      iD tech is extremely well optimized engine. Game has always run buttery smooth on even low end hardware on PC. We need more games with this engine.

      @@teddyholiday8038 vulkan doesn't like older gpu specially card with bellow 4gb vram or only 4gb vram but it scale amazingly well older cpu and idtech is fucking amazing, i wonder how this engine will scale in big open world games specially in ubisoft game lol like watch dogs legion which is one of the worse dx12 port even low level api doesn't save the game

    I'm just glad that we are finally at the point where having multiple settings for performance, visuals, RT is becoming a standard on console.

      I especially hope that 40hz full fidelity mode (as found in Rift Apart) becomes a standard option too. Way better than 30fps and still keep full resolution and full ray tracing.

      @Alex Pare we haven’t seen these studios properly for next gen yet but knowing then they will do great but this game actually shows me next gen power. 1800p 120 FPS should be standard not 1080p. Also this game looks demanding with how fast it is. Every studio should optimize their games like Doom eternal. I don’t think they have too many excuses any more

      @@LogicInWords that makes sense but doom eternal is definitely a demanding game.
      The camera moves so fast and the game is gorgeous!
      I know there’s more realistic looking games which would be more demanding but they should try and optimize the best they can. Unfortunately I don’t think everyone is doing that. I mean look this runs at native 4K at 60 FPS. While other games are running at dynamic 4K. Studios should try just a little bit harder

      @Mr.Buttons Or at least a bi-directional DisplayPort to HDMI 2.1 adapter. They already sell one, but it only works one way (DisplayPort -> HDMI 2.1). It'd be nice if they made one that was either bi-directional or an HDMI 2.1 -> DisplayPort 1.4.

      @Mr.Buttons huh, most 120/144hz monitors have hdmi 2.0 input. 120hz works fine up to 1440p over hdmi 2.0.

      @Mr.Buttons HDMi 2.1 will take over display port I think... The 3000 series Nvidia and the new AMD cards already have HDMi 2.1
      ... As are most current modern higher end monitors.

      @Mr.Buttons normally freesync works just fine over hdmi but the range is often more limited than the display port range.
      Sometimes if a monitor doesn't support 1440p + 120hz + VRR at the same time over HDMI you have to reduce the resolution to 1080p to get both 120hz and VRR.

    I think we can all agree that 2 years ago we never would’ve thought hardware ray tracing to be possible on next gen consoles. The fact that we are getting hardware ray tracing at 60fps speaks to what is possible with a truly sophisticated engine like id Tech. They are wizards over there!!

    This really might be the last time we see id tech on a PlayStation console; the id tech engine itself is really one of the hugest assets Xbox gained from the Bethesda acquisition..

      I strongly believe it won’t be seeing as they have outsourced the engine in the past but I maybe wrong. I know the IW engine made by infinity ward and trayarch is a modified version on ID Tech 3 and has been used even today just with upgrades so who knows, PlayStation still has access to the unreal engine which is just as good if not better than ID Tech 7.

      @@iOSGaming14 true, it could always be outsourced, but that decision is now solely Xbox’s as they have ownership; I think it’s very possible thought that another id tech game will be on PS5; as for UE5, there’s already at least 4 confirmed Unreal engine 5 exclusive games coming for Series X, and Zero for PS5; Aside from days gone (which is now, “Gone”) I don’t think any other PS studios even used Unreal engine, but yeah there’s always that

      @@Beer-Baron whether titles that use the unreal engine comes to the PlayStation was not what I was saying, not trying to turn this into a fanboy argument but I said PlayStation still has access to it, which I believe is a better engine. If those ID tech titles don’t come to my PS5 I always have my gaming laptop and gaming pc which both are faster than the series x admitted I payed premium for the laptop and parts to build my pc but it’s something I enjoy. People can argue what they want but owning a decent PC/Gaming Laptop, PS5 and the Nintendo switch is all you need. No use for Xbox this gen, same as the last. That last good console that the Xbox has made was the 360 regardless of the red ring of death. Game pass accounts for more users in PC than the Xbox and the sales between both series x and ps5 are in the Sony’s favour again more consoles sell more software sold the more money is made. Take Microsoft’s lead in the pc space and have Xbox its own thing and it would be third place constantly! They got all that money from dominating in the software space before Xbox was a thing nothing to brag about just using daddy’s money as they say. Playing monopoly by buying studios will back fire on them tremendously.

      Maybe. They already have Coalition as masters of Unreal 4 and Turn 10/Playground as masters of the Forza engine which could be adapted for so many things.
      We'll see.

      @@raresmacovei8382 You can use all tech. So Unreal 5 has the really cool tech where it hides the details of textures not seen. Id tech is amazing at dynamic scaling. Both can worth in tandem. Include this support to Creation Engine 2 so you can have mod support and you can a beastly engine. Playground's issue is that they are technically not using a new engine and they need to update their engine to have RT support outside of Vista. Id tech can help w/ that since they are a master w/ RT with minimal hit in performance. Then we got 343, where honestly their new engine doesn't support RT (never declared) and still haven't shown footage of the game running on XSX when it's months before release after a year delay...I think they need the most help.

      Man, DF is falling off. The content they put between that time was garbage and other individuals that have a few hundred subs are starting to these comparisons Better. Idk what's going to happen to these people's channel. Even IGN is putting out 4k comp vids now. Bad news for DF I guess. Their comparison videos are the only reason I visit the channel. For the record, they have done some great work in the past, but again they're starting to get outclassed on the videos I care about by a Lot of other channels. Maybe it's just tedious for them, but they have a whole crew and this game has RAY TRACING.... you'd think they'd be All Over the comparison video day/minute ONE.

    Another great video. Series S user here, I finished the base game in both the One S back compat (the one with lower quality textures and visibly softer image) and the new upgraded version (which visually looks a lot better than the One S version, with better textures and a sharper image). And yes on a 1080p display (like the one I have) the softness is not as noticeable as mentioned in the video . The 120fps mode is a total blast and must be experienced to be believed. I really hope ID are rebooting Quake as rumored. Quake was one of the first games I ever played on a PC (in mighty 640x480) and I trust ID to knock it out of the park gameplay and performance wise !

      i wish Microsoft specially let other dev use this engine which are exclusive to pc and xbox like the medium instead of unreal engine which has lots of frame pacing issue, imagine if the medium was based on IDTECH 7 i doubt it would dips bellow 30 even mid range gpu like rtx 2060

      @@argenys because 4K panels are all that is currently made in TV space and most consoles are hooked up to a TV, not monitor. I still have 1080p TV and no intention of replacing it any time soon, but when time comes eventually, it is not as simple as walking in to a store and getting another 1080p one... So yeah, even though we all know what XSS is, how games look on 4K screens still matters to people. I honestly hoped that we'll see more of checkerboarding on the machine but it seems that it is just too much work to implement this in games and devs are happy with pared back resolution without any upscaler. XSS is potentially able to use the latest FidelityFX Super Resolution, maybe we'll see some of that at least in 1st party titles.

    What is most amazing in this game, that you will ignore almost all graphical features in real game, but watching it in slo mo, brings out all the wonderfull things that ID put in there.

    It DOESN'T take over 8 seconds to load on Xbox Series consoles, I've done it repeatedly and it's always around 5 seconds... Reference IGN's video with MVG breaking it down.

    I bought a Series S. Playing all non X|S optimized games off an external HDD. Still fast.
    Internal SSD is reserved for X|S optimized games. Very fast.

      I do the same on my Series X. I kept some One / One X games on the SSD but if I get more Series X optimized games I'll move them on the HDD.
      I feel like playing One / One X games on an external HDD on Series X is faster than playing on internal HDD on a One X.

      @@lord-fishv7355 Recommend getting an external HDD or SSD, then moving games back/forth between internal NVME SSD. External storage devices have a large capacity at a cheap price, and transfers speeds for these consoles are very quick. No need to delete any games and waste precious bandwidth (if you have data caps).

      Yeah, I think the thing with RT is that it makes far more difference to have it at all, than to have high quality rt over lower spec rt. Even having really low quality RT still looks way better than not having RT.

      I vote for high texture+1440P+60frames+100% view distance on console as standard, without any shit specials like shadow mapping+film grain+raytracing shit+motion blur what cuts on the horse power to the half.
      The consoles have weak APU, 2year and it will be a big horse shit for raytracing...

    120fps on this game is amazing, especially on the hard difficulties when the gameplay is so fast. I feel like I've been pulled out of a vortex when a combat encounter ends.

    Interesting, IGN's breakdown had the series x load times less then half a second more then PS5's not double. In my personal use it has also been super quick, def not 8 seconds as they experienced. I wonder if it's because I started up a new game and they are using an existing save file for their tests.

      @@emodadon1131 I dare say if Microsoft hadn't bought Bethesda, ID-Software would still have used VRS Tier 2. It's part of DirectX 12 which is also used on PC. So any developer who decides to use VRS 2 on PC will just enable it on Xbox as well.

      @@imt558delux The whole point of it is to reduce resolution in areas you don't notice. For example when you're playing Doom your eyes are glued to the area around the gun, the middle of the screen. Yeah if you stop playing and zoom in you may notice the lower resolution in some of the areas but when you're playing your peripheral vision doesn't notice it.
      It's definitely something that works really well with a shooter or racing game but not so much with a strategy game for example where the game is much more slower paced and you're looking allover the screen at different things. If it's programed on object where the player wont be looking depending on what's going on you won't know it's on unless you pause to zoom in to look for it. In my opinion anyway.

    14:32 this is 120hz's biggest weakness, if you use the ice bomb and flame belch you will see some very hard dips to framerates especially when you close in on the demons.

      120 down to 109 isn't really that big a dip but on the series x/s side there is support for VRR so it isn't even worth discussing if you are like me and have a VRR capable set. All these dips are just academic. playing at 120 on series x in that same section i didn't notice anything.

    Playing for the first time on Series X. And wow is this game amazing. Visuals are incredible. And I hope all games aim for 60fps. Visuals look so much better at 60fps. Even the supposed 30fps quality modes in other games look nowhere near as good in motion as games in 60fps. After all we don't play games in screenshots. We play the moving. And ID deserve huge praise. They are masters of technical achievments. It looks unreal in motion. RT mode is hiw I'm playing it.

      Was just playing through the Doom-Hunter boss fight on Series X, fucking phenomenal. I was playing the Raytracing mode and it did make my Xbox hot but hot damn, it's making this Nightmare run look beautiful. I think it's boosting my performance (in-game) lmao.

    So, I don't get it. With last gen and now current gen consoles, why do many games not have anisotropic filtering? It can't be a raw horsepower thing since from what I'm aware, it doesn't affect performance on PC that much.

      Its a memory throughput bottleneck on consoles. It has a severe impact on performance in that case, PC included.

      My understanding is that on pc it isn’t an issue due to the gpu having dedicated memory but on console the memory is shared by gpu and cpu so anisotropic filtering can use up a lot of bandwidth. I’m just repeating something I saw someone else post on a different video though so I might be wrong.

    Locked 60fps + RT is a fine mode for a single-player experience.
    120hz + reduced RT is a perk, but it's not dramatically upticking the player's input response in single-player to a point that's worth compromising.
    In multiplayer? Certainly 120hz mode on new gen console brings (best case) advantages to competitive MP, if net connection quality is a non-issue.

    I get that this is a very extreme circumstance, so I'm not complaining. But I found some *major* frame dips on PS5 when freezing a group of enemies, throwing grenades at them, and firing a gun like the Unmakyr. However, that was an actual gameplay attempt and not me actively hunting for dips.

    Id software easily has some of the best programmers and engineers in the industry. Astonishing work from a pure technical standpoint, and then on top of that - Doom Eternal is one of the best shooters in over a decade. You guys are on fire!
    Just can't decide whether I wanna replay it with ray-tracing on or at 120fps - literally spoilt for choice. Maybe I'll just play it twice on both modes - IT'S THAT GOOD!

    I recently went through it again on ps5 and honestly it looks pretty damn good. It runs close to perfect, there isn't really any slow down that the naked eye can notice. And on a quick note, the game actually can load faster than what they said here, usually if you reload a checkpoint it's literally like 2 seconds. Pretty cool stuff here

    the save issue was a problem, but i just replayed the campaign on ps5 which was fun to do all over. ray tracing is a added bonus, the game does looks way better with it on, seeing fire balls stream or your shots flow across the game floor is great to see, adds more

    There was also a recent COD Modern Warfare / Warzone patch for the PS5 that enabled 120 FPS. Not sure if you guys knew / want to cover that one. I’d love to see some technical analysis compared to PC as I have a high end gaming PC.

    You suspect most series S’s are hooked up to 1080p sets? I suspect you are right about that. Aside from people who just don’t have 4K, I’ve seen a lot of gamers who might not necessarily run out and buy new consoles, including retro purists, buy or consider the S to play older titles and Game Pass. It’s a great price with a great form factor and GP is a great service... they may never overtake Sony again, but I think it was a smart SKU.

      Well, they do have a MSRP $399 PS5 digital model with identical rendering specs to $499 model, so if you're calculating price vs. performance it gets very competitive between PS5 and Series X. Keep this in perspective.

      the playstation store is so expensive compared to the other stores and you can't change country to save your life...(money...)
      at least you could get another option (usually cheaper, even compared to competition)

      @@oror3751 Oh for sure, I'm all about disc version. UHD Blu-ray library here, and fan of physical game disc prices/flexibility. But, regardless of digital-only prices (which eventually go down/go on sale), there's a $399 option to buy a PS5 with identical game rendering capabilities.

    Been playing on my series x on a 65 lg oled with hdmi 2.1 and it's beautiful. I really like how quickly you can switch between modes, its impressive.

    Kinda weird that at no point a winner was declared by the commentators, despite the points they were making pointing one clearly out.
    On XSX side you get higher DRS averages, higher resolution in 120 FPS mode, slightly less aggressive dips in 120, and VRR support for those dips.
    It's also on Gamepass, and you won't have to start over.
    The conversation really shouldn't be, "even and great on all platforms."

    I wonder if any of Microsoft’s other teams will take advantage of them owning iD and will adopt the iD tech engine? Not the Coalition and Gears, as they’re migrating to UE5. But maybe some of the other teams?

      I'd be shocked if they didn't. From what I heard, ID tech was one of the reasons Microsoft bought Bethesda.

      @@taurussho86 hmm using blu tooth as your connection, the general controller design (the og dualshock has been the controller standard since it came out), motion controls (though thankfully they dropped kinect). That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's plenty more if you dig into it. Sony obviously copied a ton from Microsoft (using pc architecture, built in hard drive, online services, etc) as well it's what they do.

      @@mattj2692 the controller standard is Xbox design. It has been superior since 360. Even PS Pro controllers emulate Xbox's.
      Look at PS5 controller now. Aesthetics are very similar.
      Bluetooth is only used to connect to phones and PC. I feel very sorry if you think PS way of using Bluetooth to connect to the console is superior to Xbox Wireless protocol.
      Xbox wireless protocol has a bigger bandwidth and lower latency.
      I can on and on how PS has copied. From integrating internet, GUI, Achievement system, etc.

      @@AlphaDwg Directml or not they could probably attempted targeting rt at 120fps. The resolution would obviously be low though. And it may become cpu bound at points. Not sure how much of a performance impact rt has in this game cpu wise. But it's obvious that the consoles do have a fair bit of headroom with rasterization in this regard.

      @@helloguy8934 with direct ml they could render at 1080p and reconstruct the image to 4k and save on enough performance to still have RT at 120. This is if DirectML can match what DLSS 2.0 is doing. On PC you can get insane performance. With all the bells and whistles including RT at 120fps with even modest cards. AMD has FSR and its gear for what it is but it doesn’t match DLSS 2.0 because it’s not using machine learning to reconstruct the image. DirectML is the directX version of DLSS and it uses machine learning. Nvidia is also working with Microsoft on it. That’s why I’m curious to see what they do with this capability. If it’s anywhere close to what DLSS can do then is going to be huge for future games on Xbox. Especially exclusives

    How are we still at a point where console games will have anisotropic filtering disabled? It costs essentially zero performance these days and is a huge visual quality upgrade. I was already forcing it on in every game 20 years ago on hardware a tiny fraction of the performance level of these consoles.

    This right here is true game optimization. The braindead console fanboys don’t realize that just because a game runs better on one console, it doesn’t mean the console is weaker than the other. If the specs on both consoles are nearly identical, then it simply comes down to game optimization, and that’s down to the developer’s familiarity with the console, not the console itself.
    They did a great job with all versions of this game.

    I've been playing nothing but the 120fps mode on Series X, on an LGCX
    I tried going back down to the 60fps modes, but now after seeing 120, I could see a difference, and 60 surprisingly felt a little slow
