    well actually Hendry is very familiar with the 90° rule, which in every cue sport is called "the tangent line".
    When a sliding cue ball strikes the object ball, its direction after collision will be exactly perpendicular to the direction of the object ball.

  • @TheJpf79
    @TheJpf79 Před 6 lety

    Am the same, understanding that the angle of incidence equals the angle of of reflection is one thing, putting it into practice with a cue however, nah am rubbish.
    Hendry and I went to the same school as it happens, a fact the maths teacher Mr McDonald loved to remind everyone weekly.

  • @Zombies8MyPizza
    @Zombies8MyPizza Před 6 lety

    The 90 degree rule doesn't apply to every shot. It only applies when the cue ball is skidding (i.e. stun, no forward roll or backspin) at the moment it hits the object ball. The other rule to keep in mind is the 30 degree rule, which says that the cue ball always comes off of the object ball at an approximate 30 degree angle to the line of aim.

    • @SnookerMate
      @SnookerMate Před 5 lety

      Strictly speaking 90 degrees applies to every shot *at the moment the cueball hits the object ball*, but the cueball will only stay on that line if it has no spin on it. The 30 degree "rule" is a useful but rough approximation for taking rolling (plain ball) spin into account, but it's not a physical law in the same way - it's actually slightly wider that that for half ball and slightly narrower for fuller or thinner, and of course wider the harder the shot is played.

      The term "snooker" was a light hearted pejorative, given to cadets in the British army way back in the 1870's. If a player left the cue ball in such a position that his opponent couldn't hit the ball in play he would have been called a snooker! Bit like "you wally!".

    The cue ball does not come off the object ball at 90 degrees every time, if it did positional play would be impossible.

    • @SnookerMate
      @SnookerMate Před 5 lety

      Instantaneously, it absolutely does, but very quickly any spin on the cueball (including the spin it has from just rolling along the table on a plain ball shot) will change its direction after contact. The harder you play the shot the more you'll notice it go off at 90 degrees first before arcing.

    • @stephanbrunker
      @stephanbrunker Před 3 lety

      If she would have asked for a "stop ball line", perhaps Stephen would have known. With a stop ball, you don't have angular momentum and the 90 degree rule applies. And the sweet spot for a stop ball is somewhat below center. From there, you can alter the path of the cue ball after the collision by appling angular momentum, either forwards or backwards. Interesting are shots with left hand or right handed angular momentum, where a tiny amount of this momentum is also transmitted to the object ball in the moment of contact. Otherwise, the 90° shots where the object ball goes off perpendicular would be impossible.

      Momentum energy, presume you mean kinetic? But yes you're right the collision isnt perfectly elastic (where kinetic energy is conserved). However, Classical Mechanics ignores the losses due to friction and sound because its quite neglibile compared to the kinetic energy of the balls.

    What I hate about 90% of youtube videos is the very annoying background music they put on the video. For real, what is the reason to have that music ???

      Dr Dave learns pool like this and he's not even a pro lol. I think he could have been if he'd dedicated his life to the game like the pro's do, but he's a university professor, which obviously is a much more lucrative career.
