Honestly considered him part of the main cast in my mind. SO influential in the story, but if i think back on it.... he did note appear every episode. So he truely made his mark as an actor

For a while I kept thinking of his character in Hellraiser. So it took me a while to get used to him being another character.

In the pale moonlight is the finest episode of star trek ever created. That's all thanks to how Mr Robinson treated and created his character and played off the other actors. My thanks to him and this channel for bringing it to a wider audience.
That episode is tied with Far Beyond the Stars for my absolute favorite DS9 episode.
"That's why you came to me, isn't it Captain? Because you knew I could do those things that you weren't capable of doing". It's a brilliant, and perhaps needed, response to Gene Rodenberry's unbending insistence on blanket idealism when it came to the portrayal of Starfleet officers.
Maybe the best DS9 episode but not the best episode overall that would be a tough call
I just watched it last night, damn Sisko went dirty!! xD and I'd do it all over again!
Staggeringly great acting from both Avery and Andrew, in the pale moonlight may be the best "dark" trek that has ever been done.
📌Garak's first appearance with Bashir is ingrained in my mind. That dialogue is just perfectly written and the acting really brought the script to life.
It's so weird to think of Mr Robinson as a recurring guest star on DS9. His character is so great, such an important part of that show I've always thought of him as a main cast member. One of the few actors who plays an alien in a truly non-human way. Wonderful, wonderful actor.

It's great how well Trek actors are ageing. Andrew Robinson is 81 but could easily pass as a 70 year old with how sharp and spritely he is.
To be fair, he is Garak.
If I was just listening to him, I would think he was in his forties. Sharp as a tack.
Andrew (Garak) deserved much more Screen-time in DS9 and or subsequent spin-off shows, simply an iconic character and gentleman.
I would have loved to have seen more of Garek on screen. With that said though, I think he had the perfect amount of screen time. I think of it like the Borg on TNG, it was a real treat when they appeared simply because they didn't appear a lot and they were largely a mystery, it's the same with Garek. When Voyager came along the Borg appeared way more often and lost that mystery and almost became an enemy of the week.
I concur; I would also hasten to add that of the supporting characters added over the seasons of DS9 the only one I wanted more story for than Garak was Vic Fontaine. Garak had much more of an ongoing arc, though, and it would have been fun to let Vic Fontaine be a part of that (as opposed to Julian or Ezri Dax).
Andrew Robinson made Garak one of the best Star trek characters.

Isn't it just, tho'? The Hollywood writers have been either pre-emptively programming us, or trying to subtly warn us, for decades. They know.
It was said that the Order was so efficient that a Cardassian citizen couldn't sit down to a meal without each dish being duly noted and recorded by the Order.
Garak is easily among the best of all Star Trek characters; DS9 was so much the better for having Andrew Robinson in that role.

I was fortunate enough to be a stage hand/security/ prop man at a 2002 Trek convention in Philly. It was a DS9 mecca. Sid and Andy had a dinner theater show called "The Dream Box", that let Bashir and Garak meet and interact. Setting up the sound and lighting during rehearsal, I watched Sid show Andy how to work my medical tricorder. Best.moment. ever.
Andrew Robinson is one of the best parts about DS9. I wish I could sit down and have a proper chat with Andrew about his character, as I am an academic and write on Dandies, which Garak absolutely is. Andy is amazing, I'm sure I'll enjoy the video.

Andrew was so down-to-earth and fun to listen to. Besides his so broad and versatile talents as an actor and director, meeting him in person will only excite you more with his kindness and modestly. Having met him at Conventions and on set - he never loses his humanity. Thank you Andrew for all your work and kindness. Thanks Connor and Dominick- I just wish these shows were 90 minutes to an hour! Bravo gentlemen!
Thank you for this! As for 90-mins to an hour- each episode here is basically an hour, usually a little more. Longer versions… typically hour and a half to two hours are available to our Patreon members. To this day I still think that Andrew Robinson is one of the screen's greatest villains from his role in Dirty Harry.

Garak. Kira. Dukat. Weyoun. Any time any of them appear on screen, I am riveted by every moment of their performances. The best of the best.
Miles. Quark. Odo. Damar. I’ll add in Sisko as well, whose acting style had to grow on me. Even my “second favorite” group of characters brings so much life to these roles with their share of unforgettable performances.
Bashir. Kassidy. Jake. Nog. The “late bloomers” IMO, who took a while for their characters (and in some cases, performances) to shine. Once they did, they were among the best.
What an unbelievable amount of talent there was on Deep Space Nine.
Only a few actors who weren't actually credited as regulars on Star Trek stand out in the memory of fandom and sci-fi history generally more than the main casts. Garak is often regarded as one of the greatest characters in all of Star Trek. So complex, so deep, so interesting. And then amazing Andy Robinson wrote one of the best Star Trek novels too. This interview is just lovely to have. What a fantastically interesting guy. Thanks for this!
I was just a kid when my dad, who loved Clint Eastwood movies took us to see Dirty Harry. Andrew Robinson’s role was so convincing that every time I seen him in order roles, he was always the bad guy. As a kid you don’t always separate the actor from the character but on DS9, he had the makeup to literally mask the actor and made Garak more of a mystery to me. Great interviews and guests, thanks!
Many forget or don't know that he was the villain in Dirty Harry. I think this man nailed it in his role on DS9.
Oh yeah, I see it now… It’s the eyes… He indeed played the DH villain.
He was also in Stallone's Cobra action movie in 86. He was a tv reporter I think.

Mr Robinson stood out to this big Star Trek fan as a great character in the Deep Space show. I well remember him as well in his Dirty Harry movie, having seeing it in re-runs a few times. He played that "scumbag" character very realistically, not that I've ever known a bum like that. Hearing his story was very interesting. Also great to see the two regulars from my favorite version of Star Trek. With an asterisk, as I drank deep of the OG version for decades, starting with it as a very small kid. Carry on, gents. Doing great.
Just met him on the last Star Trek cruise. What an absolutely talented, humble, and gracious man. Sincerely hopes he comes back to play Garak.

Andrew Robinson is wonderful. Anti vietnamwar = good guy. So talented. That slightly arch voice of Garak as an oddity who is flirting with Bashir. This british fan salutes him. My clever daughter led me to DS9. I
First time I saw Andy Robinson was... "Dirty Harry". His performance as the nut job was so effective that I remember feeling really quite unsettled by the character; that scene on the school bus where he starts losing it at the kids during "Row Row Row Your Boat" springs to mind (I was a kid myself when I saw the film... Pre-Star Trek for me as well).
Of course he'll always be "plain and simple" Garak to me. He had so many memorable moments/lines/episodes on that show.
It's nice a fan asked Andrew Robinson about Hellraiser. That was the first time I had seen this actor on film.
Fantastic interview, thanks so much guys! It's awesome that Mr Robinson said he's claustrophic… just like Garak. You mentioned the possibility of getting him back? I really think you need to, as this interview seemed to be over so quickly, especially once you got to Star Trek. There's SO MUCH still to talk about, including the episodes of Star Trek he directed. Here are 10 questions I think NEED to be asked...
1. His favorite episodes to shoot?
2. His favorite other characters on the show?
3. How much rehearsal time did he get with the other cast?
4. Did he/does he ever watch the episodes back?
5. How did his relationships evolve with Sid, and the other cast and crew?
6. Did he eventually get used to the makeup?
7. Did he make any lasting friendships on the show? Does he keep in touch with anyone?
8. Did he ever improvise lines, or make choices that weren't in the script?
9. Did he ever mentor other actors during shooting?
10. Since he worked on both DS9 and Voyager, get him to talk about the differences.
In particular, I would really have liked to have heard Mr Robinson talk more about the storyline with his estranged father (Enabran Tain) which he seemed interested in talking about. As far as I'm concerned, this was really Garak's big story arc which ran deep through the heart of the character, so moving. Having now learned that Andrew lost his own father at a young age and came from a broken home, it would be interesting to know if he channeled his own heartache over his father into that story. I believe Paul Dooley is still with us - now what a reunion THAT would be!
I also really wanted to hear Erica's question, she started asking a question (1:03:25) then got cut off. That girl is so sweet and doesn't complain when she gets ignored! I would have liked to have seen Erica spending some time talking to Mr Robinson since they clearly had a connection and some common ground. Oh and the censoring in this is hilariously inconsistent - I think you censored about 1 out of every 5 f bombs!
Finally, guys, you HAVE to get Marc Alaimo on! :-) You could bring back Andrew, get him on with Marc, and have a special called "Keeping Up With The Cardassians". Together, these two Trek veterans have worked on TNG, DS9 and Voyager and I'd love to hear them bouncing off one another (and the two of you), talking about the difference between working on the different Trek shows.
Garak was the most enigmatic character ever in the Gene Roddenberry universe. Only can be brought to life by the legendary Andrew Robinson. Will never forget his character in Dirty Harry. Well done.

I remember when DS9 first aired, it took me ages to figure out where I knew Andrew Robinson from, and the light bulb moment "That's Scorpio from Dirty Harry!" Just from the voice.

What an amazing guy Andrew Robinson is. I did not know about who he auditioned for originally! Garak was MADE by him though. One of my most favorite characters on DS9 which itself was a watershed moment for Trek. Brilliant episode as always guys thank you. Much love from the UK ❤
I just discovered this. As someone from Manchester, NH, I was initially excited to hear a mention of my hometown, but I'm sorry to hear Andy had a rough time here! He definitely shouldn't have been kicked out for protesting, but it was a different era.
One of the amazing souls who disproves the universality of "Never meet your heroes", I encountered Mr. (and Mrs.) Robinson at a fan event, and he was fascinating company without needing to hold the floor. At the time, I was running a Star Trek RPG campaign, and when this came up, he suggested Garak as a beautifully unreliable witness for a court-martial that was happening in the story and insisted on signing the log in character. This included a period which he assured me was a microdot containing the actual facts of the case. 😂
Such a fun and interesting interview. Garak is one of the best characters in Star Trek and Andrew played him so brilliantly. DS9 was so good for its non-human characters and at the top are Garak, Quark, and Jeffery Combs' entire ensemble, which obviously carried over to Enterprise. I don't care what anyone says, Enterprise was Grade A Prime Trek. And another great Jeffery Combs major recurring character just added to that.
Bravo, gentlemen.

Fantastic. I've seen Andrew Robinson on convention stages for almost thirty years and have been lucky enough to talk with him, and this interview captures what's so great about him and why the fans love him.
One of my favorite characters in Star Trek. I teach part-time in a juvenile prison, and my favorite episode "In the pale moonlight" is one of those episodes I always show to students and it has a lot of teaching metaphors for them to use and chew on. Ultimately, for students, it's about how their moral compass is kinda wavy when in times of wars. Thanks for having and doing this episode. A great episode with a great actor.

I was like lucky enough years ago to meet Andrew at London Film and Comic-Con. I didn’t realise he was there until I heard his voice quoting Garak. I got a signed photo and spent a good 10 minutes talking to him and the best part he was genuine. He is the real deal. I really hope Andrew returns to London one year.
Love you, Andrew! Garak was a fantastic character who might have never amounted to anything with a different actor. You were so, so good in the role.

There are no words to describe how amazing his performance in DS9 was....he totally lifted the episodes he was in (he should have been in a lot more)....one of the best performances I have ever seen in my life....
Excellent Andy and Armin Shimerman were IMHO the best Two actors in DS9, could Armin possibly be next on the shuttlepod show !
Because Quark did the things that he did when he did why he did where he did how he did- added Dimension to all the other characters. It seems that throughout the course of the show everybody was getting mad at him. This component of the show represented about 80% of the humor. Mr Shimmerman's role was probably the most important on DS9.
Got your wish, his episode is amazing and a bumper one at 2 hours.
I really really hope Connor gets a 4 part episode talking about himself in the same way Dominic did. Cos when he does manage to get a word in, he is actually quite insightful.

@@bencodykirk Slightly yes, he keeps cutting the speaker story sometimes. But it also seems that Connor doesn't feel the need to go on and on. I think this episode Connor has spoken a bit more then usual. So as i said, i hope Connor gets a 4 part episode as well, because it would be nice to hear his stories as well.

Garak is by far my favorite DS9 character and quite possibly my favorite ST character. He stole the show in every single scene he was in. Thank the deities that you brought him in. His delivery, his mannerisms, the way he played off of Dukat and Worf... I could go on and on but I will just say LLAP Andrew, you magnificent bastard.

The best yet, by such a long way. Your other guests have been amazing but they stand no chance next to this guy. Garak was a perfect character, I think DS9 is my favourite show. It did take a while to find its feet but that's true for so many things in life.... given time ... Enterprise would have also been just another perfect series. It's amazing how much Andrew sounds like Alan Alda in this pod cast; I have such respect for them both for their acting abilities.

Love this. So many of these Star Trek podcasts I didn’t know about like The Delta Flyers. A lot to catch up on.
Garak one of my absolutely favorite Star Trek characters. Andrew did such an awesome job.
I found "Liberace" on CZcams and Andy Robinson did a phenomenal job. Unfortunately, the upload was so lo-res I couldn't watch it for very long, but I read the comments and everybody was blown away by his performance (a lot of them had seen it on TV in 1988). The majority of them were die-hard Liberace fans. Many of them didn't know him from DS9. Some of them referred to him as "the actor who played Liberace in this," but-again-whether or not they were familiar with his other work, the consensus was he's a brilliant actor. I didn't get to hear him sing much since it wasn't in the first 10 minutes, but based on the taste of "I'll Be Seeing You" he gave us in this interview, he should join one of the many Star Trek alum bands.

Andrew might be the best actor all series combined in all of Trek of all time and one of the best actors out there. His body of work will last a lifetime. I never get tired of watching all his episodes even if he had a minor roll. Garak is because of Andrew the best character ever portrayed! Thank you Andrew! 🙏

Took me 40 years to realize that Andrew Robinson, the Cardassian was Scorpio in Dirty Harry. I was shocked. Dirty Harry was one of my favorite films as a kiddo. Andrew knocked it out of the park

Garak is one of my absolute favorite trek characters. Andrew, you played this character absolutely brilliantly, and without you, DS9 would not have been nearly as great of a series as it was! You were the PERFECT man for that role.
As a Star Trek fan since the original series, I can honestly say that Garak is the best secondary character ever created beyond the main cast. DS9 was brilliantly written but it is Andrew Robinson’s portrayal that cements Garak’s legacy in Star Trek. Kudos to the Shuttlepod show for bringing a new perspective to Star Trek fans!

Andrew Robinson is a treasure. The Garak episodes are my favorites of DS 9.
Also I can empathize with Mr. Robinson. My father also served in Europe in WWII. He was in Paton’s 3rd Army. He was there when Paton turned his whole army north to The Bulge. Paton had this ingenious idea of having infinity squads ride the tanks rather than march or ride in the trucks. This helped him move fast but it was not the safest place for infantry. The men were taught when the gunner said preparing to fire, to cover their ears and open their mouths very wide. He was doing this when a German popped up and fired an antitank grenade. The grenade went into his mouth, knocked all the teeth out of the right side of his mouth and lodged in his cheek. Of course the impact knocked him ass over elbows off the tank. Somehow the grenade did not explode and the impact with the ground only injured him. He spent 6 months in hospitals recovering. First I’m Eindhoven, then England, then finally in the US. This is what my great aunt told me but the proof went up on flames when the Leavenworth records center burned down. My service records were lost too. So having had to deal with that existential crisis, I am nothing but empathic to the children of the heroes of WWII who lost a parent there. You are a worthy son of that man, the way you lived your life.
It is so, so interesting to learn more and more about the person behind beloved characters. Garak was already one of my favourites in all of Star Trek, and now I also like the person behind the mask. Truly a privilege to see him in the pod and not to mention it's awesome to hear him swear 😁
The " Taraq Nor " episode was a tour de force of his abilities as an actor
I think you're thinking of "Empok Nor" but yes... that episode really showcases his range.
I think it is great that so many people have found out how good DS9 is and always was.
No other actor could play him as mr Andrew did. And i thoroughly enjoyed his portrayal of Garak.
How i remeber Garak is like this. He starts off as an Cardassian that just is there. After a few episodes he start to iritate the crew, no sabotage or something like that. Then little glimps off him being a disfraced spy emerge. A lovely dance of wits and dubble meaning betweem him and Bashir starts, that lasted till the war against cardassia kind of started. Yes he was a spy or assassins. But ALWAYS did his actions with love for his nation. He sees his nation go down in madness and his hart breaks. Nowhere to go but the federation. He betrays his people to save them. A tragic hero. My god i wish we could see more of him.

I really like this podcast. I like the background, not only "how did you feel while playing your role", but everything around it. The pacing, the fact that former cast is hosting, and that they did not watch all of their guest's episodes. An interview between equals.

Garak is absolutely one of my favorite characters in all of Star Trek. He should have been considered a regular because he was on so often. I hope Garak finds his way into some future project.

In the Pale Moonlight is the greatest episode of ANY Star Trek series, period.
I loved Garak, but I also loved him as Scorpio in Dirty Harry. Charley Varrick is a terrific underrated flick as well.
Only 20 minutes in, and am absolutely loving the interview. DS9 is "My Trek" even thought I started watching when TOS was in syndication in the 1970's. Sisko is "My Captain". Loved the character of Garak. After this interview, I will now find a convention he is appearing at just to hear him talk.
Andrew Robinson...what a guy! Really interesting episode, made me love the guy even more!
Gotta say - Andrew was absolutely bloody terrifying in Dirty Harry. When you're new on the acting scene, and you play something that convincingly, I wonder if it's hard for people to conceive that you might just be acting well, and instead they assume you're a bit like that character in real life. And maybe that's why he couldn't get a part for a while after that. I must admit, when I saw him later in other roles, like Liberace and in Star Trek, I was surprised how different he was to that character.
This was a fantastic episode. It was nice to hear a little more from Connor on this installment as well. Andrew is one of the best actors that the Trek franchise has had the fortune of having and DS9 really just had an amazing supporting cast. You know if Garak was in the scene that it was going to be a good one, especially if he got to play off Sid, Rene, Avery or Armin. Shuttlepod is really coming into its own - and I eagerly await the next installment.

What I loved most about Garak was that while we were all trying to figure him out, he seemed to know all the other characters better than they knew themselves, and was always forcing them to develop, for better or worse (if there is such a thing). Bashir obviously. But also Sisko with In the Pale Moonlight, Ezri trying to counsel him and getting shredded, forcing Worf to stop him from scorching the founders' world, Nog when captured by the Jem'hadar, O'Brian had to outsmart him on Empok Nor, Odo when dealing with Tain, Kira when dealing with Damar and his crew in the final arch. I'm sure there are more. I don't know how much of this was the Andrew Robinson or the writers... but I don't think any of the main characters would have been fleshed out as well as they were without Garak. Arguably the MVP of the show ❤

First I saw Andrew was as Frank in Hellraiser and Hellraiser II. I didn't realise Garak was same actor at first until I started thinking, I know that voice. Garak is one of the best characters in Trek, someone who you want to like but be never piss him off. The Garak and Bashir duo is one of Trek's best and always knew the episode was going to be good with those in the mains story line.
Wonderful frigging episode. I have been listening to the review of the first Star Trek pilot and I have some issues with the discussion (need to go back and listen again - I remember how it was during that time no good adult sci-fi on TV and then Star Trek.) But listening to this episode I have to say you both foster such phenomenal conversations - like you did with Walter Koenig. Until listening to this episode I’d never made the connection between Dirty Harry and Garak - and wow - can’t believe I missed that. I think it is a testament to an actor who embodies a role so well that one doesn’t easily connect that to other roles! Anyway keep doing what y’all are doing! Thank you!
