    I have the Zeiss 55 and I'm seriously considering swapping it for the Sigma 50. I have the Sigma 14-24 and the 100-400 and am really impressed with the quality of Sigma lenses. Thanks for helping me choose. Subbed.

    I dislike the Sigma's distortion performance very much and appreciate that of the Zeiss much, plus the excellent anti-flare performance and the feather light weight of the Zeiss 1.8 which can let you easily carry one or two more lenses when you shoot out, so Zeiss 1.8 is the winner IMO.

    i love the Zeiss, despite it's older design. they never are the best on paper yet they deliver something rare. it got a signature look with very pleasing color and contrast rendition. Its drawbacks are : minimum focus distance, lack of weather sealing gasket

    Regarding the 55, which I own, I never felt it was a “real” 50 mm,.. and here you can clearly see how much more is on the fov a 50 vs the 55.

      I’m considering buying the 55mm for my only lens (I’m buying my first sony so this would be my only lens for at least a year), I’m curious why you think it never felt like a real 50mm 🤔 choosing a one and only lens is stressful 😬

    • @atlas5459
      @atlas5459 Před rokem

      @@romalibra_books it really depends on what you will be shooting. If you shoot portraits why not. Anything else I'd go for a 24 - 70 zoom or a 28 (or 35) prime if you can only have 1 prime lens.

    Thank you for your extensivly and full reviews and comparision, but this is the first time when I feel your point for the more expensive Sigma is unfair - the Sony is cheaper, period. Without the prize this two lenses would finish in a tie - and I think it would be a fair result!

    There's one thing to be said: when it comes to 3D the zeiss wins every time. What I mean by this is that it always is easier to understand where every part of the image is positioned, call it 3D pop, although that term is really subjective.

    I do not like the 50mm focal length, any Lens shorter or longer than 50mm. So the 55mm Lens is ok, I have the Sony ZEISS Sonnar 55mm 1.8 ZA Lens which is compact, light (281g), it have very good sharpness, contrast and colors. I do not need aperture 1.4, the Sigma (Bigma) is huge and heavy, 660g, 735g with Lens Hood. Right now in november 2023 in my local Camera store you can get a used Sony 55mm for US$358 (included taxes). I can highly recommend the Sony ZEISS Sonnar now in 2023 and into the future.

    I think it would be much better to compare lenses in the same category. F/1.8 lenses are usually not comparable to f/1.4 lenses. I would prefer seeing it against the Sony Zeiss f/1.4 and the Sony f/1.2 G Master. But anyhow thanks for the review!

      50/1.4 and 55/1.8 are actually very comparable, especially regarding bokeh and separation - the extra 5mm focal length pretty well balance out the slightly wider apeture.

    • @radimpalus
      @radimpalus Před rokem

      @@sternschnupper Yes, but You can’t comment on size and weight and portability, as these lenses are in a different cathegory, due to different maximum apertures. And the 5mm matters. I had that lens and the old Sigma 50mm as well and You can certainly feel that the Zeiss is narrower when shooting, so You need to make one step back to get the same framing. You could make a comparison with some 40mm lens as well-it is close, but not the same.

    • @sternschnupper
      @sternschnupper Před rokem

      @@radimpalus everyone has their own usecase, of course. to some the step from 50 to 55mm matters, to others it's basically the same. and the difference in aperture also has it's usecase - in my case they matter regarding wonderful bokeh, great rendering and good separation from the background. and there the 55/1.8 and the 50/1.4 are VERY comparable. and regarding light gahtering 1.8 and 1.4 are not that different, especially since the 55/1.8 also has a transmission of 1.8 (haven't seen a transmission number of that 50/1.4 yet, the older zeis 50/1.4 had a transmission of 1.6, so even closer to the 1.8)
