      Essentially, If he blew a tire it would be a couple hundred bucks and an hour wait MAX to get him back on the road. But because he blew an airbag it’s going to take HOURSSSS and also definitely well over 900$ and that’s being generous

      It costs more to replace an airbag yes, but a blown airbag won't kill another motorist when it blows at highway speeds and causes a rim to separate and fly into oncoming traffic.
      Admittedly that isn't the case this time, but it has happened and will undoubtedly happen again.
      A suspension airbag is the best outcome of the two.

    Today I called him and during our call he told me that on Monday so two days ago while going on the autobahn at 80kph (50mph) that he blew 6 tires at once front right back right and 4 others in the trailer the blown tire ompletly destroyed a airbag on the trailer
    Luckily he got away without big issues, didn’t lose control or anything and the traffic was light
    He told me that there was probably some debris that he didn’t see because even if a tire was old or all of them it would be highly unlikely that 6 go nearly at once

The entire reason I left the industry was because of those explosions. I looked up the data sheet and they can sit around 510psi. Definitely not just 100. Imagine the weight of the load and trailer sitting on a small air bellows at 100psi, no way would it give that much height or cushioning. 100 psi at those weights would provide no suspension travel or cushioning whatsoever.

    for those who dont know what the airbags are:
    Heavy trucks and trailers that can lift their wheels to preserve them when not needed, or drop them to meet weight load regulations, use inflatable airbags to lift and lower them. Some buses also use these to manage center of mass because buses are pretty tall so an imbalanced center of mass makes them easy to topple over when cornering. Also the hissing noises from bus and trucks are usually from their air powered brakes, not these suspensions.

    When one of the airbags go, take of the airline from the bag, put a kink in it and zip tie it shut, you won't loose air and you'll be able to get to where you need to go without being stuck road side. I was unloading at a customer when one of my airbags blew.I had put the lift platform on the dock and when I was pulling off the 2nd pallet (ot of 60) the right airbag on the 4th axle blew. Now the trailer was too low for the dock so I had to push the pallets up the slope the lift now created and onto the dock where the receiver now had to get them. When I finished unloading I crawled underneath trailer, lying on the wet ground in pissing rain, in november, at 9 in the evening, folding teh air hose and using a few zip ties so no air gets through. Luckily, it was my last delivery for the day so I walked across the street to the McDonald's. I ordered a frappé, and since they'd seen what had happened they gave it to me for free.

    I had an air bag from suspension blew up... you will run out of air if you stop... best you can is simply drive to the nearest service and have it replaced... and yes... you can drive it like that... worse case scenario is you might need to push the black button releasing the trailer brakes... since if you run out of air the trailer brakes will engage... and you dont want that during movement... so press the black button, drive carrefully and remember you only have the cab braking... so you need to brake even earlier and the braking power is a bit lower... but either then that, its a simple drive to the nearest service...

    Here’s a tip Trucker repair son to trucker When you hear hissing it means there’s still feed to the bag if the whole air bag popped it would be louder and the trailer would immediately drop due to the loss for the air buildup to raise it off the tires (When a trailer has no air the air builds up to raise it up to support for loads and fragile equipment as well as steady rides up hill) What you can do is actually use visegrips to clamp off the hole with some metal tape wrap it around the area and clamp it tight after shutting the truck off (This is a temporary solution to force the air into the bag to build up enough pressure to limp it off the freeway and to the nearest repair station) Roll slow and be more cautious in the future!

    Im a truck mekanik and i knew that it wasnt a tire because they have almost the same amount of damage power as a granate.
    When a tire blows up the damage can be sometimes fatal i have heard from other collegs that some brake calipers flew and they are tighted with six huge bolts.

    When I used to drive we put a locked box in the back of the truck we covered with a tarp and we put tools a long ass hose for air and some spare airbags fittings some spare fuses, and other goodies. Just in case something like this would happen we don’t have to wait for road service but do it ourselves.
    I recommend get some spare bags they are not that big and get 2 so they don’t scam you with shitty ones or used.

    • @ashtonvalentine7496
      @ashtonvalentine7496 Před měsícem

      You do not haul fucking airbags around 24/7dude they most definitely are big and do not go enough to justify that very rare a airbag blows keep a couple air fittings some hose and fuses not the whole parts room

    • @echo3996
      @echo3996 Před měsícem

      @@ashtonvalentine7496 Ok let me clarify a bit. The space on the back of the would a little bigger than the space people in the US use for their tool boxes on the back of a pickup truck, the reason we used it is because we haul equipment from very far away from services like roadside assistance. The roads I used to drive where not really well kept since the government where I'm from does not give a dam about it so a lot bumps where deep enough that the load on the trailer would blow them after a bit of use and the company didn't wanna replace it before failure so we decided to leave it on the truck in case we had to do it ourselves.
      In case you are wondering we would move equipment for oil refineries in Venezuela. Some drives would be all the way from a port city to anywhere like the ass end of nowhere. Some times we would go with a whole crew and sometimes we would go with just a driver and a helper just so we would have a guy looking at a map so we don't get lost.

    Dont worry guys, a blown tire or airbag is nothing special. I work in a little truckworkshop at a trucking company and we have that all the time. Old / damaged tires get collected every other week and by that time we almost always have a pile of around 30 worn down/damaged tires. We also have around 5-10 airbags of each kind stored, they are not that frequent but they still blow up sometimes, maybe once a week or so. And all that from around 50 trucks so yeah, not that bad. I also gotta say that we work in construction so tires get way more affected than in other enviorments but still, shit happens.

    Being a truckie comes at rusk my whole family are truckers and my dad and my grandam were on a trip and witnessed an accident. They had a trailer catch on fire. My grandma passed out behind the wheel and my dad didnt know how to drive a road train at the time. My dads girlfriend got sentenced 3 years for death by driving at night she accidentally hit a bike rider and killed him so shes coming home in 5 months. But its hectic a truck driver takes bravery and comes with massive risks
    Idc if I dont get life and I'm not saying a little story I'm just saying it's dangerous if U don't know what ur doing
