I feel like if Hungry Joker had come out a bit later, when darker supernatural series like JJK and CSM were thriving, it might have been a bigger hit.
Agreed, the time just wasnt right for it
For sure seems like an interesting read
The literal definition of ahead of its time
Darker supernatural manga there already thriving in the Earyl seventies with Devilman later in the 90 with yu yu hakushou and later bleach . both JJK and trash saw man arent dark ether cringy or tash trhought and trough

I didn’t even notice that both Tabata and Horikoshi had manga series on Shonen Jump before Black Clover and MHA, and that they both happened to get cancelled. Crazy to think that if that never happened, we wouldn’t have gotten those 2 big hits.
Barrage was actually in the og script for this video. Full summary and thoughts and everything
@@daskerei You should do a part 2!!
@@Cerri22PG I just might!
@@daskerei yes please, I would love a part 3!
Horikoshi's story is quite interesting, actually. He had 2 series be cancelled by SJ before returning with MHA. For inspiration he used a oneshot he had previously submitted before his second serialization called "My Hero"
Seriously depressed due to Omougadoki Zoo being cancelled, he wanted MHA to be a story of hope and happiness, and that's why we have the series we have today ❤️
Red Spirits author is one of the most dedicated I’ve see as he tried multiple times to get his story Iron Knight published.
I love the fact that Red Sprite is a dieselpunk story, because it gives me a chance to use the word dieselpunk. We need a Dieselpunk Edgerunners to make this genre mainstream. And then, Clockpunk Edgerunners, since Clockwork Planet didn't pop off.
We should all say dieselpunk more often
4:42 I completely disagree. If anything, having the power system revolve around electricity gives the author so much creativity and ingenuity to create characters with different sets of abilities, all tied back to electricity. Obviously there's basic applications like moving really fast or creating electric blasts and attacks, but you could also use it as a magnetism power (as we see), to stimulate the muscles in your body giving you super-strength, manipulate the electromagnetic waves around you to make you invisible, or even disturb the electromagnetic waves inside human's minds to see their thoughts, or even worse, control them
The actual possibilities are limitless, you just gotta be creative with the different uses an electricity power allows you to have
Kinda like how everyones has fire based abilities in fire force but they all use it so differently that they wouldnt even seem fire based if it wasnt explained
Hell DC Comics has a lot of electricity based superhero and supervillains and they used their powers differently than most characters both good and evil. So it isn’t like it’s not impossible just Jump cut it too soon 😅
BRO I LOVED RED SPRITE
Personally, my main gripe with it was having too drastic of a time skip(not the amount of time, just the power boost) where we got an OP main character at the start, where I prefer seeing the character progress with the story. It kinda felt like instant gratification so that we could get kickass fights right away. Aside from that I would've loved to have seen this manga succeed and grow.
I hadn’t even thought of that but I def agree, thanks for watching
It’s probably because the author was doing everything in his power to avoid cancellation
@@Dave102693 That's exactly what it felt like when reading it. I read it after it got cancelled, but if I was reading it during serialization I probably would have been concerned about cancellation
@@Dave102693 which is ironic cuz that's probably what got it canceled.
In my opinion though, it seems like the author just like to do the airship strat and 'politics' part and wants to make it the main selling point. ...which would probably be more long-running cult classic if published in smaller magazine or webtoon, because:
1) Tatsu is too hot headed to be "the strategist" kind of mc, but we skipped his levelling-up arc to be satisfying "the fighter" type of mc as well. I like him more as a 'concept personified' character than 'character' character, but I like him!
2) Due to him recruiting the whole gang during the first couple chapters, we don't really get their chemistry well. Noble intention aside, it made this is more human resource management power than power of friendship (this approach combined with Tatsu's look kinda makes me think if the author was a fan of advance wars' Andy lol). Also that they're fully functioning and cooperating at chapter 3 kinda dismissed the fact that they were untrained slaves just before this.
3) The ship designs look lame, our main ship aside, they are blocky shapes covered by steel sheets.
These factors aside, I like this comic! It got heart!
I hate how aggressive Shonen Jump is with cancelling manga. they should at least let them get to 22-24 chapters. there is so many series that could have been bigger and better with time to flesh out the world and introduce new things. if One Piece ended shortly after meeting Gaimon we wouldn't have the masterpiece of all ages that we do. so many authors never get to prove themselves because they had to end their series before they could.
I fully agree. Honestly if One Piece came out today, and released weekly with the same chapters it might not even make it to Arlong Park unfortunately. Readers/Shueisha prefer the immediate action as opposed to the build up
I don’t even like one piece and I agree. Sometimes the story *needs* a slow burn and time to build up
instant gratification and social media attention span have completely ruined the possibility for long term story flourishing
@@islandboy9381 Nuh uh. No,. We are not doing that. No "modern day attention span" scapegoat BS. By that logic we wouldn't have ANY series that stay popular for long. The much big problem is the cut throatiness of Jump and the lack of breathing time afforded like mentioned above.
while not perfect, I think it's fine that they axe series that don't garner much attention or have high numbers from the jump. sj is the biggest manga magazine with hundreds of aspiring mangaka looking for a shot. it wouldn't make sense for the editors to gamble on a story that has yet to find its focus while also not pulling in any significant numbers. like the thing about your argument is that one piece and naruto and other series that eventually became huge were already hitting their strides after the initial chapter and only hit higher peaks as it went on.
I loved Hungry Joker and legitimately thought it was going to be one of the Big Three at the time. I was heartbroken when it got canceled, and while I was excited to see Tabata come back for Black Clover, it never managed to resonate with me the same way, which has unfortunately hampered my enjoyment of it.
For Golem Hearts, I originally saw the one-shot floating around online and fell in love instantly, so I was over the moon when it was announced to be getting a full serialization. It was pretty different from the one-shot, but it felt like it was building up towards it as a prologue rather than a complete deviation (like what Hungry Joker did with its one-shot).
I've always suspected that these deviations caused a rift between author and audience, like a promise unfulfilled. One-shots are used as a way to test the waters, so if the fans aren't seeing what they expected, it's not too hard to understand why they wouldn't continue to read, even if I think that the final products more than stood on their own.
Wow Hungry Joker seems REALLY good. Maybe Tabata could continue it after he finishes Black Clover.
I think since he's moving Black Clover to a different magazine, I think there's a chance. Maybe not automatically though, because he's already going through some stuff which was the reason why he had to switch magazines
I wish Golem Heart became big I honestly like the idea of the story.
Honestly it just could still be going right now depending on how long it’d be
Sounds like a shounen take on Pinocchio, roughly speaking
Would be cool to see a part 2 of cancelled shonen! Really want to see a youtuber cover Hell Warden Higuma, my personal favorite S.J canceled series. Miss it to this day
Does anyone remember Earthchild and Hunters Guild: Red Hood?
As someone who read most of these as they came out, my main criticism of these works is the apparent need to rush readers into a major conflict right at the beginning. Perhaps Golem Hearts being the one exception here.
It felt like they had no time to develop basic concepts before having to introduce major antagonists and a big villainous organization.
Great video idea. I could watch like a hundred of these what if’s
I really love these kinds of videos looking into series that were cut so early. Great job!
Thank you!
For a first video , u did very well. That’s was genuinely good
if i could bring back any canceled series, it would be Ayashimon. it was SO SICK and they axed it, but now are printing physical volumes and it makes me so mad because it feels hypocritical
This was a very nice and interesting video with great quality to match people like you deserve more subscribers
shonen jump is collapsing tho, all their best mangas are not part of the weekly shonen jump but from jump plus, chainsawman, dandadan, etc.
Yeah they definitely are in a weird spot right now. They need another staple series and fast lol
Even Kaijuu no.8 is from Manga Plus lol
The only actual big series on weekly shonen jump are ending so yeah
They still have Sakamoto days and most of the new ones seem promising. It's just that about 2/3 of their popular series seem to be ending at the same time.
Black clover is moving to monthly shounen jump for its last arc, mha is ending, jjk is ending, and the rest of the popular ones are probably not gonna stay for any longer than another 50 chapters. It's basically just Sakamoto days, one piece, and the new Manga on the main magazine.
Hell looking at the list of manga on the main magazine right now.
Theirs akane banashi, one piece, Sakamoto days, blue box, and the elusive samurai. The rest are either brand new or on their last arcs.
After canceling so many series with so much potential they deserve whatever losses in money and sales that they get
Good video homie. Keep it going and grind until you got the community that appreciates your voice and content
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who watched this, 1000 view milestone feels so unreal :)
About to hit 5k my dude! Good numbers
Your welcome dude
I remember red sprite
Hey man this video was amazing I enjoyed it and hungry joker I enjoyed it it was amazing I wish It continued keep up the good work
keep up the good work. what a good commentary!
Thank you!
Man, when it comes to axed Jump titles, seeing Candy Flurry at the end of the vid reminded me how awesome that series is. The Ice Cream User def is my favorite.
This is a solid first video. I'd love a second part. Perhaps focus on eras of Jump (early 2000s, 90s, etc.)? Or maybe the ones that had serious potential. I def wanna check out Hungry Joker though it seems really cool and it's unfortunate a power system like that will never be fully realized. Also, have you read Sakamoto Days?
Might do a part 2, next vid is already in the works. And it’s on my list, prolly reading soon
Thank you for these amazing recommendations.
Of course, thanks for watching!
This was a great video especially since it was your first one. Ima have to sub
You are highly appreciated my friend
Amazing video. I hope you continue to upload in the future.
Glad you enjoyed it, there’s more on the way
Great video, i hope for next episode of dropped shounen series
Thanks so much!
If you do a part two to this, you definitely need to include stuff like Artist Acro and Barrage
(Artist Acro is from Shonen Sunday, but I still think it needs more love online)
The Hunters Guild: Red Hood was one that I felt bad got canceled. The idea the mangaka had was that the world and creatures were the main focus and clever usage of fairy tales and children stories. So it was suppose to be like a mixture of Monster Hunter and Soul Sacrifice.
I looked into the behind the scenes for the manga and sadly the mangka was given a terrible editor who is infamous of having manga they were in charge of getting canceled. He pushed the mangaka to go in a direction he didn't want and chase trends that were popular.
So it got canceled because it didn't get enough time to breath and was forced to be what it didn't want.
Yeah a lot editors can be really aggressive from what I hear
I agree with you wholeheartedly about The Hunter's Guild: Red Hood. That series needs a second chance!
needed this 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Im glad :)
New sub. Great video!
Hungry joker sounded like a futuristic take on devil fruits
Good video. Commenting for more viewers
Thanks man!
4:57 bro i heard that smoke detector. change them damn batteries
:0
When u were talking about Redsprite having a limited power system I 100% disagree.
Power systems gain depth from limitations the fact all of the powers would be based off of electricity mean I can see tons of interesting uses I mean just look at fire force.
I respect that. I found that aside from a few characters a lot Fire Force abilities started seeming a little dull to me, but I definitely could see like EMPs and stuff later that would be really cool in Red Sprite. Thanks for watching!
@@daskerei I don’t usually comment but I wanna boost ur engagement so more people watch ur content cause the views are criminally low rn
@@scooper7428 Appreciate you so much for that man 🙌 more vids on the way 👀
@@scooper7428 Also have you read these 3? Which one’s your favorite?
@@daskerei I have read a bit of hungry joker in the past but the others are on the list, I’m in the middle of finishing Berserk and Zom-100 rn.
Sucks to see things get Axed before they can do what they want to do
but I love seeing Mangaka come back with what they have learned and make something amazing
Damn all these series sound so cool with great potential! I felt the same about Hunter’s Guild: Red Hood. With just a little structural change it could’ve done wonders
Great job
I loved Red Sprite,Candy Flurry,Doron Dororon, Black Torch, Tokyo Shinobi Squad, Hell Warden Higuma,7th Garden and Ibitsu no Amalgam(Amalgam of Distortion)! It sucks that all of these got cancelled as the action was raw as hell in all of them imo!😢😠😤
hell warden higuma isnt talked about enough
Man thank you for this! Really wish Red Sprite went further 😭
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it!
When it comes to new series in weekly Shonen jump I keep my expectations low and just wait if this series last long or not.
Omg , my jump you had a number 1 with Red sprite. I feel like the series would fit well with Gangan comics. I loved zombie powder i wish kubo could continue it
Red Sprite had the potential of becoming amazing. 😩
Hungry joker was released at the wrong because that shit would be a hit now
I actually read all the series in the thumbnail and more and I miss them all. They all had so much potential it’s a damn shame they got axed
Great video, for me a couple of the series I would've like to have seen continue were "We Never Learn" , "U19", and "Robot x Laserbeam".
Yeah I remember those :(
I love golf and a good golf manga is something I've looked for.
@@thebuddah1253 Same. I wish they would've moved it to a different magazine instead of cancelling it.
@@itzdm0r3 the author is currently making kill blue. Which is a really good manga too. Check it out.
Golem Hearts was my GOAT. Was so sad to see it go cause it had so much potential
Nice first video.
Thank you!
One series I did enjoy, even though it got axed, was Mitsukubi Condor. It was a manga about treasure hunters and thieves. It's power system was entirely weapons based, so it was really exciting whenever they went to a dungeon or attempted to steal from someone as it meant the MCs were gonna add something cool or unique to their arsenal. It really gave me early Fairy Tail/ 7DS vibes, so I was really sad to see it end so prematurely.
Red sprite seems inspired by fire punch
Mmm that’s interesting. Been on my list for a minute still gotta check it out
Red Sprite, Zipman and Doron Dororon were some of my favourites man, really sad they didn't make the cut 😢
Nice video! I gotta check out hungry Joker. I’d bring back Katekyo hitman reborn for sure
There’s been rumors for an anime remake, so I’ve been holding out for that before I start it
Jump canceled so many romcoms... I was traumatized over time, whenever something interesting came up and I discovered it was from jump, I already knew it was going to have an accelerated end or canceled ending.
We can study is one I remember
Hungry joker was one of few manga that was fanslated in my language back in day that only few series had official translations and I didnt knew english. I was so sad when it ended.
That’s crazy I have a video planned regarding fanslations too lol
Actually i heard of all three in the thumbnail and read 1 of em
shhhhhh
I was a big fan of golem heart and was so bummed when it got axed. Bought the red hood manga volumes which was another one that was really getting its legs under it. Was a fan of red sprite too.
I remember golem heart, the one shot was great but after that there was an obvious dip in the story as far as i remember reading it.
Red sprite and golem hearts were some of my favorites. Was angry when they just suddenly ended.
Im glad shaman king went on to other magazines and contines on
Found this after Do Retry got canceled. So upset but now ik how it feels to love a new series but have it end early
Dang, that's on my list of manga I want to read ugh... I might go ahead and read it anyway and enjoy the 19 chapters it lasted for...
I really miss Fabricant 100. It had fantastic art, pretty good pacing, and some dark content. I wish it had gotten just a little more time, but 36 is a crazy amount for a first time creator in jump. I really hope the author makes another series.
Wait what?
Fabricant got axed?
@@alanthieris4447 yeah. It hurt, but the ending was fantastic
Hungry Joker was one of my first experiences with getting into a series to have it cancelled, personally i loved the hell out of the concept and the art was top notch at the time. Wish i coulda seen it go a lil farther but it was a good read none the less.
This vid come out in my recommendation today and it is solid info. What i know about shonen jump, most mangaka will need to appease Jump head editor first who is very strict to the T. The standard always based on dragon balls and etc cause their mindset often about what boys will interest to read. That's why it's hard to insert some psychology stuff but new power, transformation are much easier to get green light. They also reject if the theme are too similar to other current manga . For me, Phantom Seer and Candy Flurry are so much wasted potential by Jump .
its nice to hear your views. so speak well but i wish you would speak up. its not often i need captions or earphones to hear youtubers clearly. dont cancel your channel!
Lmao thank you for the advice. I’m still new to this so I’m experimenting with audio and how to have my voice sound loud with peaking or clipping. Thanks for watching!
5:44
omfg I can't escape the ceiling birds no matter where I go
There are so many unfinished stories and jump and shoving his short-lived manga that we never hear about that you can make a thousand episodes of the show when I guarantee you I would watch all of them.
i loved agravity boys, happy that it at least got a rushed ending ehich made some sense
Good video man, just shuffle multiples bg music for every 4 or 5 minutes
Thanks man. I’d love to but it’s so hard to find good bgm. I spend so long sifting through playlists its not even funny lol
Friendly reminder that before Bleach, there was a manga called Zombie Powder.
You can see a lot of early Bleach’s inspirations were borrowed from Zombie Powder, especially in the design of (sword spirit) Zangetsu
Omg i hungry joker I remember reading when I was young I loved the premise of it
If you do another episode of this, maybe you could include _Ohma Ni Doki Doki_ by the author of author of _Outlaw Star._
I belive i have all of the english shonen jump mags im not shure if its all of them but man i miss looking forward to the next one rading shamin king desert punk ect
I could have seen myself enjoying all of these, especially Red Sprite and Golem Heart. It's kind of funny looking back at Hungry Joker and where we are now. It would have fit pretty well with current series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. I guess after it got cancelled, Tabata chose a safer route and went for a more classic shonen story instead. Then again, I really love Black Clover, so if that hadn't gotten cancelled, he may not have created that series. Still kind of sucks it never really got a fair shake with the modern audience though.
I actually read red sprite and thought it had a pretty solid basis tbh. Was sad to see it get cancelled
Check out Psyren. The authors of Black Clover and Kaiju No. 8 assisted in it. Its basically if Hunger Games mixed with X-Men.
Whoa that’s been on my list for a while cause I heard it was similar to Bleach, but I didn’t even know they were assistants on it that’s crazy
@@daskerei it's only connected to bleach in looks lol
@@digi7650 that’s cool 👌

bro i read hungry joker along time ago, shits good
Ultimo was a grand one had a little love from stan Lee and manga artist of shamen king
What novel did that future diary with cellphones manga went to? I remember it did not like end more like moved from jump to something else.
Yo hungry joker looks really good
Comic boys do this as well, I remember Batwing about an African batman getting the axe despite having better writing than the main series
Yeah I think the Static Shock New 52 run got axed pretty early
katekyo hitman reborn, would've been sooo goated if they didn't cancelled as well
Atleast people know katekyo and atleast it had an actual ending
And most of them were pretty solid....sad shounen don't care abt the West much
I don’t think they don’t care about the West, one of the biggest driving forces behind the One Piece Live Action series is to gain popularity with the Western audience. I think they just drop these new series in the ocean and if they don’t immediately start swimming like Michael Phelps they axe them 🪓
Build king could have been the next toriko, Ayashimon should have been part of the dark 3, and Red hood had nice art and maybe a good concept for it's story.
If Golem hearts were introduced in the early 2000s i feel like it will get serialized longer, the art style and story architype reminds me of that in the era
Yeah I agree
The fact that all these series have better concepts than Kagurabachi is crazy. That just shows how having memes about the series can elevate the series in popularity.
Yeah Kagurabachi literally memed itself into popularity lmao
Hungry joker was really good
i enjoyed both hungry joker and golem heart...i might have come to like red sprite.
I was reading hungry joker when it started
The the short-lived comic series I would bring back is great jacket a lot of crafting and Ironman seinen manga there was not jump😊
Haven’t heard of them, gonna have to check them out. Thanks for watching man!
thank you for speaking for the entirety of humanity as a whole with your title, ive read most of these.
Hungry Joker looks so good wth
Golem Hearts is till one I think about often.....if only it came back
9:43 Hungry Joker sounds like Great Value Toaru majutsu no Index.
I remember manga called demon plan.. I was disappointed when I heard it was cancelled
I miss hungry joker
Hungry Joker and Red Sprite definitely got axed too soon they just started cooking and nothing
My favorite little detail from Golem Hearts is that in the Bible, Lammech was the father of Noah, so clearly the author did a bit of reading.
Oh wow, that I actually didn’t know. Thanks for that
I love this series
