🇷🇸 BELGRADE, SERBIA - TRAVEL DAY 990 - Welcome to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia! This video is PART 1 of a THREE PART SERIES!
Belgrade has an IMMENSE history! It's seriously OLD, dating back to Roman and Ottoman times, has stunning food, cool things to do, brilliant nightlife and most of all, the people are brilliant!
8 months ago I did a DNA test with MyHeritage.com - despite knowing I had Polish heritage on my mother's side - there was always a question around whether I had more Southeastern European roots - the test confirmed I was 31% Balkan so having already been to Poland, I wanted to visit the Balkans to learn more about my potential heritage, and I'm glad I did!
In this video I give you a bit of an introduction to Belgrade as a foreigner, talk about my own preconceptions and the actual reality, visit the Nikola Tesla Museum (that guy was a serious GENIUS!), check out the yet to be built Metro, highlight some of the architecture and history as well as mention points around life as Digital Nomad or backpacker in Belgrade.
There are so many things to do in Belgrade - stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 where we visit some more of them!

Savamala is not dangerous. It's a hipstery quarter where clubs, bars and restaurants moved into old abandoned buildings and made them their own. It's a must-visit when in Belgrade
Absolutely! I thought it was cool! Thanks for reassuring viewers!
Serbia is such an interesting country! We've been to Croatia, Montenegro and Albania but Serbia is on the list 😁👌
Igf you have a few hundred years 10 children or more than this land belongs to you amen

The first question that I'm frequently asked when I travel outside of Serbia is "what part of the city is unsafe? Where are the gangs? And stuff like that.
There is no unsafe part of the Belgrade or any other city in Serbia. We don't have gangs or ghetto neighbourhoods at all. Yes there is a mafia but civilians aren't targeted, worst thing that can happen to the tourists is to be pickpockets targets but if you have any awareness in public transportation or in public areas in general, you're safe.
Serbs are proud people, difficult to understand especially if you never visited Serbia but after visiting everyone changes their previous opinion usually formed using Western propaganda news stations or Hollywood movies (Serbs are usually bad guys). Serbs are warm and friendly people who have rooted family traditions and respect in their education.
For example you will never hear in Belgrade that Croats or Albanians are hurted at the streets, and every single person have a good time in Serbia no matter where are you from but if Serb goes to Croatia you can bet that he is going to have some kind of a problem down the road. That tells you a lot and because of rough history Serbs are sometimes to much stubborn and that cost them a lot. But basically as a nation we are kind and all what we want is to be respected and left alone.
I love your views. Really looking forward to getting back!
False i got shot in Belgrade
@@djole1151 what? How's that even possible? That's a lie. Prove it.
@@djole1151 I looked at the your channel, what are you talking about? You are obviously from this region, you are not the tourist! So if you was shoot you probably had mixed up with the mafia, and obviously from the video that you have at your channel that's about the drugs addiction. So you are junkie (heroin addict) and that explains a lot.
Haha is "safe" and aint ghetto when you see world just with you eyes...Many people from many hoods just cant go all around Belgrade, say them that is "safe".How come that people who got money her talk about whole city, what you are ambasador or what.I personaly is a only boy from my school that never be in jail, know more than 15 people who die young, kill or drog overdose...If you dont know nobody who is strugle every day and still live like shit, you are just spoiled midle clas kid who got money and parents pay you school and everything...

I absolutely agree 100%. I loved it, glad you had a great time too. It's definitely an underrated city, I say keep it that way so people like us can appreciate it 😄
You could have gone for a walk at 3am without a hint of a problem. It's ridiculously safe here, we locals stay out late into the night all the time.
The USA or some other country can give their own land to Mexicans or migrants or whomever, but not mine, especially because we consider Kosovo our holy land...
I am wondering what the hell has to be Mexico in your statement
Seems like you know very little history of the USA and Mexico.
@@wetguavass hope u are not talking to me, if so, you have no idea about how much I know about Mexico and USA history

!
Thank you for your great introduction to Serbia. It was a country I never looked into. It looks so interesting and beautiful. Enjoy!!!😊
It was awesome! Definitely up there with Mexico!
I like the way Belgrade looks! Real, honest, beautiful. The war comes to mind for me too everytime I think of some of the countries that used to be Yugoslavia. And each time I think of them, a movie that I saw many years ago comes to mind - I cant remember the name, but I remember that it started out with a group of neighbors eating together at a house and how, when the war broke, they ended up fighting on different sides. I also remember the end of the movie when a female main character showed the destruction and asked if after so many centuries of human life, of humans having sex and babies, talking about "purity of race" was even possible -. That is what I think of whenever I think of one of these countries. And it is crazy that a film is the main basis of my image of a country when I hate that movies and media shape the image people have of Mexico. I have yet to create an independent idea of these countries and your video definitely helps doing that!! Looking forward for part 2 and 3!
YASSSS. I felt exactly the same but in terms of allowing news reports in the 90s to shape my opinion. I guess that's what travel is all about, going somewhere to make up your own mind. I was questioning whether or not mention the wars as I know it's a sensitive subject but that's the honest truth how my preconceptions were formed. When I went to Belgrade, people in the UK were messaging me "omg is it safe" just like they did with Mexico. You don't need me to elaborate on what I said in response! BELGRADE ROCKS
grazie mille!
Hi Dave! Belgrade looks amazing!! Wow! Don't forget to show Art Deco Architecture 😊 Have fun and I just love your videos! 💖
Omg, i didn't see much! Just some residential buildings with some slightly art deco doorways!

5 EU countries don't recognize *Kosovo as independent state, so EU stance in not really clear here.
And *Kosovo is not part of UN and how things are going, it won't be in near future. Also, about half of countries in UN does't recognize their independence.
So, your statement that 'As far UN and EU are concerned, they recognize *Kosovo as independent state.' is somewhat wrong.

During the 90's the Serbians were cast as villains during the Balkan war in the US and Europe, l guess the Serbs looked at it from their own nationalistic point of view. Tito was a darling of the West because he acted independently of the Soviet Union. Lastly Tesla is enjoying a renaissance in the US, he is getting due recognition for his contributions to the modern electrical system, just imagine the modern world without electricity. David, is good to know about other parts of world, you got a good eye for describing cultures, great work.
Gracias amigo! Everything you say, absolutely right. I remember in the 90s watching on the news, there's always been so much negativity about Serbs when in reality they are just as welcoming as Mexicans!
It was all propaganda, whole 90s war was a civil conflict with around same number of victims on all 3 sides (Croats-Serbs-Bosniaks) and Western media portrayed it as only Serbs were aggressors and killing all others (not mentioning it was actually Serbs from Croatia and Bosnia protecting their homes, it was not Serbs coming from Serbia to conquere foreign land and ethnicly cleanse), Kosovo was another pure media war, there was never ethnic cleansing of Albanians, it all started with Albanian terrorist groups kidnapping civilians (and selling rheir organs, internationak investigation proved that), killing Serbs (over 3,000 still missing), setting bombs on buses and police cars, so Serbia sent army (as any independent state would do), Albanian terrorist groups were even few months before 1999 Nato bombing of US black lists, Serbian army only fought those armed groups and not civilians. In the end of that bombing 300,000 Serbs were forced out of their homes from Kosovo, and not a single Albanian, so western media made a victim picture of Albanians so US could finish the job of occupation of Serbian land and creating second biggest military base in Europe, it was never about protecting civlians, like its not the case with Iraq, Libya, Afhgan etc, basicaly all US aggression overseas wars.

Serbia and Belgrade have so much to offer and mainstream history doesn’t teach us and the world about it!
If you visit Belgrade, visit LEPENSKI VIR & VINCA near Donji Milanovac & DJERDAP about 165 km or about 2 h drive from Belgrade where you’ll find the location of an oldest civilisation in Europe.
www.serbia.com/visit-serbia/cultural-attractions/archaeological-sites/lepenski-vir-the-oldest-urban-settlement-in-europe/
They don’t teach the world about that!
Also Serbia’s Belgrade is a home Roman emperor Jovian. 17 Roman Emperors come from Serbia including the very FIRST Roman Emperor, Trajan Decius.
Constantius II was born in Serbian city of NIS.
The bigest number of Roman Emperors wre born in Sermuim or midern day SREMSKA MITROVICA.
www.serbia.com/visit-serbia/cultural-attractions/archaeological-sites/lepenski-vir-the-oldest-urban-settlement-in-europe/
The mainstream history teaches about this Roman history but it never teaches that most of those Roman Emperors DO COME FROM SERBIA.
It looks like a fascinating place? Question, do they still have Yugos cars over there?

Great video, and you look happier, too. I'm glad you left Mexico. I was SO bored with your channel, honestly, when all the videos were nonstop Mexico, Mexico, Mexico, Mexico. I could feel you were in a rut and bored with it, too. That has happened to me with places I *used to* be fixated with, like Prague, for instance. There's something so energizing about leaving behind a place that gets stale and discovering something new.
YASSS. As much as I love Mexico, I was there for too long (esp around CDMX time), however places like Acapulco, Zacatecas and San Luis really reenergised me. I'm going back in December but things are going to be more about location independence than travel. I'm f***ing exhausted after 1000 days!
@The Tao of David I have to correct you here: The EU did not recognise Kosovo as an independent state. There is no consensus about that. 5 member states still refusing to recognise despite US pressure: Spain, Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus and Romania. Thank you for making this video. Cheers!
Thanks man, I think I read that after I filmed it lol
I appreciate all kinds of cities - not just the postcard perfect ones. I like a little soul and grit as long as there's some interesting architecture and good people. I honestly haven't given Belgrade much thought til now but I would have said Yes if someone invited me there. I know they were at war and all but I know that is long over. And Yes, I knew that Tesla was a great scientist but didn't he was from there. Good video as usual.
Grit is always more interesting than polished and perfect!
Tesla was Serb from Austro-Hungary (todays Croatia but didnt exist then), his father was priest of Serbian church, for example big part of his family (and most of the Smiljan village) was killed by Croatian Ustasha Nazi regime in WW2, just to see how he would end up if he stayed there. But Serbs from Ex-Yugo area consider Serbia as homeland, so same was with Tesla, he left his whole heritage to his niece, who brought it all to Belgrade, although Tesla basically had no connections with this city (except for visiting it).

Those DNA tests might actually be true :) You are an exact copy of my neighbor who is Serbian :D
Regarding Kosovo: Well it is not in UN. And the UN chart 1244 says that Kosovo is Serbian land. So it pretty much boils down to what "powers" recognizes it. Western or Eastern. You can compare it to South and North Ossetia. Russia recognizes it, most of the world doesn't. I'm sure those countries who are influenced by the eastern "media, Culture etc" think of South and North Ossetia as independent, just like random western European country thinks Kosovo is independent.
If we are not going to follow UN charters then we all might just start writing our own borders.
At the end of the day I do not believe neither Russia or the West really care about Kosovo, it's interests and money talking. There are far more people in the world that deserves a country, for example the Kurds. Albanians already got one.
I don't know why everyone thinks I said UN, I said US! Lol

I don't know much about that part of Europe because it isn't one of the places that we hear much of when in the US or Mexico..
I think I've heard that it's mostly Muslim.. it was a part of the previous Yugoslavia.. it is not one of the rich countries in Europe (that can be a good thing).. I assume it's cheaper ( or not as expensive).. I would think it has a beautiful natural landscape.. the city probably has a very nice aspect as there probably was not as much development during the 80s and 90s.. let's see
Interesting! Especially the point about not being heard about in US and Mexico
Serbia is mostly orthodox christian, but you're pretty much right about everything else. 😄
You are right about everything except that is mostly muslim. There is just muslims in Bosnia and little in Serbia...most of people are christians and we are not rich like England,Germany,France but definitly not poor like African and South American and some Asian countries.....So if you are Mexican its not gona be cheap for you bro but it will not be that expensive and if u come to Serbia you will have a nice time cuz people here like Mexicans and you whould not belive how many similarity is between these two nations
Tesla is my man! I’m an electrical engineer.

Did you happen to see those bombed out buildings downtown that supposedly were bombed by NATO? The Serbian government left it like that so visitors can see part of what happened back then.
But, Bosnia sustained the most damage and deaths. It was my most favorite and interesting country over there when I visited.
Did you see any Yugo cars? I saw a few when I was there. That's of course where they were made😁

there are no unsafe areas in belgrade. zero. not every neighborhood is pretty. but it doesn't matter . they are all safe any time of night of day unless you do something really really stupid and there is someone dangerous around to take advantage of you and then you are unsafe in any neighborhood anywhere.
Agreed. I can't remember what I said in this video as it was years ago but I think I was talking about another video I'd seen? Since 2019 I've spent a lot of time in Belgrade and Serbia as a whole and just from that time I 100% agree with you. I bloody love Serbia. I fell in love with Užice (some might say that's weird lol). Serbs are Caucasus Slavs and a bit Ottoman, Poles are Ural Slavs. Very little heritage for you there.
Yeah the test showed 'Balkan' rather than Serbian, it was just somewhere to start. My grandfather's side was fully Polish as far I'm aware, it's my grandmother's parents that were originally from the Balkans or possibly even Romania. We can't be sure as records were destroyed in WW2

@@davidostrowski679 and Serbia is not serbia and not to be Kosovo Serbia pathetic
I will just correct your facts: You said: "US and UN" recognized Kosovo as independent, but there is a catch, it is a lie, you have been misinformed. UN officially does not recognize Kosovo as independent country, UN official stand is that Kosovo is a Serbian territory under UN protection (Resolution 1244 is still in power, and it will not be changed without China, Russia consent, and that will happen... never) until conflict is resolves (actually, conflict ended 20 years ago, but it is up to UN to say when it is officially over and what is final result, and because US, Russia and China cannot find same language about anything, it would probably be officially resolved... never). Same situation is with EU: although most members of EU recognized Kosovo as independent country, and you might have impression EU recognize Kosovo, 5 EU members don't (including Spain, which will never do that because it will be giving the green light to Catalonia, Basque etc. for their independence) , so officially, all being decided unanimously in EU, EU as whole doesn't recognize Kosovo as an independent country also. And that is the most difficult situation for Kosovo, because they live surrounded by EU or EU candidates, and to official EU administration their status would always be administratively and officially same as UN's as long there is only one EU country that doesn't recognize them. They felt it already, being unable to get visa liberalization or start any official negotiation with EU for 15 years now, and it would change only when they finally resolve their status with Serbia, which will happen... of course, never, because they say they are independent, and Serbia says they are not, so it is stalemate.
Well, now knowing the official facts, you tell me: is Kosovo independent country, officially unrecognized by 3/4 of main political world powers, and unrecognized by 52% (100 of 193) of UN members?
Thanks man, I think someone told me similar about a year ago (this was about 2 years ago). I always dread to comment further, it's not really my place!
@@davidostrowski679 Well, it actually is, because GB, amongst other NATO countries, 20 years ago bombed 90 days that Belgrade you are enjoying now (which is, by the way, 500 km away from Kosovo, that they "were defending" from Serbs), and they bombed city center, civil infrastructure etc., and a lot of people died (mostly civilian). It is your place, as GB citizen, to ask your government why no one responsible for that wasn't prosecuted for war crimes. And not just for Serbia, for Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya etc., the list is long, long, long... Turning head to the other side works only temporary. Tomorrow will some new Osama blow up in the air your family, and you would not even know why, or better say because of whom.
