cats are an obvious manifestation of one of G_d’s special gifts to His humans. They serve as an accurate barometer of our level of decency and chesed.

It’s amazing how cats know who is a safe person right away. I don’t say this on the video but I’ll tell you. Anytime there was another person with me, the cats would stay far away even when I put out food. When I brought my son-in-law they came inside and were walking around very comfortably.

The rule to always leave an escape reminds me of the halacha which I think exists that when Am Yisroel attacks, it has to leave the enemy an escape route.

Showing your back can also be a display of trust, similar to a slow blink or eye closed with cats. It can communicate more than that too, just sharing. Also, 12+

Thank you, Rabbi! I think there is a better way to title this particular video than experimenting with cats. How about observing cats or I was playing with cats. But I think this message in the title of saying I experimented with cats will send the wrong message to a lot of people. I’m coming to you from a cat mother and I have seen you in person many times.

The black and White cat, male or female, has been fixed according to the notch on the ear. This class was excellent! I had a feral cat, and it took me a long time to gain her trust. She was with me for over 13 years. The best cat I ever had. You are correct about watching cats and learning to deal with people better. I wish more people would watch animals. Once in Miami, on a walk, I saw a hen with her chicks laying with a mom cat and kittens. They were all getting along! Thank you for this class and for feeding the cats and making cat friends! They appreciate it!
