this is very useful, I am planning on trying this tomorrow!
Awesome!
Thank you so much I’m def going to have fun with this especially for my two grandchildren 5 and 3 . I just purchased a 61 inch cage with stand lots of toys , a bath , a night time covering Cuttle bones now we need a feathered friend , I’ve had a parakeet , a cockatiel , and a Amazon yellow nape . 🌻🌻🌻
Hey Toni,
Sounds like you've got lots of goodies for your parrots!
It can be really fun to get kids involved with a little extra supervision. It teaches them skills along with the parrots! I'd highly recommend teaching them to target train too (if you haven't already!)
This was super useful, I’m gonna try again tomorrow with this toy
Awesome, let us know how it goes!
anyluck?
Yasss thank you I have that toy in the beginning and I'm trying to teach my cockatiel to play with it
Hey Starriq!
Awesome, let me know how they get on!
Yes I post clips of her in my channel
Woah there off topic but I started playing my favorite song (melanie martinez lunchbox friends) then my budgie was trying to sing along I'm surprised 😯🤯
@@starriq9083 Smart birdie! I will take a look!
My bird loves me now
Good thing to hear!
The real trick is finding those toys in the USA. :P
Great video!!!
Still in the process of getting Buddy to interact with normal toys. He does yeet this 1 ring foot toy I bought at least. Very cute to see when it does. He has been getting more and more cuddly with me now. Love when he makes those little leaps in trust.
It can be a little annoying finding learning toys, especially safe ones. I'm surprised about the US though, you'd think there would be loads over there!
Haha, shows he's enjoying it! It's also really great he's getting more trusting and cute with you.
@@TheParrotTeacher Lot of parrot toys over here seem to be made out of very questionable materials. or straight up dangerous materials. I am really picky about what I get now.
I mean they sell specifically aimed at parrots, items with dangerous metals. There seems to be no regulations on any parrot toys. It is really scary.
@@angsfeatheredfriends Some can be absolutely awful, so I agree you have to be careful.
But, if its hard plastic or acrylic it's generally fine (provided it's just for supervised play)
The real naughty ones are the treated woods, easily chewed plastic etc
Amazon 🌻🌻🌻
Nice new icon !
Really needed this video rn
Might buy something from your redbubble store for Christmas
Thank you! Needed a bit of updating!
Re-watch the other trick video if you can too as they work well together.
Awesome stuff!
COCKATIEL skateboard training - please make video on this
I can certainly try as I'm training Fish to play with one currently! You may need to wait a bit though!
I love your channel. So informative. I loved watching your other videos showing all your birds interactive toys. I want to buy all the ones I saw in the videos, so can you please tell me their names ( like Tidy up etc) and we where I can buy them.
And since you are so knowledgeable, do you think i should get my 10 yr old male cockatiel a friend?
Thank you so much, Cindy 😁
Hey Cindy, Thanks for the kind comment!
Where you can buy them depends on where you are in the world! But I'd imagine you'll be able to get these toys worldwide!
The white box with tokens is called "Zoomax Teach box and bank" we purchased it from Garden Feathers in the UK. It's the small version. It is available elsewhere though.
The ring toss is from Scarlets Parrot Essentials. But you can get these or variant ring toss toys from everywhere! Even Amazon has loads! I'd just check the reviews to make sure they are bird safe.
Some of the set ups/toys are from Sylvanian Families and the bottles/vending Machine is from a board game called Tokyo Jidohanbaki!
That last question is a more difficult one. If you have the space getting another cockatiel could be awesome for him! But, you'll also need to cage the new bird on it's own for a while. Firstly to protect the health of both the birds and then in case they don't get on. Because he's been on his own, he may be more bonded to humans than other birds. He will also likely see his cage as his territory!
Introducing them to each other will also need to be handled gently. They may bond really quickly and be best friends or (like our conures) be a little more hesitant and need lots of patience!
L'm subscribed to you
Thank you!
Lovely share, thanks! Unfortunately we don't find such toys here in India. My cockatiel is a cafe free flighted bird who has the run of the house (except after sunset, when I put him into his cage for the night). He is now 11 years old, and been with me since he was a baby. He whistles, talks some sentences, steps up, comes to me when he is called and plays a lot, throwing things down and asking for them to be put back so he can throw them down again etc (actually most of the time he's sitting on my head or shoulders or around me all the time). I'd like to teach him these kind of tricks (my parakeet used to do tricks that I'd trained her to do, but it's sadly been 3 years since she passed on). Do you think he can still be taught to do tricks at this age? (Kind of like teaching an old dog new tricks?!) Or should they be taught these only when very young?
He can certainly still learn tricks even at his age! It's never too late to begin training!
I'd start off with something as simple as target training so you can direct him effectively to what you'd like him to do! Also you don't need complex toys, something as simple as a scrunched up ball of paper and a small egg cup is enough to teach a fetch or tidy up behaviour!
@@TheParrotTeacher Thank you so much for your very prompt reply. He does actually do simple tricks like what you mentioned, but dropping a scrunched up ball of paper into my hand (instead of an egg cup or small bowl). He was never really interested in doing more complicated / complex tricks, while my parakeet picked them up easily and would do them, he would just prefer to watch her all the time (he loved her to pieces). He loved to play with a hanging bell toy and would keep ringing it madly sometimes, but this stopped after our parakeet passed away and he's bonded more closely with me than ever before since then, and though he plays and talks, whistles etc he's more often flying around after me or sitting on my shoulder or head while i do my work or chores, or on my finger getting scratches! For some reason he also likes to go behind the microwave or the door etc and stays there for a while, even singing to me if I call out to him! (Some kind of nesting behaviour I guess as these are little dark narrow spaces). Will try getting toys like the ones you showed shipped over from Amazon US or UK. Thanks again. Appreciate your immediate reply to my question! Hugs to you and your birds from India!
@@Kalyani065 No problems :)
When working with your tiels. Do you find it easy training as a group or one on one??
Hey Ben,
Definitely easier training them one on one. Group training does have the benefit of them learning by watching (for example Fish learned how to put bottles in things by watching Chip) but it's a little more challenging to manage unless you have two people.
Hello. I was wondering if you can teach your tiel what not to land on? I have rats and I know there is always the chance of rat attacks. So I'd love to be able to work with the tiels on leaving the rats cage alone.
Hey again Ben,
It'd basically be training in reverse and may be a little tricky, but far from impossible. You'd want to train them to recall and station to somewhere other than the cages so they'll favour those locations and not bother going elsewhere much.
Initially this would be done by reinforcing the locations you want them to go to heavily (for example lots of treats on a play stand) then moving on to recall and station training to that location.
@@TheParrotTeacher great idea.
I had also thought of maybe making a cage topper for the rat cage. Like take a flat square of plywood or something to cover the top. Then add a perch and or toys that both the birds and rats can enjoy, separately of course.
@@mrbeckles1980 That would work well!
You could even just use a towel when they are out temporarily until you can make one. Just something to stop their feet getting bitten through the bars!
@@TheParrotTeacher well that is even more cost effective. 😁
What do i tell my tiel to do that? Shoot? Put? 😅
For Chip we usually just say “tidy” or don’t even use a verbal just the reward
@@TheParrotTeacher thank youu!!
