It's finally time hit the mean streets of Belgrade on a cold, January morning for the big Burek video! Yes, time for some Serbian food at Trpkovic Bakery close to Slavija Square - but is the 'BEST' Burek in Belgrade? Let me know about your 'best' Burek in Belgrade!
Bakery location - Trpkovic Bakery, Nemanjina 32, Beograd - close to Slavija Square (where the A1 bus from the airport drops you) - pekaratrpkovic....
Burek is common dish not only in Serbia, but across the Balkans, Eastern Europe, Turkey and areas of Asia with origins dating back to the time of the Ottoman Empire. In laymen's terms, it's a spherical pastry-like dish make of pastry/dough similar to filo pastry with fillings ranging from meat, cheese and vegetables.
It's available in bakeries throughout Belgrade (but not every Belgrade bakery as I discovered last year on a previous trip!). It's more common to see locals eating burek in the morning. A must is to have some yoghurt to wash it all down with! Overall burek is filling, hearty and really warms you up on a freezing, Winter morning!!
    I hope you enjoy!

I tend to eat with my mouthful too.
I'm originally from Bosnia, and burek there is not commonly considered a breakfast food but more something you get for lunch or even dinner. Of course, food habits keep changing with time, availability, and buying power of the customers. When I was serving my military stint in Belgrade in the mid-70's, people would usually get pogachice from street kiosks or bakeries for breakfast - phyllo dough biscuits with some cheese filling.

Hey David, Looks fantastic there. I wish I could visit there in Belgrade someday and get a real feel of what it would be like to live there. As an American I think the visa requirements to stay long term like any place in Europe might be a real hassle. I believe Serbia may join the EU this year. I'm certainly glad you've finally had some BUREK! It's been, almost, a quest it seems. I've had a good time watching your Belgrade playlist, it was (kinda) funny that you haven't been able to get your hands on one for so long.
I'm from Belgrade, currently living abroad, so whenever I get a bit nostalgic I like to watch foreigners videos on Belgrade. Your videos would be in TOP 5 if I was making a list. Good work. Sincerely, those 31% you carry in your DNA pool seems to give you an edge over the others... :)
Now, I see that you're struggling with Trip Advisor and such for info so let me help as much as I can before I finish my coffee and head out to work...
PLJESKAVICA!! Or as it's known to you lot, a hamburger... Did you know that some people claim that hamburger (pljeskavica) has been "invented" in Serbia? Don't know if it's true or not but in all my travels, I haven't been able to match the experience of Serbian pljeskavica with any burger anywhere in the World. And, since you're in the capital, I'll give you 2 places to visit in downtown area.
    1. Vencac (in Cyrillic spelled "Венчац") - Carice Milice street, don't know the number but very close to the park. You've passed the place at least 10 times and you haven't noticed it, I'm sure. There are two ways to have pljeskavica in Vencac. First one is, you go in, sit inside and get pljeskavica (big one) on a plate with fries etc. Second one, is order pljeskavica over the counter and have it in a bun. Same food, two ways to eat it , two sizes. But be aware, the waiter there, great guy, is half deaf so don't be alarmed when he turns his head one way to hear what you're ordering. :)
    2. Prava pljeskavica (Права Пљескавица), actually translates to "The Real Pljeskavica" - Takovska street (close to junction with Cvijiceva street). This one is a bit off center but worth the trip. There is a whole story behind the old man who owns it, here is a link, maybe get someone to translate :) czcams.com/video/L1iqyD6Wg1Q/video.html

Every time I decide to have a burek for breakfast , 1 liter of jogurt is a must, never below that. I generally drink too much of jogurt whatever pastry I eat, whether it's burek or whatever else you may find in an average serbian bakery, because jogurt just makes it all flow much more gentle and it feels like mixing hot pastry with cold fluid jogurt! hahah this is the philosophy of bakeries in Serbia

7:34 yo bro, I don't recommend crossing the street when the red light is on. Please only cross when the green light turns on, I'm speaking for your own safety. Cars are passing by at full speed sometimes. It's total opposite to London, regarding the street crossing culture.

You went to one of the best places in Belgrade to get “Burek” , but you didn’t get the original burek. Burek is made out of one piece, it’s not separated. Next time you go to that bakery you should ask for Burek not Pita or Sirnica.

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  Před 4 lety

I've already explained this 1000 times. I asked for burek sa sirom. That's what the bakery employee gave me. It's not called sirnica in Serbia

Burek with cheese can be risky, there are many variations of cheese that can be used.
Plain, mild, bitter, sour, salty, ...
When I was a kid I liked it, but I liked "empty" (prazan) more.
Right now I like burek with meat (and it has black pepper and a lot of onion inside as well). See czcams.com/video/KCsnJH8awHw/video.html
There is no "the best place" as many of the places all over Belgrade are "the best".
They mostly copied the recipes and the methods from each other.
There are also more rare versions with apples, sour cherries, spinach, "pizza", ...
But the cheese, meat and empty are the most common.
Completely different thing (bat the same, but the different) is "bosanski burek" (Bosnian), but they mostly don't know how to make it.
It is (almost) never as soft as in Bosnia, sometimes is not soft at all.
