Fact: you can reduce the amount of money you spend for a deck by using your opponent's money instead
such as maddening concofeny(i know thats spelled wrong) and rise of the dark realm
Sen Triplets said Hi.
Pako Haldan says hi
Love when I get someone's fast rocks xD
So trade?
Screw the snobs who want me to pay for a timetwister just to sit down with them and play commander... You guys are more my speed. Just trying to have some fun with magic no bs involved.
Who would win, a finely tuned and expensive CEDH deck or one angry book.
A finely tuned and expensive CEDH deck built around one angry book
@@ring1313 It's very easy to make a cheap Codie CEDH deck. All you need are Dark Ritual, Angel's Grace, Sickening Dreams and Ad Nauseam with a deck full of lands and 1 mana spells to get there. What Mitch has done is actually suboptimal and random.
@@abiodunmichaelolatokun2844 and then what? Oracle?
@@abiodunmichaelolatokun2844 honestly I don’t think that using inevitable betrayal is all that bad, considering it can disrupt a combo. Your Thassa’s Oracle? My Thassa’s Oracle.
Thoughhh yeah you’d need the early ritual stuff to actually disrupt before a tutor
Cedh has know about the angry book since its release. Some are arguing it might be one of the most powerful decks in the format
Always wanted to do a 0 cost Instant/sorcery deck but As Foretold is expensive, nice to know Codie is the answer.
Isn't as foretold 7 dollars?...
@@DangerousFern26 7 can be a fair amount for some people. As foretold is closer to 10 so :/
@@DangerousFern26 $7 is a lot of money for a single piece of card stock bro, that could be the cost of a meal
@@DangerousFern26 if we are following the deck tech rules of this show that's 20% of the budget
its only 10 dollars
Me: alright, I’m done making 5 color commanders. I don’t think there are any other interesting ways to build them.
Mitch: hold my bauble….
He did. Kind of breaks my heart that I'm still not in reach of most budget decks.
Hey Mitch, I built the deck and wanted to let you know it's an absolute blast to play ! I was looking for a different commander deck with a funny gimmick and Codie filled the spot as if it was meant to be, I literally fell in love ! So thanks for your hard work you put into building your decks, much appreciated !
Looking forward to each fresh installment of the "Crazy Codie Variants," series of decks.
Depending on the legality, you might be unable to do this one in tournament environs, but it's still powerful.
Basically, just use a lot of Artifact Lands, cast Codie on Turn 3, cascade into Tinker ASAP, then using Tinker to Tutor out Thran Temporal Gateway, and having all your nonland permanents be historic.
Or you could just get Tinker with a Tutor, possibly even the one you cascaded off of.
Judge ruling for Quicken:
"After Quicken resolves, you can Suspend a sorcery in your hand any time you can cast an instant. As soon as you actually cast a sorcery, you lose this capability."
-Gatherer / Scryfall
This notably means you can use the suspend ability on any amount of Sorceries at instant speed until you actually traditionally cast a Sorcery.
Can you explain? Sorry for some reason I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this
@@zacharymoore6451 Since quicken lets you cast a sorcery at instant speed, and suspend (presumably foretell too?) only lets you suspend when you "could" cast a sorcery. Since you can cast your next sorcery spell at instant speed, you can suspend cards. This would get around Teferi's restriction too I'd assume
@@zacharymoore6451 Here's an example.
Let's say you somehow have four Ancestral Visions in hand and a Quicken.
You cast and resolve a Quicken on an opponent's turn.
You could then Suspend all four of your Ancestral Visions without consuming your Quicken's timing permission assuming you have the mana to Suspend them.
@@IamtheTolle This post was written out of respect, not one-upmanship. I also learned some neat things along the way.
The reason Quicken works this way with Suspend comes to a technical wording from the Comprehensive Rules:
702.62a Suspend is a keyword that represents three abilities. The first is a static ability that functions while the card with suspend is in a player’s hand. The second and third are triggered abilities that function in the exile zone. “Suspend N-[cost]” means “ *If you could begin to cast this card by putting it onto the stack from your hand* , you may pay [cost] and exile it with N time counters on it. This action doesn’t use the stack,” and “At the beginning of your upkeep, if this card is suspended, remove a time counter from it,” and “When the last time counter is removed from this card, if it’s exiled, play it without paying its mana cost if able. If you can’t, it remains exiled. If you cast a creature spell this way, it gains haste until you lose control of the spell or the permanent it becomes.”
The key wording here is " *If you could begin to cast this card by putting it onto the stack from your hand* ".
Because Quicken can enable this boldfaced section, you can Suspend Sorceries this way, but you haven't technically cast them.
However this is not the case with Foretell.
702.143a Foretell is a keyword that functions while the card with foretell is in a player’s hand. *Any time a player has priority during their turn* , that player may pay {2} and exile a card with foretell from their hand face down. That player may look at that card as long as it remains in exile. They may cast that card after the current turn has ended by paying any foretell cost it has rather than paying that spell’s mana cost. Casting a spell this way follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f-h.
This boldfaced timing restriction does not get modified due to Quicken, so you cannot do the pay {2} to Exile the Foretell for later during an opponent's turn, but you could cast it on a later turn for its Foretell cost from exile through Quicken.
As for Teferi, Time Raveler (aka T3feri) versus Quicken, T3feri wins. See the ruling from Scryfall / Gatherer for him:
"If an effect allows opponents to cast spells any time they could cast an instant (for example, if your opponent also controls a Teferi, Time Raveler and activates his +1 loyalty ability), the restriction of Teferi’s first ability takes precedence over that permission."
@@Quroe_ By all means an appreciated enhancement. I wrote merely based on the text and didn't bother delving further into the comprehensive rules. Curious the interaction between suspend and casting. I love how Wizards has "gotten wise" on some of these old mechanics. Foretell would seem like it would function the same, but clearly they wanted to avoid this type of interaction
Mitch: "I hate chaotic effects, I hate playing against a Possibility Storm. Sure, you can maybe build a cute way to abuse it, but until that happens, it is too time consuming".
Also Mitch: "I will build a deck around Glimpse of Tomorrow".
Man, when I heard those ideas for Glimpse of Tomorrow, I got real excited.
Perhaps a second deck tech on that version of Codie once that's finished?
pretty sure that's coming up with how excited he was about it
Haven’t been this early since Mitch showed off his personal decks
I fell in love with Codie as soon as it was spoiled. I mainly built my deck around the "no nonland permanent" restriction with the only exception being Jadzi to have some crazy storm turns. I also made the deck with multiple Mystical Archive cards, since I love the art.
That Resurgent Belief does give me the idea to use Codie with all Sagas and call it "Codie, the Lore Collector"
Loved the deck! I think I'll have to try this and maybe make a few modifications! Keep the fun decks rolling out!
Codie brings so much value...i made a deck with him only with instants and Sorceries and 8 permanents
Many many carddraw...one extra turn card (money or time) and lot of theft spells, some things to play my instants/sorceries from my graveyard.
I love this deck
Didn't think of pulling out those Suspend Spells for 0 mana 😅 Mindblown and tempted to build it...
Please do a break the bank version of this or another codie deck, I need more Codie in my life:) Great content
Throw the Book at your opponent.
Codie + Fling
A fun little interaction is that you can stack the copy effects in a turn by copying the copy spells so that you can copy the betrayal spell by a lot👌
This is so cool, and I love how excited Mitch is about it!
I’ve been wanting to build commander decks, and see this video gives me the best idea since I just drew an inevitable betrayal out of a booster pack the other day
My favorite part is adding Fractured Identity and giving my opponents a copy of codie… lol
That is funny. I thought about making codie bad gifts.
And then they look at each other. Nod. And start attacking into each other witb codie.
I have been wanting to make my first 5 Color Deck and this one is perfect! I'm looking forward to building and playing this deck. From the Frozen Wastes of Alaska, Thanks Mitch!
It's been a while since you posted this. But I just got around to putting the Inevitable Betrayal deck together and I'm so excited to use it. Thanks for the idea. Loved it since you posted it.
Just saw the video was uploaded. I'm excited to watch it!
I love these videos not only for the decks but also budget cards that will fit will into my other decks
I do really enjoy this format of your videos the most.
love the x spells glimpse of tomorrow version and would love to see it. I too saw that tokens where the way to increase glimpses effectiveness but thought that planeswalkers would fit well with the constant army of tokens protecting them so i went for a "superfloods" deck.
Just out of curiosity, how would you upgrade this to be a higher powered deck but still keeping the theme?
With glimpse of tomorrow, I thought of casting mana severance before hand in the late game, exiling all lands from your library, then you fill your library with game ending permanents, or put in some infinite combos and get them out right away
Been trying to come up with a wacky 0 permanent build with Codie and this gave me a lot of good ideas. Thanks Mitch!
I don't play commander. But this was a fun idea to listen to. Thanks a lot.
It was also very informative. I had not seen cards like this before. So I assumed they would have a null mana value and thus be unplayable with Codie. I did some rules diving to wrap my head around it and learned something new today. Now I am curious if I can make something like this work with a modern deck.
Best wishes!
Book tribal when???
It's funny coz book tribal is just a library haha
Would love to see this deck in action. Mitch should do more games!
Love your stuff man, just made my own variant of a breya deck which is super fun!
I did a similar deck with storm as a focus and I played through 2 cedh decks. It was glorious
You wouldn't happen to ahve a list or something, would you?
You can also play Yidris and take a few 20 minute turns, it allows you to play Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar in colors that actually support food tribal.
Hey man, I would love it if you could discuss the following topic on your channel: Is Evacuation secretly the best boardclear in the game? Compared to the most (?) common cards, Wrath of god and Damnation, it has some great advantages imo. Most obviously, it is an instant, and it is blue. But with the rise of token decks, it often times works very similarly to a "real" boardclear. And in some cases it's straight up better - it circumvents indestructible-effects like Heroic intervention, and graveyard-effects like academy rector. I would love to hear other opinions, since I have put the card in my commander deck with great effect.
* laughs in hypergenesis *
Can’t cast Permanents…. That’s a good one 😂
As Foretold, Finale of Promise, Electrodominance, and any cascade stuff to abuse all these 0 CMC spells 👍🏻😎👍🏻
Cause who wants to wait?
I would love to see a deck based on as much possible Chaos as possible. Red or Rakdos maybe. Just constant wheels, board wipes, board replacements, creature/permanent exchange/shuffles. No real win-cons. just the constant and non-stop Chaotic overturning of the board state and hands and graveyards and libraries.. just CHAOS!!!!
If you wanna do this right, you gotta be in Jeskai so you can play Swarm Intelligence and Hive Mind and talk your group into letting you play Shahrazad.
Im playing around with Rakodos Kroxa and glimpse we'll see where it goes. I noticed glimpse and inevitable betrayal can both be played and they exclude each other in an interesting way.
I had effectively been running a much more expensive version of this idea for a while, with baral at the helm, where everything was take possession effects and clones, but this just seems like a much more fun version, I'm probably going to turn it into this.
There are some 20 1-costing instants that untap a creature. All you need is to tap Codie, cast an untap, triggering his pseudo-cascade, then use the four remaining mana to activate Codie again.
My Codie deck uses Approach of the Second Sun as primary wincon but it runs Inevitable Betrayal and Wheel of Fate as backups
Do you have a decklist?
I want to build this deck and then the one built around Glimpse. Two Codie decks would be awesome!
If you are willing to spend an extra $0.89 on the card ($1.89 total) Double Major, you could get multiple Codie triggers in a turn. Add to that a Harmless Offering or a Switcheroo and you can screw over opponents while keeping your main strategy.
Reminisce, Clear The Mind, and Learn From The Past are really great budget recursion spells for under a $1 each.
The more I think about it, the more dangerous Codie really is.
Wow. That's very interesting. I've been looking for a deck like this
This deck looks fantastic. What would be the recommended land spread ?
Doesn't codie cast trigger goes on the stack before you resolve repeated reverberation? Or am i missing something here?
Dude you are a genius. Keep doing what you do!!
planning to try this deck, any upgrades i should consider?
Can someone explain the rebound interaction Mitch was talking about? I dont understand it and I wanna try to playtest this deck for myself.
I absolutely love it. So much, I think I'll just order the missing parts and give it a go, it looks too fun no to try it.
I look forward to my copy of Inevitable betrayal to sky rocket in price due to this video. Thanks Mitch! Jokes aside I love this interaction
How are you casting inevitable betrayal at instant speed when the time counter that is removed to cast it happens during your upkeep? 20:22 “Quicken”
I'm getting flashbacks to manaless dredge
Imagine a pod of 4 of these Codie decks.
The counter to the codie deck is a codie deck. Well if they are both doing the betrayal strategy
Lol I bought a foil codie cause I wanted to make a deck, thanks for the help!
The tokens do “get shuffled in” to the deck, it’s just that once they get there they stop existing. It still counts towards the permanents you shuffled in, they just don’t physically stay in the deck and clog it up with unplayable cards lol
How would you be able to utilize Howl of the Horde (or Doublecast) to copy Inevitable Betrayal? It's a sorcery, so you can't use it in response to the one mana spell, if you use it before Codie's ability, then it would just copy that spell instead of Inevitable betrayal, and if you use it after Codie, then the cascade triggers on Howl of the Horde.
You can play Inevitable Betrayal until the end of your turn (Codie's tapped mana spell). So you still cast a one mana spell into IB then cast the copy spell (mana allowed) and then you cast IB to copy it.
Starting MTG recently... Love this one! What would be good upgrades for it?
The songs for the transitions is "Magdy Haddad - The Gesus Sun" for anyone wondering =)
I made a Codie deck just to try it out and it instantly became my favorite commander. The amount of mana value is ridiculous. My deck is set up where I’m basically cascading into ramp spells early on (because those are my only 4 cmc or less spells). So, I have a ton of mana by turn 6/7 and can start casting huge spells (8+ cmc) that usually cascade into 5+ cmc spells or just ramp more. If someone takes Codie off the board I have enough mana to easily bring him back or I have enough mana and a very nasty 9 cmc (think profane transfusion) to make that player regret targeting Codie. Not having permanents isn’t a big deal because there is just enough token generation to give me blockers and when I cascade into some combat shenigans spells (ie: Akromas Will) it’s enough to be game over for someone.
Also the fact that Codie is a 5 color commander that you don’t have to worry about fixing his mana base can’t be understated. 3 mana of any color in your starting hand and your playing Codie and ramping on turn 4 (tapping Codie to play 5 cmc spells on turn 4). Plus Codie being colorless has saved me from my friend who plays Eldrazi decks and likes to throw an All is Dust for board wipes lol. And the fact that he is 5 color makes him very versatile to whatever play group you play with.
how it works doublecast? i mean i cast it on the one mana card after the activation of the ability of codie? and it doubles inevitable betrayal too?
Mitch. I would like to make a suggestion involving Codie that i have built and love. Magecraft cards like Witherbloom apprentice, professor onyx, and ral storm conduit. Have 1 of them down before casting codie (hopefully with haste) then cast a 5 drop instant/sorc. Have no 4 drop instant/sorc or less in the deck except for fury storm and chain of smog. You can then add fury storm to the stack targetting the 5drop, then the copy goes to the stack targetting fury storm, keep using the additional created copies to copy fury storm until gameover due to magecraft triggers. Or is you get chain of smog, just keep targetting yourself as it will infinitely copy itself for you.
I have been trying to break this card since it was announced. I feel like i have now accomplished it.
I love your commander desks so much there so much fun.
How exactly do the Sorcery copy spells work? They are not 1 mana, besides a few, which means they would hit some other spells most likely if cast by Codie or would copy the one mana spell used to cascade into them, and you cannot copy it in response. I may be missing something, and I adore this deck, just not sure about that interaction!
How often do your Duel Strike/Doublecast effects hit Inevitable Betrayal considering you're running so many 1 drop spells you could stumble into along the cascade? Would it be worth keeping the minimum spell cost to 2 so you always get double casts?
I had the same question until I realize Codie isn't actually cascading.
The card says "until end of turn, you may cast that card without paying its mana cost", which means you cast a 1-mana spell with Codie's ability first, and you'll hit Inevitable Betrayal inevitably, *_then_* you cast Doublecast and the like followed by Inevitable Betrayal.
I have to say, I love this approach to Codie. Rather than casting AD Nauseam, casting a much more fun/fair spell. I am curious how you would upgrade this deck, while leaving the central spell the same.
i really enjoyed this video, you have excellent content \o/ thank you so miuch !!
So, I wanted to try this deck out, but something came up that I can't find clarification on: Does Codie exile the card you cast without paying the mana costs? I don't see anywhere that clarifies that, and the way you include GY recovery cards implies that it doesn't. The text is "until you exile a card...", Which would imply that it gets exiled, no?
Hoping someone can help me understand this.
KInda want to see a non-budget version of this.
Deck looks sweet Mitch, I be holding the blue suspend spell thinking where to put it, hmm
So question, have you created a Beledros Witherbloom commander deck?
So when i cast inevitable betrayal does it immediately go off. If not then how is this busted?
Here's a cool tech for Codie. Those big cycling creatures from Ikoria. Notably Titanoth Rex and Yidaro
I would like to know when you are going to make a video about the codie deck using Gaea's Will. It sounds really cool.
Okay, so THAT is how you build with Codie.
Gotta be careful with the split cards and x spells. If i remember right (and please correct me if im wrong), The cmc of a split card is the sum of both sides, so codie can hit bigger stuff off it. For example, heaven/earth; whichever half youre casting, its cmc will see both sides. With x spells, on the stack the cmc includes the x value. Continuing the example of heaven/earth; if you cast heaven for x=4, the mana value will come out to 8 since the double green on heaven and double red on earth are seen by the games rules.
This interaction is what makes cards like commit/memory so powerful in yuriko decks, because even if you just cast commit, the cmc is of the card is still 10.
You are correct about the x spells, although I think he included them because he can always cast them for x=0 so that they are still a 1 cmc spell.
The split cards however do not work that like when on the stack. Anywhere other then the stack and you are correct about the cmc of the card.
709.4. In every zone except the stack, the characteristics of a split card are those of its two halves combined. This is a change from previous rules.
709.4b The mana cost of a split card is the combined mana costs of its two halves. A split card’s colors and mana value are determined from its combined mana cost. An effect that refers specifically to the symbols in a split card’s mana cost sees the separate symbols rather than the whole mana cost.
Example: Assault//Battery’s mana cost is {3}{R}{G}. It’s a red and green card with a mana value of 5. If you cast Assault, the resulting spell is a red spell with a mana value of 1.
@@joelmunchel7809 thanks for the clarification, and double thanks for actually citing the rules too!
What do you mean by you don’t have to worry about the suspend cost? Do you mean as in you don’t have to wait for the suspend or it doesn’t matter when it goes off
Suspend is an "alternative casting cost," so when you have an effect that lets you cast it for free, like Codie, you get to ignore the Suspend mechanic and cast it immediately
Dumb question, but aren’t those sorcery speed copy spells kinda useless because they’re more than 1 mana? so they’ll just copy something else, right?
Ya i noticed that too
i made a codie spells deck with the win con of mazes end/field of the dead the broken things you can do with gond gate in play is crazy. you can sapeshift have every gate you get come in untapped netting a ton of mana. the deck list is simple every tutor land spell tutor any card spell and 3 mana kill spell i can run. for mana i run 5 basics all gates 5 fetch lands and 1 of each triome along with a urza saga(targets are a sol ring, map, and amulet of vigor only none spells in the deck) along with i think 1 other land that can get a land back to hand i forget its name. the deck is crazy and i love playing it
When are we going to see the glimpse of tomorrow version of the Codie deck?
Fact: Cards with no mana symbols in the usual location for casting cost have an unpayable mana cost, and as such, have a converted mana cost of zero.
Pull from eternity basically says "Process target face-up card". Like the enchantment Solemnity, I don't know of any other card that fills the same role.
For Solemnity, that role is dedicated counter Hate (except for loyalty counters).
For Pull, it's Regrowth From Exile (in a way).
Love this deck, it’ll be the next in my arsenal
Cab those spells that say "copy the next instant or sorcery you play" be cast of off the Codie Mana? If you cast repeated reverberation after you activated Codie wouldn't that trigger his ability and have you go get a spell that cost 3 or less?
You resolve Codie’s effect first, as he doesn’t care when you cast the exiled spell. You have the whole turn to resolve the cast. You can dark ritual, draw into inevitable betrayal, resolve the stack and cast double cast, and then cast betrayal.
"So many 0 Mana Options for Codie to Dominate Your Friends with!" Implying I have friends willing to play magic with me.
so like what doesn't glimpse of tomorrow work on just non permanents right?
Really want to see that land-attacker deck.
Howl of the horde doesn't actually work, right? Since it's a sorcery, you can't cast it in response to the cascade trigger, so you just wind up copying the 1 mana spell you used to cascade into betrayal.
This! This is the content I want to see! 10/10, have a like sir
How does copying Inevitable Betrayal with doublecast work? Wouldn't it just copy the 1 mana spell used to trigger Codie's ability, since it's sorcery speed and thus can't be cast in response to Codie's trigger?
IB can be cast till end of turn according to Codie's ability. So you cast a 1 mana spell to get IB then cast copy spell as long as you have the mana. Then you cast IB to copy it.
I need to see this deck in action... is there any video of that?
Pretty sure The codex is considered the fasted ad Naus deck on CEDH
Some would debate that Rog Silas is sometimes faster.
Not denying that Codie is good, but I think it’s too early to tell. Profane tutor made the deck
Is there a full decklist?
Can someone explain me how Codie goes combo with the spells?
Is the recommended amount of lands 30? If so does this include lands like evolving wildlife that allow me to search for lands?
I meant to say evolving wilds but it auto correct
Doublecast will never work as intended, since it's a sorcery. It will always double the spell you use to start the cascade, instead of the 0 cost one.
Codie let’s you cast the spell until the end of the turn: “Until end of turn, you may cast that card without paying its mana cost.”
@@TheCommandersQuarters oh, sorry. I thought it was a literal cascade, pardon me!
I could have sworn you had posted your deck tech for the glimpse of tomorrow version of Codie but now I can't find it. Am I crazy??
Now when you do this you still have to suspend it and wait the suspend time right?
Man I wanna look at you deck list but the link won’t load for me :(((
This deck looked really cool and interesting, so I picked it up from the link.
I’m curious, though. How exactly does the suspend cheat work? Wouldn’t it still suspend the card after it’s played?
I tried to look up on Google and I couldn’t come up with anything definitive. I’m asking because if I’m bringing the deck I wanna make sure I understand for my playgroup when they ask.
Since Codie specifically says you can cast the spell without paying its mana cost, the Suspend is completely circumvented. Suspend isn't something that triggers when the spell is cast; it's an alternate cost, which means something like Codie lets you ignore it entirely.
Thank you, Andrew!
My codie deck I’m brewing relies on running curse of echoes enchanting yourself then using the pact spells so people die to the upkeep trigger.
I love these types of decks!
