I just recently bought this one for my a6400 and never used any telephoto lenses before. Gotta say, it's super difficult to use if you take pictures of your kids running but once you nail that good shot, it's 100% pure gold. Probably much easier to use in studio settings but still, like you said in the video - highly recommended.
The Sigma 60mm f/2.8 was the first (non-vintage) lens I bought for the A6000, on your recommendation. It's been my favorite lens ever since. Great for portraits! I bought the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which is fantastic and very versatile as an "APS-C nifty fifty", also my most expensive lens so far.
I have been debating whether to get the Sigma 56 f/1.4, but hesitated since I already have the 60mm and maybe want to upgrade from the A6000 instead. Tough choice.
Still really like your reviews and other videos. Please keep doing what you do.
The Bokeh is smoother on the 56 because of the brighter aperture. If you don't shoot too much in low light , then stick with the 60mm.
I have the 56 and had the 60.
Double lens cap. Nice tip.
Excellent video, I really liked how you showed the images side by side. I had bought the 55mm as one of my first Sony lenses based on all of the hype, but it wasn't that great at all so I got rid of it. The purple and green fringing and the onion ring bokeh were just too much for me. Your video also shows that there's a green cast to that 55mm, and makes it obvious how much worse it is in every shot when compared to the 56mm.
I might have to pick up a Sigma 56mm to use in crop mode for when I go on trips with my a7R3 as it's a really small and sharp lens.
Video tip: Please lose the background music as it's a distraction when trying to listen to you. Excellent video otherwise.
Can't give an opinion on the 56, but have used the 16mm and 30mm and the 16 is just awesome for video. Wonder how the focus ring is on the 56, if it's more like the 16 or like the 30 as the one on the 16 is a lot smoother. That is actually an awesome tip at the end!
Thank you for a clear and concise review of the lens, very well done. Can you let us know what the focus breathing is like?
Because it's a short telephoto there is a little movement but very minor.
i use my 16mm almost all the time! don't know if i need a 55mm good video
Do you still use the 30mm for portraits? The 56mm is just excellent but kinda restricting focal length only for portraits with sufficient space, or concerts. I don't think I'll trade my 30mm for the 56mm
Does this lens take full advantage of the AF system?
Place the Zeiss 55 on a full-frame body and then compare it with the Sigma on an APS-C body. I hope you are aware that you have to multiply with the crop factor, not just the focal length of the lens but the aperture too. There is also a considerable penalty in the resolution. That is why the Zeiss looks so bad in your comparison.
Tony Northrop has been messing this up for years. Putting a 55mm 1.8 on a crop sensor only crops out the image to an equivalent field of view of an 82.5mm lens, but still has the bokeh and depth of field of a 55mm f1.8. You only need to do the aperture math if you want to figure out at what aperture an 82.5mm lens would have similar bokeh and dof.
@Lavikka Photography In 2022 would you still recommend the Sony A6000 with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 over a Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 35mm f1.8 for a general starting point in photography ?
Yes but an a6300 would be a little better for af.
I bought the old Sigma 60mm f/2.8 DN Art lens back in the day and later paired it with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN. Love how sharp both are.
I'm considering either switching the 60mm with the 56mm f/1.4 DC DN or upgrading my old trusty a6000 body to something like the a6100. I never shoot video, just photos.
What would you do?
Thanks for the great content,.as always.
The 60s are great lenses but the 56mm just has that great bokeh. in a few months you should see a price drop on the a6400 just a great camera.

At 11:00 min the photos of the girl's skin show a terrible yellow shift for the Sigma....or is it a red shift for the Zeiss? What is the 'real' color of the girl's skin?
The sigma on the right is closer to real life.
Ff lenses do not perform better on crop bodies actually they do it worst than a crop lens on crop body, the only reason to use them is if you plan to jump to FF and doing so you do not expense two times your money on lenses
I also have a a6400
and I’m considering to buy a 55mm zeiss,
After I saw this video,
the quality of pictures for 55mm looks so terrible!
Was it due to the full-frame lens + the aspc body?
But I’d seen other youtubers testing the 55mm za with a6XXX camera, the quality of pictures was not that terrible like this video!
The pics quality are even very sharp!
Jjyue Tony Northrop has a video on this topic, save your money and get sigma 56 mm 👍🏻.
another person who knows how to compare image quality, you and Arthur R, the rest needs to delete there youtube account and stop wasting viewers time!
