- On Nov. 21, 2019, crews removed the final piece of the Alaskan Way Viaduct from a hillside just north of Pike Place Market. This video uses drone footage to showcase the dramatic transformation that took place as crews removed the concrete highway that carried State Route 99 through downtown Seattle.
Such a great improvement. That’s cool to see the coastal bluffs.
Even as a Seattleite, it's super frustrating that the "before" and "after" are still completely different angles a lot of the time. At 1:00 the "before" is a full 30 or 40 yards difference from the "after" shot. Look at the placement of the small bridge over the gully! Much more difficult to keep your bearings in a space that is already massively changed :)
That being said, it's crazy that this was done in a year!
Scott Beddall I also came into the comments to say the same thing. The moving shot of the waterfront wasn’t even at the same angle.
@WADOT go back and reshoot the after images at the same angles. This video isn’t anywhere near as useful as it could or should be.
One additional thought on this, they should’ve had a goal to have the same building on the same sides of the frame for the comparisons. It would’ve helped us keep our bearings.
It's amazing to see those coastal bluffs finally free from being cast in shadow for so long. They look real nice. The waterfront looks lovely as well, like the city has finally begun to re-connected with its maritime past. It looks like more of a city now than ever before.
It's a shell of what it once was. Was a great place to grow up. It's lost all of its soul.
@@robertjohnson1609 whatever. The road was old and not up to current earthquake codes. Something needed to be done and getting that eyesore of an elevated highway out of the way is the best thing to return it to as close to possible as it naturally once was.
@@TravKidd it could have retrofitted for a fraction of the cost of the tunnel. But more importantly it was part of the soul of a once great city. It was a great view to be enjoyed by all who drove it.
Just so amazing.
Wow! What a transformation. It looks incredible
Definitely an improvement. They should have made it into a park with trees, with biking and jogging lanes, like Lincoln park in Chicago.
Best show in town this year by far
This is a very COOL video! I bookmarked it so I can watch it over and over. So long viaduct, hello beautiful tunnel!
There's a whole bunch of commercial property that increased in value with the viaduct gone...
Wow this makes me want to visit Seattle :)
Awesome job!
Thank you for this informative video, I really appreciate it!
After driving that viaduct from White Center to work at Northlake Shipyard on Lake Union every day to work with my old man from my mid teens to mid 20s I had mixed feeling about it being ripped out. This video makes me feel a lot better about how it's cleaning up the Seattle waterfront look. I still seriously hate that ridiculous wheel though.
I love how this project had crew to work on it so fast yet years later, Tacoma I-5 is still NOT FINISHED
It was ugly and in the way, but the views driving north on the upper deck were to die for. I had to relocate out of the city a few years before the project started but was back for a visit in Jan '20 - there is/was much still to do, but the change was remarkable.
What a difference. Like San Francisco & Boston before it.
That viaduct was an eyesore! Glad to see it go. will majorly increase property values and tourism on the waterfront
for the chinese and californian programmers
That is one of the problems... Government officials were in the pockets of the developers. The citizens of the city get to pay for the building of a tunnel that is way over budget and years late. The politicians and developers make a boatload of money from the deal.
Atrocious!
This should be implemented across the country really
you paying for it?
@@jakuub_11 Taxpayers are, just like everywhere else. The govt uses taxes for infrastructure, that’s how it’s always worked.
@@luuchoo93 Yeah? So let me get this straight. You want every single elevated highway in the country to be converted to a tunnel? It took 24 billion dollars to do a 1 mile long section in Boston. With the current tax budget, its not possible to do this everywhere. Unless you want your taxes to quadruple...
@@jakuub_11 I never talked about “every elevated highway”, but those blocking or cutting through central areas/waterfronts/historic districts. The Boston Big Dig was a great infrastructure plan, and the same goes for the Alaska Viaduct in Seattle. Both cities look a lot nicer today. Cities are not supposed to be functional but hideous...
*0:18* Whomever has an office right here, has finally hit the damn lottery!!!!
Last remaining coastal bluff in Seattle. 😧
*downtown Seattle. There’s others around the city.
@@arandomperson3516 go to Golden Gardens, Carkeek or Discovery Park and you'll find plenty of coastal bluffs
0:07 what are those yellow stacks i seen them around the city?
I could be wrong, but I believe they are fans to vent the tunnel
@@congoose100 Yup...
Amazing they can build that so quick and take down. Too bad we can't do the same thing with the north-south freeway in Spokane. 25 years and there's not even a downtown in the way LOL
Nice work
Good lord it looks so much better
I am not from Seattle. What was the viaduct ? Was it just a freeway ?? Did they replace it with a tunnel ???
Yes, it was a highway that ran near the Seattle waterfront. It was replaced by a tunnel.
@@wsdot Thanks
Awesome 👏🏼 the old one looked really ugly
Well Done!
part of me will always miss the strange ugliness of the viaduct
Yeah, that with the old warehouses and WWII era office buildings gave it that patina of an old industrial port city. I was sad when the project started but the results are coming along nicely.
Aloha🤙🏽
Dope
0:22 From people in Seattle, Does the area actually look this nice? Are the people great? This shot just reminds me of Manhattan !
looks nice only during day. nighttime there are tons of homeless and junkies, and a shit ton of drunkards and gang activity
@@dubloonseven2239 Yea I seen this documentary on CZcams about how Seattle is going down hill with all the homeless and Tent communities near the Bypasses ): It's sad, I hope the Area becomes reformed, I'd love to visit
@@razzerraw1108 Honestly, I think most of downtown looks better than that shot.
@@razzerraw1108 The problem is the politicians who have created an environment where drug possession is not enforced. All of the druggies and dealers have come to the city.
Homeless defecate in the streets. I have seen people urinate and cops ignore them.
Dealers sell drugs in front of the cops, because they know nothing will be done.
Seattle used to be a beautiful city. Now, it is becoming a liberal sh!thole...
Golf Nut I’m sorry man ): I’ve only dreamed about the place because I use to watch the show iCarly when I was younger
well done
And I was wondering why in The Last Of Us II I walk on some viaduct along the ocean, since Google Maps does not include any :)
eh i think the freeway looked cool
It was an eyesore and wasn't up to current earthquake codes and was old and not worth re-building. This is really the best thing but I do miss that nice view on the old drive on 99
It was an eye sore! Ugh
Built in the early 50's, they had no sense of taste back then...lol!
Amazing edit? Where did all the homeless and the tents go?
parks and Rvs
We miss you Ducky McViaduct!
i only seen this in SEP 2019 so never saw this ugly double decker freeway in the middle of the city from Australia
Can we cover up the ugly railroad tracks
Sure! All that food, fuel, clothing, furniture, electronics... pretty much every shipping container that comes into the port of Seattle ends up on a train and will now be impossible to distribute though.
@@katiedid27 it's called a tunnel, wow Seattle is such fake drama
@@borgxxxboy I'm betting you have no idea how expensive and impractical that would be.
Build a Viaduct to cover those tracks back up!!
now add 10mil $ condos
The developers should have to pay for the tunnel and viaduct removal!!!
Well, I was just 7 minutes late from being First 🤣
So sad bruh
vary sad
What a boring improvement.
Seattle is pretty ugly in places, even with the viaduct removed.
