Stop, my sides are already in orbit.
The amount of love and effort that went into early Star Wars games is overwhelming.
Almost as much love and effort as Surfer puts into being a schizo on Discord. But seriously, considering the complexity of modelling, texturing and coding in that time period, the fact everything lines up so cleanly with the movie is testament to their dedication. -ED-1TA
@@thebreadcircusThe design technology of The Phantom Menace combined with the blocky aesthetic of games around that era (like Star Wars Demolition) is perfect to me.
While we’re on the subject, does podracing count as breads and circuses, buddy?
@@urthofthenewsun8465 I agree 100%. There's just something special about when games had to be carried by their gameplay and story, rather than graphics alone.
Woaaahh, buddy. Podracing is double breads and circusses. It's breads and circuses in your breads and circuses, there Ashton. When I play podracing in my Star Wars universe, I do it with 100% mathematical efficiency, buddy. -ED-1TA
I feel like we're slowly but surely being conditioned for a Thunderbirds Retrospective Video series.

I really hope this channel gets the monetary support it needs, this is too good to just fade away.
Sadly, I am not one with a lot of disposable income, so all I can really do is hope for it.
We understand, we're hopeful about the future as well. Having good regular viewers is important, every bit as much as monetary support. To everyone who can spare $0, you're still doing your part if you're here to watch. The things you can do for free are still valuable to The Bread Circus.
If you know a person or community who might like our videos, you could tell them where to find us. A few people have said we rekindled an interest, which is always lovely to hear. Convincing the CZcams algorithm that our videos are good, that's a big help. Watching all the way to the end of a video. Leaving a comment and clicking the Like button. All of these make the numbers go up, getting the channel a little way closer to being sustainable. -DZ & ED-1TA
Im doing my part!@@thebreadcircus
My headcanon is the Trade Federation built tanks, STAPs, blaster rifles etc for sale to humanoids, then built humanoid battledroids as an expedient way to use that equipment (& the factories and logistics to build and supply them) when Sidious recruits them. If they'd been out to fight large-scale wars from the start, they'd have more integrated droid/weapon platforms like the Droideka, Vulture, and B2.
(because that's the only way it makes sense to me to have a droid grasping controls designed for humanoid hands)
It makes sense - if the B1 droids were marketed as a cheap way to get a military force up and running, then it would be cost effective to build humanoid droids so that they could make use of existing technology and equipment. I also allows them to quickly crew any type of ship without having to refit it for full automation.
I've been feeling so nostalgic for this game, lately. Nice to see I'm not the only one who fondly remembers the unique atmosphere this game had. Great video!
The leader of the slave labour facility saying “BACK OFF, THIS IS A LEGAL OPERATION” is so good. Classic neimoidian.
I absolutely loved this game as a kid. In the days before the GameCube and rogue squadron 2 (I never had Rogue Squadron 1 as a kid) this was about as close as I could get to experiencing the epic space battles of Star Wars for myself. I would play the two space missions over and over.
I always thought that the Naboo police fighter and Naboo Bomber were super cool designs that deserved to be featured in more games and media beyond just this one game.
Also, fun fact - when I first played the final level, (I was about 7 years old) I kept failing the mission because I could not for the life of me find the shield generator on the droid control ship that you have to disable, and I died over and over.
At some point several days or weeks later, I was able to beat the mission after referencing Star Wars Episode 1 Incredible Cross Sections for the location of the shield generator. Sure enough, it was exactly where it said it should be!
Bravo to the game devs, that's true attention to detail.
Borvo's ship looks like a nice light to medium freighter. Seems like they based it on the Action V freighter and is definitely my favorite ship from this game. I like how all the designs fit in with the Star Wars lived in feel.
The fact that this interlinked with TPM just makes me so happy that i grew up with this game and that era of star wars. I miss it so much
I tried to comment right before you took down the original video into private. I will finally get to finish the video tomorrow when I have the time.
I'd be very interested in seeing you talk about the other Factor 5 games, of course, but I think it would further be neat to explore other Star Wars material with this same formula of approach, things like TIE Fighter, Empire at War, or a full break down of the classic West End Games sourcebook or even board games like Battle for Hoth or the more recent Rebellion. Or to take apart the Thrawn Trilogy in its majesty. There's a lot of things to look at and discuss that I think you could contribute quite a lot of insight for.
Your method of approaching Star Wars lore and analyzing the material is unique and very welcome. I greatly appreciate your clear love for the Expanded Universe and all the surrounding material, the way you approach it and discuss the interconnected and entangled elements of world building.
The number of supermarionation cutaway clips pleases me greatly. At this rate someday soon the videos will reach critical mass.
This brings back childhood memories of playing this game as a child when visiting my uncle. I pretty much just played the first level and then flew around aimlessly in the second one not knowing how to complete it, so anything beyond that is completely new to me.
You missed 1 important thing with Mission 10. In Borvo's mine if you fly your speeder into the blue shield/energy of the temple in the middle of the mine it'll recharge your shields "repairing" your craft. Lt. Sykes even says some dialog "Strange, that energy field strengthened my shields?"
You're absolutely right, I did miss that one on my first playthrough. Though I believe there is some dialogue hinting toward it: I could tell there was something fishy going on, but I moved on after a couple of attempts to find a way into that building.
By the time I was recording footage for the video, I had been inside... but the script was already getting quite long, so we don't show off the recharge. -DZ
These videos are great, I always liked the idea of the Naboo conflict becoming more of a resistance like this! Quietly hopeful for a video on the Starfighter and Jedi Starfighter games from back in the day.
Star Wars always felt like the most "fun" sci-fi universe to make games from. There are so many cool ships in the SW universe, seeing them fleshed out properly really makes games like this really special. Wish the 2017 Battlefront 2 game's starship gamemode got more love when it launched.
As something of an old grognard the sentence "TTRPGs also have a lot of useful lore in them" warms the cockles of my heart!
I love it, awesome long form retrospective and video games. Now all i need is a glass of blue milk.
The nostalgia!!
Bro how has this channel not blown up yet? You guys are so underrated.
This game actually improves the movie. Cool video 10/10
BRO, I've been on a huge Phantom Menace hyper-fixation stint these past few days and had been looking all over for good videos on Battle of Naboo! The timing on this is perfect.
Please do more of this Star Wars games coverage. I love you inside commentary.
Excellent retrospective! Love the delving into the Lore and Nostalgia.
Would be awesome to see Rogue Squadron retrospective. Keeping the great work!
Greetings to my favourite Kakapo
This time he gave a single, stoic nod in the direction of your comment. I think that means he reckons you are a top bloke. -ED-1TA
This was my favorite of the factor 5 games, and its the least talked about. Happy to finally see someone making a proper reteospective
I absolutely love this series and cannot wait for you to finish the prequel trilogy. And having watched all of them I will watch all of them again when you upload them as one video. which would be amazing.
I love games like this that expand the movies. The Empires Revenge mission on Yavin is a favorite. If we take all of the Episode 2 games into account. The Battle of Geonosis was insane!
There's a Darth Maul short story about him taking over the Droid squads draining the Gungan swamp. We see some of this in a Galactic Battlegrounds level.
Thanks bread circus, very cool.
I wish I played Battle for Naboo as a kid. I enjoyed Rogue Squadron and the logo scene feels familiar, so safe to say same devs.

Changing between boat to star fighter to speeder in one mission is awesome
I’m so glad you managed to save the World President.
These videos make me hope youll do an in depth dive into Star Wars: Empire at War.
God i borrowed this game from my library when i was like 6 or 7...i feel forgot completely about it until i saw the video title and it felt like i unlocked memories
1:02:41 Ah, but someone else DID! In "Star Wars: Starfighter", Rhys Dallows (Bravo 10) enters the port-side hanger to take on the mercenary who killed his mentor.
I am so glad someone else knew about this game! None of my friends played it.
What a time to be alive as a kid :)
I LOOOOOVED this game ❤ Still have the disk. Wish I could play it again
Haven't played this game in over 20 years, but I remember playing the heck out of it when it came out. Flood of memories coming back when I watch this level by level.
This game consumed the Summer of 2001 for me. It's probably the last N64 game I played.
Gavyn Sykes, AKA Chris Simpson who now has an awesome CZcams channel called “Retro Recipes”. Think he may even have mentioned being in Star Wars once or twice. 😉
36:09 Fun fact: There's actually two Flash Speeders trapped behind that tower that join the convoy if you destroy the tower.
2:13 Daggerfall! Never played the game but im mostly sure that is Daggerfall. I finished Skyrim and Oblivion and I'm playing Morrowind right now.
I commented about this game in a previous episode, I know you probably already had this planned but I’d like to pretend I helped 😂
To be fair, we probably didn't have it planned at all. It was very last minute. I think we seriously talked about doing it for the first time after episode 11 was written. So, it's likely you did factor in my decision to raise the idea of a BFN episode during one of our pitch sessions. It was a couple of people that mentioned Battle For Naboo and one person who mentioned Gavyn Sykes that put the idea in my head. -ED-1TA
@@thebreadcircus awesome! Seriously looking forward to it. Have you ever touched on Star Wars: Starfighter??
@@thebreadcircus Gungan frontier next!
@@thebreadcircusyou mean to say it was ‘briefly’ considered?…
The way I remember it, we'd talked about doing an episode on Battle for Naboo. This had been quite early on, around the range of part 4-6 in our series. At the time I was doubtful, and as we got close I even considered suggesting we veto the BfN episode. Then I played the game, and my mind was instantly changed. It's an impressive game, I can see why it still has so many loyal fans.
As for the N-1 Starfighter game, I played that for the first time a year ago. I'd just fallen in love with the podracer game, so I was looking forward to Starfighter. At the time, I didn't get the hang of the controls or even finish the tutorial level. Steam says I've spent only 12 minutes in the game. One day I'll give it a proper attempt: I can't remember if I tried using a controller, or mouse and keyboard. I'm also interested in the game Jedi Starfighter, which I assume is related. -DZ
I played this game almost as much as the first Rogue Squadron, which is a lot! Love this game, getting to play with ground vehicles was a huge deal to me as a kid. I wanted a gunboat toy so bad. Cheers for the trip down memory lane! Unfortunately it is now back to waiting for this game to show up on Steam so I can play it again.
Great review
I love all those star wars n64 and game cube games.
Interesting choice to review this game before Rogue Squadron, but it totally makes sense after reviewing episode 1
What a coincidence. I searched for an in depth review of this game like 2 weeks ago, looking for something that wasn't a decade ago with a crappy microphone. Thanks for this!
Really solid in-depth analysis! I just found your channel by chance while looking up Battle For Naboo. Do you have any plans to do this type of deep-dive for other Star Wars vehicle combat games (such as The Clone Wars from 2002/2003)?
You guys should cover the Dark Forces / Jedi Knight games some day, especially Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. Academy is probably my favorite old Star Wars game. Used to play that so much as a teen. RIP Kyle Katarn and Jaden Kor. Killed in the Disney Purge.
Before you posted this video I was watching gameplay of Battle for Naboo. A nice coincidence. Your channel is a great place for interesting Star Wars content.
I did see TPM in theaters like every other young boy my age but I don't remember the experience. I do remember playing the hell out of this when it came out.
I have a love for the Naboo Bomber from this game.
Oddly enough this game is that particular version of the bomber's only appearance there's a different version from an RTS that had supplanted it.
This was a great video, I really enjoyed it. I hope we'll get a retrospective on Starfighter next, you know, tackled the other half of Naboo's resistance that had been explored in the short time between the releases of Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.
As a kid, and as a non native english speaker, the first few attemps at the last mission I kept trying to enter the Trade Federation ship like little Anakin Skywalker, just to keep exploding time and time again xD.
I really like your detailed, linear, and referential approach to videogame analysis. Plus, it's nice to watch a review that isn't laced with negativity (which, while it does have appeal, does get tiresome and seems less academically-minded). I hope you do more videogame analyses!
@27:55 The Trade Federation did deploy a submarine type known as the "Trade Federation U-boat" during the campaign in 'Jedi Starfighter' which takes place after The Battle of Naboo.
I really wish this game would get remastered or ported to modern consoles, as well as the Rogue Squadron games
1:03:11 But that shield generator/sensor dome was only blown up AFTER the shields were first battered down, at best the blast only *Kept* the shield down.
All I can think watching Ahsoka e3 is I hope this channel makes an episode about the turbo lasers on that big ring leaving so much smoke after presumably hitting the deflector shields of Ahsoka’s ship
Would love to see one of these for Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy someday.
This was great! Too bad I never played this one as a youngin, I'm excited for the gamecube clone wars game, I played that one a lot
X )
Intro music?? Incredible video btw I’ve watched this like 3 times. Excellent coverage
Thank you! That song is Alla Pugacheva - Arlekino (Geoffrey Day Remix). -DZ
2:10 it's a funny detail of the Rogue Squadron games, considering that this engine already supports doing camera-facing sprites like DOOM.
I was very disappointed with lack of tie-in games to release with the ST. Very sorry for the kids growing up with them. I got all these cool tie-in games with extra cool stories and they get Battlefront 2 and a Lego game lol
Nostalgic. Thoughts on the sith infiltrator that can be unlocked?
I spent my hours playing this on a Windows 95 pc with an analog flight controller, IMO great way to play the game.
Never knew about the swamp speeder, thanks for that. Someone else mentioned the Sith ship (Darth Maul's?) I feel like I remember that one but it may have been from Starfighter instead??
It would be great to try that out, though there isn't a proper joystick in the house. I played through using an Xbox controller, which I've loved since we soldered together an adapter for the 360 (which is basically identical to the later Xbone and Excess). The first game I'd try a joystick on, though, would probably be Elite Dangerous: the controller feels a bit limiting there.
Right you are, this game does include Darth Maul's ship. Now that you mention it, the Sith Infiltrator is the only vehicle in the game I didn't cover. Of the three bonus missions, one has you shooting it down, and another lets you fly it against Naboo forces. If this video had been a dedicated review of the game, I would've included the secret missions and Maul's ship.
However, this was made as part of our TPM project. It was getting quite long, and those (non-canon?) missions would've been a distraction from the movie itself. For similar reasons, our video on the SWE1 Racer game only covered the movie podracers, not the ones exclusive to the game. It's not ideal, I do like completeness for its own sake, but I think the result is better this way. -DZ
51:08 that IS how it's pronounced, its from the word tantivy meaning a rapid gallop or ride
You missed out on the bonus levels of the game. They are so good.
Used to split time between Battle For Naboo, Ocarina of Time, and the Turok games. Good memories.
I'd love for a look at The Phantom Menace movie tie-in game. I love this deep dive long form nostalgia autopsy.
From an old book I recall, most shields act like a constantly replenishing atmosphere so long as the machinery can take the strain, shield generators can breakdown as a result of the simple intensity of energy going through it. It's not so much many layers as a sort of gradient field that's being weakened over time in specific areas or given more energy and redoubled in a specific quadrant. The closer you are to the source the more intense the shield, thus why shield generators on Imperial designs are largely located around the rear third in order to protect the vital components such as bridge, generator, engines, and majority of the weapon batteries. I do not recall the direct source unfortunately as this was well over 10 years ago. To show a design standard that explains this distinction Imperial designs usually have a large capacity but once they go down they're typically a lot less effective at protecting themselves being isolated systems than Alliance designs. IIRC Mon Cals are designed with the generators inside the hull, less vulnerable and easier to repair but somewhat less effective or efficient at defending the ship directly from burst damage as the method of keeping these shields up is directly replacing parts on the shield generator under strain while they're online as compared to an Imperial bridge generator which has a more brute force solution able to take more burst fire but less sustainable due to being difficult to reach for repairs to my understanding, focused primarily on surviving long enough to throw its full turbolaser array at a target until it ceases to exist.
Then there's also of course the difference of particle and deflector shields, and that particle shields have to be deactivated to launch ships, particle weapons, or other such elements which could imply the SSD had TIEs within its bridge deflector area when the A-Wings hit it or perhaps was launching concussion missiles or other such weapons. Seems odd but it's not entirely without possibility.
Ah. The thirteenth hour of the phantom menace analysis.
If you're doing this, with the accompanied movie... Star Wars Starfighter/Jedi Starfighter next?
I remember it took me 30 minutes to complete the last mission because I didn't know where to shoot, but then I got gold medal
A nice game actually, which I played alot my self back in the day. I really don't see how anyone would find it enjoyable in this day and age tho ^,^
Holy crap I loved this game when I was a kid… I wonder if there’s a way I could emulate it
i hope you do videos on more star wars episode 1 era games
Looks and sounds like a rogue spuadron spinoff
1:02:45 and Starfighter will show that he was not listened to because someone else does indeed try that stunt!
Hey would you be interested in doing a video about all the mistakes and things that dont make sense in the star wars pod racer scene? I have loads of information for you to do a full video about it. things like placements not making sense to size inconsistencies to pods appearing after being destroyed to facing the wrong direction on the grid. let me know! I always wanted to do it but I suck at talking so im happy to tell you everything iv uncovered.
No one talks about battle for Naboo and it makes me sad because their is a lot of cool crafts in that game like the only boat I’ve ever seen used in a game and the police cruiser
51:06 wasn’t the first pronunciation of “Tantive” in the 1981 radio drama, and similar to (or possibly a misspelling of) “tantivy,” meaning “gallop” or “swift” (a fitting name).
Still not as bad as “Coruscant,” another real word (“glittering”) that has been mispronounced since The Phantom Menace. It’s jarringly different in the “Star Wars: TIE Fighter” briefings.
Kashyyyk also had a long history of having way to many different pronunciations, from Cash-ick to kah-sheak, and probably a few more I'm forgetting.
wonder if there will be something like this for star wars starfighter, it was also set during the phantom menace.
I dont seem to be able to access your discord, and your twitter has not updated in a while. Are you guys still in business?
I'm not sure why you can't access our Discord. Try adding me as a friend (shamhatwitch) and I'll invite you to the server. We're still in business. Just assembly the 12 hour TPM compilation, which is a tedious process. -ED-1TA
I swear the game's voiceover guy sounds like Giancarlo Esposito
So this game is also on PC? I've checked the GOG store right away but they never released it there. :/
Another game i'm missing is the Episode 1 tie in game and i'm sure there are a bunch of other Star Wars which were never re-released.
You're going to have to download ROMs and emulators to get the best experience, most likely. To the extent a lot of these games exist on Windows, the are either hard to obtain or hard to make work (without a significant amount of messing around). I think the tie-in game might've been exclusive to the PSX. -ED-1TA
@@thebreadcircus No the tie in game was also on PC, I've still have it there on the shelve. lol But the problem is you can't play it on modern Windows and having these games on GOG is just a very convinient way to play them without having to mess with Virtual Mashines. I've played it a bit on an PS1 emulator, but it just isn't really the same.
Various earth conditions? I thought they were on Naboo 😅
(💭great this guy is one of those that makes a dumb accurate point💭)
Earth is correct: so far, that's the only world we've designed boats for. There are slight differences in the way a ship might be designed, depending if it's meant for the Pacific or Atlantic oceans. Building a hull for the Mediterranean or Arctic gives even more reason to tweak the variables, such as changing the keel depth or creating an icebreaker. The water will be a different temperature, the wind and waves behave differently, even the amount of salt can vary.
The point is, even on Earth a boat design needs a thousand conditions to be factored in. When you bring a watercraft down from orbit, it isn't necessarily seaworthy. In the case of the Trade Federation, they probably designed their gunboats to be generic, to work on a wide range of planets or moons. To handle an ocean of heavy water, with lithium chloride dissolved in the brine instead of salt, and to deal with different gravity. But as it happens, we know for certain the TF gunboat was made for use on Naboo. -DZ
I wonder if despite the general differences in appearance the bombers from Battle for Naboo and Starfighter/Jedi Starfigher are meant to be the same model what do you think?
I've never actually played Starfighter or Jedi Starfighter, at least not yet. I got a copy at the same time as SWE1 Racer, and found the podracer controls much easier to pick up. Do you mean the Naboo bomber based on the N-1, or the Trade Federation one? -DZ
@@thebreadcircus Trade Fed bomber in Starfighter's got a split prong instead of this game's three-pod design, also feels a good bit slower but tougher by far.
Im pretty sure my texture pack for battlefront 2 turns the cis strike bomber into a vulture bomber.
Man I remember this game the trade federation gunboats controls were TERRIBLE
I believe you should have shown the three bonus missions that are unlocked via the medals you earn.
In principle, I do agree with you. If this video had been a dedicated stand-alone review of the game, I would've included the secret missions and Maul's ship.

That's Alla Pugacheva's Arlekino, as remixed by Geoffrey Day. Cheers. -ED-1TA
Why didn’t the smuggler just raise its altitude or at the very minimum move away? You could say all the power was routed to the shields but really if they were moving then they’d be a harder target to hit. Seems very plot essential with no real purpose besides connecting the characters story wise
On a side note If I don’t hit the notification bell then I most likely will forget you exist for a while (even though I am definitely subscribed) and that sounds like a bad thing, however when I finally remember there’s a much better chance of you have releasing several videos
