Sam Harris on "The Portal" with host Eric Weinstein, Ep.

- On this episode of The Portal, Eric talks to close friend, neuroscientist, philosopher, author and meditation-guru, Sam Harris. When Sam and Eric sit down they generally agree about a large number of things. So in this experiment of a session, Eric attempts to push the relentlessly reasonable and methodical Sam out of his comfort zone to highlight their genuine differences. These include: beliefs on religion, the logic of voting for unreasonable candidates, Jeffrey Epstein's demise, the competence of the press, the ethics of immigration and more.
Note: This Episode was originally made possible by The Portal's returning sponsors.

I have just discovered Eric Weinstein, watching an episode of Joe Rogan.
Weinstein is a brilliant man, critical thinker, and courageous as hell to call out the establishment the way his does.
I'm sure he infuriates many but what Eric says, at its very essence, is what went wrong with the modern world and a scary prognosis of where we are going.
Mostly I think his assertions about "what went wrong with our country" is nonsense. I also dont find it particularly courageous, considering there are millions who say the same thing.
@@SolidSiren
Ok, you are correct and I change my mind.
Eric Wienstein's arguements and beliefs are "nonsense" and millions of people say the same thing.
I guess I will start watching CNC like you and believe in the establishment.

Loving this guy, Eric. He goes on offense in a way that doesn't cause prickliness or meanness. Such a special gem.
Most people seem to get caught up in being offensive for the sake of it and forget that it is an avenue to solve problems. Both Sam and Eric are great 'cause they know how to stay focused and on track and not get lost in arguments.
If you like, Sam has lots of great podcast episodes and talks on youtube. It is quite the hallmark of Sam's style that he is able to have tough but calm/amiable conversations.
@@howardhavardramberg7160 I dunno. Sam gets off into the weeds a lot on some tangent he just cannot let go of. To such an extent he has to talk about how dishonest he thought his guest was, in a later podcast.
@@codediporpal that's pretty rare that he does that, like a very small percentage of the time. They get outsized coverage for obvious reasons....Ezra Klein, Ben Affleck, etc get the most attention. Sam Harris is one of my Hallmark idols. Great philosopher, great writer, great atheist/secular spokesman. All with an interesting background in meditation making his ideas particularly distinct from others.

I can't recall ever hearing him rise beyond a brief smirk/'hmmm' about anything.
Every time I feel close to understanding Eric's stance on immigration and H1B visas, he switches topics. I feel like he has a shorthand with a lot of his guests that we're not privy to and he feels like he doesn't need to expand on his thoughts because he's discussed it in depth with his guests over cocktails already, but I'd love to hear him lay out his case to someone (the audience) who may not already be familiar with his positions.
I rather got the feeling that he would have loved to dig deeper but sam wouldn't let him for he had to blurt out every counter-thought or association that sprang to his mind.
Lloyd2112DT its actually one of the only things I really dislike about Eric. I think he’s a really bright guy and has interesting opinions but I think there is a serious downside to speaking with this much analogy and metaphor in your dialogue with someone.

This is the most sophisticated conversation about twitter beefs I've ever heard.
Hahah it might very well be. And in another arena of entertainment/informative things like this podcast, I say that the line from one of Dave Chappelle’s recent Netflix stand-up specials in which he referred to the exchange between (I don’t want to misspell his name) North Korea’s leader as “rap battles” mocking in particular the (although this particular line wasn’t said in one of his inane Twitter tweets, if I remember correctly) “Fire and fury” comment. It captured my thoughts that I would be quite furious if I - a 29 year old with my whole life and 4 Avatar sequels ahead of me - were to die in the Doomsday Machine (the term coined by, if memory serves, Steven Pinker, to refer to way to the way the nuclear powers of the world have their defensive and offensive systems set up in such a way that if a nuke goes off from any country to another, the before mentioned systems will essentially almost completely automatically start launching nukes in such force that it would be a extinction-level event that Pinker calls the “doomsday machine” that we have constructed) being activated because of Tweets between Donald Trump and North Korea’s leader. At least have it go down on Reddit, if it has to happen in such an awesomely stupid game of chicken Trump played with North Korea considering that they had just built a thermonuclear weapon - whilst until the moment that it was discovered they had it (a discovery that was made initially by Japanese seismologists , not any military or intelligence agency or private contractor that constitutes the U.S. and it’s allies massive apparatus that should’ve been able to detect it) - we treated the North Korean nuke development program as a joke (at least publicly) - and Trump continues to do so. Yet I digress for the rant.

Sam showed such courage to follow his logic regarding free will and he is a great inspiration and one of a dozen people that has caused me to sit up and smile for his intelligence....but ERIC WEINSTEIN is not afraid to seek the truth and when these intellects meet I am finding myself somewhat taking aback that Sam seems unable to adjust his beliefs in real time and take advantage of sitting with a teacher. I'd be honored to reach a level to be invited to this man's company. The things he doesn't know are the things I do not know and the things I have found he has found to an astonishingly more studied degree. I can't say enough about how in awe I am of his courage to see things for what they are, as free from bias as I have witnessed and without the need to delude. Eric, I just now discovered you, man. How have I just now? My goodness, I wish I had people to share this too that could understand you. I would love to witness conversations between these two (and others like them) breathe over the course of a few days. Let's expand on the long-form discussions even further. Just slap some microphones on these guys, set them up in a cabin for 3 days, get some cameras, supply them with the required nourishments, definitely some alcohol, and have some editors cut the downtime to reveal a growth of conversation we won't experience outside of our own personal experiences. Hearing these guys on the 'cutting in line' metaphor convinces me to trust them on an honest budget if they required viewer sponsorship to make this happen!
At first, I was upset that Sam wasn’t getting on the same level as Eric but, then it became clear that he is the perfect straight man to reflect society’s consumer mindset and facilitate Eric’s tries to flesh out boomers “globalization” psych job. And because it’s so difficult and so painful to everyone in the short run to go back, we all prefer to pretend and emend little things as we keep going. but nothing is longer really believed or sacred. It’s like we are living a big lie and no one has the courage or power to stop it. In our subconscious we know what could unify us and give a meaning to the journey, but the designed system is not designed for big changes. We all see the wall in witch we will colide but not one will talk about it. We don’t need to suffer in order to change. Please give me your thoughts about this. Thanks for your time. Eurico

"Did I want to get good things done, or did I want to stay a person I could live with?" Wow and yes, what a sad question to have to ask onesself in our modern dystopia.
Was this back before Eric had worked out how to have a 2-way conversation without interrupting his guests?
Yeah he forgot he wasn't the guest, here.
Eric, Really about time you got on the Podcast train, Almost doesn’t matter who or what you’re on about, great listen (& watch when poss). Thinking you’ve nailed it right outta the gate. Wish you’ll get to an assistant who’d be able to zoom in on your objects ' aka Easter Eggs ' as they’re super hard to see even full screen on the iPad. Keep nailing it, love the spurious 'lil sidetracks that more often than not are a fascinating short delve into supporting insights relative to your discussions....SC
Dr. Weinstein, thank you for creating your podcast and for shining light on ideas that little people like me never encountered in college or even grad school. The work you are doing is important and you are inspiring me to contribute in some way through art. Thank you for the inspiration. ❤
Yang2020 vs Trump is the only way to softly awaken America
I love Yang man. He would invigorate the country like nobody else. The DNC will do everything to prevent his nomination (if it came to that). If that crook Biden gets it, then I hope the democrats lose again.
@@itstimeforlee Yang/Tulsi vs Trump/Biden 🙏
Eric, your message is reaching the Southern tip of Africa. And it is extremely refreshing. #thesystemmustfall
Which system must fall?
At 2-HRS You "are" talking past each other and I agree with Sam yet Eric is at a deeper level. Both phenomena are clearly evident in our world. I love this edition, Eric.
This intellectual spitballing is fascinating. I’m sure there’s a much better term for it but it’s all I got right now. 10/10 🌎✌🏼
Eric, you are making me rethink my career in wrestling... I had this thought that I might be doing harm to the couple thousand fans I influence. People actually crave being lied to as long as it fits the current narrative. I guess my focus should be to create positive influence using my medium. 🤷
My boy Sam getting them grey hairs. We all getting old :(
How fortunate we are to get old 🙏

I love the idea of the white board. One of the reasons I love interviews like these is that I spend a large amount of time researching subjects or aspects of subjects I was not aware.
James Botts same! my “Notes” app is spilling over into a second page since starting to binge on stuff like this for the past few days.
Eric definitely does a great job of articulating what many have been thinking about for a while now. It's a New American Philosophy of sorts. Approaching things in front of you, refraining from defending and attacking groups. Being ok (encouraged even) to articulate anomalies without being forced to articulate a full position (or facing it our of someone else). He is definitely onto something.
This is the most I've ever seen Sam Harris laugh. Refreshing.
Listen to his podcast with his wife #159 on his show "Making Sense". They laugh a lot and it's interesting to hear how the conversation flows with him and his wife.
Could this change be due to his recent return to psychedelics?
I'm only 7 minutes in and I was thinking the exact same thing.
Listen to Sam's podcast with Douglass Murray. Murray goes off on a rant that has Sam nearly crying with laughter.
Because it's not Sam Harris.... try Ben stiller.
Eric "I predicted that" Weinstein
Well considering he made a breakthrough scientific observation that was straight up plagerised from him, I think he has the right the say he's made some predictions.

@@joehosier6187 Wasn't that Bret Weinstein ( regarding the telomere length of laboratory mice) or is there another breakthrough I'm missing ?

He covers both his and his brother's adversities in the midst of institutional corruption and narratives here. I don't know if you follow him on Spotify but it's a way better way to keep up to date than CZcams for The Portal.

This podcast really blew my mind! Two first-class intellects.
I hope one day il get to talk to some of these amazing people I nearly want to start a podcast just so I can speak with eric , Sam jordan and the so many great thinkers out there. Eric you blew my mind when you talked on another podcast about learning disabilities, I struggled really badly with dyslexia as a child , I had some extra help and by high school had found my own way of learning, had an exemption for language perticularly irish our native language that is mandatory. Now I can understand languages quite well, sometimes when reading comments in other languages I can kinda figure out what there saying. Not like on a genius level but soooo much more than what would have been expected with me after my testing and early childhood. Still not so good with the numbers/ math still cant remember my times tables. Amazing convo love how you two can disagree civily.
