Airless honeycomb tire install on Gotrax GXL

  • This was way harder than I thought but hopefully you can learn from my experience.
    My scooter is a Gotrax GXL and the tires I bought didn't specify that they fit my model but after researching a bit I found that the measurements were correct so I tried it and they work great so far, I've been riding them for about 3 months and I'm so glad I upgraded.
    Aside from never having to pump or replace your tires again, these make the ride smoother and help you go faster, and extend battery life.
    Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, and here are the links to the tires and tools I got on Amazon:

    Okay, first, thank you for a realistic video!! Second, thanks to you, I think I did this in just about 15 minutes per wheel. Next, your video convinced me I might have a chance to actually do this. I am not technically inclined at all! Boiling the tires for about 7-9 minutes and flipping them in the middle of that took the most time of the job. Your video and another one used a metal object to get the tire off the rim. I was able to use the rubber coated handle of a pair of wire cutters to peel the original tires off. It totally worked and I did not scratch my rims. I used tongs to remove the tires from the water and oven mitts to hold and squeeze the tires on the rims. They just slipped on in seconds!
    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! I was really freaked out at the prospect of attempting such a feat as other videos (including the beginning of yours) made it seem daunting! The right tools and following your instructions made it easy!
    Oh, one more thing, thank you for your 6 month review, too. I only have a 1.2 mile commute to work so the car was a waste. three weeks in, two flats and both of your videos made me think installing solid tires would be a worthwhile adventure.

    Follow up comment. My wheels are durable as hell now but I don't live in smooth riding sunny California so without the air to act as shocks its a really rough ride. It hurts my wrists and knees significantly more to ride now. If you live somewhere bumpy you might try the goo that automatically seals holes inside the tube before switching to airless. Plus my and my dad together couldn't get the wheels on so I had to pay 60 bucks for my local bike shop to do it for me.

    Changing tires on the GXL (or any of the m365 variants) is a horrible pain. Having previously owned a Ninebot es2, with solid tires - I definitely miss not having to worry about flats. I'm seriously considering switching to honeycomb tires on my GXL.

    Just got a flat on my GoTrax Apex scooter. Back wheel complete when flat when coming back home from work, I think it might’ve been the overuse. Already have 100 miles on the thing, but I had JUST bought the scooter in August. Disappointed to say the least, but if I buy these tires can I replace the Apex Scooter tires? What difference in terms of ride quality will it have?

    • @TeslaIvan
      @TeslaIvan  Před 2 lety +1

      Not familiar with the Apex, but you should look at the Apex wheel dimensions (width and diameter) and as long as they match whatever tires you buy it should be fine. At least that’s what I did

  • @coolbreeze1564
    @coolbreeze1564 Před 2 lety +1

    I took a 2x8 board doing a hole in the middle big enough for a nut on the tire to fit in after you boil a tire for 20 to 30 minutes you put that tire put the wheel on that board then you put the tire on the rim and step on it it takes two people to step on it to get the tire to slip on real easy less than 5 minutes. But then you had the problem of being lopsided like he shows you we took c-clamp and just screwed it onto the tire until it popped in it was just that easy think about it try it good luck

  • @barryaronson9697
    @barryaronson9697 Před rokem

    I would highly recommend liberal amounts of soapy water on both the rim and the tire before installing the tire. It will be more slippery than WD-40. Also, WD-40 is petroleum based and will interact with rubber. Rather than bike tire levers, get a larger set such as used for motorcycle tires. I think they are about $14.00 on Amazon.
