Rodgers statistically at the end of his time with McCarthy to his first year with Lafleur had declined even though they went 13-3 and got blown out by the 49ers in the NFC Championship in Lafleurs first year so the writing was on the wall maybe they should look at a future secession plan. The Packers never thought he was gonna win another 2 MVPs after they drafted Jordan. After the 2 MVPs though he had arguably his worst year since he was a first year starter so it made it easy to justify trading him.

If they were drafting a QB for the future, why was it Penix and not McCarthy? Penix is 24 years old and is already fully developed to play now. McCarthy is more talented, is 21 years old and needs to sit and learn before being in a starting role. By the time Cousin’s contract ends Penix will be 28 years old and if Penix starts before Kirk’s contract ends they’ll still be paying Kirk alot of money. I can understand drafting a QB to sit under Kirk, even though Atlanta NEEDS help on defense, but why was it Penix out of the 3 still available?

the move was dumb given that the falcons signed $180 million away to kirk (with a lot of it guaranteed). either kirk looks bad off an acl tear and being "old" which leads the falcons to move forward with penix, costing atl this massive contract or kirk looks like kirk and plays well in a weak division, making the playoffs and keeping a not-so-young rookie on the bench. you lose something regardless of how the season goes
