- In today's video, Luna the 11 year old cockatiel learns how to play with toys! If you want to teach this to your bird, grab a box of our tiny toys (all natural and hand made!) and teach your bird to target first. My cockatiel loves cork, mahoghany pods and balsa wood. My parrotlet enjoys cork, sola, and mahoghany pods! Cork is definitely most loved tho!

My female cockatiel could not care less about toys, my male cockatiel likes to beat up on the raffia part of the toy but it's more like a boxing match rather than a tearing thing. My galah used to tear apart anything he could get his beak around, toys, books, the house.......

Loads of people seem to forget that you sometimes need to teach parrots to play with toys (just like with human children!)

I'm so glad to see Birdtricks doing a cockatiel video! My girl has been great about destroying toys since the day I got her but I just did the same kind of training with my conure and now she loves the birdtricks tiny toys!

This video has come at a perfect time. We unexpectedly added a new member to our flock about two weeks ago. Animal control caught a cockatiel after he had a window strike at one of the local YMCAs and brought him to the main office and no one had claimed him. We decided to foster/home him so he wasnt just stuck in an office all day. We only had experience with conures and a pionus so far, so we are still learning with him. I'm excited to teach him to play!

Dang i am late but this video is rlly helpful to me since my birds are scared whenever I try to teach them how to play with toys. They do like to shred a lot but they're just scared whenever they see toys

This is the perfect video for me right now I’m struggling to get my bird to engage with toys I was actually considering doing a consultation with you guys because of it. My only problem is that she’s sick and most days I can’t even get a training session in with her and if I am able to get just a few reps in before she quits on me. So I don’t know if copying this video is possible for me. It’s sad there’s so much I wanted to teach her.....
love your videos, I’m trying to calm my rescue Galah and he is very skittish and bites a lot he has broken skin before I tried using touch training but he attacked the stick and he is even more aggressive around food, any ideas? Keep going with these vids they help so much!!
Hello, it sounds like you are bringing in the stick too close. With aggressive birds especially, make sure you only bring the stick in so it can barely touch it with the tip of its beak. Jamie has a lot of videos on this technique but here is an old masterclass with target training an aggressive scarlet macaw.

I had thought foraging would be a natural way to transition to destroying toys. I guess that is learned behaviour too!

But she don't step up neither she is ready to get trained she is 13 now and I just want to know if there is any way I could tame and train her well
Every bird is ready. First step should be target training. You can look it up and see exactly how to do it. Also diet is super important. So make sure to avoid fruits and feed pellets and birdy chop (again you can look those up and find more Info)

Maybe for the same reason that budgies were mostly not included until they got blueberry? I’m glad to see the inclusion, my cockatiel is around twenty now, and not super mobile, but I’d like to try to teach her some pointer training.

@@greenapples3784 I used to b and hemp seed in a smoothie for myself but I guess I’ll use them for my Indian Ringneck. Meant for animal use in Australia any anyway.
I use a variety of treats aside from hemp seeds including sunflower seeds and millet! It's all about finding that treat ladder and what's least and most popular. :)
My vet said from hemp seeds my parrotlet has fatty liver upon xray making it hard for my parrotlet to breathe

how do u guys do this kind of stuff i had my cockatiel for one year and nothing he does not trust me at all i give him food from my hand when he will let me i wish someone could just train him for me
It takes time and patience. I had Luna for 11 years so a bond and trust was already in place. Remember, every interaction is a training session so make them all positive!
