Lindsey is completely self-taught on guitar, and so his style is unorthodox and utterly unique. You should try “Big Love” from this same concert, Lindsey all alone on stage with an acoustic guitar - and manages to sound like 3 guitarists at once !
If this tells you anything, every time the band imploded and they had to perform without Lindsey (mostly due to his very volatile interactions with Stevie) - FM *has* to bring in TWO guitarists to play the songs properly.
Perfect comment! Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.
You beat me to it. "BIG Love" really highlights his talent on the guitar.
They had a weird romantic interaction.
Probably the weirdest of any band.
I think at one point or another, they were all with each other
Big Love done live is absurd. Love it.
You should also check out ”Big Love” and ”Never Going Back Again” - Lindsey’s guitar playing is legendary 🤩
You have to watch "Big Love" from this same concert "The Dance". Lindsey is amazing.
Mick Fleetwood is one of the best Drummers of the 20th and 21st Centuries. He compliments Lindsey Buckingham in his guitar solo without a doubt. This Band has had their good times and bad times, but they are so in tuned with each other that they are one of the best bands around. I’m a 67 year old woman who has grown up listening to the Greats of Our Generation.
I am a 68 yr old woman. I saw Fleetwood Mac perform in Cincinnati twice in the 70's. They are still my favorite rock band, and I am so glad to see the younger generation enjoying their music. My 15 yr old grandson Ryan is teaching himself to play guitar. He is a Nirvana fan. I will recommend him to watch this video. Thanks, Sebs. Debi from SW Ohio
Right there with you. I saw them twice in the 70s, twice in the 80s. They were great every time. Have to say this is the best version of Fleetwood Mac. All versions before this are still very much enjoyable. Bob Welch had several members play on his first solo album after leaving the Mac. So much talent in every version.
🖤🎼🖤🎼🖤🎼 .. this is just unreal , even after 40 years .. still , mind blowing. There is another great solo from him .. the song is "Big Love" .. his style is so unique. I admire Lindsey so much. 🎼🖤🎼🖤🎼🖤
Lindsey is incredible!!! ❣️🎶🎧 Love this song and "Big Love" live! Soooo spectacular performance.
Gotta check out "Big Love" from the same concert. An all-time incredible guitar performance.
I'm a 74 year old fan of Buckingham. His guitar playing and song writing skills give me chills ....EVERY SINGLE TIME. Thanks for this one.
Mick Fleetwood (who looks to be in his 60's here) is a very good and underrated drummer. He used to wear a body drum suit where you hit different parts of your body to create drum sounds and he would do a drum-off with another drummer for 15 minutes.
Fantastic band.
Please check Let The Truth Speak by Earthside. You will love it. Cinematic prog rock/metal. Beautiful composition, additional strings and breathtaking vocals from Daniel Tompkins and Gennady Tkachenko-Papizh.
Great reaction. Lindsey is phenomenal with his Travis picking technique / style. As other's have mentioned, Big Love is the best showcase of how versatile his skill is. He and Stevie were originally folk rock singers / players and when merged into the rock scene - the catapulting of Fleetwood Mac evolved. Mick Fleetwood is the drummer. My parents played The Dance concert a lot when I was young and what an amazing band.
Fleeteood Mac got me through the era of teen angst and early adulthood. Their music always had a hit to get you through a breakup.
The 60's through the 90's were exceptional since it was possible to hear this sublime quality across the dial to the extent that it was sometimes impossible to choose what to listen to...The Bands inspiring each other and themselves to rise to even greater heights. Buckingham is one of the most spectacular guitarists of the age and SO-O underrated. While it does have a tonal intonation similar to Pink Floyd; the guitar crying always reminds me of the Steel Guitar from Gordon Lightfoot's Edmund Fitzgerald emulating the wind of the storm, the souls of the terrified Crew Members as well as the families grieving the loss afterwards.
Buckingham's 'I'm So Afraid' is one of the most intricate of Fleetwood Mac's many contributions to a level of quality far beyond excellence from the deepest depths of the soul.
Brilliant singer and guitar player and not to mention he produced their records too. Lindsey is a true American living legend.
You might like early Fleetwood Mac when Pete Green was in the band. Great guitar player, had a spot with John Mayall's Blues Breakers for a while.
Pete formed Fleetwood Mac. He wrote Albatross and Black Magic Woman....
Love John Mayall. He launched so many careers and puts out so many albums including one just a year of 2 ago.
I agree, one of the best solos ever. I had the honour to them live in Stockholm, Sweden, about 10-15 years ago, and to see that song live was quite amazing.
I recommend you to take a look at the song Big Love from the same concert, LB alone on stage with an acoustic guitar
Hey Sebs, another great one! You obviously loved this version so maybe check out the live version from their 1982 Mirage tour. That’ll knock your socks off as well! Dare I say that ‘82 live version may be better!👍
Very emotional song, and one of my favorites. ❤
When Lindsey and Stevie joined FWM , Mick at first was concerned that Lindsey finger picked and told him he should probably use a pick...and Stevie stepped in immediately and was like "nooo".
Let that genius be!!!
If you're digging the fingerstyle of playing, please check out the Tedeschi Trucks band. Derek Trucks is one of best at it, some say he is the best. Midnight in Harlem at crossroads bluesfest.
Also, Susan Tedeschi has one of the best voices around. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
I can listen to that over and over again
This is the song I show people who have never heard any of Fleetwood Mac’s music!! Pure fire 🔥🎸🎤🎼 He can sing too!!!! This is from their 1997 show “The Dance” ♥️ You should react to each song from this show one at a time!!
So underrated yes beautiful,he could make you feel those emotions definitely a hidden Gem for me and another Live Big Love everyone compliments each other in that Band and he is so into his guitar HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL ❤️🤘🎶🎵🎼🎵🎶🎸
Have seen Fleetwood Mac, together and individually, more times than I can count. I saw Buckingham/Nicks before Fleetwood Mac several times as well. Always wonderful and Lindsey has always been my absolute fave.
Lucky. Wish I'd had the chance to see them before they joined the Mac also. Did get their album at the time though, still have it.
Such a treat cruising “memory lane” with you Sebs😊
Love this song. Saw Fleetwood Mac in 2013 and Lindsey's solo on this song gave me chills.
Love, love, love this, and love Lindsey!!! Just epic!!! ❤
such a big big sound Mick, John, Linsey, and Christine unbelievable group years before there time
Favorite guitar solo
Fleetwood Mac live in Boston
"Come"
He’s incredible. Mind blowing.
Another guitarist who is so severely underrated is Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Take a deep dive into his catalog of work. On a sidenote, Mike Campbell toured with Fleetwood Mac when Lindsey Buckingham wasn’t a part of the group. Mike Campbell can play all of Lindsey’s riffs. Lindsey Buckingham also played with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on a song called Walls. Anyway, the history is deep and sometimes convoluted. But yet it all comes together beautifully in song.
I am 69 years old. I was a (very young) Fleetwood Mac fan before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined the band, as I had a thing for Blues/Rock. Once those two joined, those two changed the entire dynamics of the band. Most fans liked the newer version of the band, because of Stevie Nicks vocals. I was always drawn towards Lindsey Buckingham's stellar guitar work. He is in my viewpoint is the most underrated guitarist in Rock and Roll history. And Mich Fleetwood was always a demon on the drums.
I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac. Back then, all this brilliant music was just ... radio.
If you're looking to look even further back at rock n roll bad-asses, check out The Small Faces. It's a bit tough to find live performances, but Tin Soldier is a gem (guest starring the beautiful Miss PP Arnold). The Small Faces were *way* before their time and deserve *a lot* more fanfare than they've been given.
One of my favorite guitarists, so much feeling in his music.
big love by Mac live phenomenal lindsey performance
Yes, Lindsey is so amazing and underappreciated!
Hello Sebs! Lindsay Buckingham=Rock and Roll Royalty! Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Michigan.
That Rick Turner guitar that Lindsey uses came about actually because of John McVie. Before Lindsey & Stevie joined the band, Lindsey preferred Fender guitars. John & Mick asked him to switch to a Les Paul by Gibson. Peter Green the original guitarist and who named the band, Fleetwood Mac, because he said John & Mick were the best rhythm section in the world. Peter used a Les Paul and so did his replacement Bob Welch, who Lindsey replaced, they wanted the thicker sound of the Les Paul. Being new to the band, Lindsey switched but he never liked the action of the Les Paul as compared to his Strat & Tele. John who switches bass styles between a pick and fingers wanted a bass that he didn't have to switch out for which style he wanted play, so he originally got with Rick Turner to make him a bass with the action he wanted. So, Lindsey asked him if he could make a guitar that had the sound of a Les Paul but the fret action of strat. Hince, Lindsey Guitar.
Having seen them perform this live more than once, I could only hope to convey the level of emotion Buckingham’s performance elicited in me and I’m sure all in attendance. The final two times I saw them, the last in 2014, Lyndsey was clearly dominant and the star of band.
I got to see them whole band live about 15 years ago. It was awesome.
Fantastic live band
Yeah. Lindsey Buckingham. Song: Big Love. Same concert. You gotta see this.
I just said the same thing
Absolutely 💯
I love Fleetwood Mac so much! I'm 42, they became my favorite band when I was 15, in the late 90s. I saw them in Nashville it was so good even tho they were aging lol.
I did one of my research papers on the history of the band. There's been a few different lineups. They started in the 60s as a blues band in London. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are the founders and it's their band hence the name. Stevie and Lindsey were already making music together, they put out an album together as Buckingham Nicks. I don't remember how they met up but when they did it was magic 💜
Oh man, you should really check out one of Lindsey's live solo performances of "Big Love".
I agree Lindsay is underated especially his great guitar skills. Also he had a great song Im in Trouble in 81, what a vibe worth checking out.
This entire show is Fleetwood Mac at its greatest to me. Perfectly seasoned greatness. ❤❤❤❤now I have to go watch it again.
Great reaction!! Lindsay isn't included in nearly enough conversations on 'great guitarists' - and it's a shame, because he is phenomenal! His style, melodic nature - it's truly unique! First time I heard this song was on The Dance live release from '97. I didn't have Fleetwood Mac's self-titled album at that point (Rumours, Tango In The Night & Greatest Hits, yes). Had to pick my jaw off the floor. I think I repeated the song several times in a row - I was blown away! Then I got the DVD of the concert & saw his style - blown away again - he makes it look effortless.
Special kudos given to Christine (RIP) on keys, Stevie (vocal harmonies), & especially John (bass) & Mick (drums) for a KILLER rhythm!!
spot on the guitar is crying.
This concert is available on DVD. Called the dance. But it you won't regret it
Dude as a musician you need to watch- “while my guitar gently weeps” cover by Yellow Matter Custard. I’m a drummer that’s been playing metal and prog for 20+ years and this stands out as one of the best guitar performances I’ve ever seen. It’s Paul Gilbert and Mike Portnoy so you know it’s insane.
He is incredible. Seeing him live up close was a spiritual experience, along with Stevie Nicks and the rest of Fleetwood Mac.
Sebs - “Inspired” is the word I believe you were looking for
Less here for FM than just to watch Lindsey again. He always finger picks like this, anytime you hear any FM song with him on it this is what he's doing. I've seen FM twice, and always expect my attention to be on Christine and Stevie, but Lindsey's playing always steals the show for me. And you mentioned Stevie's vocals harmonizing with him so well, they were a duo for many years before joining the Mac.
The best version of this song by far is the 'Cleveland, Ohio 1980' live version. Lindsey's solo on that performance is on another level.
My two favorite Fleetwood Mac songs are this and Gold Dust Woman. And yes, Buckingham is criminally underrated as a guitarist by the general public.
Chet Atkins was an amazing "Picker". He had a number of people that he considered "True Pickers" like himself. One of those people is this Aussie that started playing drums before going to guitar. Check out Tommy Emmanuel. Try Mombasa. You will see that even though he uses a pick he is also using his nails to pick. You will also see that he was a drummer to begin with. He is also one of the nicest humans you would ever meet.
Love the channel sebs, see you love guitarists, so check out the shadows and their guitarist hank Marvin doing the songs apache, & wonderful land
I'd love to hear your take on "Big Love," but this was incredible. I feel like for those of us who weren't teens in Fleetwood Mac's prime, Lindsey Buckingham never gets enough credit. Phenomenal player.
Lindsey Buckingham is one of my favourite guitarists but if you concentrate too much on his playing you miss out on John McVie's bass.
Awesome. Thank you. Try Derek Truck's solo in "Midnight in Harlem" live Derek Truck's Band
I love his playing on Gold with John Stewart and Stevie Nicks!
Hey Sabs....long time viewer....you love this, his best full album in my opinion and so under rated...BUCKINHAM NICKS...every song beginning to end should have been on the radio...peace
He is insanely underrated. His skill is phenomenal .
You should watch the live versions of "Big Love" and "I Go Insane". You would swear it was more than one guitar! Lindsey Buckingham is a genius. He manages to create the bass line with his thumb while maintaining a finger-picking running line solo over the top. TRUST ME! The guitarist in you will geek out.
Watch him perform Big Love! ❤️
You must listen to Big Love!
Damn…..it’s been so long since I’ve heard this song…….and I love it. Yes….I had not thought of how much, during the instrumentals, they sound like Floyd! Buckingham is such an emotive player….like Gilmore. Criminally underrated…..I guess because in FM, the style of the songs did not lend themselves to long guitar solos where he could shine. If the songs were more guitar based in FM, Buckingham would be known to be in the top 20….consistently, IMO.
Check out their song Big Love!!
Check out /Allison Krause “Sawin on the Strings”
Also
foggy mountain breakdown with Steve Martin. Yes the actor. He is fantastic
He did only once play a better Solo than he did here - it was the same song in Boston in 2010, the solo was 3 Minutes loinger then this one and he really played his heart out there. Maybe in some time you can react to this as well - it is on youtube too. The dance was a fantastic concert i have it on DVD and rewatch it every now and then. Every song was top notch, fantrastic.
Yes, please react to Lindsay’s ‘Big Love’
The chain… its iconic…
Check out Silver Springs from this show. The dynamics between Lindsay and Stevie on the vocals is absolutely amazing.
If you have a "great guitar playing" playlist, and Big Love (live) isn't on it, then your playlist is incomplete (or very flawed). I'm most familiar with the version from The Dance.
If you want to know Fleetwood Mac, I suggest that you check out some of their older stuff... like before they became "The Stevie Nicks Band."
You oughta check out the Buckingham/Nicks record, made around '72 before joining FM....
For me, Lindsey Buckingham is one of those great guitarists who make the guitar lyrically sing, but still rock. It’s hard to describe. There are some rock guitarists who are great-Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, but to me it sounds like rock. Others, - like Lindsey, Carlos Santana, Joe Walsh, make to guitar sing with them. Love it!
Brian May is also one who can make his guitar sing. In fact, he speaks of “her” (his guitar, The Red Special’s) “voice”, and purposely composed many of his solos to make his guitar “sing a verse” that was thematically related but not identical to the human vocalist’s verses.
By the way, Midnight in Harlem "live in e town" version, check out the bass player and the drummers
That was beautiful! Thank you
And a bit of trivia...the woman you see singing with him was his long time girlfriend Stevie Nicks. Interestingly, Fleetwood Mac tried to enlist Lindsey Buckingham for a long time but he wouldn't join their band without Stevie Nicks. Eventually they both joined the band and then produced some of the most massive records in history (think Rumors), including several songs sung strictly by Stevie which turned out to be some of their biggest hits.
one thing that could NEVER be said about Lindsey, is that he didn't make the guitar cry or sing
Two words - "BIG LOVE".
‘Trouble’ is a good song, from when he went solo.
Don't sleep on Christine McVee's backing vocals, either. She was amazing.
Lindsey should be recognised as one of the best guitarrists among guys like Knopler, Clapton, Gilmour. If there's a guitarrists who is criminally underrated is LB. I whish I could Watch him one last time!
Treat yourself to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances of Big Love and Landslide. Both are done accoustic, feature just he and Stevie. They also performed them live on Letterman (video for both are here on CZcams). Both highlight his amazing finger picking style and Big Love has bits of Stevie on the Chorus which accent the chemistry of their voices punctuating just bits of his epic pieces. Not every live performance highlights that bit of Stevie which puts it over the tip.
Highly recommend both and the live from 1976 version of this.
Big love “live” will blow your mind he plays 3 parts at the same time
The thing about Lindsey is he changes the guitar solo slightly each tour. I've seen Fleetwood Mac 6 times and his solo show twice (the arrangement of the whole song on his solo shows is stunning) and each time there's a slight tweak that makes it new even though it's still basically the same solo. My favorite version is the Live In Boston performance from 2004 and then his solo live album from 2012. This version actually isn't anywhere near my favorite but it's the band's most famous live performance so everyone automatically thinks of it.
I know everyone is saying listen to Big Love, but I would recommend Go Insane from this live concert. It's one of his solo songs from the 1980's that he rearranged as a solo instrumental. It's pretty nuts.
My favorite guitar player. 2 guitarists had do what he did, after he got the sack.
He had a really good solo album, you also need to watch Jeff Healy, he is a great guitarist
Check out the 1976 version of this song at California Jam I think. It's incredible!
Can't forget about the drums!!!
Haven't taken time to read all the comments so this may be a duplicate, but you need to listen to the version of this song from A performance from the late 1970s. I'm thinking 1977? The emotions were a lot fresher and therefore the song is more raw and as expressive as he was in this performance, I think it's doubled or tripled in the earlier performance. There's also a version of Go your own Way from that era. And in that live performance he absolutely blows up the guitar on the solo like I've never heard him play before
This is my favourite song that is about the subject of someone’s depression.
You NEED to go watch Big Love from the same concert. Just Lindsey doing things with 1 guitar that will melt your brain.
I plan to learn guitar now, I don't care if it's bass or electric guitar in honor of one of my best friends who died about a week ago and was an amazing guitar player.
Buckingham/Nicks. Good stuff on there too. I had that album before I bought my first Fleetwood Mac.
Check out music by The Band. A collection of some of the best, but least known musical talent. Biggest songs are Don't Do It, The Weight and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.
This man and Roy Clark the best imo.
The best solos are the ones whose only flaw is that they have to end.
Finger pluckers!!
Dire Straits Mark Knopler
Check out Telegraph Road live from Alchemy 1983....fantastic!!
Thank you and Enjoy!
