@@michm5167 - American here. Trust me, the majority of Americans aren't put out by hearing other languages; it's a standard occurrence in populated areas. Many of us think it's kind of neat that some areas are so diverse. Sadly, there IS a small but outspoken percentage that IS scared of "outsiders," but please know that they are not the majority. Not even close.
As for Americans in a place like Paris, the disconnect stems mostly from not being able to hold a conversation, and not the feeling that English must be spoken everywhere. Any foreign traveler knows the discomfort of not being understood. As an American who was once in Paris without even being able to count to five in French, I assure you it's an awkward situation, but basic friendliness and hand gestures can get you far in a foreign country.

I am from Texas and can comfirm, we are indeed crazy, but most of us will be polite about it. One time my county flooded and a guy hopped in his kayak and rescued 6 of his neighbors before the professionals got there. He was never on the news though which was kind of disappointing. It was awesome. He also went back after the rescue to save a dog and squirrel.
