- Gianluca Vialli, the former Italy and Chelsea striker, has died aged 58 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Vialli was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 and then for a second time in 2021, shortly after Italy's Euro 2020 triumph.
He left his role with Italy in December, citing his need to undergo treatment for the disease.

Man. This is awful. It's hard when someone like Pele dies....Someone who was famous before you knew what football was....and indeed someone who has had a full life dies. But when someone who was still relatively young and popular when you were at Uni dies it hits me harder ( personally). I still remember him playing for Chelsea like it was yesterday. Rest in peace.
Same here. Piece of my childhood.
Same here, too. I remember the excitement of Juve winning the UCL in 96. It's a dark day.
Dude Pelé had 82 Vialli 58. That’s tougher this time
What a painful way to start the year. We're still mourning Pele and 2023 hits us with this. I knew he was sick, but I always thought that being the warrior he was, he would pull through. Adieu Vialli. God loves you more than we ever could.
Sinisa Mihajlovic too
Pele was good in a time where players and the game were nowhere near as good as today, so is vastly overrated
@@S-fn3oe Actually, many of the so called innovations we see today had already been invented before Pele's time. The game was a lot physically tougher, the ball was heavier, the pitches were atrocious, there was practically no protection for star players because the game was seen as a blue collar, working man's game. So, no, I don't agree that the likes of Pele, Di Stefano etc.
@@S-fn3oe Seriously, here you want to debate ?
@@justhuy7960 Scumbag like that have recency bias and will always try to discredit the achievements of black players, especially if they're considered one of the greats.
Imagine calling a 3x world cup winner overrated.
What's funny is that Pelé played 130 games against European teams and scored 144 goals against them.
RIP Gianluca. Champion football player and champion especially in life. 🇮🇹🏴
From a United fan, I always loved watching Vialli, scored some great goals everywhere he went and had a fantastic personality.
He will be sorely missed both as a player and gentleman, and condolences to his family.
R.I.P. Mr Vialli.
Too young he was
@@joanofarc708 Yes he was too young. 58 is no age. So very sad.
From a united fan it don't matter what team you support it's irrelevant! Fool! Anyway rip🕊️
@@hustleno-filta5373 Who calling a fool shut up clown

Desperately sad news. He always came across as a lovely guy on all the interviews that I've seen him in. The scene of him hugging Mancini after they had won the Euros will live long in my memory. R.I.P Gianluca.
I just finished watching that one Italy Euro 2020 triumph documentary on Netflix a couple of weeks ago and there was this one scene near the end when this man was giving a speech or something during dinner (i think it was his surprise birthday party), and it was very touching... i'm not a Chelsea nor Italy fan but i can see how Vialli will be remembered dearly by a lot of people, and not just football/Chelsea/Italy etc fans... R.I.P.
Thank u🇮🇹 🏴🏳️ From a Juventus supporter...He was a WONDERFUL MAN
RIP you legend 🕊
Rip baldy pizza guy
RIP Gianlucca. What a player and man.
I remember the time when Chelsea played against my hometown club (Vicenza) in 1998, with Vialli and Zola on the pitch. Glorious era!
RIP Gianluca, ci mancherai.
Greetings from 🇮🇹
Rest In Peace Gianluca Vialli.
You were a fantastic player.
Rest in peace legend. Always be remembered in our hearts. Forever a Chelsea Legend.
My God, this is heartbreaking, I thought he was starting to get better too, RIP legend 🙏🏿
Pancreatic cancer is a death sentence from statistics. There are no case of survivors if I remember well.
@@derekjermain I doubt that’s true because I’m fairly certain Vialli got rid of the cancer fully at a point only for it to come back
@@barry4649 No, it's like I said. Pancreatic cancer is a death sentence 100%. There are no survivors for this type of cancer. 👍🏽
@@derekjermain damn, I’d say it must just be impossible to operate on then maybe
@@barry4649 it's a type that do damage to other organs. It's one of the worsts.
🙏 to his freinds and family.I went to Italia 90 and remember him well from that tournament .Sinncere condolences from a Ipswich fan.
I am a Manchester United and England fan, but i used to love watching 'Football Italia' in the 90s. Juventus was my favourite Serie A team, and Gianluca Vialli; was one of my favorite players. I am really saddened at his loss, especially, at such a young age. Riposare in pace ❤
As a Man Utd Fan you always gave us a great fight. R.I.P Vialli. 🙏🙏
As a Chelsea fan who started following the Premier League in the first Mourinho era I appreciate your work Vialli. R.I.P 2023 is starting on a very sad way.
To be fair, 2023 begins with the death of Pope Benedict XVI. It's such a big pain for the world, especially those who are Roman Catholics. He was a die hard fan for Bayern Munich and even supported Germany NT during the 2006 World Cup.
@@ezraezra2928 I have no idea who Pope is and I definitely do not care but Pele and Vialli made me happy because they played football and cared about people
This is so sad he was a chelsea and Italy’s hero. 😢 he deserve to live longer.
R.I.P Vialla
From an Arsenal fan and a football fan thank you for all the great moments you gave to the Premiership and to football in general.
There are some players who no matter which team you support and who they play for you can't dislike them even if you try and Vialli was one of those players in my opinion.
He would've been fine if he played for a real team like LIVERPOOOOOOOL
@@S-fn3oe This is not the time nor place but I think you misspelled Arsenal. 😆
@@S-fn3oe still waiting for you to mention the real team u said...
@@S-fn3oe Shame on you what a stupid comment
As a Tottenham fan I completely agree with you. Vialli is in that class of footballers that was a kind, quietly spoken gentleman and like Gianfranco Zola and Ray Wilkins (RIP) it didn't matter who they played for they were liked universally. RIP Gianluca.
Had the opportunity to meet him in 2008 lovely guy rest in peace 🙏
Top Top Player and a Gentleman first and foremost. I was fortunate to see him play live once at Leicester many years ago when he was at Chelsea. He was strong and skillful. One of the first players sadly leaving us for those of that generation growing up in the 1990s and remember Football Italia on Channel 4 and World Cup Italy 90. RIP Luca.
My first real football idol in the late 80s, when I was a teen.....his goal for Italy versus Spain at the Euros '88 was his best and greatest moment for the national team....unfortunately he didn't achieve much more as a player at international level, but did at club level....and of course helping Mancini to win Euro 2020 was awesome 🙂 RIP Gianluca
What a Player... What a Manager... A True Leader 🙏
Very sorry to hear about the passing of the Juventus, Chelsea and Azzurri legend because of disgusting cancer. RIP legend. Condolences to his family.😥
Luca was one of my favourite players, when I first starting watching football as young kid. R.I.P

well put. Condolences for your father, he raised you well if you can say kind words like that about a rival.
Sad news. I remember him well at Chelsea. That Chelsea were very entertaining to watch with the likes of Vialli, Zola, Di Matteo & Petrescu.
Last night I just watched a video called ''Top 10 Serie A Strikers in the 90s'', Vialli was there too, then I woke up this morning and saw this news, such a sad day for world of football, especially for Italy and Chelsea fans, RIP Gianluca

My dad has pancreatic cancer and the treatment has been very tough, we as men need to be fully aware of this type of cancer because if we are not careful it can catch up with us unaware , may God and Our Lady help us because it will have been far too late, we need to be better aware and check ourselves better because life is short to have regrets, God Bless Vialli my heart goes out to his friends and family, please God 🙏 they will be healed 🙏 from the his death, 58 is very young to die, God Bless you Vialli today you are with an Army of greats gone before their time.

What a player for Sampdoria and Chelsea RIP
You forgot something dumbass. He won champions don't you know? And his team was? Chelsea is the less important among the three. First come Samp and after Juventus.
I literally just finished ‘Azzuri: Road to Wembley’ documentary and they had celebrated his 57 birthday on the run. Wow, rest in piece.
One of football’s good guys.
Rest easy Luca, you were a true legend of the game.
