To The Birds Who WON'T Play With TOYS! (The needy, separation-anxiety type!) | Feat. JINXI!

- With all of us in quarantine, I've noticed that my own macaw, Jinx, has become wayyyyyy needy... only wanting to interact with me as his sole source of entertainment and I know I'm not the only one experiencing an EXTRA NEEDY BIRD because you guys email in complaining about the same thing.
Since Jinx has shown a lot less interest in toys lately I decided to make a video that I've wanted to create for a long time (and it super requested by soooo many of you!): how to TRAIN your bird to play with toys!
So here it is, and Jinx was here to help me through it! For some behind the scenes in the making of this video, check out my OH FLOCK series on Patreon where I show how I work through issues with my flock in completely unedited training sessions here: / birdtricks

So true!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
hahah!!!
Lol, same! 🤣🤣
I have never had a parrot, so I applied to volunteer at a bird sanctuary for a while, as you suggested in another video. I found your channel while researching owning a bird, and I have learned so much! Thank you.
That is a wonderful volunteering opportunity!! Good luck!
That's awesome!
Have fun! I think I'm going to do it too and I'm super exicited!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Jamie: are you going to do everything right? ......probably not. :/
Jinxy: *evil laugh*
lol
He said bububub. As in Bubba his nickname.
That's a sweet slogan. 'Angels appear when feathers are near'. Love that!
Hi can we share what's app
It says Feathers appear when Angels are near ❤️
JINX IS LITERALLY SO CUUUTTEEE
Pink diamond 👀
I enjoy his personality the most out of her macaws.
@mattajas- yes. And figuratively, even
Yessss he isss
Perfect timing because my bird won't play with toys.
P.S Jinx is my soul, he is adorable!
How did you go with your training? About to start training mine to play with toys!
Jynxie is teasing you when she’s saying *come on !
"Bububububub". He sounds like a little kid pretending to have a machine gun xD
You yelling "WAAAA!" And jinx's reaction was no doubt the cutest thing ever.
My 60 year old Amazon was terrified of anything I would put in or near his cage and it took me a good two years to properly introduce him to playing with toys. I had (finally) discovered Birdtricks and quickly target trained him. Then I got the simplest bird toy from the pet shop (four coloured blocks on a single strand of sisal rope) and hung it on the outside of his cage. He freaked out and got pretty pissed off with me, but then I got the target stick and clicker out and he got a little more interested. I targeted him for a while, ignoring the toy. When he was completely focusing on the targeting and forgetting the toy, I slowly targeted him closer to the toy until he had to reach behind the toy to get to the target. I ended the session with a jackpot after he touched the toy by accident.
I then hung the toy in the cage and.... he refused to go near it.... About a month later I gave up on that toy and got him a different one. A little bigger, with square and round beads and cotton rope. He absolutely loved it! Completely destroyed it within a few days.
I've gotten him several different types of toys, but he just doesn't really know what to do with them, so I'll be training that soon as well. But anything with wooden beads... He just loves to sit on top of his cage, all fluffed up and munching on those beads. Even had a favourite bead at some point. A donut shaped blue bead that he had broken off but he kept climbing down to retrieve it and chew on it some more.
The four coloured blocks are still being shunned, but I've integrated them in a big scrap toy (leftovers put together :p )
I'm no expert, but it sounds like he would enjoy foraging type toys, where he has to tear them up to get at a treat inside.
He'll know the treat is inside, so that's motivation for him to get interested in them and foraging is a natural behavior. You can reduce and control which foraging toys have a treat once he gets the idea that playing with them is fun, so he doesn't eat too much while playing.
Oh, ironic. Just as I'm typing this Jamie starts talking about foraging.
@Sherloki That's awesome. :D
60 year old!? WOW
Sherloki I suggest natural wood toys and toys they can dig out and make a mess with. Making a mess with toys is very fun for birds beacuse it’s a natural habitat. Maybe try some of these toys!
He's picky, I mean, he's old enough to know what he likes.
I saw a comment on another bird channel that Birdtricks focuses more on improving the lives of the people than their birds...and this video is a perfect example of why that person was wrong! Everything Jamie and Dave teach has to do with improving the *relationship* between the bird and the owner, building trust, clear communication, and independence...and to me, it's obvious that that makes life better for *both* parties.
Don’t tell the others but Jinx is definitely my favorite! His sweet voice and little head dance is the cutest!! 🥰
Enjoyed all your great ideas! We needed some help here, this work from home change has got me (Mango, a Caique) wanting to just yell for my mom all day long because I think she's the best moving playground.
It's great to see that even a total professional can get distracted by how adorable their baby is. Now I don't feel so bad. Lol
Hi can we share what's
Unfortunately I am too old (67) to get a bird. I have 3 spoiled rescue cats and multiple health problems. So my life is often disrupted and I have to bow out and rest and revive. I see that I could not be a dependable bird mother.😿 I am glad I researched parrots before actually adopting one, because I see what a responsibility they are. 🦜❤️🦜 Still, I love them and am so thankful for all of your excellent videos-I get to love the birds vicariously and see how smart, unique and beautiful these wonderful creatures are. I especially love watching them free fly.
Thank you for all that you do for birds and their parents.
I have never even had a bird, but I love seeing how birds (kids, dogs, etc.) are motivated!! Great video!!!
Jinx puts me in mind of a toddler. That phase they go through when they throw everything on the floor to make you pick it up lmao. Seems like you're doing all the work Jamie haha. Good job Jamie!!! Good girl!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing and letting us in your home. I truly look forward to every new post. I've been following your guys for years.
Stay Safe, Happy and Healthy!!!!
Fellow Flocker,
Paulus Taylor
Just what I needed tonight -- antics by Jinx. It is clear who is in control in this relationship (hint: rarely Jamie) but how could she not fall victim to his cuteness?
I love how hes been cheeky to you as well as learning to play with toys.
Thank you for this! I re-did my conure's cage and did a session just like this and actually got a few hours without sad little "pew-pew" noises requesting to be picked up.
I would love to own a parrot, but I never will. I don't have the sheer energy, dedication and commitment you need, nor do I know anyone who would look after it if I no longer could. But I really enjoy experiencing them indirectly through your vids. Thank you.
PonderingStudent I own a 50 year old molucan cockatoo a rescue. I also volunteer at a parrot rescue. Thank you for being so wise to know your limitations regarding bird ownership. I might suggest if you enjoy birds they would surely enjoy a visit from you. Many rescue sanctuary’s are always needing help and I am sure they would welcome you with open arms.
My bird loves to play fetch with the disposable cardboard coffee sleeves you get from Starbucks. He tosses them and I have to go get it... LOL. (I am the dog in this scenario!)
AWEEE!!! THAT WAS SOO ADORABLE!! 💕💞
By the way i just got a new pet bird! (Budgie)
Aww, yay @KiaNamira!!
Congrats
Your birds always seem so perfect in your videos, one can easily assume that they’re always like that. Thank you for showing the hard parts too! And Jinx’s little yellow pants and chubby feet are super cute 😁
That bird, oh man, so.... oh, I want to squeeze the birdie!
Love Jinx and his little head movements (the little jerky ones). They’re so cute! And his quick “come on”. It would be so hard for me to focus on the training with all that cuteness!!!!!

watching this progression, especially seeing all the "failures", is super helpful!
my household has been hooked on your channel for days now! Kitty, my Green Cheek loves with watch with us! My daughter and I have learned so much so, and Kitty is loving learning new things!
I dont even have a bird and Ive been watching so many of these videos. I'm mesmerized.
I have an exotic avian rescue near me. Been thinking about volunteering there just to see what its like interacting with birds.
Never thought Id be so mesmerized by birds
Love this video! Thanks, Jamie, for showing us the way! It's one thing to read how to do it, and another thing entirely too see it in action!
I like the way of your interaction with the birds. There are so many owners who touch them in a way like cats or dogs. You respect the '"language" of the parrots. We had have some "problem parrots", no more wanted, but the real Problem was ALLWAYS the owner! Thanks for showing your videos, it's s a very intelligence way to usw You tube! Greatings from Berlin!
This is such a super useful and timely video, thanks so much
Hi can we share what's app
Helpful to see this and the work you put into it for his sake. My little guy definitely needs more training for toys.
Awww Jinx is probably my favourite out of all of your birds!
“Woo “ Altho Jinxie didn’t seem that impressed at first 😆 all that cuteness must be very distracting 😄
good to see Bean enjoying some training, it looks like he loves a good scratch. Adorable !
Hi can we share what's
Another great video! I keep watching all of your videos and enjoy seeing your birds :) despite not having any myself! :)
I love that you love parrots so much. So fun to watch you hang out with your birds. My buddy Isaac the African Grey is my friend forever. We celebrate every day all day. He really uses his ability to speak to do the same. Always saying the same things that I do when i am expressing my love for him. He gets it. Parrots raaaawwwwwkkk!!!
I grow loofah, would that be a good toy? Also, thank you for mentioning Parrotlets. I think they are sweet little birds. If you pay attention to all their signals, you can form a great relationship. Lilly came to live with me two years ago and I have had so much fun figuring out her personality and signals I can't imagine being without her now.
What a sweetheart. The thing I love most about being around them so much is the noises they star to make when I’m around. They get some funny phrases and whistles when you’re around more. I swear my Quaker says “Pink Panther” on repeat now.
I loved this video! Your reactions to Jinx are sooo good LOL
Jinx looks great, and it's always nice to see him interact with you. Never realized until birdtricks, how important it is to teach some birds how to play with toys. Ba Ba Ba Ba , lol.

@@6743aman , pardon me?
@@6743aman calm down dude
I have watched this video at least 3 times and I don’t even have a bird. But your birds are beautiful and you and your family are a joy to watch. Jinx is my favorite he is so funny and so handsome. Thank you for helping so many birds and making videos that are so enjoyable to watch.
This is so amazing! Ps: really fun and funny! i have a bird but a parakeet but im getting another! i love your birds laugh! it makes make me laugh!
Foraging in her food bowl was the best tool to get my bird to play with her toys.
IM SO HAPPY YOU MADE THIS VIDEO.... mine not only doesn't play with hanging toys, he hates them in the cage and takes them down he ONLY plays with them in his toy box when he's having out of cage time
2:55 I laughed out load! Brilliant video thankyou and Jinx. X
Even the birds are simping
It took months for me to get Cheeky to play with toys when I first got her. Despite the fact she's a cockatoo, what really helped was easier to chew materials. To this day, she's often happier with softer woods or cardboard vs a challenge. Lazy birb aha
I am starting really late in the game but I really got some great ideas from you. I also was happy to see some of the things I was doing were right ...made me a little more confident.
To the editor: Jamie's voice is only heard on the left speaker. It feels bad when you're using headphones. Hope the feedback helps, the videos are awesome
for me it’s only the right
o/ only the left ear here. had to scroll down to see if it was just me.
I Just hear friction on one ear
I love your videos so much and I don’t even have birds! Lol but your videos are so informative and just give you such a different understanding of birds. I cried when you lost Bandit and btw so sorry for your loss. Anyway thank you and your family for the video’s they are great. I love your life. ❤
You’re brilliant. Thank you! We got two rescue budgies one month ago and trying to get them to become less fearful of basically everything. Progress is slow but happening with the toys. Thank you helping me, help them.
I always found reverse psychology works well. " Don't touch that" because birds like humans seem to hear "Touch that"
Yes, that's a good one!
@@BirdTricks Used to have a lot of fun new toys left a paper bag. My bird could say "no" and he knew the meaning as well because when told not to touch, he would I would then say to him "what did I tell you and he would reply "No" I had to laugh at him so he would do it more. He loved to look in shopping bags as well.
Jamie, Love, your determination! Love, your Expertise! P.S. BIRDTRICKS!
You are the best. I noticed something you say that I caught myself saying. When calling an animal we all say “get” over here. We are telling them to get or move away. We should say come over here or come here. lol. I am always correcting myself. lol. I just think it’s funny. Everyone does it! 😁. I love all your videos. Tysm for making them!
Thanks to Jinx, Bubs has become a term of endearment I use. My birds, my husband. They are all bubs now.
I’ve started to call my dog bubs
Great video! Your technique worked for our new rescue! Very very exciting thank you! I’m a huge fan of you guys!
How long did it take yours to start playing independently? About to start this training!!
@@ashleymcintyre4716 we started in the evening before dinner and the next morning noticed since then we got an African grey and used this technique. Once we put the toy in the cage he interacted
I had my own parrot became overtly needy and attached to me too, to the point he would get separation anxiety if I was away for even an hour and pluck himself until he was bleeding. This situation didn't just suddenly come up overnight, it gradually got worse over the course of many years until I didn't know how I could reverse his behavior. It was such a stressful time, I didn't know what else to do to help him. I made the very hard decision about 4 years ago to surrender him to a parrot rehab facility. I personally visited the location in-person and paid for his vet fees. It wasn't much but it was the last bit of love and care that I could offer to ensure his future. Last I heard, he was becoming more socialized in the rehab facility and eventually got adopted by a good owner. He weighs heavily on my mind even now and I still think of him often.
I taught my eclectus to chew on wood as a trick. So far she's not super interested in it in the cage if I'm not there rewarding, but she's has a lot of fun with loose slats outside of the cage. It took her just a couple minutes to figure out what I wanted!
This is very helpful, thank you!
Seeing him take it and throw it down reminded me of when my birds taught me how to play fetch. lol, it’s their favorite game to play while sitting on our kitchen island. They even taught our dogs by throwing claws full of food out of the cage to see them scramble for it!
lol
I had no idea the big log thing could house treats. Kermit has many toys but only ever plays with the orange hanging one. Thanks for the video!
I'm trying to fix separation anxiety in a bird that had a very unique bonding experience with me, so his behaviors are all out of wack yay
This is awesome. My cockatiel plays with anything I touch but I’m still watching because it’s too cute!
I have a blue fronted amazon. He is always afraid of his toys for about 3 months, before he'll play with them on his own. He'll play with his toys right away, if he helps me make his toys. He likes to pick out the pieces that he wants on his toys. If he's part of the process, than he'll play with his toys right away. He feels proud that he was part of the process.
Im so thankful
I just started learning about this stuff from you guys.
I got given 3 baby lovebirds and I am so glad to know what not to do.
Thanks for being honest about your learning & so encouraging.
We have a rescue sanctuary in maleny & I really am excited to go there again & learn from them.
Jinxy you honestly melt my heart!!! 💙💛
Thank you BirdTricks this is going to help me with my Quaker love u guys and thank you for all the info I have learned a lot from just your videos❤️❤️❤️
You're awesome. We just got cockertiel and some parrokets looking forward to learn more from you as my thirst keep growing for birds I want to get a Quaker as well . All your tutorials😻😻😻 big hug and blessings from St.Louis MO
Hi baby
Ohhh thank you!❤️ My Greenwing, is still playing with toys (sometimes) but due to us being around all the time & the loss of my cat and great Dane who were always with her (my other cat now uses me as an emotional support animal & clings to me) so when no one is in the big room with her she tantrums & screams the house down. & She was never a screamer.
Hearing the chainsaw in the distance while Jinx is displaying his toy destruction was perfect!
Thank you, BirdTricks!!
I have a very picky, white faced cockatiel. Getting him to play with any toy was near impossible. I followed every step, placed food in the toys, praised him when I saw him playing with them, and hung them near his favorite hang out spots. Now my only problem is keeping a steady supply of toys on hand (as he goes through them so fast!)
Jinx is really cute, love those bigger birds too :) I‘m glad our galah is really playful and playing with toys on his own, speaks a whole lot, comes to us for cuddling and is generally ‚easy‘ to handle even though he’s just 2 yrs old xD
Love your videos !!!
currently trying to work through severe separation anxiety with an elderly caique, thank you for being a resource! She does play with toys but only when people are with her so I'm going to try more/easier foraging toys than the ones she currently has.
This was so interesting to put toys on the table and to see how well it works with the bird,so good.
Linda, you are right, sometimes we play with Kiwi & her toys on the ground.
The ppl who disliked this video are probably jealous because they don't have a bird to play with
I don't no how but your amazibg tricks always work
Jinx is like I’m a human not a bird 😂
What a cute parrot.
Beautiful, beautiful bird ❤️
So adorable and so smart.
Jamieleigh: don't move a muscle!
Jinx: **moving his head** i'm so bad >:D
lol
Is he blushing or is the pink/red normal? I'm fascinated with this ability. Lol!! He is adorable!!! Loooove the relationship between you two!! As always, GREAT and enjoyable information! Ty!!
The most beautiful bird I've ever seen♥️♥️♥️♥️
I have a budgie and he rarely plays with his toys he loves target training. And this worked right away. He use to the the toy I just got him to shred! Like a paper shredder not to mention it was one I ordered from y’all hahahahaha he now likes it thanks to you!
I trained my cockatiel to forage through his toys. He loved them so much!!! My birds now can’t wait for me to get all their toys out everyday. I put their food in their basket swings as well. I don’t think they ever eat their food in their food dish. I’m pretty proud of my foraging you’re collection. I’ve spend probably $300 on bird stuff just recently. Lol. I’m having way too much fun with my bird stuff apparently! Lol!
Toy collection not you’re collection. Ugh auto correct. Lol
He is gorgeous bird..I don't think I've seen one with those color in a long time!!
Awesome video!
Your intro tho 😍 love your channel 💘
So cute :3 (ps i don’t know if you noticed but you might want to map the audio to both speakers, it’s currently just on the left!)
my quaker is both clingy and independent at the same time. she wants to be around people even when she should be sleeping but as soon as she stops screaming for human to come back (about 4 minutes) then she’ll go about destroying her toys and stuffing things through her cage bars. She’s a fan of leaving all the shredded bits on my carpet for me to clean up later. Yay😂
Thank you for the great lessons!
Who’s training who LOL! Love the vid!
Had to laugh starting at 14 minutes. The game of throw something and make you pick it up is every animal or child's fav game. I can't believe you fell for it though.
Very good video !!
I wish someone would give me a treat after I throw my toys on the floor. I love how you have such wonderful close up footage.
I got a cockatiel a few months ago and me and my family love it however we are having trouble cutting it’s nails can you please make a video on how to cut a small birds nails?
Thanx love you guys
Really beautiful bird
I love your birds and your family you take care of them so well
Have a good day
My cockatiel, Baby, is very needy and over-attached. He does enjoy toys like corn dog sticks, candy wrappers, bottle caps, and toothpicks, but gets EXTREMELY hormonal over them, often resulting in biting.
