What a good idea, and an insightful take on the Oscars and the movies this year. I have seen roughly 40% of the performances, but I admit I have NOT seen ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. I will watch (or attempt to) this weekend.
For Best Actor, I would select Cillian Murphy as should win/will win. I don’t think I have any ‘Ouchies’ in this category, but..I will say that I think the nomination that WOULD have gone to DiCaprio went to Colman Domingo for Rustin. Please don’t get me wrong, I am a woman of color, and I did enjoy Rustin as the unsung hero of the civil rights movement but I have to say that both Bayard and Maestro are historical Netflix movies, which do not usually get nominations. I also loved Giamatti, he could provide an upset.
For Best Supporting Actor, it gets tricky. I agree with the Ouchie of DeNiro, he seems to play the same role 90% of the time. My personal Ouchie is Sterling K. Brown! I like him and the movie American Fiction, but I think his nomination should have gone to Dominic Sessa for ‘Holdovers’! I have not seen his movie or Barbie or Poor Things, but the academy likes to make things consistent across movies. I see Downey Jr. winning, though ‘villains’ usu don’t fare well, but the Globes and SAGs make me think he will win.
For the Actress categories I see 1 or 2 HUGE upsets! I agree that Carey Mulligan should get an Ouchie, as the ‘suffering’ wife. We should prob get rid of that trope. As much as I am sure Gladstone is phenomenal, and the academy wants to be ‘woke’, I would not be surprised if Emma Stone takes her 2nd Oscar!
For Supporting Actress, I will say that Blunt and America Ferrera should get the ‘Ouchie’. Both roles appear to have just 1 major scene, but supporting roles are meant to have negative or positive affects on the main character. It would be funny if the Oscar went to Danielle Brooks of Color Purple, poetic justice for Oprah’s loss, and the first movie having won NO awards. I do not fully agree the Academy does not like musicals, with Catherine Zeta-Jones’ win for ‘Chicago’. I have not seen Nyad but I think Foster probably should win, but no one has probably seen it. I loved Da’Vine Joy Randolph in Holdovers, so I would go with her as the predicted winner.
Best Picture will probably be Oppenheimer. Both it and Killers of the Flower Moon are over 3 hours, but since Oppenheimer is Nolan, features a very challenging cinematography, and features a man grappling with a horrific invention, it will probably win.
My predictions(here goes nothing!):
Best Supporting Actress: Da Vine Joy Randolph
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr.
Best Actress: Emma Stone
Best Actor: Cillian Murphy
I mean, suffering wives do exist, but it was all what Carey Mulligan was playing...it gets tiring!😅
