    IMO the raytracing type that really matters most is global illumination like what we see in Minecraft rtx or quake II rtx. But those are really difficult to implement in modern games due to high polygon counts. Once the tech gets there, people are really going to see what RT is capable of.

    • @Rorybabory
      @Rorybabory Před 3 lety +6

      Only reflections are raytraced, not the actual lighting. For that you need raytraced global illumination. Also, if most people can't tell the difference without knowing what to look for, it's not worth it FOR THAT GAME. If a game is made with raytracing in mind then raytracing will make the graphics better, however for games optimized for normal rendering methods then it's not really anything more then a novelty. Heck, in doom eternal's case, they literally made tons of objects more reflective just to make it look like raytracing is doing more then it actually is. The one thing I really hate is when people pretend to see a difference just because everyone else says it's better.

    The difference is very small and in a game like Eternal you won't really notice it yourself while playing or at least you'll stop caring about it very quickly.
    From the looks of it it's just raytraced reflections which are definitely an upgrade but I would've preferred something like raytraced shadows more since the game already excels at its metal surfaces while the shadowmap size is tiny for the sake of performance and most things in the game don't cast a shadow either because of this or because it's turned off for performance's sake again (like literally every enemy).
    Just imagine shooting with the BFG, plasma rifle, ballista etc and seeing the "passing car" type shadows in the environment, would've made a significantly bigger difference than raytraced reflections (though I have to admit it makes sense for them to pick reflections out of everything raytraced in the game since it is the main selling point of raytracing, demonstrates what it does clearly and the environments are basically built on metal and lights).

    Most action games should focus on providing high, stable frame rate. If the dev does not have much resources, just focus on smoothness, cut the rest. Reflections are a nice touch but mainly on slow exploration games, narrative based games. In other words Ray Tracing's impact on performance is too high for its value, at least on consoles. Hope we will get a more optimized reflections system on home consoles, or a better way to handle ray tracing

    There is no right or wrong way to playing Doom. Especially in regards to the visuals, what matters is that you're playing (saw someone say there is only one way to play Doom visually). For me I don't mind playing the game at 1800p with Ray Tracing on. Been playing on Series X with RT on and how my TV handles 4K up scaling and the game already being sharp, I really like that particular visual set up with HDR. And with VRR the small dips we see to 58-57fps I never notice. That said it's all preference. It is amazing what did software has done with the new consoles. Getting the game to play as smooth as it does with Ray Tracing and all the other visual enhancements or if you decide to play at 120fps, full 4K, their wizardry with technology is amazing.
