As a non smoker , I would grow tobacco plant in my front yard as a symbolic middle finger at the government for the tax they charge. Its your choice to smoke & I don't care. But the price of everything is rediculas these days & most of it is tax.
Thank you. I have been smoking rollies for 5 years been growing my own food and weed as well. Why the heck have I not been growing my own plants . I will be once this lockdown is done.
I am a non smoker who is looking into growing some. It is a tradition to grow it and they have pretty flowers, also tobacco tea sprayed in the garden makes a great organic pesticide.
Larry, I absolutely got to thank you for your frank, informative and well spoken video on growing tobacco. I am a pipe smoker and plan on getting into growing my own tobacco as well, if anything just for the experience. I purchased flue cured tobacco last year and pressed it myself into cakes and it came out great! Now I am going to knock out the middle man and grow the plants myself in 5 gallon buckets. Thanks for the tips
Top bloke Larry. It’s about getting out there and doing it. And you’ve done it. Rather than complaining about the high prices. You’ve found a way around it. 👏. Bravo x
Thank you so much man! I live in Michigan, and I thought for sure we COULDN'T grow this stuff! Because of this video I have taken a major interest in this. My grandparents roll their own and love humming birds. I'm not kidding when I say that they spend hundreds of dollars every year to get them to come to their garden.Thank you so much!
I attempted to grow my own two years ago... and aside from an aphid infestation towards the end(which infested my hot pepper plants, as well), the growing phase was a success. My plants were in semi-shade and ended up about five feet tall. My major issue was finding a way to shred the leaves once cured... not to mention the curing process itself. What I ended up with was fairly harsh, but still smokable. Note: DO NOT use a food processor to try and shred tobacco!
not cigarette smokers here, and am always hoping no one does, but! over the years we smoke and enjoy cigars and pipes. I know, perhaps only minimally better in the amount of bad side effects. Anyway, we had fooled with growing some plants indoors this year. Will be posting an update soon. Yep, when it comes to being self sufficient, that is award winning what you are doing.
My processing method is to take a stack of half leaves removed from the stem, fold over the pointy ends then roll it into a tube. Use scissors to cut the tube up then pull apart the pieces, which will be long thin strips. When it is drier rub it between your fingers so the strips roll up into strands...
One of the best videos on CZcams. I think it is terrible that people are being fleeced by the gov just because they smoke or drink. That isn't freedom. Again, you are a good man.
Great video & thanks for sharing! I smoke a pipe and have found that I go through much more tobacco than I thought I would and ended up going though all the tobacco that I grew in less than three months. Mid way through winter I ended up having to order some. So to those new to the craft of growing...always grow more than you think you will smoke. Once it cures it weighs considerably less than it does green. It's like wine, if cured properly it only gets better with age so you can never grow too much.
Larry, I've really become interested in tobacco for two reasons, first the bartering aspect I don't smoke myself but every other person I know does, and second you mentioned that humming birds love the flowers! I really enjoy watching hummingbirds even though as a child I was terrified of them! They looked like giant "DEATH BEES" to me when I was a kid,LOL! I hope I can get an envelope in the mail by Oct 1st and give this a try! Best Reguards to you AND your brother who I also enjoy.
Great story. Just one suggestion - before you 'shred' the leaf, you should construct a device to slide each leaf across a stainless tray and against a thin blade. Removing the large vein will get the 'bark' out. Tobacco is a labor intense endeavor. But, the best end product will come from the amount of care given. From cover crop in fall to next years' harvest, always something to do. By the way, we 'prime' our leaves on trimmer string using a leather needle. When tobacco is cured, stems will be very dry. We typically artificially bring it in 'order' so leaf will be supple. Simple then to shave leaf from stem. Eliminate extra wood.
I'm in the state where if I don't have a job I can in the very least grow my own. With Menthol becoming illegal I'm going to grow my own Menthol blend with spearmint. Plus if worst comes to worse it can be barter in shtf scenario. Thanks for the little nuggets.
I hate smoking but have always raised tobacco in the garden. It's a beautiful tropical plant that flowers. It is also a medicine, It seems to control pain and itching. Also the rustica variety makes an effective insecticide. Once I used a loader tire as a pot to grow tobacco in. Smoking damages your body but my theory is that growing it in non-radioactive soil reduces cancer risk.
Great video and information I’m going to order some seeds and start playing around with some. Never smoked tobacco but sounds interesting. I love growing new types of plants.
Larry I don't smoke but I raise a few plants in my garden for the beautiful flowers that bring humming birds and bees. You are right about if worst comes to us in USA we can trade tobacco. I told my daughter have some coffee also on hand even if you don't drink the stuff . Its good to trade. There is always call for tobacco. And nothing is added . Nice video!!
I am a non-smoker too, but like your friend I have decided that tobacco will be as good as gold in the economic crisis that is coming. I've got a non-electric rolling machine, ordered tobacco seeds, seedling trays, etc. What kind of tobacco are you growing, is it for cigs?
Great freaking video man!! ill tell ya.. i smoke black&milds and now since I got your seeds and is growing one already at my home, those cigarettes i buy in the store will no longer be in my hands. Home grown is definitely the best way out. Thanks for sharing
Great video, Larry. I'm not a smoker but have friend that do and I will tell them to check your video out. My brother adopted and adapted your gutter growing system and has a system set up in the basement. With LED UFO lighting the plants are doing great. Peppers blooming and tomatoes fruiting!
I just heard this morning that big brother is going to raise the tax $1.95 per pack soon. Larry, I'm in! Put my 3 bucks in the mail this morning. I just hope I don't have a problem with MI over getting tobacco seeds in the mail. Our delightful state government has made it against the law to send or receive tobacco products through the mail. Love your videos!
Those plants look great! I have thought about raising my own tobacco but I live in an apartment. I could grow a couple indoors, I have read online that it will work but not be as good as outdoors, but there is too much money involved with all the lights and the power bill will go up I'm sure and certain people may think I'm growing something else. But your plants look great and I applaud your efforts good sir.
Great vid, Larry! I got into the same for hobby at first around '06, as a curiosity into the cigar making process. Now I get my seeds out every spring and the garden gets a little bigger every year. =D Only problem is that Texas summer and the lousy soil, but the fix was growing earlier and using rain buckets liberally. I found a great source few years ago with tons of great info on a cuban site about dark tobacco. I saved the pages but the site is gone now. Great hobby and a better money saver!
Thanks for the video I don't smoke tobacco I like to smoke weed so I'm attempting to grow tobacco this year and use the leaves to roll my weed in. We'll see how it goes if not it's good barter
Fantastic videos you have done on how to grow tobacco. I also took a look at your sub irrigation systems like the rain gutter, hybrid and kiddie pool. I am curious, can you grow tobacco with the sub irrigation or does tobacco like dry feet?
I've watched a few of your videos before. I congratulate you for your work. I am a pipe smoker. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find pipe tobacco in the country where I am. and that's why I have been struggling to grow my own tobacco for 2 years. But I could not control the fermentation process. My tobaccos that I grew before then either had a very bad taste or got mold. There was a small amount of golden virginia and golden burley tobaccos left from this year's harvest. I started to keep them in a small refrigerator at 30 degrees Celsius in a glass jar 2 days ago. How to make burley and virginia fermented pipe tobacco. I guess they are not much different from smoking tobacco. Can you help with this. Maybe you can prepare a video for the post curing process.
Interesting video! I'm no longer a smoker but growing up I was. I'm originally from Virginia and my mother worked in a cigarette factory for 20 years used to tell us if we knew what went in them we wouldn't smoke them so kudos to you for growing your own! I want a video on how you roll them! I take it they are filterless?
Great video! The way things are goin we all better start "growin' our own". I'm a pipe smoker only, & I have a bad feeling that due to the relabeling of the RYO stuff as "pipe" tobacco- pretty soon real pipe smokers are gonna get hit with the ridiculous cigarette style taxes. Good grief.
Ha! In Australia up to $38 a pack!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND NOW! Obviously black market tobacco good video will be growing my own it’s legal here it’s also legal to make shine
Grows 7 feet tall pretty cramped for an apartment! use the search bar on my channel and type tobacco you will see all my video's on how to raise tobacco!
excellent video Larry, I´m smoker too and i believe this is an awesome alternative for those who don't wanna pay for expensive cigarettes anymore, thanks for sharing...
People should grow their own tobacco, and hand roll their own cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco. It is an act of revolution against ridiculous government taxation and giant corporate monopolies. I don't smoke. I quit 12 years ago. I'm growing to sell.
thank you larry for the great video this is something I've been contemplating myself as I am an avid pipe smoker and dad at cigar smoker I don't know if I wanna try a rolling my own cigar but definitely would probably try a girl in the plant and trading it and smoking it 1 of my pipes I watched a multiple of videos on this on youtube and that is something that is seriously starting to a peak my interest as some of the tobacco spit I purchased are well over 100 dollars a pound .
Hey Larry, I hope I'm not to late to get in on your tobacco seed offer! I just found your video and I will get letter mailed out to you Monday, I also would like to chat with you about canning. I also live in Brainerd. Thanks for offer.

Absolutely bro. Government only cares about benefits. I'll buy a house in a countryside and never go back to city.
I just ordered 500 seads for 5.95 on ebay
Non smokers don't need much to be offended that is why I stated that right up front!
Hi are you still alive
Yep. I'd rather have a cigarette in my mouth than a stick up my ass like most nonsmokers. 🤣
@@lionelmessi6857 I think the IRS had him whacked.
Thank you. I have been smoking rollies for 5 years been growing my own food and weed as well. Why the heck have I not been growing my own plants . I will be once this lockdown is done.
I could listen to the timber in your voice all day...velvet smooth
Great story Larry !It is guys like you that make this country great! Thanks for the video and commentary!
Thanks!

Its all organic minus 250 chemicals the tobacco companies add!
That to meis The real reason to grow this plant.
Thank you so much man! I live in Michigan, and I thought for sure we COULDN'T grow this stuff! Because of this video I have taken a major interest in this. Thanks for posting Larry you have a very soothing voice and I like your easy going attitude. Best wishes.
I just added a link below this video on a great way to shred your own tobacco!
Click on the show more button and you will see it!
You are the man Larry! Thanks for your direct, no-nonsense approach. Very informative for sure....

Yes tobacco has many uses besides just smoking it! the hummingbirds love the flowers!
On the prepper front, this makes a lot more sense in 2024 than it did when you aired this video!!!!
You sir, are a real forward thinker!
My processing method is to take a stack of half leaves removed from the stem, fold over the pointy ends then roll it into a tube. Use scissors to cut the tube up then pull apart the pieces, which will be long thin strips. When it is drier rub it between your fingers so the strips roll up into strands...
I live in Canada and I'm inspired to grow here. I also do not smoke but getting a crop of tobacco looks really fun!
I get lots of information that helps me a lot in farming. Thank you so much. We are going to try growing our own tobacco now. GB
1 plant makes a carton of cigs! You do the math!
5 cartons g if you grow well

Yes you are right on! You can bet it won't be long and they will tax pipe tobacco at the same rate! Time to grow your own!!!
Oh yeah. Congrats and I wish you success with the Grow Bag Garden Systems company.
Fantastic videos you have done on how to grow tobacco. I also took a look at your sub irrigation systems like the rain gutter, hybrid and kiddie pool. I am curious, can you grow tobacco with the sub irrigation or does tobacco like dry feet?
Big Thanks Larry ! I too hope/want to grow my own starting next spring. If nothing else to supplement my RYO tobacco that I get online.
All the best !
45 days before last frost best to have grow lights unless you have a sunny spot!

excellent video Larry, I´m smoker too and i believe this is an awesome alternative for those who don't wanna pay for expensive cigarettes anymore, thanks for sharing...
Thanks for offer.

i'm raising my own tobacco (Virginia and Adonis) - seed and transplant - grows without any special needs.
greetz from EU
Yes It does!
Thanks Mr Hall. Great video.
If you could i would like to see more about the diffrents forms of curing,
or which one you find the best.
I like Virginia gold tobacco!
do you mind making a video on the steps of growing for ex: when to plant watering transplant timing and when to take them out to dry (and of course how to hand and dry and cut) I would really appreciate it im a decent gardener and would love to start growing where would I buy my first seeds or plants from? hope you get this and awesome video very inspiring and great points on why grow than buy lbs.
OK Larry thanks for the reply, i have some sort of idea now.
Stole my idea!
I've been thinking that for years but I thought it only grew in semi tropical environments.
If I was still smoking and drinking fucken eh I would be making my own.
I hope more people do this, 10 bucks a pack is insane.
I'm not advocating people smoke, but I'm willing to bet smoking organic tobacco is not going to be near as harmful as the shit their selling now, who knows if its even tobacco.
Ive never smoked before, but just the other day I was wondering if cigarettes were actually not bad for you without all the added chemicals and pesticides. Im to try planting tobacco now and smoke it.
Wow, I just learned a lot!
This stuff germinates super easy
I'm paying about $11/lb. for Big Rock. That includes tax.
Been rolling my own cigs for 20 years. With filter tips & papers a little over a buck a pack.
If I could live on iced tea & cigarettes I'd be too happy. 😁
Jc here in Cali am a non smoker and hate those lil sticks they smell and they are harmful. But you my friend are AWESOME!!!!!!!
Best video I've seen great good and thanks for the info
Cigarette tobacco likes really poor soil, kinda like growing lavender the worse the soil the better the cigarette tobacco. If you use high quality soil and you baby the plants it results in high nicotine, this makes it significantly more harsh to smoke (and mostly intended for cigars) but if conditions are poor it results in a smoother tobacco.
You can also ferment at home by placing the leaves in a wooden box and placing c-claps on the box, it has the same effect as the large piles manufacturers use, the nitrogen in the plant will slowly break it down/decompose while drawing out the remaining water (you want this to a degree). As more of the water leaves the leaf the overall % of sugar increases giving the tobacco a better taste.
Just remember to remove the claps and open the box/re-arranging the leaves every few weeks, you want to get oxygen between the leaves to prevent mold.
Yes you can!!!!!!!!
Virginia Gold is a nice tobacco to raise try eBay you can order seeds there!
Great video champ
I'm an ryo guy and I wanna take it one step further. I'll send my envelope with the 3 bucks gladly. I'm excited to get started.
I know this is an old post but im paying $15.99 for a 1lb bag of gambler and $1.99 for a box of 200 tubes in 2020 I live in IL
I just came across this video. Im very interested in growing my own tobacco. Thank you for the videos. I know it is years later, but would you be willing to make new videos,in case you do anything differently now? Thank yiu
why raise your own tobacco, because whne you grow your own in clean , it has spirit, and you KNOW everything about what you consuming
