When I read the title for this video I was thinking, “This isn’t for me, I love movies but I don’t care about awards “, but then I know how entertaining you two are so I thought I’ll watch for a few minutes.
    40 minutes later… I enjoyed it!
You two are just so fun to watch.
    Thanks.

DJ! Long time Geekvolution fan, didn’t know you had your own channel! Love that this is the first video of yours I’ve seen as I’m pretty excited for Awards season this year.
You both had wonderful picks. Personally, I’m on team Nolan/Oppenheimer, and even though I’m excited that this is seemingly their year, I am bummed that there hasn’t been as many surprises and variety with the winners throughout all the shows. It’s refreshing that y’all had a great variety and reasons to why you picked the winners!
    Throughly entertaining video, great work!

There's a showing of American Fiction at my theater in twenty minutes and it's raining and was on the fence of whether I should leave the house. Your enthusiasm just convinced me to go! So thanks for that

I love watching you two together. your enthusiasm and passion is one of the main reasons why we keep coming back. Not to steal your thunder, DJ, but Grace should be on more frequently. She is personable, funny, smart and confident. I can't think of any females on You Tube that discusses film seriously. I'm not much of Oscar film watcher during the year. I've only watch BARBIE, so far, which I liked a lot. The Kubrick opening pulled me in and won me over. Gerwig was very clever in doing that. I am looking forward to OPPENHEIMER, POOR THINGS and ANATOMY OF A FALL in the future. I have loved all of Jonathan Glazer's past films and since I'm a sucker for history and WWII films, ZONE OF INTEREST is high on the list also. BTW, as a hearing-impaired person, thank you for providing a transcript of the video along with the closed captioning capability (perhaps both functions could be utilized for your live broadcast).

I loved it when you two did this video last year, happy to see it return this year! Great job on all the prep, Grace!
This year’s Best Picture and overall Oscar line-up was a strong collection of films! There was only one I was sour on (Maestro), and even if I wasn’t crazy about The Holdovers and Poor Things, they were very well made and accomplishing what they set out to do-I totally get why others love them.
Personal ranking of the nominees would go:
    1.) Oppenheimer
    2.) Past Lives
    3.) Barbie
    4.) Anatomy of a Fall
5.) Killers of the Flower Moon
    6.) American Fiction
    7.) The Zone of Interest
    8.) The Holdovers
    9.) Poor Things
    10.) Maestro
7 of them were in my personal top ten of the year!
    If I picked the winners:
    Picture: Oppenheimer
    Director: Christopher Nolan
Actor: Cillian Murphy (Wright would be a close second)
    Actress: Sandra Hüller
    O. Screenplay: Anatomy of a Fall
    A. Screenplay: American Fiction
    S. Actor: Ryan Gosling
    S. Actress: Jodie Foster
Animated Feature: The Boy and the Heron (close second, Spider-Verse)
    Score: Oppenheimer
Song: “I’m Just Ken” (bummed “Dane the Night” didn’t make the cut)
    Sound: Oppenheimer
    Production Design: Barbie
    Costume Design: Poor Things
    Cinematography: Oppenheimer
    Editing: Oppenheimer

Great job as usual guys. Although I have a hard disagree with DJ on the latest Indy (a film I honestly did not expect to love as much as I did) I respect the passion that both he and Grace bring to this. As a somewhat older film fanatic, what I love about this channel and what you guys bring to it is the passion of discovery of something that feels like a rarity in this time of everything being streamed- film as art that can only be truly enjoyed in the best possible presentation. Whether it be your screening room or a theater, you guys both express such joy in seeing something new and original on a big screen. It reminds me of when I was a Spielberg kid working in an arthouse in the eighties. Everything was new and exciting. Never lose that, even when you feel like you’re burning out. I promise, there will always be some new vision, some new idea being expressed in a new and exciting way on the cinematic horizon. Long-winded reply, sorry. 😉❤️

When the Annie Awards matchup with the producers. Guild, art director's Guild, critics choice Awards and visual effects society, that film is going to win the Oscar. Spider verse all the way. There's more overlap with Annie's now as the two animation branches have merged into one for the Oscars.

Most certain prediction: it will be unfair, junk films will win and films that will become classic in a near future will be snubbed!

As per usual, I still have not seen every film I've wanted too this past year. But out of my current Top 10, four of the films are Best Picture nominees. So I kinda wanted to highlight my personal Top 10 Non-Best Picture Films where hopefully you could get an extra recommendation from me.
*1. Society of the Snow* (You already highlighted it in the video, no explanation needed. This is my favorite film of 2023. Criterion has an on-going relationship with Netflix and I would freak the fuck out if this film was announce for a physical criterion release. This film is on Netflix.)
*2. Godzilla Minus One* (As a non-Godzilla fanboy, the hype behind this film is real. It is so authentic as a human drama and it's response to PTSD from surviving a war along with the realization that the war for them has not ended. If you were asked to reimagine Gojira 1954 into the modern day, Godzilla Minus One is the film you would ultimately end up with.)
*3. A Thousand & One* (This film was the winner of Sundance 2023 and it was deserving. The film largely focuses on a mother growing up in inner-city poverty as you follow her journey of raising a child in that environment with the goal of setting her son up with the best future possible. Teyanna Taylor absolutely should have had a Lead Actress nomination at the Oscars, she's equally as good as the rest of the nominees and some I'd argue she is more deserving of the nom. This film is on Amazon Prime Video.)
*4. 20 Days in Mariupol* (This documentary follows the first 20 days in Mariupol, Ukraine following the recent invasion by Putin's military. The doc follows a photojournalist for the Associated Press and weaves together a narrative containing various moment and background context behind some of the most iconic and important photos coming out of the war during the very first month of the invasion. As someone who is a photographer who dreams of one day being a photojournalist, this documentary truly impacted a core of my own career interests. I hope it wins the oscar for Best Documentary this year. This documentary is free on PBS' website.)
*5. The Iron Claw* (This film follows a modern greek tragedy of the Von Erich family dynasty in the world of American Wrestling during the 70s. What happens to this family is nothing short of heartbreaking on every level and to learn after watching the film that it was based on a true story makes it even more heartbreaking. I am someone who does not care at all about wrestling, but my god is this film an unforgettable and emotional drama. Zac Efron truly should have been a nominee for Lead Actor at this year's Oscars. He is just as good as the likes of Cillian Murphy, Jeffrey Wright, and Paul Giamatti. The film will eventually be added to Max.)
*6. Monster* (This film is yet another phenomenal film from Japanaese auteur director, Hirokazu Kore-Eda. A director famous for his authenticity in terms of depicting raw and emotional but also quiet human/family dramas. Monster is no different. But Monster does have the unique twist of being told in a style of writing that is very reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa's Rashoman. As it focuses largely on a story of bullying and misunderstanding and highlights the perspective of three different people as they don't quite understand the full story, but eventually comes together in a very nice package. This is one of those films that linger in the back of your mind for weeks after watching. I would love to see a Criterion release in the future.)
*7. Radical* (This film is probably the most uplifting film of the entire list as everything else in all respects is quite depressing in nature. But for this film, it focuses on a new teacher at a school who has a very abnormal style of teaching where instead of following the yearly pre-made lesson plans. He pretty much creates an open forum for his students to research and discuss topics that they are interested in learning about. What's more remarkable is that the film is based on a true story and takes place in an incredibly poor town near the US/Texas border with some of the lowest scoring students in the entire country of Mexico. After the first school year of teaching in this method, his same class became one of the highest-ranking students in the entire nation. Super heartwarming film overall, tho there are some pretty tragic moments sprinkled throughout.)
*8. Saltburn* (It's a love it or hate it film, personally I love it. You've probably heard a lot of online discussion around this controversial film, so I won't say much about it. The film is on Amazon Prime Video.)
*9. How To Have Sex* (Despite the bold title, I guarantee you this film is not what the title lets on. The film is largely pulling a page from Barbie and Poor Thing's playbook in terms of discussing femininity in the real world and the coming of age moment when a woman feels as if they are ready for having sex for the first time. Only for them to go on spring break to an rich resort party scene place and to quickly find out that the act of sex is not as happy as one may think. The film is one of the most raw and authentic depictions of rape culture in the modern day of social media and cellphones. It's truly heartbreaking seeing the main girl's love and excitement quickly dwindle throughout the film's short runtime. I appreciate the film so much for existing, but for me its one of those films that I only need to see one time. When your kids reach high school age and you think it's time to have "the talk", this film is one that I might consider sharing as it gets the message across quite clearly on how not to treat women, or alert them of the dangers that are out there that they are not expecting from their fellow classmates. This film will be coming to Mubi US in early April.)
*10. Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse* (I don't need to explain it. You already know. The film is on Netflix*)

I also would love to see Past Lives win Best Picture, but do realize that the only film likely to win at this point is Oppenheimer. I would love to see Lily Gladstone win Best Actress. I want Barbie to win Production Design. I want Godzilla Minus One to win VFX. And I'd love to see Boy & The Heron win Animated Feature, this film was also absolutely criminally robbed of a Best Score nomination.

If I had to do picks:
Best Picture: Oppenheimer (Poor Things is technically my favorite of the nominees and want it to win if I was in charge, but given the hype around this, unfortunately figured the answer for this was obvious)
    Best Director: Christopher Nolan
    Best Actor: Paul Giamatti
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr.
    Best Actress: Lily Gladstone
Best Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph
    Best Original Screenplay: Past Lives
    Best Adapted Screenplay: Oppenheimer
Best Animated Feature: The Boy and the Heron
Best International Feature Film: The Zone of Interest
Best Live Action Short Film: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
    Best Original Score: Oppenheimer
Best Original Song: "What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish
Best Sound: The Zone of Interest
Best Production Design: Poor Things (fighting between this or Barbie was hard)
    Best Cinematography: Poor Things
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Poor Things
    Best Costume Design: Barbie
Best Film Editing: Killers of the Flower Moon
Best Visual Effects: Godzilla: Minus One
Did not include Documentary film or short cause I haven't seen those nominees unfortunately lol

Indiana Jones might not have been the best movie but any John Williams score is deserving of a nomination.

Maybe, he is great, but this definitely wasn't his best work to date. There were also so many other better scores that they could have nominated.
