  • Doom Eternal on Xbox Series X tested in two modes.
    Balanced Mode: 2160p vs. Ray Tracing Mode: 1800p
    We compared Cutscenes, Texture details, weapons reflection, reflections on surfaces as well as water. You will notice, that the water reflections are way more subtle, in fact next to non existent. We also tested the framerate during combat in both modes.

    Doom is way too fast paced for the player to appreciate things like reflections on the walls and puddles. Some of them look nice but honestly this game already looks bloody amazing to begin with. It’s more about the art style and colour palette for me.

      Wouldn't call it night and day but it's a lot of subtle additions that put all together they bring more realism, we are quite good at faking shadows and reflections (can get quite convincing with SSR+cubemaps), GI is still rather unrefined without RT, probe based GI is static (prebaked) and rough. Q2RTX and MC represent what RT can achieve in a best case scenario, metro exodus and cyberpunk are great examples of what RT can do in a more realistic scenario

      RTX is Nvidea's own solution and ray tracing is general term for the software solution. So the consoles don't have RTX because they don't have Nvidea's card which use Nvidea's RTX technology. saying they are synonymous is like saying Apple's Facetime is equivalent to any other video chatting app, they are technically different & RTX can produce different results but Doom was well optimized and doesn't want to be a super shiny, reflective game so it's less noticeable here than it might be in another game.

    This is the sort of thing where if you play doom eternal all the time, excluding certain obvious situations that show off RTX capabilities, you might notice, but overall it makes me appreciate just how amazing the lighting was to start with. I think for some the FPD dips in intense situations towards the end might not be worth it, but overall this makes the game look fresher if you want to dive back in. otherwise, it's not really going to make a noticeable difference in such a fast paced game, except for a few areas that are very shiny and reflective.

  • @jforce321
    @jforce321 Před 3 lety +3

      @brancolt_ Před 3 lety +1

My brain is used to 240hz now even 144hz looks a bit slow. I got a 144hz side by side next to my 240hz thinking it wouldn't be a big difference and when its side by side I can definitely see the difference. Now 240hz has spoiled my eyes. Anything upclose to the screen you don't see the resolution difference as much but distant detail gets muddied with RT on. Why make a performance test with a LOCKED framerate??? I would have liked to actually see the performance impact.
    Also why show the intro? It shows so few scenes that actually use RTX there. Why not show Cultist Base or any other level with many metal surfaces. THESE are the levels you should show as you can see the most reflections there

    • @wojciechsokoowski5189
      @wojciechsokoowski5189 Před 3 lety

      It's a console version that is being tested, it's not possible to unlock framerate there. The point of performance test is to see if the game holds stable framerate on xsx without any noticable drops.
