- Graeme Souness has described his former team-mate Gianluca Vialli as a 'warm, caring soul', following his sad passing at the age of 58.
Gianluca Vialli, the former Italy and Chelsea striker, has died aged 58 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Vialli was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 and then for a second time in 2021, shortly after Italy's Euro 2020 triumph.
He left his role with Italy in December, citing his need to undergo treatment for the disease.

When a warrior like Souness breaks down, you know the man he speaks of was extraordinary. RIP and Thank You Gianluca. Thank You Graeme.
It hits to see a tough man like Souness bursting up in tears. That proves how Gianluca was beloved.
First of all I'm a QPR supporter, I worked in Peter Jones, Department Store Slone Square, where I meet Gianluca many of times in the 90s and I can honesty say he was such a Great person. Always smiling chatting to people, and he didn't mind waiting to be serviced, always had a smile on his face. A true Gentleman and I always asked him please sign for QPR! his response was with a smile on his face was "I want to be at the Bridge to Fish!!!!! RIP Gianluca Vialli
You can see Graeme is very upset and quite frankly so am I. Gianluca came across as a really nice guy. I'm just so sad he's passed away. Chelsea were so lucky to have him as a player and manager and he's definitely one of their greats. Gianluca Vialli rest in peace from a Liverpool fan, a football fan and human being. You were one of the best.
As a Man Utd fan may he rest in peace excellent tribute by Souness
Souness could have talked football but chose to talk about the man. His personality and his caring side comes through on so many peoples tributes.
A lovely guy
Vialli clearly touched many lives...everyone I've seen so far talk about him...everyone seems clearly upset. RIP Vialli...I'm glad i spent my life savings to go watch you play at the Bridge against Everton in the mid 90s.
I am a Sampdoria fan.
Greame Souness was my favorite player with Pietro Vierchowod.
When he came in our team, after Liam Brady, we start winning trophies (First Coppa Italia in our history).
So it's beautiful to see him again.
Love from Italy 🇮🇹
💙🤍❤️🖤🤍💙
Gianluca Vialli R. I .P
Many thanks dear Graeme. Great player, great friends of us, you'll always be a Sampdoria star
RIP Gianluca Vialli you will be sorely missed.
I am an Arsenal fan but I loved Vialli, I always remember the incredible 4-2 game against Liverpool in the FA Cup and going crazy when Vialli scored. What I loved most about him was he always played football the best way... with a smile on his face.
Some players play with unhappy looks, Costa is a good example, most are probably enjoying it though.
@@alexbowman7582 It's why Arsenal are doing so well now, they all look like they are really enjoying it and that's radiating itself to the fans. The club has a smile on it's face. Costa is just Costa. 😁
I was at that 4-2 comeback, one of the greatest home games ive ever seen. Had season tickets for all the 90s, Luca made them worth every penny, a joy to watch. RIP Vialli
RIP Vialli , remember him from watching serie A on c4 when I was a kid , great striker .🏴🇬🇧
100% genuine good guy who just happened to be a brilliant player too, taken far too soon and will sorely missed by thousands. RIP
Rip Vialli, Chelsea legend and Italian gentleman. 😪
In the mid 90s i bought a T-shirt from the local outdoor markets with a printed picture of Vialli. I was not a keen football fan however I wore it to school during non uniform days and slowly started to appreciate the sport and him. It's crazy how memories come flooding back on hearing a name from your childhood.
I've never seen footballers so upset says alot about the man ♥️
R.I.P. Gianluca 🕊
Wow shocked that he's gone even as a United fan, I vividly remember him in the 90's Chelsea team alongside Zola, Hasselbaink, Flo, Le Saux etc. Rip lad.
He broke the seriousness of a proud dour Scot, says it all, RIP you handsome man!!
The reason I watched seria A on Sunday mornings .RIP
I cried so much this morning, I love you Gianluca, in my heart forever so many times watched you live, met you, you was so nice to us we travelled the world watching our national team. ❤️I love you forever. Riposa in pace nei nostri cuori per sempre
One true legend 😢😢😢😢😢 I remember when he scored the winning penalty against Ajax top man and a top baller rip vialli xxx
Graeme and Gianluca are both legends...what a nice tribute.
God bless them both.
Lcfc fan 🦊
RIP. Never played for 'my' team but always respected and appreciated the talent and enthusiasm. That goal vs Schmeichel will last forever.
You will always be remembered at Watford
Wonderful stories, RIP to a great player
Really sad news. A class, class player - and seemed like a truly nice guy. For some reason, the 1997 Tromso v Chelsea CWC game in the Arctic came to my mind. Any conditions, this guy has the poise and balance on the pitch. Many condolences to his family and friends.
Yeah I remember that when they played on the snow. Pretty sure Vialli scored that day.
haha, judging by the reports I read of that match at the time, penguins would have been happily at home on the pitch. Some pampered bores in the media called for the game to be moved to a neutral venue because of the weather, but that would have been robbing Tromso and their supporters of the chance to see top European competition first hand, and full credit to Chelsea and UEFA for not listening to those pleas and getting the game played where it was meant to be.
RIP to great Luca Vialli, you wont find a fan anywhere that wasnt charmed by his talent and charisma🇮🇹
I’m absolutely shocked and saddened by the sad death of gianluca what a great gentleman and legend my thoughts are with his family friends and with Chelsea FC he was a manager I wanted at Newcastle I hope the football world pays an appropriate tribute
I'm shocked too. I had no idea he was ill. He was the same age as me. RIP the Gentleman of Cremona.
Miss him so much , RIP Vialli 🇮🇹
❤ from Indonesia 🇮🇩
SAMPDORIA, JUVENTUS, CHELSEA true Legend
Great football player. He will be sadly missed. Thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP
As a Leeds fan I loved vialli as a footballer and manager when at Chelsea may he R.I.P.,
credit to Sky for not putting adverts on this
RIP Legend. For me, he defined the moment the Premier League hit the big time! He was star quality, and came across as a real nice bloke too. Sadly missed!
Yes,he was among that intake of players that, the the summer of 1995 onwards, launched its golden era.
No matter who you supported everyone loved Luca, and everyone would have loved him to play for their team, Chelsea, sampdoria and juventus were very lucky, and the world is a poorer place without this lovely guy around
Rest in peace Vialli. What an absolute legend! You will always be remembered in world football as world class ❤️
I remember him playing in a very talented Italy squad in the 1990 World Cup. It was funny seeing older footage of him on the BBC just now, from when he still had hair!
Thank you for contributing to my early footballing memories in a game I've gone on to love, such a lovely player on the ball and seemed a genuinely nice man in any media appearances, RIP to him
I loved Italian football during this period , another true personality gone ❤🇬🇧
What a legend ,will sadly be missed ❤️❤️
What a truely lovely tribute. As from others aswell.
A truely great player and gentlemen - dont make them like him anymore.
A great loss to Italy and the football community
What lovely memories! Thanks for sharing Graeme.
Truly sad loss of a genuine genius of a player, sad day indeed
RIP, I really enjoyed his talent in football and totally committed in any game. Remember his time in the world cup and Sampdoria.
Sadly we'll miss you....R•I•P legend!💔💔💘
Very sad , loved and respected by all
The shaving foam story had me in tears of laughter and emotion .
RIP GIANLUCA 🇮🇹 🥅 ⚽️
Brilliant player but most of all a lovely amazing personality that would light up a room. R.i.p beautiful man
Well done Graeme Souness some kind words for a great man and a great friend of yours-from a man utd fan
i can never forget going to london in 97 being a juve fan
seeing him at Chelsea with Zola and di Matteo
they said italian players could'nt handle the pressure in the premier league but how wrong
they brought real passion to Chelsea and made me proud to be italian
it was a wonderful period and i think the Chelsea fans of the 90's will never forget
RIP VIALLI !!🤧
What is your opinion on Chelsea as a club
Sad news great striker RIP Gianluca 🙏
Vialli, before 2 b a great player, was a real Gentleman ... RIP champion
Souness trying to hold it together shows what a loss this is
When we won the euro I was happy for him because we knew he would have gone soon.
Ciao Vialli
Beautiful man and player. RIP Luca
R.I.P to Gianluca respect from a Leeds United supporter 🦚🇮🇨🤝🏐🕊️
R.I.P. Luca.
Touching tribute
RIP GV. A legend.
❤️🙏✨️ Grazie ❤️🙏Souness x il commovente ricordo per Gianluca
Thank you Vialli for the great memories
This makes me sad. I remember he was such an icon in the best days of the premier league during the late 90s early 2000s at Chelsea. Remember his reaction when Chelsea smashed Manchester United 5-0 at Stamford bridge and the 4-0 opener against Sunderland. What a bloke. Brilliant player as well. Sadly no one will replace these great footballers. Just a bunch of love island fairies who just play for money and fame these days.
Spot on. The current players haven’t a patch on players like Vialli. You will find some better than him maybe, but they won’t have the passion and character to match
@@philbrainy2399 they played football for footballs sake. Gazza, Shearer, Keane, Zola, wise, Vieira they all stood out.
@@adammac4960 Yep. More personality, more loyalty. Thiago Silva maybe a rare player of today who might resemble something of those guys
RIP Vialli, even though I am Gunner from Thailand since 1995, but you are one of the best Chelsea player, who I respect.
That just describes Luca to a T really, a nice cheeky chappy, but an amazing player and an even bigger and better human being, such a sad, sad news hearing that he's passed away, a great loss not just for Italy, but the entire world, not only football world, in general. R.I.P. Vialli 9 hopefully you'll find some peace now wherever you are. 😌
Vialli was manager of Chelsea when I got into football. I loved that team.
God bless you Gianluca.
Respect Mr Jianluca Legend italian football⚽🇮🇹
God bless Vialli, from an Arsenal fan. 🙏
Great Viallli RIP legend
Rip Gianluca Vialli
Rip Vialli😢
Rip Gianluca 🙏🕊
*Amazing player, scored some amazing goals. Wasn't he from a very wealthy family and could have done, been anything? But all he wanted was to play football and make people happy, laugh! Pele will be getting the shaving foam shoe soon! Rest in peace, Gianluca, you will be remembered forever by football fans!*
Great player /manager true Italian giant of the game will be missed .By any true football fan . League and non league. 🇬🇧 🇮🇹
Sad news what great player back when it was Italian football in the early 90 rip will be missed
Heartbreakingly sad
Rip Great Men Gianluca Vialli

He was one of those few footballers who was liked by ALL fans. A wonderful player and person. A pity that some of those wonderful qualities he possessed never rubbed off on Souness. RIP Gianluca 🙏🙏🇮🇹🇮🇹

Uomo e Campione inestimabile ❤️
Lo hanno accolto con tutti gli onori in Italia, e lui ha trattato male De Zerbi.

Mad as a button but such a legend.
I have to say as a United Fan all my life , Souness Never a fan as a player , Manager or as a pundit . I thought Souness comments about Vialli were wonderful Much respectful statement praising to be applauded… Si10
