Facts
Aquaclear is one of the best filters just keep it clean
I've put 2 aquaclear 70 hob on my 75 and later on my 90 gallon (when I upgraded) I just had to cut a few slits from the lower lip of the tank plastic rim, the aquaclear 70 doesn't need much tank modifications to fit.
I have almost all Marineland filters. I also have an Aquaclear 30, same problem, it's still in the box, waiting until the end of this week when I "move" an aquarium so I'll have room for it. But I'm sure it will do fine and I like the flexibility it'll give me with filter materials. Thanks for sharing despite the frustration. Hope ur trip is great.
Cool!
Been using these filters since early eighties. Had the aquaclear 300 on my 90 gallon in high school. Then the 110. Still use the 300. Really hated when they changed model numbers. Numbers used to match gph. You save money on media as well.
I fill my aquaclear's completely with bio-sponge material. EXCELLENT filter design!
i have this filter on my 30 Gallon, it is an awesome filter.. super powerful, the only hang on the back filter i have used so far that i like, although i have Marineland filters that work wonders in canister form, i have yet to try one in hang on the tank form, sorry to hear about your filter issues.. that is the worst thing that could happen to a tank. I love Marineland and Fluval :) both are excellent to me.
I cut the mesh in half and made it 2 pouches of bio media, then sometimes I rinse one off and try not to disturb the other too much so I rinse it next time... also the carton your filter came in looked like 1980's design
I switched away from HOB because they were splashing the wall behind which over time caused mineral accretions. Nice that you have paneling maybe I should put plastic sheeting to protect my drywall. I like the banter with the two of you. Makes for an entertaining and informative channel!
Thank you! That might work
They are great hob filters.
Entertaining. Thanks for posting. I just bought a Fluval Bow 45 tank. Looking forward to setting up. Maybe I'll need to make a video....who knows....
I love this filters, the really do the job.
Great video guys! and great timing for me, looking for a filter for a new 55G we just bought and was leaning toward this one... Going to make sure I have clearance before purchasing though thanks for that heads up.
It’ll make for a much more enjoyable experience!😀
I ran into the same problem! Great video Jason.
Hang on Back could easily be transformed to hang on Side.
It’s been tested and tried.
Besides, drill a row of small holes, well, actually perforate the lower intake with holes, approximately 3 mm, and cover it with a coarse filter sponge. No fry gets sucked in and the filter will run for longer before requiring cleaning.
I have this one on my 33L. I use it one the skinny end to provide circulation and mechanical to my dual sponge filters. Probably overkill, but I like to keep my grow out tanks over-filtered because of power-feeding.
Cool!
I run 2 AC110's on my 60 gallon. I think they are the next best thing to canisters! I run the coarse sponge that comes with them on the bottom....some fine polyester on the next layer, and then the bio media on top. Seems to keep the tank full of cichlids once and clear. Plus they are easy to clean in my opinion.
Awesome! Glad they are working well for you.
Tried one, I had issues on the side and front with those, took it back and got another Marineland filter, cheap looking plastic too. Prefer the flexible black plastic of Marineland's.
Entertaining unboxing and review!
Wow, nice that you got the issue sorted out before you left town. Could have been much worse had it gone out right after you left home.
My favorite pump on the market 😉
Aquaclear makes the best hang on the back filters then I would say tidal comes after both excellent filters
I have had to cut sooooo many aquarium rims because filter companies can't seem to just make the hanger a little bit too big and just add an adjustment knob. Instead we buy a filter thats perfect for the tank and then realize it wont work because the hanger is too small. Damn azoo palm filters are set up perfect for whatever tank you want and have the adjustment knob if only they made some bigger filters
Totally agree on the depth of the filter and get a 110 to fit a larger tank
I've acquired a BUNCH of aquaclear filters and powerheads.. Scored a load at a garage sale
That’s like every fish keepers dream is finding cool fish stuff at a garage sale!
Aquaclear filters are hands down the best. Who cares if they are wide. Jesus. They’re simply the best. Period. Been running them for over a decade. Never had one break down.
You two are perfect together......cracks me up listening to you guys.....love the video.....
Thank you!
The biggest issue with me on the Aquaclears, besides the back clearance, is the inability of it to self prime. I travel a lot and need to know it will be able to restart. In my past experience if I had a momentary loss of power, the AC was unable to prime and start back up. So, I'm leaning towards a seachem tidal.
The Tidal and the new Penguin Pro series are both self priming and have been good filters.
Hahaha here comes the "problem solver". & "Sorry didn't mean to knock you over". 😂😂😂 Great video! .... I also had problems with hang on the back filters due to wide tank rims, highly annoying! I understand that.
It happen to me too but I didn't buy the aqua clear it was a replacement of a Marineland that stop working after a year and a half ...
Funnest unboxing I've ever seen, great video...
Thank you!
Another awesome video!!!
Thank you!
Great video what type of plants are you keeping in your mbuna tank that they don't destroy?
They destroy everything for the most part. Sometimes I can keep a little floating hornwort with them, but they have eaten everything else I've tried.
I did the same thing before, and now I have a hang on the front 😂
Everything always happens when you got to go away...I have a marineland and sponge filters in my 30 gallon tank.
Another great video mate you both are hilarious together as usual
Thanks!
She’s great! Lol
Love your videos. 👍
Thank you!
I want one!!!
I would use the filt%be a cleanup filter
I removed 2 tidal 110s from my tank and returned back to , two aquaclear 110s. Tank is cleaner and I capture much more debris again. Plus they start on their own due to a simple thing called maintenance,
I wish that was the case for me - we maintained that thing every week - still had issues. Glad they are working for you though.
So gald I use Tidal filters from Seachem after seeing this.
You two are a hoot...you should watch pond guru, he shows how to pack the filter optimally....also be careful with your sand, it'll ruin the impeller. Good luck!!
Hahaha I loved this video "Iike so"
On this filter I only use polyester filter fiber I save tons of money I get a big bag for 10 bucks or use reusable sponge that is cuttable
Does anybody know if Fluval/Hagen is discontinuing the C series HOB filters? They're almost giving them away on Chewy.com. I bought the C3 a year ago and wish I'd gotten the Aquaclear.
Hello. Query. The suction tube, at what height is it convenient to put it? Closest to the bottom? or in the middle of the aquarium? Thank you
I usually put it towards the bottom.
Awesome video! U2well 2gether. Wondered what extra tip was for.
Thank you!
Is it a good idea to put a sponge onto the intake filter of HOB filters? Do you have any videos that talk about any benefits behind that?
It's a very good idea. Keeps fry and shrimp out of the HOB, increases both mechanical and biological filtration, is easily rinsed and re-used, and keeps your filter media lasting longer!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics That answer was gold! Thank you so much!!!
Aquaclears are the best HOBs on the market, but, yeah, they do take up more room
Is an Aqua Clear 70 filter too much for a 30 gallon regular aquarium? Stocking is community fish and live plants. Or should I go with an Aqua Clear 50?
I will be using an intake sponge because I will be getting sand substrate. Thanks
I would do the Aquaclear 30 or 50. That should be plenty.
Hey man what were those two cichlids that swam in near the end of the video? looked awesome
Those are Metriaclima greshaki albinos - they're really cool!
This HOB looks pretty decent, I must say. I'm a big fan of HOBs - I've got little Chinese ones (dirt cheap) and they just work :) Plus the maintenance literally can't be simplier than in a HOB.
Ya, maintenance is certainly an advantage when it comes to HOB!
Nice review
Thank you
I see that you didn’t put in the carbon in but what you do for ammonia contral
We rely on microbes in a cycled tank to handle the ammonia. We always transfer media from an existing tank or use Fritzyme 7, which adds nitrifying bacteria too. I haven't used carbon in many years!
I thought you were going to say that the bio-media bag was a beard net!
I've been using Aquaclear's for over 25 years - I love them! I prefer to double sponge them rather than use the biomedia; and then clean alternate sponges during maintenance.
You guys are hilarious! The instruction scene is probably played out ten million times everyday in the USA - just like that!
And lastly, did you use the spacer that was lying on top of the tank at the end of the video - that little black plastic piece?
That would be some kids of beard net. Haha. We didn't use the spacer because the filter barely fit where I ended up placing it and it was level.
Set up my first planted tank about a month ago. My plants are having trouble thriving. I am running my filter with a charcoal bag and noticed you said it removes nutrients the plants need. Could this help my plants if I take it out? What would that do to my water quality if I did remove it? So sponge bio and floss is fine to run just those 3 medias?
Hey Ryan,
Yes! I would get rid of the carbon. It shouldn't really matter if your tank is balanced!
Prime Time Aquatics got rid of it today when I did the water change also have roof tabs on the way 🤞 thanks for the quick reply
Question: Shouldn’t the bio balls be at the bottom as the water flows upward? I have a canister filter, my mom has a mega-Fluval for the turtle, but I really confused now as to which media goes where. By the way, do you know a better filtration system for a poop-machine aquatic turtle? We’ve tried just about everything over the years.
Great question. I prefer the bioballs to be on top for a couple of reasons. 1) I don't want them covered in detritus, since their primary job is to hold bacteria, and detritus bound to the surface reduces that. 2) the other media does not sit flush in the rack. On the Aquaclears the water travels from the bottom up. I haven't kept aquatic turtles in a long time. The better the water through put you have the better the filter will pick up waste.
Prime Time Aquatics Thanks for the advice, didn’t know that tidbit about the bio balls. The turtle’s filter is similar to the Fluval you’re opening with that sort of saddle for the media that slides into the filter. I’m considering a canister filter for better efficiency, this 35 year old turtle is as regular than most residents at a nursing home :)
I put this on my 55 gallon tank and noticed my 1/2" - 1" Malawi cichlids were struggling to swim, so I turned it to low
My original, (pre Fluval) HOBs have been running for over a decade. Best filters of their type on the market. I can't speak to the Fluval products, though.
I wonder if that has something to do with it. The older ones seem to have a better rep.
I have bor an Aquclear 70 and a Seachem Tidal 55. The Tidal series is so much better. For one thing, you would not have the media falling out while trying to put it in.
Ya, I’m a little challenged some times! Haha
Fluvial is the best filter. Marinelands are terrible had a few of them break after just a couple months
Could you not have hung it on the side of the tank?
I thought about that, but I have glass lids on the 75. Plus, I didn’t want to have to look at it all the time.😀
Also, usually if you have a light canopy top, there is a cut out for where the filter will hang. That's why they are often called "hang on back" of HOB filters.
We're are you guys located? I live in Wisconsin about 2 hours from the Dells
We are in the Chicagoland area.
Hi
do you think the Aqua Clear 70 will fit my
Aqueon LED 29 Gallon Aquarium Kit, 32.25" L X 14.25" W X 20.63" H?
Thanks
Sure - it might be a little strong at full flow though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks
Does the sponge "have" to go on the bottom? I have mine with the bio on the bottom and sponge on top so my bio never leaves the water. Do you think that's okay?
Good question! The reason for doing the sponge on the bottom is it will trap a lot of the detritus before it hits your bio-rings so they don't get as dirty. It's not harming anything by doing it the other way, but the bio-rings may have to be rinsed more often.
I also figured bacteria need food. How are they getting it if nothing passes the foam to the bio rings? Wouldn't the bacteria die?
Just want to add my own experience. I am a discus and pleco collector residing in Mumbai, India. 2 years ago, I started keeping aquariums. So far I own 28 canister filters and also had 6 HOBfilters (3 x aq70s and 3xfluval c3's). All hob filters died from burn out after a power cut at which point they left water and were unable to suck it back up. All 28 canisters run fine from over past 2 years and locally i get canisters for just twice the price of HOBs thanks to china next door. So i certainly would not recommend any HOB as my experience with them is nothing short of terrible.
Anyway to reduce the splashing sound?
The easiest ways I know are - increase the water level inside the tank. If that's not possible you could turn down the flow. The other thing that can be done, but it takes more work, is use aquarium safe silicone can silicone a piece of plastic to the return so the water flows closer to the surface instead of down. Hope this helps.
Thank you.
Ps the 70 needs more clearance than the 110 due to the tank rim on marineland tank design.. the 110 straddles the rim with room to spare
you № 1.🙂
Thank you!
What will happen if the filter is running but not underwater for a long time? I've kept it running in my home and due to lock down im stuck in another state and I'm pretty sure the water would've evaporated by now... Will it cause fire if it keeps on running dry? Also i have a heater running dry too... Pls help someone...
I would try to get that thing turned off ASAP (or top off the tank). Yes, they can sometimes get hot - it can burn itself out over time. Usually as long as the intake is still in the water, and the intake tube has a good seal, they don't stop moving water until the water is close to the intake. I would still try to have someone get in there and top off the tank if possible. I have found that the aquaclears in general do a good job of pulling water through the intake when the water levels fall.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for the reply, actually the real issue is with the old glass heater, many says that it'll burst and get flames so i don't wanna take chances...i told my neighbour to turn the power down for the house... The corona killed my fishes...
What if u put the filter on the side of the tank ??
You could certinaly do that!
Is the 70 too much for a 30 gallon? The 20/50 just seemed very weak.. thanks!!
Ya, I would probably step it down one just because the water flow will be a lot for the 30 gallon.
Always keep an extra motor and impeller available. Aquaclears are great. Even keep a backup HOB available. Aquaclears run forever. Have some running well over 20 years.
I just bought one a few hours ago and mine is dripping a bit out the overflow im kinda pissed ..anyway thats how i came across your vid. Do u know wat the problem could be?
I actually had mine over flow onto the floor as well. I wound up going back to the Marineland penguin 350, which has worked better for us. Maybe check the actual pump? It can be removed from the bottom and if it's not tightened all the way it can leak as well.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for responding. But i mean were the intake tube goes in ther two groves one on each side for over flow if filters clogged and mines new and doing that
That may depend on the way the filter tray is packed. I usually do sponge on the bottom, filter floss, then the biomedia bag on top.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thats how i did it but i used a white polishing pad not floss its a white tough pad maybe its the problem
You talking holidays? Enjoy them!
Do you have any Male Bristlenose Plecos for sale?
I'm having the darndest time finding any. Wanting to breed my Albino Long fin Bristlenose female. Thanks.
I have a lot of them, but only sell through local clubs and auctions right now.
ok, Thank you anyways. I'll keep looking.
oh man your beard, it's awesome any tips?
Just keep positive beard thoughts and it will grow. Haha
Prime Time Aquatics haha Thanks Man 😆
Strange we can’t get these in the UK, Fluval only do external and internal filters here, which is a pity as these HOB filters look good, and while I like fluval external filters, I seriously dislike their internal filters.
Maybe some day😀
So you don't use carbon media?
I haven't used carbon in maybe 10 -12 years? Even then, it was very limited. Never really saw a need for it.
Carbon is not necessary. Double up on ceramic media, and save the carbon in case you need to remove medicine from the water at some time in the future.
In one of my setups, I had to hang them on the side for the same reason. So they become hang on the side filters. Lol
Haha : -)
Prime Time Aquatics Thanks for sharing your experience Jason! Great video.
Best HOB filter in my opinion, but agree on width not working for some tanks. They are my go to HOB filter and its nice to have a stock of them because I almost always have spare parts. I use them as back up filtration on all my larger tanks (freshwater) that have sumps. I use only the sponge as media and I “plant” it with Philodendron and then top it with loose Matrix. The roots grow into the sponge and it rarely needs to be cleaned. Doing this does require light for the plants but a couple of mine are near a window or I use a small clip on grow light. I have one of these that is so well established I haven’t removed it for 18 mos and the impeller/motor has never stopped. Plus I don’t need to use the lids.
Very cool set-up!
Im from Wisconsin. Do u live in Wisconsin?
We’re actually in the Chicagoland area.
What's the easiest way to catch a bunch of baby plecos?
Depends on how small, but I usually use the largest net I can (that doesn't get caught up in the aquascape) and some patience. : -)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks, I'm actually gonna try to use a bottle like a "snail trap" it's an oddly tall tank , and I dont feel like pulling all the decorations.
Very entertaining vid I have seen a magicians very attractive assistant but not a fish keepers very attractive assistant maybe next time she could pop out of a aquarium dressed as a mermaid and assist you in an other project.....great vid thanks
Don't give her any ideas. Haha
Filter floss always before bio media. Better off putting 2 sponges in it instead of the filter floss
Jeff Griffin was curious as to why the floss would go before?
Aqua 110 is best
I tried the 70 but it doesnt fit a aqueon 75 gallon or bigger, the edge or rim of the tank is wider and the fluval 70 wont fit (unless I cut away the plastic rim of the tank, evne then it still doesnt fit correctly). I have two fluval 110's on my 75, fish seem happy for years, no water issues, I just clean the filter with tank water once a month
BEST EVER HOB WAS THE OLD supreme king fish tank filter , POWERFUL FLOW OF 600 GPH ~~ NOW THEY SELLING THESE JUNKS ,I STILL HAVE MY SUPREME KING OVER 30 YEARS OYEA AND THE MOTOR PUMP WAS METAL!!
You never explained why you put a 70 gallon filter on 75 gallon tank. I guess you got interrupted. 110 aquaclear wont fit?
Ya, not enough space. Plus, I already have sponge filters in the tank.
Love having Johanna as your "assistant!"
Me too! : -)
God, you two are sooo cute...get a room !
Xx aunt pat
Technically we were in a room- a fish room!
The Aquaclear 50 only need about 3 inches of clearance, the 70 needs about 4 inches. So if the 70 was close to fitting you might want to try the 50. Also I don't like using the filter lids. It is not that they rattle, but they seem to create an airflow noise that is not present when they are not used. Instead I use a thin little rectangle of plexiglass.
Nice info!
That’s the info I was looking for, the width of them. Wanted to upgrade my AC 50. Looks like I’ll have the same problem. Grrr
Nice video👍 do you have any aquarium plants you can send Me? Thanks
Thank you! I'm not shipping anything right now. Just selling through local clubs.
Hello Serbia Belgrade
is that "better" or "baiter" different? ha ha
Please. . PLEASE include JoAnna in ALL your videos, she makes them more entertaining, and like us doesn't always take you serious ;o)
Haha - I'll remember that. I hope she doesn't see this comment. :-)
Hi
First!
Be nice to her man. You have no idea what you are doing. She is trying to help. Listen to her man 😇
The filter isnt meant to be put on a 120
It wound up on the 40 gallon breeder.
Prime Time Aquatics i should have said its not meant to be put on a 120 and thats why it doesn’t fit
" we don't need this " messes something up
