  • I started learning Tai Chi last year and really like it! It is a great exercise for me. I am also a fan of Avatar. Since water bending is inspired by Tai Chi, I made this video to show the correlation between water bending scene and the Tai Chi form I learnt. I hope you find it interesting.

Yep, it's also used for self-defence and has its disadvantages.

One of the most primitive names for Tai Chi was Chang Quan (长拳)*.
And an early Tai Chi treatise explained the name this way: 长拳者,如长江大海,涛涛不绝也!
("The long fist, like the long river and great sea, a neverending torrent!")
So yeah, right from the start, Tai Chi was associated with the might of water. :)
*The connection between ancient Tai Chi and other Chinese martial arts styles also labelled as "long fist" is uncertain.
Some of these other "styles" are modern syntheses, made for Wushu training curricula.
The really old ones might have influenced or been influenced by Tai Chi.
e.g. some of the move names in Qi Ji Guang (戚继光)'s style also appear in Tai Chi.
Either way, afaik, Tai Chi is the only MA tradition in which the name "long fist" is given a philosophical explanation
(instead of just simply punching really far, lol)

I've been benefitting from Tai Chi a lot lately for my Functional neurological disorder. I was hoping to get my son into it to help him manage his feelings and this was 💯 the video I had in mind!

Totally Awesome, absolutely loved it, also there are more minor martial art's in ATLA. ie. Kyoshi warriors, May, Tye Lee, etc
including Toph's earthbending style which is (Prey Mantis Style)

So the actual correspondence is: Earthbending -> Southern Shaolin :)
(Hung Ga and Toph's variant of Praying Mantis Style being both associated with Southern Shaolin, from what I understand)
