🇷🇸 BELGRADE, SERBIA - TRAVEL DAY 990 - Welcome to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia! This video is PART 1 of a THREE PART SERIES!
Belgrade has an IMMENSE history! It's seriously OLD, dating back to Roman and Ottoman times, has stunning food, cool things to do, brilliant nightlife and most of all, the people are brilliant!
8 months ago I did a DNA test with MyHeritage.com - despite knowing I had Polish heritage on my mother's side - there was always a question around whether I had more Southeastern European roots - the test confirmed I was 31% Balkan so having already been to Poland, I wanted to visit the Balkans to learn more about my potential heritage, and I'm glad I did!
In this video I give you a bit of an introduction to Belgrade as a foreigner, talk about my own preconceptions and the actual reality, visit the Nikola Tesla Museum (that guy was a serious GENIUS!), check out the yet to be built Metro, highlight some of the architecture and history as well as mention points around life as Digital Nomad or backpacker in Belgrade.
There are so many things to do in Belgrade - stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 where we visit some more of them!

The first question that I'm frequently asked when I travel outside of Serbia is "what part of the city is unsafe? Where are the gangs? And stuff like that.
There is no unsafe part of the Belgrade or any other city in Serbia. We don't have gangs or ghetto neighbourhoods at all. Yes there is a mafia but civilians aren't targeted, worst thing that can happen to the tourists is to be pickpockets targets but if you have any awareness in public transportation or in public areas in general, you're safe.
Serbs are proud people, difficult to understand especially if you never visited Serbia but after visiting everyone changes their previous opinion usually formed using Western propaganda news stations or Hollywood movies (Serbs are usually bad guys). Serbs are warm and friendly people who have rooted family traditions and respect in their education.
For example you will never hear in Belgrade that Croats or Albanians are hurted at the streets, and every single person have a good time in Serbia no matter where are you from but if Serb goes to Croatia you can bet that he is going to have some kind of a problem down the road. That tells you a lot and because of rough history Serbs are sometimes to much stubborn and that cost them a lot. But basically as a nation we are kind and all what we want is to be respected and left alone.

I like the way Belgrade looks! Real, honest, beautiful. The war comes to mind for me too everytime I think of some of the countries that used to be Yugoslavia. And each time I think of them, a movie that I saw many years ago comes to mind - I cant remember the name, but I remember that it started out with a group of neighbors eating together at a house and how, when the war broke, they ended up fighting on different sides. I also remember the end of the movie when a female main character showed the destruction and asked if after so many centuries of human life, of humans having sex and babies, talking about "purity of race" was even possible -. That is what I think of whenever I think of one of these countries. And it is crazy that a film is the main basis of my image of a country when I hate that movies and media shape the image people have of Mexico. I have yet to create an independent idea of these countries and your video definitely helps doing that!! Looking forward for part 2 and 3!

YASSSS. I felt exactly the same but in terms of allowing news reports in the 90s to shape my opinion. I guess that's what travel is all about, going somewhere to make up your own mind. I was questioning whether or not mention the wars as I know it's a sensitive subject but that's the honest truth how my preconceptions were formed. When I went to Belgrade, people in the UK were messaging me "omg is it safe" just like they did with Mexico. You don't need me to elaborate on what I said in response! BELGRADE ROCKS

During the 90's the Serbians were cast as villains during the Balkan war in the US and Europe, l guess the Serbs looked at it from their own nationalistic point of view. Tito was a darling of the West because he acted independently of the Soviet Union. Lastly Tesla is enjoying a renaissance in the US, he is getting due recognition for his contributions to the modern electrical system, just imagine the modern world without electricity. It was all propaganda, whole 90s war was a civil conflict with around same number of victims on all 3 sides (Croats-Serbs-Bosniaks) and Western media portrayed it as only Serbs were aggressors and killing all others (not mentioning it was actually Serbs from Croatia and Bosnia protecting their homes, it was not Serbs coming from Serbia to conquere foreign land and ethnicly cleanse), Kosovo was another pure media war, there was never ethnic cleansing of Albanians, it all started with Albanian terrorist groups kidnapping civilians (and selling rheir organs, internationak investigation proved that), killing Serbs (over 3,000 still missing), setting bombs on buses and police cars, so Serbia sent army (as any independent state would do), Albanian terrorist groups were even few months before 1999 Nato bombing of US black lists, Serbian army only fought those armed groups and not civilians. In the end of that bombing 300,000 Serbs were forced out of their homes from Kosovo, and not a single Albanian, so western media made a victim picture of Albanians so US could finish the job of occupation of Serbian land and creating second biggest military base in Europe, it was never about protecting civlians, like its not the case with Iraq, Libya, Afhgan etc, basicaly all US aggression overseas wars.

Serbia and Belgrade have so much to offer and mainstream history doesn’t teach us and the world about it!
If you visit Belgrade, visit LEPENSKI VIR & VINCA near Donji Milanovac & DJERDAP about 165 km or about 2 h drive from Belgrade where you’ll find the location of an oldest civilisation in Europe.
    www.serbia.com/visit-serbia/cultural-attractions/archaeological-sites/lepenski-vir-the-oldest-urban-settlement-in-europe/
They don’t teach the world about that!
Also Serbia’s Belgrade is a home Roman emperor Jovian. 17 Roman Emperors come from Serbia including the very FIRST Roman Emperor, Trajan Decius.
Constantius II was born in Serbian city of NIS.
The bigest number of Roman Emperors wre born in Sermuim or midern day SREMSKA MITROVICA.
    www.serbia.com/visit-serbia/cultural-attractions/archaeological-sites/lepenski-vir-the-oldest-urban-settlement-in-europe/
The mainstream history teaches about this Roman history but it never teaches that most of those Roman Emperors DO COME FROM SERBIA.

But Serbs from Ex-Yugo area consider Serbia as homeland, so same was with Tesla, he left his whole heritage to his niece, who brought it all to Belgrade, although Tesla basically had no connections with this city (except for visiting it).

Those DNA tests might actually be true :) You are an exact copy of my neighbor who is Serbian :D
Regarding Kosovo: Well it is not in UN. And the UN chart 1244 says that Kosovo is Serbian land. So it pretty much boils down to what "powers" recognizes it. Western or Eastern. You can compare it to South and North Ossetia. Russia recognizes it, most of the world doesn't. I'm sure those countries who are influenced by the eastern "media, Culture etc" think of South and North Ossetia as independent, just like random western European country thinks Kosovo is independent.
If we are not going to follow UN charters then we all might just start writing our own borders.
At the end of the day I do not believe neither Russia or the West really care about Kosovo, it's interests and money talking. There are far more people in the world that deserves a country, for example the Kurds. Albanians already got one.

But, Bosnia sustained the most damage and deaths. It was my most favorite and interesting country over there when I visited.
Did you see any Yugo cars? I saw a few when I was there. That's of course where they were made😁

I will just correct your facts: You said: "US and UN" recognized Kosovo as independent, but there is a catch, it is a lie, you have been misinformed. UN officially does not recognize Kosovo as independent country, UN official stand is that Kosovo is a Serbian territory under UN protection (Resolution 1244 is still in power, and it will not be changed without China, Russia consent, and that will happen... never) until conflict is resolves (actually, conflict ended 20 years ago, but it is up to UN to say when it is officially over and what is final result, and because US, Russia and China cannot find same language about anything, it would probably be officially resolved... never). Same situation is with EU: although most members of EU recognized Kosovo as independent country, and you might have impression EU recognize Kosovo, 5 EU members don't (including Spain, which will never do that because it will be giving the green light to Catalonia, Basque etc. for their independence) , so officially, all being decided unanimously in EU, EU as whole doesn't recognize Kosovo as an independent country also. And that is the most difficult situation for Kosovo, because they live surrounded by EU or EU candidates, and to official EU administration their status would always be administratively and officially same as UN's as long there is only one EU country that doesn't recognize them. They felt it already, being unable to get visa liberalization or start any official negotiation with EU for 15 years now, and it would change only when they finally resolve their status with Serbia, which will happen... of course, never, because they say they are independent, and Serbia says they are not, so it is stalemate.
Well, now knowing the official facts, you tell me: is Kosovo independent country, officially unrecognized by 3/4 of main political world powers, and unrecognized by 52% (100 of 193) of UN members?

@@davidostrowski679 Well, it actually is, because GB, amongst other NATO countries, 20 years ago bombed 90 days that Belgrade you are enjoying now (which is, by the way, 500 km away from Kosovo, that they "were defending" from Serbs), and they bombed city center, civil infrastructure etc., and a lot of people died (mostly civilian). It is your place, as GB citizen, to ask your government why no one responsible for that wasn't prosecuted for war crimes. And not just for Serbia, for Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya etc., the list is long, long, long... Turning head to the other side works only temporary. Tomorrow will some new Osama blow up in the air your family, and you would not even know why, or better say because of whom.
