I agree that Knopfler performed even better in that live version, but what I missed in that one is the band dynamics. It was just average. In the Alchemy version the band dynamics was out of this world, tempo changes, the keyboardist kind of taking over one of Knopflers sequences in one of his solos, and Knopfler just let go of his guitar and just looked in awe as it happened. In the Wembly 85 performance, that magic was unfortunately kind of missing.

Mark Knopfler was so fast and fluent on the guitar, in a friendly "cutting heads" exhibition during a concert, Eddie Van Halen smiled, bowed, and gave the stage to Mark. His "chickin pickin" finger style picking impressed the best. Chet Atkins (Mr. Guitar) gave him the master knod.

Mark Knopfler allowed Terry Williams to let it rip on the drums because it was the first time his father was seeing him play in concert. Knopfler responded with an extended guitar solo.

I feel the absolute genius of this live extended version is EVERY riff and excursion on MK's guitar is based entirely on the chord structure, progression and melody of the song. He never departs to go off-piste in showing his finger picking range: he blows it out of the water constraining himself such that every solo phrase is a complex yet melodic echo of the song. It's why it has zero dissonance. And this live performance, every group member played out of his skin... including their new drummer playing to his parents in the crowd... the GOAT is Mark.

Hi so glad you watched this. I was at the gig and i was clapping with everyone else it's not a add on. Another one to watch from the same gig "Dire Straits-Telegraph Road Live- aLCHEMY Tour 1983" again the band at it's best.

Can I just say it's not about the wrong choice, I've noticed alot of reactions from other reactors tend to think Live is best, but when 99% of these tunes came out we listened and love the studio versions.
    However this is excellent. Lol

You didn't mess up -- it's never a mistake to listen to the album version first. But it would be a mistake to not then hear this all-time stunning live performance... And you didn't make that mistake! (BTW it would also be a mistake to not see the Alchemy Live! version of _Telegraph Road_...)

Great reactions. During the '70's, '80's and '90's I attempted to attend every conceivable genre of live music concerts (Rock, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Blues, Reggae). One thing that was a constant is musicians love experimenting with their established songs. It's a main reason why live versions are usually longer than the studio versions. My first experience with Dire Straits was during the film "An Officer and a Gentleman". Richard Gere was listening to "Tunnel of Love" on the jukebox. That interlude stuck with me, and I just had to know who performed it.

I watch a lot of reaction videos and never normally comment but I love that you both really got this! Probably my favourite band of all time and this is one of my favourite performances if not my all time favourite! It's so awesome that people are still discovering and loving it! Keep it up 🎸🎸🎸🎸

I can't believe you never heard this version before. Being a live concert if anything wrong happens, everyone will know. So the pressure on the band and crew is just ginormous. During the first part of the solo, Mark turns to Terry Williams ( the drummer) and asks how did he keep up with it. Terry responded with everything he had, and then with even more. Now you MUST react to Telegraph Road, Private Investigations and Tunnel of Love from this same concert. Keep it going, you're doing a great job.
Edit: I can't believe I forgot to subscribe to your channel before. Better late than never, right? I do it now. Kind regards from a Portuguese in "sunny" Ireland.

Most live recordings have parts re-recorded and overdubbed for release. Not Alchemy. This sounds exactly how it was performed.

Sometimes but very rarely a live performance is so sublime it transcends all musical genres so no matter your taste in music you can only watch and listen in dumbstruck amazement this is one sutch performance. The gods looked down on the band and it all came together and they could do no wrong. Just pure perfection

For years I didn't know they were British. When he said way down south in London town, thought some place was called London town in the USA south. I've never been to Britain. They sounded a lot like a Southern Rock band at the time. Always loved this song.

The whole place was jumping, I was on the balcony and we thought it was coming down

Now to the live version of Telegraph Road

What you see is what you get with this live album! Absolutely no cuts, edits, over dubs nothing at all! What was recorded on the night went strait to the record, it was a special album but from what I've seen they always smash it! If youre going to do another one from straits may i suggest Tunnel of Love Live at Wembley. I saw that concert when i was 7 and it changed my life no exaggeration! 30 years a musician and still counting 😊

Musicians used to be Masters of their craft, able to play, improvise without any computer tech correctiing all their mistakes, without having to puzzle together a song from a thousand takes just to have a good version. Masterclass, one of the best performances I have ever heard, nothing today can match this anymore sadly, I would love to have something new that just blows my mind, but my mind stayed unblown for the last 20 years 😞

Mark's amazing talent was making even the most complex song appear effortless... ...that is genius.
I had the privilege of seeing him playing close up in Doncaster UK supporting a band (something Hillbillys?) I was a couple of feet a way from him and couldn't believe his Jeans had ironed front creases them! Local news cover it - My kids spotted me in the tape/video - I was the one with my mouth open apparently - Good days.
