Cool lesson - love this tune ! Your idea about the trilogy containing WR, Loser, and Deal is interesting - I never thought about that... I always kind of associated this with songs like Stella Blue and Black Peter - not from story standpoint but just an overall "vibe". Any of the hard luck type songs also make me think of Mission in the Rain, even though some of the music for that song at least sounds a bit more upbeat... but lyrics like "tonight I'd be thankful, Lord, for any dreams at all..." seem like they'd fit perfectly in Wharf Rat too...
I agree. I always group WR, SB, and BP as well. I think of Wharf Rat as the story of two people who have lost everything. Both the storyteller (August West) and the one hearing it. The one hearing it is hearing a tale similar to his own (he’s got time but no dime) and NEEDS to believe August West’s girl (Pearly) is true to him because he needs to believe HIS girl (Bonnie Lee) is true to him. They are the same.
Conversely, I’ve always thought of Mission as a song about someone who achieved his dreams, but is left with that “is that all there is?” feeling. I’ve heard Jerry say the song is autobiographical and it being a decade after the formation of the Dead and during the hiatus, I think this makes sense.

Not making this up: there is a local chimney service and repair company in my area called August West. Every time I see one of their vans, I cannot help but sing out the “My name is…” line, and every time I drive by their store, I look to see if the space next to them is available. Why? Hey I got some new strings and brought my guitars in from the barn the other day... been looking for something to play...
I went to a bunch of shows mid 90's but I was a loiile late to the scene... I remember people in the lobbies comparing song lists, and my buddies had all the duck's picks and knew all the lore, but I was more tripping out on individual lines than the whole songs on that level so I never really linked the songs... but at the same time there were definitely songs that always bled into one another like it was one big song so this must be one of those.
I wanna give you extra like for the bridge intro. 👍

I saw a lot of Dead shows in the 80s, and whenever Jerry sang the line about doing time for some other f*Coker’s crime, the crowd would go wild. They always loved it when Jerry cursed.🌟
