Camino de Santiago Days 6-10 | Surviving an INTENSE Heat Wave (2023)

- Join me as I walk the Camino de Santiago through Navarra and La Rioja, Spain in the middle of a heatwave. By a stroke of luck, I make a new friend who helps care for my terrible blisters, and I’m able to practice my Spanish skills with my two new walking companions. We stop at La Forja de Ayegui, the Irache wine fountain, and even pick some tasty blackberries along the way. Plus, find out why I had to (sadly) take the bus to Navarrete 😢. Don't miss out on this exciting episode where I walk the Camino Frances through Estella, Los Arcos (Sansol), Logroño, and Navarrete.

Loving your videos of the Camino. You endured one awful heatwave and did a great job!! Blisters plagued my Camino too, and I learned a lot along the way. Can’t wait for Camino 2 in 2025! Thank you again for sharing!!
Thank you! The heatwave and blisters were tough, but they're all part of the journey, right? Yesss, 2025 might be the year I make it back for another Camino.. tbd! 😉
Thank you for sharing! You seem such a nice person! Spanish pronunciation tip: it is Logroño, not LoNgroño... I will do my way in September so binch watching all Camino vlogs...
Hikers wool is great for preventing blisters.
Another great, true to life video. Thanks again for sharing your journey.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Jen,
I’m a new subscriber here, I did SJPDP to Leon in 18 days back in April and May, I love watching videos about the Camino because I’m probably obsessed with it. I’m thinking about finishing next year from Leon, but I need to plan very well because time is always a problem for me. I love walking the Camino and make new friends and sometimes all by myself. It’s always nice to see your beautiful smile.
Hi Oscar, thanks for subscribing to my channel! It means a lot. I totally get your obsession and can relate. I’m already looking forward to taking on the other routes of the Camino or doing segments of the Frances in the future. Glad to connect with you here and I hope my videos provide inspiration for your next Camino! ✨
Wow that sunrise was amazing!
I missed the wine Fountain... I think I was trying to avoid some hills by taking an alternative! 😊
A heat wave, that's no fun.
I was there in oktober. Still a bit hot some days, but still ok!
All the best! Kaat
October must be a nice time to go! Was it crowded or were there less people at that time?
@@jenontherunn I didn't have the feeling that it was very crowded. Of course I can't compare. Especially from Sarria there were more. When we arrived, there we're about 1000 people arriving that day, but I heard that in the high season up to 4000 people arrive there daily!
It was nice that I didn't have to stress about finding myself a place to stay. I often made reservations, but mostly on the day itself around lunchtime. 😁
So how was the weather...I'm heading off fromSJPDP on 17th Sept this year...my late husband's birthday....some have commented it will be getting too cold....?
@@StepsbyKaatje
@@margaretcarman468 No, I don't think so, but of course you never know what the weather will be like, but normally you'll be fine.
I crossed the Pyrenees on foot on October, 9th and really the weather was perfect. It stayed nice and dry until around the 15th. Then the rain came, but you van dress for that. At night you sleep in albergues, so time to dry your stuff. I biked most of the Camino, but finally hiked again from Sarria. I arrived on the 25th of october in Santiago. Around that time there was a lot of rain, but not very cold.
Go for it! Buen Camino!
Great video Jen, I did few stages on my bike, great place and very spiritual adventure in finding many answers and solutions ... much love ❤
Thank you for watching!! Love to hear from all the cyclist pilgrims out there. Seems like a great way to do the Camino! Great to connect here - buen camino, friend!
Planning to do this in July! Thank you so much for the great tips!
You're so welcome! Stay tuned for more tips here coming soon! Happy to answer any questions you have ✨
Jen con tanto calor no beber vino, solo Agua. Y para caminatas siempre un número más en las deportivas .las imagenes de los pueblos preciosas.😊
Gracias por tus recomendaciones, Ana 😃Buen Camino!
Jen, It’s George. Do you recognize me from my small pic here on CZcams. I am amazed someone I met made a CZcams video. Great job! Buen Camino
Hey George!! George from Georgia, right? So great to reconnect with you here 🙌🏼 thank you so much for watching - glad you enjoyed the video! I just released episode 3 in the series today. Hope the rest of your Camino was good :)
@@jenontherunn Yes, George from Georgia :) yes I was so happy to see your video. I really enjoyed it. I will watch the next episode now and look forward to more.
@@gfree8037 Thanks so much for tuning in, George! 🙌 Hope all is well!!
Well done! I started in SJPDP during that heatwave, up to Orisson and then further up to Roncesvalles 🥵
Very hot, but also definitely cool :)
Agreed! Wow, doing that during the heatwave must have been intense! 👏 👏
Jen, nice video, takes me back to the Camino ... One thing though: you set a bad example with the wine - you are supposed to just have a small amount and NOT fill up a bottle. Leave some for others ...
Me encanta ......que gran trabajo 🤩
Gracias, Mario, por todo! ✨💛 Espero que te disfrutes ver el video!! El próximo video está aquí ahora, Alfonso y yo caminamos más jaja y visitamos Grañón
@@jenontherunn of course I'll see it...GRAÑON 😍...Te envío un abrazo grande 🫂
What time of year did you walk?
When did you walk?.I walked Mid August til 9/29, Camino Frances, 500 miles, incredible but hot!
I bet it was hot! I walked from mid august until 9/20! Our dates were almost the same!
15 € for a night in a public albergue? Just 10 yrs ago, it was € 5 or 6...
Prices have really risen since the pandemic!
What month of the year was it?
I was there from August to September!
Jen, what day did you start? I may have crossed paths. I walked from July 27-August 30. The Hokas. 🥹 Blisters. That and sun were my biggest worries. Luckily zero blisters with Altra Lone Peaks and super thin sock liners under the wool outers (someone told me that trick).
Hey! Thanks for your comment! I started in the middle of August from SJPDP. Where did you start from? I loved my Hokas, but I accidentally ordered them a half size too small. Also, once I started applying vaseline everyday, that made a HUGE difference.
Altra’s are wonderful. I wore the Olympus and loved them; and, no blisters. Buen Camino
@@jenontherunn I started at SJPDP July 27, finished at Santiago on Aug 30-31, flew home to the US on Sept 5. The 4th of September my mom passed away, and so (unable to be there with her) I went back to @lacasadelosdioses near Astoria to spend the day with wonderful friends who run it.
