  • This video takes you through the process of tobacco seeding, germination, growth and harvesting. Making great cigars starts with planting great seeds. You will see how the seeds are planted and germinated and how the seedlings are prepared to be planted in the field. The process of harvesting (priming) the leaves is also discussed.
    This video is a remastered version of an earlier upload. Much higher quality, some different media and higher resolution stills

    This is the best advice to give because I'm reading about caterpillars munching the leaves before even preparing the ground. Introduce nest boxes for Blue Tits and Great Tits or any other finch family birds basically you have 4m 4 inches square pole place the pole into the ground during winter time feed the finches next to nest boxes and hoping in Spring they will nest in those boxes the birds I mentioned feed on caterpillars so its food for the birds young and the problem solved. For an acre about 12 pillars when it comes to nature there is a solution.

    The hardest part for me has been keeping the seedlings alive from germination till planting outdoors. Since I'm from the northern US tobacco needs to be planted indoors about 1-2 months before planting outdoors as full grown seedling. Over watering the flat one time can cause the loss of a entire flat to dampening off and under watering can cause the loss of an entire flat due to the soil being to dry thus killing the tiny roots. Best of luck to all my fellow smokers and growers.

    i might be 14 years late but was wondering if you've ever encountered this problem. my plants just started growing a week ago they grew pretty fast but slowed down in the last couple days. they now have yellowish tips on the leafs and even some are dead completely and was wondering if you might know the problem if your still around on here or if anyone else knew.

    Virginia is the most common in the US. If you're growing rusitc or Aztec Sweet, try drying and smoking the dried blossoms they are much better tasting and have less nicotine in them. You can also try Havana depending on where you live.

    Thanks great video. I grew a couple test plants last yr and 4 varieties this yr to see which would do the best in my regional conditions and has best disease resistance here. Ony about 100 plants the weather conditions have been terrible for the air curing very rainy and in mid August it hasnt gotton over 75 degrees which is unseasonably cool so many of them have been developing frogs eye any tips on preventing that in cooler than normal conditions or to help in the drying?

      Try a drain and water system from the bottom of your soil, poke holes in each square and put the top of the square box underneath with water, that way, the water will come from the bottom and the roots will become much stronger

    Need more specifics. I don't know of anything about farming practices that would be harmful to farmers, but if I knew more specifics I could look into it.

  • @miopera40
    @miopera40 Před 8 lety +3

    Strongest plant do not produce the best smoking tobacco, today you see a lot of plantations with huge tobacco plants, that doesn't translate in most cases to better tobacco. That works for snuff and mass producimg but not for quality cigars.
    The bigger the plant for a same variety the smaller the flavor, bigger the veins in the leaves, lower the quality. It get to be old timers way to be good for cigars.

    • @miopera40
      @miopera40 Před 8 lety +1

      You see so many prestigious cuban rollers that get into the cigar business overseas and not a single one can match the aroma of the cheapest cuban habano despite growing in similar weather and a lot has to to with the growing part, the soil.
      Non cuban cigars are getting better but grower's families are also needed not just rollers, and quick nefore the tradition is lost which is the way Cuban tobacco is going with the mass production

    In this video, the farmer used sterilized rice shells to cover the seeds and protect them from birds.

      Cigars are for taste, and cigarettes are for breathing in and taking a nicotine effect.

  • @robotsongs
    @robotsongs Před 12 lety

    Nope. I'm growing it right now and caterpillars LOVE the leaf. I'm also finding a fair amount dead bugs stuck to the sappy leaves (I had no idea the green leaves were so sticky and sappy!), so you're kind of misinformed here. I'm not going to use pesticides, but it's definitely an issue.
