These are exciting times for pen and ink lovers in general and Sulekha fanatics in particular. The Swadeshi brand has launched several new inks and accessories, consistently over the last couple of months and I thought that it would be a good thing to present some of them to you in one comprehensive video.
The flagging-off event was the launch of the Gama ink which was created on request from Gem and Company, makers of the fabled Gama pens from Chennai. This blue ink, in a hue specified by Pratap Kumar of Gama, one of the most revered names in the industry - a man who has been supplying pen and inks to successive Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and has an enviable fan following in the fountain pen fraternity.
This was followed by the launch of the Abeg series of inks dedicated to the Three Giants of Indian football - Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan Sporting. Inks representing the club colours? This surely is a first of its kind, in India, if not in the world! The inks were done to commemorate the anniversary of the Sports Journalist Club of India and was launched by the Secretaries of the Three Clubs, coming together , in itself a rare feat.
Sandip Ray, the illustrious son of the legend, Satyajit Ray, launched the ink dedicated to the Master as part of Sulekha’s Shraddhanjali series of inks. This unique Blue-Black, which leans more towards the blue and has a suppressed red tint, it is said, is what the great Master had wanted. It will not be out of place to mention here that the original Blue-Black ink from Sulekha was a favourite of Satyajit Ray and he had featured it in many of his works, across mediums.
Jamini Roy is another icon who is being represented by Sulekha. Six of the Seven colours (the seventh being white) that constituted his palette have been launched. The colours representing the different shades of Bengal have names that match the rustic charm, with the packaging featuring paintings of the artist. The packaging is worth a special mention as not only has Sulekha broken the traditional norm in the design and layout but the sensitive use of images - and the way they have been related to the colours of the inks - has taken it to an altogether higher level. The jute bag that has been designed to house this ink set, too, is a treat for the eye of the beholder.
This video was shot during the peak period of the Kolkata International Book Fair. The launch of the Banga Lipi notebooks is not covered as I feel that it deserves a story of its own. Talking of the Book Fair, it was another roaring success. Footfalls to the Sulekha stall - often bordering on a stampede - were huge, as were the sales. And this, even though an unusual chill, two days of rain, an unforeseen shutdown (due to reasons political) and the fact that being the fag end of the month when many genuine buyers were financially challenged, could not dampen the spirit of the connoisseurs. Notable, and extremely encouraging, was the spirited presence of youngsters, who just couldn’t have enough of the experience - of pen and ink.
As Kaushik Maitra, the MD of Sulekha pointed out, Sulekha is not merely trying to sell inks - her mission is to bring back those glory days of the fountain pen and ink; to foster creativity in all its forms; to encourage our children to write, and to provide them with a sustainable option, not only from the point of being ecofriendly, but also as a tool against the digital damnation of their lives.
Beautiful shades of inks. I'm in MP, and it is very rare to find Sulekha products here in brick and mortar shops.
where are you located sir? they ship all over india and to some select countries. problem is, shipping ink is a real pain. the costs are prohibitively expensive and on top of it, most services refuse to carry liquids...

Yellow ink colour is really different and good. Very few yellow colours in ink are attractive. This one is really eye catching.

its an incredible effort on behalf of the company. Sulekha is at present competing successfully with many imported ink brands. feel deeply proud as a Bangali. (just a suggestion, if i may, please put up more pictures of sample writings and swatches on paper apart from pictures of ink bottles on your website. that is where people look for maximum info about your ink)

খুব ইচ্ছে ছিল সব কটা নেওয়ার কিন্তু দাম অত্যন্ত বেশি। অন্তত আমার বাজেট অনুযায়ী। আমাদের স্বাধীন ঠিক আছে। 🙂 দেখাযাক আগামীদিনে কি হয়।

সুন্দর ভিডিও,দেখে কিনতে মন হচ্ছে।কিন্তু
যামিনী রায় সিরিজ এর দাম টা অনেকটা বেশি। তাও যদি 60 ml থাকত,কিম্বা পার্মানেন্ট কালি হত,তাহলে মানা যেত।
i had taken up the matter with the company. they informed me that almost half the price goes to dealers as margins. then there is gst and other taxes. the bottles have to be sourced from outside the state. packaging, printing, designing cost of raw materials, manpower, transportation - have all gone up, leaving the company, with very little room for a price revision :(
I would be more convinced if Sulekha said that the cost is because they are producing superior quality inks with costly ingredients. Because dealer-margin, packaging cost, etc are there for all companies. Waterman 50 ml 500rs, pilot 30ml 360rs, quinck 30ml 90rs... how are they managing the price?
sir, all valid points. but the company has shown me detailed break up of their prices, which just dont add up. as for the quality, the company insists that the ingredients they use are among the best available, that there is no compromise on the quality. i guess it is now for the market to decide :)
Chawm sir, your videos are very good and informative..... but just one request - if you could mention the prices of Inks or pens shown or reviewed in the video it would be very helpful for us...... if not the exact price then even mentioning the price range would help......

I bought both Satyajit and Gama ink.
Feedbacks are
Satyajit ink - the bottle is the copycat of Syahi ink. The ink colour is not a true blue black as shown in the box
Gama ink - its almost same as sulekha royal blue
Can you suggest me some water resistant inks...
