- "Wharf Rat appeared steadily in the repertoire since its debut in February 1971 until 1995, and was always a very welcome song to appear in the 'ballad slot' in many second sets. It first appeared commercially on Skull & Roses, and is one of the few Grateful Dead originals for which there is no recorded studio version, with the Skull & Roses rendition being the definitive version." - David Lemieux

Will you come with me? Won't you come with me? There's no better place to take a long strange trip with the Grateful Dead than right here. We've got music from every single studio album and a bevy of live albums, to boot. There are celebrated live performances from the 70s and 80s and official videos with more skeletons than you can shake your bones at, an exclusive seaside series on what's to come from the band's rich catalog and details on meet-ups all across the promised land. If it's community you’re after, try your hand at our yearly DEAD COVERS PROJECT competition and connect with fellow Dead Heads around the world. Heck, keep your eyes peeled you might even catch a glimpse of Pigpen on keys, Jerry in a GROOVE, Bobby tellin' tales, Mickey talkin' space, Phil and friends, Bill on the beach, or anyone from our extended family.
It's all happenin' right here. Subscribe and you won't miss a thing.

Makes me feel old and in the way. Miss you honey.
Boy it was good while it lasted. Every time they sang “this may be the last time” or “ black muddy river” we all looked each other with that look of recognition.
Sober Wharf Rat since 12/27/2014 🙌🏼
Keep up the good work brother man!!
Getting closer myself.. Great work Brother..
Living not dying
2/14/11 and counting. Would give it all away to have Jerry back.
Since 6/25/94
Seeing July of 90 stuff makes me so sad knowing these are Brent's final days. He brought something to the band that i dont think could truly be put into words.
What I want to know is whether there is any footage of Deer Creek 1990.
That was so BEAUTIFUL, thank you for making me cry!!!(~);}❤️💀🐊⚡🐢🌹🎶✌️
Caught his final two nights in Chicago just days after this. He pushed as hard as he could right to the end.
😅
Yeah couldn’t agree more.
Miss that Gentleman every Single Day !!!! We should be Grateful for ALL the Music he left for us n future Generations , the Music Stands the test of Time ..., Soo maybe 1000 yrs from now they will still be Dancin n Spreading the Love !!!! ✌️💖🎶🍀🌈🌹⚡😇
@David Boniface Keep the Faith 😇

Yeah: It will be like the DISCovery of the NEW DEAD Sea scrolls...and unlike the originals...these will be found all over the Earth...and beyond (Mars Hotel)...WEIR everywhere...

Thank you so much for sharing! 😀
Skull & Roses and Europe 72 were two albums that put me on the bus back as a high schooler in '73 & '74. Still riding....
It was a magical night and tour
Every Grateful Dead Concert is magical, an unbelievably beautiful merging of spirits, music, color, energy! Their music brings out the best in people.
And it never gets old...DeadHead4Life
YEP ME TOO.
Could listen to dead and jgb every day
And The Music Never Stopped
Such an underrated song. I used to listen to this growing up because my dad almost always had it on, Jerry’s frail tenor never ceases to wow me. Miss you Jerry ❤️💙⚡️
Always a great day to hear a story.. RIP Poppa
This is possibly the coolest song ever
Hunter's words man. It's Hunter's words.
Yah, but it was Jerry telling us...
Always and forever. Jerry, Pigpen, Robert, John Perry, Keith, Bear, Brent, Vince...
I'll get up and fella faceplant down stares, playedoutphisush
Good start to the morning❤
Gotta Love the Audience Cheer for Jerry's rare profanity..
As rare as when they played this song, which was a lot. In daily life he cursed like a sailor.
Jerry sounded so great in 90..
Brents Death fucked him up *Possibly sober at this time? maybe just off the china white and the other white.
Fu$:ing GREAT ☮️❤️🎶🎼
If all of time and space is happening simultaneously as one ever expanding moment…am I still tripping my face off at a show in 1990 and hallucinating 2021??
these last few years have made me wonder if i’m overdosing on the floor of some rave in the 90s in some kind of jacob’s ladder thing as i’ve obviously run out of ideas for the timeline to get this foolish...

One of my favorite songs! God I love the Grateful Dead! I’d be Dead without them!
I needed this...
Spinning on the patio... Almost fell in the pool. #NFA ❤️⚡️💙
Stop being nostalgic and joy it, repeatedly, repeatedly. How could you not get tired of it
Niiiice... Better times... God I miss Jerry and Brent... I had so much fun following the Dead... 79 thru 90s..pretty stoned, but still jamming at 62.. Omg I thought I was on a 4 day weekend.. Reverend Jim lol 😂
That was nice way to begin my day!
One of my first Dead concerts. Great day and night!
Meaningful, powerful, beautiful, thanks for posting.Still working on it for 46 yrs.almost there.see you boys on the other side when I get up and fly away!
Love how they vary the intros to this song. The Louisville version on this tour is incredible.
LOVE that version in Louisville
Happy 4th of July. Peace and Love Blessings To All
Amazing song, great performance. ⚡💀⚡
Can't wait to see Dead & Company August 18th in Barstow VA
Hershey PA august for me. Still prefer Phil and friends when warren shows up. Closest thing there is, imo.
Sweet... Where has time gone? This was a fun show to be at. Chasing balloons, eating veggie burritos, playing hacky sack, meeting all types of people and feeling free.
Everything except eating veggie burritos, chasing balloons, and playing hacky sack, but I did meet all types of people and I was free. Yea, where has the time gone, and where is it going now, man? It goes so fast now. It scares me.
I'd give anything to go back. Anything.
Hunter's ode to the Twelve Step Program
Gees I love the Dead.
The year I started with them and managed 15 shows of heaven
One of their best!
Hunters inauguration into her Hall of Fame was awesome

Some day.
Me too
Mom is Dancing with you now.
Good day, good people (~);-}
Whether he wanted it or not, he must have known he was the focal point not only of the band but also a huge international following of absolutely faithful fans. He trashed the whole thing.
Garcia just wanted to play good music, your perception is that he trashed the whole thing, I feel lucky to have seen him perform for 9 years, get over your self indulgent shitheadedness.
@@davidjacuk4286 Definitely NOT a Deadhead, lol!
If around at the time, probably wouldn't even know about The Dead, or Dead Tour, Spring, Summer, and Fall, East Coast shows(starting and ending on The West Coast).
Unless they showed up in your city/town, or maybe friends told you about. Very little in the public eye! A "Rolling Stone" Mag story every 3-4 years..
The biggest, coolest thing around, and most didn't know of em'!
If Jerry F'd up the whole song, then I don't think anyone could play it "right", lol!👍🎶💜🙏😘💨💨💨
Jerry didn't want to be the focus of anything but bringing life to his music. He was against commercialization and the establishment. Wasn't afraid to say it either. Definitely your loss. It sounds like you needed a little dead in your life.
Alcohol free since February 7th 1984 .
I know that the life Im living's no good. But, don't worry I'll get a new start.
And live the life I should...

I just can't connect with this music.
You need help. 😝
You had to be there. I understand how you feel. It was the experience from the time you showed up till you pulled out, in route to the next, that made it what it was. Don't give up. Alter your mind and let it flow. It's music that relates to everyone, givin the proper introduction.
Take the one verse for Instance. Half of my life,I spend doing time, for some other fuckers crime. Fill in your own blanks. Anything in your life be diff, better or worse, based on something, someone else did? This isn't the song you want to accommodate yourself with the dead on. This is a song for weathered heads.
