  • It's the fourth episode of our second season. Host Dominic Keating is home healing from injury. As such, Connor and Erica are joined by guest host, Producer Mark, to shoot the breeze with an actor we all watched grow up on Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Cirroc Lofton, beloved for his role as Jake Sisko, son of Captain Sisko. "The kid from DS9" is all grown up and has a lot of terrific stories to tell. They discuss Cirroc's life, his first experiences as a child actor, his thoughts on growing up on Trek, and more. Trek conventions. Trek convention body guards. Launching a restaurant. Hosting his very successful podcast The 7th Rule, which he started with Deep Space Nine bestie, and real life great guy, the late Aron Eisenberg (Nog from DS9). Erica gets some fan questions in, we play Trek Trivia, and more. It's another conversation episode, this time with a real cool cat who happened to grow up a block from where we sat to talk.

I didn't really sit down and "watch" DS9 until much later, and it soon became my favorite series to watch to this day. Cirroc and I are basically the same age, I'm one year older. My father withdrew from my life at an early age and the watching the father/son relationship between Cirroc and Avery really gave me a good example of the kind of relationship I have with my own kids... firm but loving in the right way. And I'm happy that that relationship transcended the screen as well.

Connor, Erica and Mark - congrats on another exciting episode! Cirroc was a fantastic guest, such a warm and humble person. His experiences as a child actor and his stance on how the industry has treated them was super insightful, extremely well spoken. Hearing the positive experience Avery had and continues to have on his life was immensely sweet, their real life love for eachother really shone through in their performances on DS9. I think my favourite aspect about this weeks episode is how Cirroc was just as curious and engaged in asking questions as our hosts were! His back and forth with Connor was alot of fun to see. I'm deeply excited for next weeks episode! Wishing Dom a speedy but gentle recovery, we'll be waiting patiently for his return. 🩹❤‍🩹 Happy Shuttlepod Sunday, one and all! 💚🍃🖖

I teach in a juvenile prison and for many of the minority students of mines, this was the first time they've actually seen a positive male role model that was a minority. Most of their role models they've seen were either gangsters, drug dealers, pimps, gangster rap stars, etc, etc.
Sisko was the first time for them seeing a bonafide positive male role model. I tried to do " The Cosby Show" but it didn't really click to them. DS9 CLICKED for them. Thanks for doing the show and sharing your experience.

I just did a rewatch, and not only did it confirm that DS9 is the best Trek, best crew, best cast, AND best captain, but I was reminded of the beautiful relationship between Benjamin and Jake. He hugged and kissed Jake all the time and told his son that he loved him. It was a very physical manifestation of a father's love for his son...it was a tangible thing you could feel through the screen. He allowed Jake to just be himself and never forced him to be something other than who he was.

Thank you for this. My favorite thing about DS9 is the father-son relationship of Ben and Jake. No other Star Trek show has something like this. This was its heart. People play at being families in shows but the affection between Avery and Cirroc was clearly sincere beyond the screen, and heartwarming. My only complaint is that Jake should have been there with Cassidy in saying goodbye to Ben after the wormhole aliens rescue him. I feel Ben would have insisted upon it. Blood is blood. But it’s a small thing in the greater whole.

The portrait of Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko very much catches his essence. Wonderful exchange with Mr. Lofton. I've been rewatching DS9, and wondering what happened to him. Apparently, he's been hanging out with Robert De Niro, which is amazing. I agree whole heartedly with Cirroc's comments about child actors needing support down the road and hope that happens. I didn't watch it when it aired (all my fault), but have since watched it and LOVED it. The crew of DS9 seem to have become great friends for life.

@@tilt0matic2 - One that I hold really dear is on the first actually novel of Star Trek: Enterprise The Good That Men Do (which is #11, but first NEW story that disregards the LAST episode of ENT) by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin. He is has a prominent POV character.
I don't want to give too much away about how and why, but it is unexpected, but then works so well with his character on DS9. You have to check it out.

We all STILL hope that they'd give us as much of the crew...in a twenty years later type show for this storyline and for the actor's themselves. BUT, you never know if/when that come together.
      We love the entire cast.
Keep in touch. Would love to hear your thoughts of Season 3 and 4...especially the last episode. BUT, also knowing that the novels keep going.

I'm really never going to come to terms with how many of you collectively had not watched Trek!
A good part of how Sisco became my favorite captain was getting to see him in more dimensions, father, friend, warrior, and husband and while its hard to be "the kid" in that kinda shadow, you certainly beat Will/Wesley.
Many of us also mourn the loss of Aaron, watching you two grow up on the show as Nog and Jake has so many of us so sad at his absence in our world now.
I for one would love to follow the Jake Sisco the writer in his future endeavors.

While my introduction to Star Trek fandom, although a fan since the 1960s, was Wills The Ready Room, my introduction to CZcams and podcast Trek shows was the Seventh Rule. I really liked Cirroc’s comment about how the industry works with kids. There are just so many stories of how it can go wrong, and I am sure it is worse for bipoc child actors as well.
Mr. Lofton’s idea of the drugs at Quarks bar - oh my god - what a good idea. Yes, it is similar to the Next Generation episode - perhaps - but I think that was a missed opportunity to reflect on our society.
I am looking forward to the 7th Rule’s viewing of Next Gen with Denise Crosby. I’m also looking forward to your episode with her - making my way there. Missed Dominic of course - loved Cirrocs shout out!
Thanks again for a great conversation.

Avery Brooks left such a large impression on him, Cirroc's intellectual pauses look like The Sisko's

Omg, I just got to the convention story part and last time (listening to these out of order), with Nicole, Connor was going after baristas. This episode, he's going after convention security folk! The slander! The outrageous slander~~
    😂

I was surprised that no one brought up the DS9 episode "The Visitor." It's a fabulous show about the timeless bond between a father and son. It brings tears to my eyes whenever I watch it.

Man Cirroc looks so different now. I would never have recognized him if he wasn't name dropped.
    Another great episode!
Cirroc is a lot more down to Earth then I expected.
I was expecting something like Avery Brooks who comes of we boarder line insane in interviews.
P.s. what happened to Dominic? Did he get hurt doing something?

Scarface! 💀💀💀 I never laughed so hard in my life! So after the show I looked into it. A few years ago, in an interview, Pacino denied the substance in Scarface was actually drugs. He did add that whatever it was made problems for his nose. Not just through the shooting, but still today.
