- I'm terrible at snooker, but fortunately I enlisted 7x Snooker World Champion Stephen Hendry to help me explore the maths and physics behind the game.

Hello friends! If you enjoyed this, make sure to subscribe to my channel and press the bell button so you don't miss the next one(s).
I was enjoying it but had to stop when the background music became too annoying over the dialogue
This will be the closest I come to having a conversation with you, so here I go. Liv - I play snooker above average, I play poker above average and I'm also above average intellectually. Please marry me!
Stephen is like....I have 0 idea what you are saying but i'm happy you are here!
Priceless from Hendry. “ I see the shoot I know where I need the cue ball for next shoot and I just put the cue ball there” basically he tells the lady in a nice way he is the master of snooker and not the science. He will always be the man.
I clicked the link because Steven Hendry, but I stayed for physics chick.
And i left because of the annoying fucking music in the background.
Actually 'physics girl' is a famous poker player.
Me too - if you have to put music on a video it means you don't trust the content enough on its own and need to keep people there by the shiney aural ball called music...trust in your content and just have the information...disliked due to music.
His name is actually pronounced Steefen.
@@Eduardot12345556 As well as an engineer.
Some of this applies to 10 pin bowling too, especially the sliding spin which is why the varnish and smoothness of the lane and ball is paramount.
well yea. hitting the 10 bowling pins is very very similar to breaking the balls in a game of pool/snooker
Murphy magic shot 😍😍
Why couldn’t my science teacher be like Liv. I may have paid attention
Fantastic video, Liv!
I wished they'd talked a bit more about the effects of that sweet spot, but I'll experiment next time I'm at a snooker table. I usually hit much lower on the cueball.
@5:41 isn't it angle of incidence (or something) rather than contact patch size?
Nice video, although slightly erratic cutting.
The other fun fact about any pocket billiard table - if you hit a ball, its trajectory almost inevitably ends up in a pocket.
Tim Yushko it's called zero resistance
First time I've had a snooker related semi. Thanks physics chick :-)
This comment deserve more like 😂
Check out her water slide physics video!
well actually Hendry is very familiar with the 90° rule, which in every cue sport is called "the tangent line".
When a sliding cue ball strikes the object ball, its direction after collision will be exactly perpendicular to the direction of the object ball.
Am the same, understanding that the angle of incidence equals the angle of of reflection is one thing, putting it into practice with a cue however, nah am rubbish.
Hendry and I went to the same school as it happens, a fact the maths teacher Mr McDonald loved to remind everyone weekly.
The 90 degree rule doesn't apply to every shot. It only applies when the cue ball is skidding (i.e. stun, no forward roll or backspin) at the moment it hits the object ball. The other rule to keep in mind is the 30 degree rule, which says that the cue ball always comes off of the object ball at an approximate 30 degree angle to the line of aim.
Strictly speaking 90 degrees applies to every shot *at the moment the cueball hits the object ball*, but the cueball will only stay on that line if it has no spin on it. The 30 degree "rule" is a useful but rough approximation for taking rolling (plain ball) spin into account, but it's not a physical law in the same way - it's actually slightly wider that that for half ball and slightly narrower for fuller or thinner, and of course wider the harder the shot is played.
I've never heard of her before I need to check her out.
Hendry has an awesome taste in watches, apparently. Patek Philippe Nautilus in Titanium! Gorgeous
Can you show me how to pot the pink
Fascinating
Anyone seriously interested in this topic should check out the channel DrDaveBilliards. He is a professor of engineering AND an enthusiastic pool player. He has compiled an ENORMOUS amount of analytical AND empirical data (like high speed video, etc.) on the topic. He has very complete and expert answers on ALL the physical intricacies of cue sports.
GetMeThere1 all the brainee people can only talk about the theory,n i dont think they can practically do what they talk
Check this Dave out, he´s good at talking about AND play pool: drdavebilliards.com/
When I got interested in pool (not snooker, very few tables in Sweden compared to clubs with pool tables) I learned a lot by watching DrDave.
I second this. Dr.Dave is no bullshit, all knowledge, and dope af
behe moth All of Dr Dave's videos include him demonstrating every concept he discusses and shows you how to apply them. Definitely worth watching his videos, most of his stuff is meant to help the beginner-intermediate player to understand the basic physics and learn a few hard-and-fast rules that can be applied to improve your positional play. My positional play improved drastically after just one night of watching a bunch of his videos.
Cheers guys, will def. check him out
what's the ideal shape of the cue tip to get maximum interaction with the cue ball?
You can see it here in this video
Mushroom tip is good for deep screw.
@@Snooker-cn3dm Weed is all you really need.
Holy crap I watched so much poker and best of snooker recently I got really confused that Liv is here and on the last poker hands vid I watched too...
We debate the differences between the physics of snooker amoung many things the Latest Episode of the Speculation Station Podcast. czcams.com/video/bfw4c4-mrhw/video.html
@6:10 Stephen pots the blue ball and the following shot shows the green ball in the pocket.
Someone is colour blind!
Nice video!
I have followed Professional Snooker on TV for many years.I would say the three main aspects are
Positioning,Potting and Safety.I know it is a Sport that needs many Practising Sessions.I ask myself
how did the word Snooker come about. No player would want to be Snookered. It is a part of playing.
I love watching Snooker.❤️.
The term "snooker" was a light hearted pejorative, given to cadets in the British army way back in the 1870's. If a player left the cue ball in such a position that his opponent couldn't hit the ball in play he would have been called a snooker! Bit like "you wally!".
Big up further maths a level and oblique impacts
Good video, but what is up with the lightning? I thought it was a green screen until she bumped into the table.
The way players put spin on the ball is by using static electricity that goes from their fingertips to the cloth, which creates "spin waves"
The intro describe perfectly the difference between snooker and pool.
Holy crap, brains AND beauty...
But... what if... someone else wrote the script for her?
Well, she's good enough to make it sound like it came from her.
WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT THAT NONSENSE !! I WUD RATHER STUDY A GAME OF DRAUGHTS !! FFS SHES A FRUITCAKE !!
She's annoying playing poker, and not playing poker.. What a double talent!!
chakko007
Given that she's got a first in physics from manchester university i doubt that john virgo wrote the script for her.
Should have asked about bounce shots and the physical laws behind that. great video though, I am a big fan of physics, most interesting science by far in my opinion.
Jump shots aren't allowed in snooker
I tried to think of the game mathematically and it doesn't work. You have to play by feel
Did you start playing with a protractor or something?
Everything works accordingly to physics, it's not being played in another universe with different laws, this just smells ignorance, I'm sorry.
Il be honest I subscribed because of her beauty and brains.
He is the best Stephen hendry 👍👍

Science meets Art.
She's the best professional Poker Player in UK, fabulous electric guitar player.

Stephen: When's sexy time?
The cue ball does not come off the object ball at 90 degrees every time, if it did positional play would be impossible.
Instantaneously, it absolutely does, but very quickly any spin on the cueball (including the spin it has from just rolling along the table on a plain ball shot) will change its direction after contact. The harder you play the shot the more you'll notice it go off at 90 degrees first before arcing.
If she would have asked for a "stop ball line", perhaps Stephen would have known. With a stop ball, you don't have angular momentum and the 90 degree rule applies. And the sweet spot for a stop ball is somewhat below center. From there, you can alter the path of the cue ball after the collision by appling angular momentum, either forwards or backwards. Interesting are shots with left hand or right handed angular momentum, where a tiny amount of this momentum is also transmitted to the object ball in the moment of contact. Otherwise, the 90° shots where the object ball goes off perpendicular would be impossible.
Just seen liv steal on golden balls epic lol x
Surely not ALL the momentum energy is conserved as motion, what about sound and friction/heat?
Momentum energy, presume you mean kinetic? But yes you're right the collision isnt perfectly elastic (where kinetic energy is conserved). However, Classical Mechanics ignores the losses due to friction and sound because its quite neglibile compared to the kinetic energy of the balls.
@@jbridgy123456 Oh OK. Never knew that.
Lol Stephens got the sauce
Why the noisy music? Just makes it hard to focus
Liv you can teach me anything lol would be amazing to bump into her at burning man or another music fest
4:01 : Stephen reproduced Shaun Murphy's shot that you can see here : czcams.com/video/T1xcMC4Wk6Y/video.html
Liv, where does your surname come from? Are you from South Africa?
Wow, she is smart and attractive.
and Canadian

KristaL Mac LeoD England has been moved to Canada now? Theresa May has a lot to answer for!! I know 'brexit' got passed but I didn't realise leaving Europe meant going that far away......
@@TheMimetolithman She's English you fool.
u that handle on yourself u moron'
Yeah she is, check out her split or steal game lol
I would love to be her student
Why re-upload?
Andreas cause the snooker world championships is on tv right now, meaning this will get a few more clicks
Moon Head That's not the reason because the world championship is in April to the start of May.
Darren Walton sorry Sherlock. Well a snooker tournament was on mainstream tv when this was uploaded!
It was probably the UK which Ronnie O'Sullivan won hopefully he'll win the Masters which starts today.
umm, v2a and v2b vectors should be swapped 2:30
HEY STE VE>>>>is THAT your NEW squeeze??? (or one of them),
The sweet spot is just above the center.. oh yeah! @4:40
she is the complete package , Wow.
I know right! Stephanie Hendry was known as the Golden Lass! :-)
I thought it was called pool. Is that the technical name?
I wonder if Stephen potted the pink afterwards
I was just looking at 2 balls the entire time
Stephen Hendrys balls?
Alex B 😂
We were all gutted that he didn’t get to pot the brown or even the pink there!
What did she say ???
The captions are fun and random
Lads it gets better, she’s a successful poker pro
We all know what happened after the video 😁.. BANG
Isn't she a poker player?
Yes. She's a polymath !
6:13. She lifts
She studied Physis in Uni
0:36 Actually, the name of the game is to hide the cue ball behind other balls so there is no direct line to the target ball.
Nate Benz Negative
How are you this dumb?
Beauty with brain
For those interested, the DrDaveBilliards channel goes in (ridiculously) great detail on all the physics of billiard related games and the effects on play. Check it out.
That thumbnail though, what is Liv doing?
I could watch a video of paint dry if it had Liv in it.
2.38 unless it's jimmy white hitting the balls .then they will do something completely different
What's her profession, other than Poker, I think I can play poker as well. Is this lady a model, she has good fashion, where can I find her modeling
well,u can explain ur theory radically, but in snooker,it way more hard than u thought, haha
My brain hurts
John Virgo: "well, here we are on this wonderful occasion and we've got an exhibition". As i take out my cue ready to pot the pink John Virgo comments, "inch perfect....absolutely inch perfect". I elegantly stroke my cue getting ready to go for the pink. But i accidentally hit the brown. Liv is in tears, she cannot believe it. John Virgo provides more commentary, "well he went for the screw with loads of bottom there, we did not expect that!". I line up again and go for a shot. As the balls smack against the cushion im drawing my cue back and forth ready for the shot. "ohhhhhhhhh what a shot! And look at that, hes come lovely on the pink." Liv smiles and says "i used to love the physics of snooker but now i much prefer the biology".
Warren Smith love it 😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I'm crying
would=bang
Stephen potted the pink and the brown no doubt
Poker not paying the bills anymore?
Perfect content but the background music is really annoying , BTW Thanks a lot
Liv reminds me a bit of Becky Lynch from the WWE.
Errrr I can make a 40 break
They have plagiarised this from Einstein's Theory of Billiards and other popular Parlour Games, published in 1939. Did the BBC credit Albert or his estate? I think not

4:00 what is this witchcraft?!?!?!?! oh, it's physics :(
She could conserve my momentum if you know what I mean
60 likes and I'll let you in on secret us old boys know
I dont think it matters if she can play snooker or not , she seems to have a lot of
knowledge about the balls.
Just like your mama
Madre mía, what a beautiful girl.
Looks like a girlfriend I had in Spain years ago 🤔
Hendry must have been delighted.
Stephen's probably thinking "Will I go for the pink or the brown?"..
Mmm, decisions decisions..
Granma...
Liv is hot
What I hate about 90% of youtube videos is the very annoying background music they put on the video. For real, what is the reason to have that music ???
If someone learns snooker like this.. I guess he'll be a 50 time world champion lmao xx
Dr Dave learns pool like this and he's not even a pro lol. I think he could have been if he'd dedicated his life to the game like the pro's do, but he's a university professor, which obviously is a much more lucrative career.
why is a poker player talking about snooker? lol
Attractive intelligent woman, snooker this vid has it all
She can have my babies 😁👍
Woody81 why would you wana give your kids up for adoption . Dumb fuck
mr rambo no need for the Mr ok I prefer sir. Do u not understand English I don’t have a wife, missus or gf. I’m a free bird that’s pleases himself
